- Unboxing the OnePlus 12R with a quick review of the camera tech, gaming and Oxygen OS 14 experience, comparing it vs the regular 12. The OnePlus 12R is a more budget-friendly alternative flagship smartphone. You're sacrificing some performance and camera smarts to hit that UK price, and there are plenty of other differences too.
Still, the OnePlus 12R should satisfy all but the most demanding of users. While each of the camera sensors has been downgraded, you can shoot good looking pictures with this phone at any time. The ultra-wide and telephoto smarts of the 12 are a big step up, however.
Likewise, this global version of the OnePlus 12R can smash through games like Genshin Impact, on higher graphics. That frame rate occasionally stumbles, but the 8 Gen 2 is still capable, if not as beefy as the 12 8 Gen 3.
I will be testing the OnePlus 12R as my full-time phone soon for an in-depth review but so far the Oxygen OS 14 features look identical. Plus the battery life is still among the best of any smartphones I've tested up to 2024. That battery is actually slightly bigger in the 12R vs 12, with the same fast charge support. No wireless action however.
So that's my unboxing and early review of the OnePlus 12R, a more affordable alternative to the 12. Let us know your thoughts on this global edition below!

Oneplus 12 is 4 years of OS updates and 5 years of support, while the 12R is 3 years of OS updates and 4 years of support.
Oneplus 11 is a much better buy then the 12R.

I would just get a Pixel for this price, and for the weird camera choices… the battery is nice but the 8 Pro has a decent enough battery for multiple days off the charger. 🔌

This phone comes with pre installed screen protector and charger in the box but overpriced Samsung, Sony, and Apple phones don't. Ripping us off
I traded my 5-year-old One plus 6T which literally had no issues till now, everything was flawless and they gave me $210(60$ device + 150$ bonus) discount on the trade which is unbelievable. Without a second thought, I bought 12R.
Update: I received the phone today 1/12/24 and I can tell you this is best phone, It just takes 20 min around and 100% charged , screen is so good. Heptic touch is awesome, so many new features. Best budget phone with premium quality.
Update 2: After using 4 days one thing observed since phone aspect ratio is different due to very long display, RUclips and other videos does not go in full wide screen mode in portrait. Which is kinda annoying a bit

One thing you have not mentioned is that the 12 comes with the Pixelworks X7 visual processor which adds additional features (especially for gaming) which the 12R does not have.
For a moment I thought Mitchell Starc and Ashton Agar (from the Australian cricket team) had a baby and he started reviewing phones xD
Well, I have the 12, 16RAM, 512 Storage.
Happy as a puppy with it.
Reasons:
Battery life is tops.
Regular 1x photo is very good.
Zoom is glorious... even in low light.
Video... I do too little of that, so I can't give you a learned opinion. Seems good, but I'm not the one to ask.
Software: I have this brand since the One. Any questions? REALLY? Isn't that a convincing sign of trust?...
Assistance: Superb! They won't let you down. Either through chat, shipping back to them for maintenance and getting it back quickly 👍
Hardware: Despite intensive use, I never broke one. Still have them, fully functional, for proof.
Photography was meh... Until th7 Pro, that started bad, then had a little progress with 9 Pro... And finally evolved to a very good experience with the 11 and seems to have it it with the 12.
As for the speed, screen and storage, you'll love all that, stay cool.
Wish they came out with a crimson colored version like they're boxes already

You need to be aware that the CarePlus insurance does not cover the 16GB/512 GB OnePlus 12. It does not mention this until the very end of the checkout process. This applies to the US at the least.

Do they explain why? That's so peculiar. I could see that maybe they couldn't promise to replace it if they didn't have enough in stock I guess... That's pretty weak but it happened to the surface duo 2. But that was a complete s*** show and totally embarrassing. But you would think it would still cover repairs and the like
Does the curved screen feel the same on both phones? I've felt both phones at a local store in my area but they were in display and I couldn't hold them to tell a difference.

I been using it for 2 days do like it alot I got the 128gb version but been a good phone so far been since the OnePlus 7 5g McLean since I had OnePlus phone so I'm very pleased
Paid $301 for the 12R preorder with a case. They gave me $220 for a Galaxy A23 I never used once. Pretty good trade in values from them. For a backup to my S23 Ultra this should do just fine.

Even if you only keep your phone for 3 or 4 years, I think the point is that the phone won't be in a landfill after that. You could sell it or give it away or use it as a backup device or some kind of music player or something.

My OnePlus is restarting itself at least twice per day. I guess after finishing the payments, it starts to die and forces me to shop for a new phone. 😅

The unintentional touches prevalent with curved screens is annoying as hell! Am replacing my 3 month old curved display phone now because of that issue. Hard to find fully protective cases for them too? I'd own the 12 now if it wasn't for that display...

I love oneplus right now even there display with colors man. It even has dolby vision! Yes imo the display looks better then the samsung now with colors due to samsung reducing color and the new anti glare stupid coating lol

Over here using a 7 Pro and aside from some GPU performance on the high end and MAYBE 5G (not that much faster than LTE where I'm at) I'm having a hard time wanting to upgrade. The battery is still good, 256GB of storage is still plenty, the cameras do alright with a Leica GCam build, the screen is great - 90hz is just fine and don't forget it's got a pup-up 16MP front facing. So you get a near bezel-less display that's nice and bright with no hole punch. Everything else is near on par with new phones... (IDC about wireless charging and 30W is good on your battery)
Phones haven't done a whole lot in the past 5/6 years. Just small things here and there.

Also have the 7 Pro, I love this device but it does show its age. The rounded edges are not just out of style it can get annoying with the reflections. The industry has moved past it the last few years. OLED burn in is a real thing and I wish repairability/replacing the battery wasnt such a huge pain in the ass, then I wouldnt want to upgrade as well. But the phone barely lasts through the day these days. But man it really is even now the sweetspot. 90hz, FULL nonotch/hole display and beautiful oled screen and still runs every app no problemo

Thanks for doing the comparison! I think I will get the 12R as the 12 is too out of my budget. May I ask if the lock app feature is available for the 12R too? Like for example it can leave genshin running in the background while you do other things with other apps, and when you come back to the game, it doesnt reset. That was my gripe with playing mobile games like those

Current prices:
* OnePlus 12 - 1000 euros (with buds worth about 130 euros).
* OnePlus 12R - 709 euros

Excellent display, good battery capacity, excellent chipset and a decent camera.
Very little for such a starting price.
Without wireless, with two far below average cameras and very poor selfie camera...
As a huge fan of OP, this should be around 500 eur max.
Same situation like Honor´s phones. One giant flagship (I do not care abou foldable) and behind them just average phones like Honor 50,60 or even 90. At least, they started around 450 eur...

I heard they're region-locked. I really wanted the white one but apparently they don't pick up bands outside of China.

edit: 12R gets one year LESS of updates! 12 gets 4x Android OS updates and 5 years of security. The 12R gets 3x Android updates and 4 years of security, probably because of the Gen 2 chip.
i hate how these mid/low range brands have massive camera module bumps ,yet perform awful in comparison to premium brands with smaller bumps ,its false advertising to the point its cringe , an analogy would be a man putting socks down his trousers to look bigger

You have no idea what "false advertising" means not to mention that it's such a silly complaint to begin with.
What differentiate between flagships and flagship killers is usually the camera. The performance and most other useful things are almost the same. If they gave you perfect camera why would you buy a flagship?
Well, that lens does actually make a difference on the performance of the sensor in some cases. Some newer midrange phones with custom software can take "better than expected" shots compared to slightly older flagships that use tiny lenses and don't allow great exposure. These systems aren't so black and white, a lot of fine tuning of both the hardware and application can make or break a camera

Curved looks nicer however it makes it:
- more prone to breaking the screen if dropped
- Harder/more expensive to find glass screen protectors
- You get the light reflection along the curved edges
- And most importantly, you get accidental touches on those edges
