Basically don’t tattoo face and hands. Don’t tattoo yourself just to associate with the culture, but you don’t even really have them all over the body. Basically just a show off and don’t be a wanna be. Especially if it hinders your life and your career because you want to look cool.
If I understand him correctly, he’s saying if you come in to his parlor and ask him to tat up your face and neck but have no other tattoos on you, he’s not going to do it because he doesn’t think you’ve really thought about the social consequences that come with having face tattoos. He didn’t phrase it very clearly, but he’s saying he feels he has an ethical responsibility to not be the one to help you ruin your life
Bullshit, by saying he can't even have a conversation with them, he's being a condescending prick. He didn't say he'd counsel them with sage advice, he just looks down his nose dismissively.
It went over nobody’s head because why tf does a tattoo artist think that he can provide input on someone else’s life choices and claim that someone’s tattoo choice is a result of poor thinking that’s what tf the tattoo industry is if he chooses not to do it that’s on him but his job is to tattoo people like this ain’t dr Phil
When I was 20 I wanted a Misfits skull tattooed over my entire right hand. I only had maybe 2 or 3 on my arms at the time and the artist refused, recommending I leave my hands and neck for last. I’m 33 now and eternally grateful.
THIS is what he's getting at. Even having sleeve tattoos showing 10-15 years ago were job stoppers alone depending on the job, let alone hand, neck and face tattoos. If you job doesn't care more power, just realize that job search of options isn't getting any better with those.
Jesus, we are in 2021. No one gives a shit if you have hands neck tattoos in developed and serious countries. What matters is performance and if someone filters you by tattoos the hiring manager can't be smart.
I will say that tattoos are much more culturally acceptable now, as a hiring manager i can confirm that obvious tattoos are not a deterrent in my screening process unless they are violent in nature. Seeing a big, dark neck tattoo will make me question your background a little bit but if you interview well and have experience I am not put off by your tattoos. Older generations might feel differently but fortunately millennials are starting to take over management positions;
That’s this lame culture today. You couldn’t get a job if you had tattoos in my days of growing up that’s why I work for myself as a tattoo artist and barber
I get it perfectly. I have both my hands tattooed and I understand what social consequences can come from it. But I also made the decision to not care what society says, does or thinks. And if you don’t understand that and don’t realize how you will be perceived upon first impressions, then he will not be part of that life outcome for you. Made perfect sense to anyone who already has made the decision to get such tattoos
I have the bottom of my forearm tattooed and I want to get the top and my hand done also to make a whole sleeve and I’m going to do it like you said I understand the negative effects having a hand tattoo but I don’t want to be around people who are going to judge me for it anyways I’m not doing it to impress anybody either I’m doing it because it’s the art I want to put on my body
Facts only thing I can say with some jobs to make more money I can’t have visible tatts and that kinda sucks but it’s ok… I’m behind the scenes anyways. Meaning like government jobs
Facts People are making it out to be something different but all he's truly saying is just "think before you make this decision". If you're cool with the decision he's cool with giving you the tattoo ultimately. Tattoos are much more acceptable now but depending on where you're looking to work they still very much can make it so you're not hired. And frankly if he's the artist you're going to he does have some level of authority of what he does in his work.
He saying why would people who still have to work regular 9 to 5 jobs start with face, neck & hand tattoos first without touching any other part on your body

Say flip this and a really good looking or lass tries to get this contract, and they get it partly on looks? I am a tattoo artist, i wouldn't really judge somebody with it, its their body and stuff like that. I think what he is trying to say is, "If you are not fully in this, don't have a tattoo that people will judge you with" It is really hard to find a job with a face tattoo for example. It's not him gatekeeping, he's stating facts, when you get face & hand tattoos it can be very hard to find decent employment & a lot of people end up regretting getting their face/hands/neck done first. It’s an old school mentality but I agree with him. There’s a level of respect you need to have for the art so you would get at least a few tattoos on your arms/torso/back/legs/feet before committing to anything ultra-visible like hands, neck or face. You have to know for a fact that visible tattoos are right for you. It is almost like “earning” the right to have those tattoos within the tattoo culture.
Translation: you should save your neck and hands for last. A lot of places won't hire people with neck/face/hand tattoos because it's such a visible spot that can't be easily covered up. A lot of tattoo artists won't do tattoo those areas unless you have either a substantial amount of tattoos, or they're sure / they make sure with you that it won't affect your job or living situation just because people are so judgmental. That's basically what he means. Today's culture? When the fuck did people not do that? In fact "Today's culture" is increasingly less judgy about outward appearances. Now we're just judgy about political and moral holdings.

Man most people don’t care about the “tattoo culture” this guy is talking about. They just get the tats that they like, as they should. Don’t allow the “culture” to dictate what you should and shouldn’t get. Get what you want.
I don't think he explained it well, but he said "someone who gets hands, neck and face and NOTHING ELSE." Yes, it's a look, a different look than was traditionally acceptable or even really possible in legit tattoo culture 20, 10, even five years ago. But if you have NOTHING else it does give off the impression that you're getting tattooed to look cool/so that other people will see your tattoos and not because you really love them. Not saying that's fair, but it's definitely something I've thought to myself before--especially since a lot of younger people who have just the visible stuff done also have a ton of copied pinterest tattoos which will never be cool no matter how much times change.
I have a few “Pinterest” tattoos and a few with my own unique customizations. No one including myself will ever think my tattoos are cool. Weird, sexually stimulating, burnt out. Yes. My arm looks like a Mescaline trip. But I love my tats and got them foe No1 else. Being cool is overrated.
I think it stems from social media (like most things do) because your hands, neck and legs are parts that many people will see, so it's usually for achieving a certain aesthetic rather than what it used to be, which is an actual meaningful symbol.
He’s saying you used to have to earn face and hand tattoos by having lots of ink elsewhere, which proves you know what you’re getting yourself into. And even then you used to have to wait. I know artists that won’t schedule a face tattoo sooner than a year from when a deposit is paid. That year is for you to think about it and make sure you still want that ink on your face permanently. These days too many unscrupulous artists will just take the money and tattoo whatever you want wherever you want whenever you want. Basically, if someone has face and hand tats and no other ink, they’re a fucking poser.
This guy is actually among the top tattooists in the world really very wel known and appeared on a tattoo show I believe… he’s just saying people get tattoos to show off in unhidable places yet have none on any other parts of their body

As someone that isn’t into tattoos or tattooing I’m shocked to learn what stigma there is in the community against certain things. I guess everything really does have a meaning even when that meaning is subjective to individuals. Makes me wanna stay clean tbh. I don’t like how people with tattooos judge each others work. Why would you get it done permanently if you didn’t fuck with the idea of having it in the first place.

These people are everywhere in the tattoo scene. They’re arrogant gate keepers that are pissed they had to sacrifice jobs in the 90’s for their hand jams but we can have our foreheads tatted and own companies
He’s not even talking about the art itself he’s talking about people getting shit tatted in a highly visible area when they don’t have tats anywhere else.
Yep. Its funny how tattoo culture is all about self expression and being you, but you have bozo’s like dude in the video judging folks for having their first tattoos in visible places like the hands or the face. Every single subculture is riddled with judgmental pricks like this guy.
@Jen_Jen B there’s no point. It’s my body my choice. I don’t care if this bum thinks I’m lame because I didn’t cover my back before I got my forearm done. And he’s a loser for even saying this. I fully get his “point”. I just think judging someone because they have tattoos in a different area than you is a beta mindset.
He comes from an era where getting tattooed in visible places was earned and ment something. I believe he means younger people now a days only want those highly visible spots tattooed without working your way to what was once earned or was covered last by heavily tattooed people 🤷♀️
Not only that but it also makes it harder for people to find jobs & those that do it because it's trendy end up regretting it then blame the artist for "ruining their life".
That era is gone. I haven’t had an employer care about my tattoos since 2010 lol everywhere I go, I see workers with visible tattoos. My doctor doesn’t even hide his anymore. I get why this was a mindset 10+ years ago but I don’t get why it’s still being pushed when it rarely applies in 2021. It’s giving me “back in my day” boomer energy.
@@vyndeliagates3437 Thats exactly what it is. In relatively modern times tattoos were held by criminals and sailors, either way you had your career choice. The navy still has a dope tattoo policy but dont get your hands or neck tattooed if you have no skills and want a good career. Even if you dont care about that those places were held for after you've earned it by wearing other ink for a bit. Mostly American traditional style as opposed to say a tribal, sleeves and pieces were earned for achievements and not done in a session or two. Each piece was like a badge and the last earned were your neck and hands. Years of progression and not just a six hour session. Tribal like Polynesian might get a sleeve in a single session but that was also earned through achievements in life. Now people get full/half sleeves for the look, hands and neck first for the look and its sad because most are young and regret it when they learn they have no skills and look unprofessional. Nobody cares about the carpenter with 30 years experience and a full body suite but they care about hiring the high-school kid with neck tats that can't read a tape.
Exactly. An old school artist tattooed down my wrist on to the top of my hand and it was a big deal. Being that im short and I can hide the tops of my wrists with regular length sleeves, he was ok with the fact it wouldn’t mess up jobs. Love this short!

Trying to live in the past while the future keeps pushing on is dumb. Isn't it time to move forward? We do business with wife killers, but tattoos on the neck and face are the problem.
No it’s not. Because ppl have their preference so you think you sound smart about somebody else’s decision on where they want a tattoo. I do tattoos and the only tattoos I don’t do is a false man that is portrayed as Jesus Christ, penis tattoos and ass tattoos on men. Those are not my area of work so does that make me less of a tattoo artist?
"..when he's just trying to look out for you" - Just like drug laws, eh? No. How about one adult not telling another adult what they can, and/or cant do with their own bodies. If the artist doesn't want to participate that's the artists decision. But this bs about pretending to know what's best for another adults life is dumb. Whether the artist turns out to be right, or wrong its not his place to tell another adult anything about themselves.
He's not being paid to "look out for you" he's being paid to tattoo art on people. Either stfu and do what you're being paid to do or close down your shop. Nobody truly gives a single fuck what another person thinks about what's going on their own body.
I remember when I went in for a tattoo appointment the first time at 19, the guy _grilled_ me for almost 10 minutes. He kept telling me, "Make sure you know what you're doing, this shit can cost you jobs if it's too visible in some sectors, you might have to deal with scandalized aunties (I'm Indian) who see it. Make sure you _know_ what you're in for." Apparently he'd seen a lot of college students regret tattoos within weeks, so if anyone was under a certain age, he wouldn't tattoo above the collar or over the cuffs.
I think it all depends on placement and how many you have.. grandmas and mother’s and what not, usually have little tattoos that are usually hidden (1 or 2) however like myself, I get tattoos in the most undesirable places. Chest, back, legs, etc. and usually big pieces. So I still believe it’s counter culture for some.. and a trend for others.
Not true. My parents and the majority of my my family are very traditional and conservative. Only 3 of my 70 something cousins have visible tattoos (hands, face, etc) and they happen to be the black sheep of the family SIMPLY BECAUSE they were ok getting visible tattoos

he’s not being judgmental for no reason it’s just that most tattooers are just extremely passionate about the craft and try to protect it from people trying to capitalize off something they don’t actually give a damn about tattooing isn’t just a job, it’s a culture/lifestyle and it’s very sacred to us if you’re passionate about tattoos whether you’re an artist or not, you just understand that there’s a way you do things and a way you don’t... hand/neck tattoos are something you earn as you go along your journey getting tattooed plus, for a long time heavily tattooed people were outcasts and now you have people taking shortcuts to appear to be heavily tattooed because it’s popular we take pride in actually being fully blasted and not just tattooed in the right areas to appear it but at the end of the day people can get whatever they want, but to be taken seriously in the culture you gotta actually be about it
As another artist on here had previously mentioned, having visible tattoos does not mean it is an invitation for ppl to gawk at them necessarily, thus it could just be that person's aesthetic. I think the subject matter, composition, and application are all much more valuable judgements to think about when looking at artworks. Placement of artwork on the body as symbolic gesture is also another facet to empower an artwork.
Or just don’t be a snobby prick and act like any and every tattoo is art in inself as well as any other form of expression :) you must be fun to be around :)
It’s because back in the day having visual tattoos meant discrimination, I sorta agree with you should only be getting your hands, neck face tattooed after you’ve done a lot of work on other parts of your body.
But he's kinda right though, I know a lot of young people who wanted a face tattoo or hand tattoo as their first ones just because they're trendy. Getting tattoos that arent easily hidden when you're young may not seem like a big deal, but it really can affect your entire career. I know people who have been denied jobs or promotions because of their face and neck tattoos, not saying it's right, but there are still SOO many people who judge you based on tattoos.

Based on my observations, typically the only other people who choose to get face, neck, and hand tattoos (the ones who don’t fall into the “financially successful” category) are people who are in gangs and/or those who have chosen to use and abuse substances… both of which impair logical, common sense thinking… Their ignorant choices are evident for everyone to see…

No, he's saying if it's personal which a tattoo is. It should be something private. When someone deliberately gets a visible tattoos off the rip. It's not about art, private memories, values, ect... It's about showing off like a fuck boy. It also is a reflection of a generational gap. Since the early 40's-50's until recently. People literally had their careers end because of a visible tattoo. So making that jump to visible was something you had to really want. It meant more to people. Now any idiot teenager doing too much xanax has one.

It made perfect sense, the man tattoos for the love of tattooing hence why he has the old ways ingrained in him, most modern artists know jack shit about the history of tattoos in the western world, and it shows, but this man respects the old ways of earning your ink, get your arms legs back chest covered first, feel the pain, shed the blood and live with these permanent art pieces for while before you get ones that everyone else can see and judge, problem is people these days want everything right away, not to mention a person who decides on getting a hand/neck/face tattoo as their first probably hasn’t put alot of thought into that decision, how it’ll effect the rest of their lives, and is far more likely to regret it……so why should he waste his time tattooing someone like that.
@@reecez0zr he is nothing but an old bitter man upset that kids can get any tattoos that want and don’t give a shit wha he has to say about it. I was 100% agreeing with you but when he explained it at the end I get it. He doesn't want to tattoo someone in a 'bad place' who has 0 experience with tattoos. Getting your face tattooed and not fully understanding how it changes the way people, and jobs, look at you can be weirdly dangerous for your livelihood. I still kinda disagree and you should let people do what they want, but I get his logic and I don't think it's bad logic.
I love Anthony and supported his win on Ink Master. However, this is so judgemental. For someone who was judged and ridiculed for not having experience (less than 5 years when he did Ink Master) when he was working his way up in the industry, to be judging those with just neck/face/hand tattoos?? Really?
it's kinda odd to me too. what if someone gets only 1 tattoo and one of those places is where they want it? why judge them? why is so important to have like a half body suit before they could have on those visible places? makeup exist, they can cover it up if their job doesn't want the tattoos to be seen.
It’s part of tattoo integrity and earning your stripes, do whatever you want but you can’t expect respect from people in the tattoo industry for doing things ass backwards
It isn't even a thing of earning your stripes. It's covering your own back. Alot of people come in to your shop day in and day out asking for stupid shit. Sometimes it's following a trend, sometimes it's a silly joke, sometimes to mark a romance. Alot of the time they don't understand or think fully of the consequences of their actions. If they decide they don't want it or it's an inconvenience somewhere down the line, they can bad mouth you or start making ridiculous demands. Its much easier to trust a client that has lots of tattoos to understand the aftercare, treatment by others and so on if they have lots of existing ink. There is more to this than gate keeping. Also hands, (knuckles especially) are harder to heal and often need touch ups etc. Also faces tend to fade due to sun exposure etc. Alot of artists dont want to be known in the industry as "that person that will tattoo anyone's face/neck/hands". It comes with a bad reputation.
Think this quite a common thing with artists. They believe you have earn things like hand tattoos. The place I got mine done wouldn’t touch the hand until the arm was fully sleeved and the hand tat was earned. I understand why it’s like that. By the time you get the whole arm done you will fully know and understand if you gonna be happy with a tattoo that’s impossible cover. Unless you wear gloves all you life.

A lot of places won't hire people with neck/face/hand tattoos because it's such a visible spot that can't be easily covered up. They are "job stopper" tattoos. It's best to wait until you have a lot more tattoos before you make a huge decision like that.
A lot of tattoo artists won't do tattoo those areas unless you have either a substantial amount of tattoos, or they're sure / they make sure with you that it won't affect your job or living situation just because people are so judgmental.
That's basically what he means. It sucks that people are so judgmental when it comes to tattoos and visibly seen ones, and the industry is slowly changing in some parts of the world, but unfortunately people still get judged for those tattoos because they're so visible and harder to cover up.
Edit: I have nothing against tattoos and where they’re placed (obvious exceptions being racist/homophobic/etc. ones) I even have some in these placements myself. This is just what I got from this video, and my translation of what they’re saying.

Those are not my area of work so does that make me less of a tattoo artist?
"..when he's just trying to look out for you" - Just like drug laws, eh? No. How about one adult not telling another adult what they can, and/or cant do with their own bodies.

Whether the artist turns out to be right, or wrong its not his place to tell another adult anything about themselves.

Depends on where the tattoo is, as the man said..
As Ozzy Osbourne says if you want to be different don't get a tattoo
I think it all depends on placement and how many you have.. grandmas and mother’s and what not, usually have little tattoos that are usually hidden (1 or 2) however like myself, I get tattoos in the most undesirable places. Chest, back, legs, etc. and usually big pieces. So I still believe it’s counter culture for some.. and a trend for others.

He totally gets that placement of tattoos can be a life altering decision… one that will go with you until you breathe your last breath. And making the wrong choice will very likely have a negative impact on ones ability to get a good job or earn a sustainable income.
IMO, unless someone is a famous musician or a very experienced and skilled tattoo artist… or unless someone is so wealthy that they will never have to work a regular job to support themselves, then don’t get face, neck, or hand tattoos.
Based on my observations, typically the only other people who choose to get face, neck, and hand tattoos (the ones who don’t fall into the “financially successful” category) are people who are in gangs and/or those who have chosen to use and abuse substances… both of which impair logical, common sense thinking… Their ignorant choices are evident for everyone to see…
If someone wants their face or anything tattooed,… that’s their right. What if they don’t want leg or arm or torso pieces ? They aren’t allowed to get tattooed now ? Obviously you have the right to refuse to do it but still.

He’s trying so hard to say something but to not aslo sound like a douch bag as lose customers
