It was ok, Dunkirk was very clean no bombed out buildings, no litter at all on the beach, and I dont think I saw a single character at all smoke one cigarette. Really really bad, like really really bad.
telling the story of Dunkirk didn't needs the non-linear story structure, but in the hands of a master like Chris Nolan in certailnly benefitted from this decision.
I think Dunkirk was a great film, and I loved the timeline stuff! I don't think people in the cinema with me appreciated it much though, judging by there conversations as we were leaving
I was very confused watching this in the movie theater. It was jumping between different days and hours It wouldn't be so confusing if I watched it at home having an opportunity to rewind a few times to understand when the scenes were taking place.
I love Nolan and his hyper-realism films. The way he makes something so complex look so simplistic and the way he told the story was classic Nolan. Being a war vet myself, seeing how time almost felt as if it stopped, felt the most true and real. I felt it as if I was back in combat again. The sudden action and then peace and quiet right after and acting as if nothing happened felt the most realistic telling of war.
Brilliant commentary on the film. This video made me appreciate Dunkirk even more. I loved the film, including the way the timelines were handled. The film honors its subject -- the historical event, as well as the sense of close-up individual human experiences. For me the film conveyed the enormity of the event, the danger, the tragedy and the courage. And so gorgeously filmed.
The historical importance of Dunkirk is something I feel will be lost on most movie goers... If things had gone south, we may be living in a completely different world! I would have like to have seen (at least in the form of an epilogish text) an explanation of how much of a turning point in the war this was. To be fair, Nolan does this very well, but it kind of requires that the audience has a deep understanding of what took place in order to realize the gravity of the events! That's my only criticism... It was a theatrical spectacle that I will never forget!
re-watch the end with subtitles....i agree with you first time i watched it it felt like the significance was lost on first watch. but after listening to the conversation at the end between the 2 soldiers on the train and watching the reactions of everyone involved...it was pretty clear that it dawned on them how significant their victory was.
If Peter Jackson directed Dunkirk: Dunkirk part 1 The mole [Two years later] Dunkirk part 2 The sea, floaters and sinkers [That same summer] Dunkirk part 3 The air, Bane in a plane
The detractors complaints are mainly how Nolan didn't follow every prior known war movie in existence... Nolan subverts the war genre just like he did neo noir, comics and sci-fi
It took me about 25 min to figure out the timeline structure, but then I really liked Dunkirk. Is amazing. I think the film would have worked with lesser known actors too because there film itself is the star.
"he made one of the best superhero movies" "one of the best heist movies ever" "one of the best sci-fi movies" "and now one of the best war films ever" now I want Nolan to direct One Piece live action!!
The editing made it seem like Hardy's plane was gliding forever. Soldiers had already made it home and the boy's death was in the paper, yet Hardy's plane was still gliding. That made it a bit confusing.
The HBO series The Pacific did a great job of showing multiple perspectives during WWII. It was created by Tom Hanks and Steven Speilberg. It's also one of few movies/ shows that doesn't glamorize war, it's shown for what it is.
How is it possible that the destroyer 036 has crossed with the "Moonstone" (18 min. aprox.) , if it had already been sunk by the torpedo? Is there something I misunderstood?
dunkirk was amazing tension wise, but where it failed for me is making me invested in the characters stories. i can't remember a single characters name. i was constantly getting the dark haired white guys mixed up. maybe that was to leave them as blank canvasses for the everyman, but it really didn't work for me.
This movie is more like a puzzle in which pieces come together in a perfect way and eventually puzzle is solved. The thing is most of the people couldn't see it and they unfairly criticize Nolan.
Saving Private Ryan, A Bridge Too Far, Patton, The Thin Red Line, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now, Hacksaw's Ridge, Hamburger Hill, Paths of Glory, Midway, Deer Hunter, Inglorious Bastards + Basterds, The Battle of the Giants, are also great. Watch them if u like war films.
Not saying that the structure was faulty... I don't even have a problem with us finding out people's Fates in other timelines. That was actually good. A few scenes fell a little out of place. Like that scene with Cillian Murphy denying the soldiers to board on the boat. The screenplay was good, bit not a very solid one.
Ii wonder how he would handle it. He should dabble in almost every genre(if he wants to)... but i think Nolan said he wouldn't want to do a comedy or romantic comedy(i forgot which one) but would like to see if he is capable of doing a zombie flick, 007 movie,
It was comedy I believe. And the reason he stated is that it is quite difficult to do a good comedy, one that would please a larger audience, and himself too. As for the next genre he's using, I wished he went into the fantasy direction, but it will probably be something more simple. My bet is on a "simple" drama, or a Western. Maybe another sci-fi thriller, he's made several of those, but maybe he keeps getting back.
Is the golden age of Nolan over? Before 2012 his movies were almost flawless and everyone loved them. But since TDKR all his movies has had major backlash and a lot of issues and people are saying they lost their trust in Nolan
Dunkirk has three different timeline, I'm really surprise Jeremy Jahns didn't get that. I used to like his review a lot, now i like Chris Stuckmann review style more.
I agree with Jeremy Jahns. I still don't get the timeline thing either. This movie was a mess for me, with no character development at all. I couldn't remember the names of any characters nor did I care for them. This movie was saved by the fantastic visuals and camera work.
I disagree with Jeremy's opinion, but I understand why he wasn't into it.... Him like most people have a way with which movies like this ought to go - Nolan subverts this just like how he subverts neo noir, comics and sci-fi genres. Kinda amazing people walked into Dunkirk expecting Saving Private Ryan Part 2 or something....
The Germans painted the noses and rudders of the Bf-109's yellow so that they stopped shooting each other down (they had quite a few blue on blue (friendly fire) incidents) when they started fighting the RAF over the Channel at the start of the Battle of Britain in July 1940 (about six weeks after this film is set). Its not accurate for Dunkirk, but Nolan wanted the viewers (the vast majority of which are not aircraft spotters) to be able to tell the Spitfires and Bf-109's apart.
I feel like there needs to be more world war 2 movies about the British armed forces, there seems to a be a disproportionate amount of movies following the American military
People need to stop complaining about not doing Marvel or DC stuff...there's gonna be a ton of that. This movie was absolutely amazing and I'm happy there's videos on it.
Nolan Likes to keep things simple in a most complex way possible.
The structure worked from start to finish.
I thought it worked from finish to start.
It was ok, Dunkirk was very clean no bombed out buildings, no litter at all on the beach, and I dont think I saw a single character at all smoke one cigarette. Really really bad, like really really bad.
Loved the film throughout ...
I loved this movie so much, it was incredible, that writing, the camera work, the actors, absolutely incredible
telling the story of Dunkirk didn't needs the non-linear story structure, but in the hands of a master like Chris Nolan in certailnly benefitted from this decision.
5:12 always loved how well that scene was made
All Hail Christopher Nolan.
Awesome movie just wached it today
I think Dunkirk was a great film, and I loved the timeline stuff! I don't think people in the cinema with me appreciated it much though, judging by there conversations as we were leaving

Hhhhhm. Times when Erik was much calmer and took less Bang energies lol
Nolan is gain success from Superhero genre, heist, science fiction, and now war, I challenge him to make a MUSICAL!
can he top baby driver tho?
how about a romance movie
With zimmer by his side he can do anything!
HORROR

Cillian Murphy's character wasn't a deserter. He was the sole survivor, as far as we see on the screen (in the air section), of a ship which was sunk.
Yeah true how can you desert when you're in the middle of Sea's
I watched this last night, it was an AMAZING movie.
If people really don't go to this movie because America isn't in it... well that would be the most ignorant thing I've ever heard.
God i love your reviews
The best explanation of Dunkirk's exposition I have seen/read. Thank You.

It was amazing when I watched it I felt like I was there I was on my edge of my seat the whole movie start to finish
Good vid, Erik looked a lot younger and livelier then haha.
If Peter Jackson directed Dunkirk: Dunkirk part 1 The mole
[Two years later]
Dunkirk part 2 The sea, floaters and sinkers
[That same summer]
Dunkirk part 3 The air, Bane in a plane
ALMOST 1,000,000 SUBSCRIBERS!
DON"T KNOW what the critics are talking about. It's a GREAT, touching movie
The detractors complaints are mainly how Nolan didn't follow every prior known war movie in existence... Nolan subverts the war genre just like he did neo noir, comics and sci-fi

I just saw Dunkirk yesterday. I am still emotionally processing it right now. So good.
Nolan was disciplined in not pandering to unbridled gore of today's war movies. Dunkirk is a visual story and a dang good one at that.
After seeing this video I understood that i did understand the movie the second time but i didn't know until i saw this video😄
This was filmed in Weymouth, were I live. ;)
Harley Randall and me!
This is such a good and accurate review
Meddling with timeline to create alternative suspence is Chris Nolan's forte, his movie is just delicious the way it is.
Just watched this movie for the first time, knew very little going in, ended up loving it.
Why is everyone saying it's a battle? It's not. The battle happened before the events of the movie. This is the evacuation.
This review gave me even more appreciation for a film I already loved!
This is the most childish and butthurt comment section I have ever seen
ikr it's disappointing and sad honestly
Just came back from watching the film and I thought that it was an amazing film and it made me feel like I was in the war
"he made one of the best superhero movies"
"one of the best heist movies ever"
"one of the best sci-fi movies"
"and now one of the best war films ever"
now I want Nolan to direct One Piece live action!!
NAUR😭
@@strinqslol underrated comment
Really like this review and some of the points about theams.
The editing made it seem like Hardy's plane was gliding forever. Soldiers had already made it home and the boy's death was in the paper, yet Hardy's plane was still gliding. That made it a bit confusing.
Very great and helpful video !
The HBO series The Pacific did a great job of showing multiple perspectives during WWII. It was created by Tom Hanks and Steven Speilberg. It's also one of few movies/ shows that doesn't glamorize war, it's shown for what it is.
Melanie Montoya Dunkirk didn't glorify it either.
Cillian Murphy was my neighbour for years in Ireland. Amazing person
fifimac lucky af
fifimac must be weird seeing your former neighbour in a blockbuster movie every once ina while
The clever timeline is what made this movie possible. Only Nolan can make this happen.
How is it possible that the destroyer 036 has crossed with the "Moonstone" (18 min. aprox.) , if it had already been sunk by the torpedo? Is there something I misunderstood?

Great analysis 👍
I don't question Christopher Nolan. Great movie. Nuff said
I hope Nolan, Hoytema and Zimmer get married and keep doing movies together until they die.
Thnaks for the video!
This movie is more like a puzzle in which pieces come together in a perfect way and eventually puzzle is solved. The thing is most of the people couldn't see it and they unfairly criticize Nolan.
Great review!
I thought this movie was fantastic. Definitely the most intense movie I have seen.
Nearly at 1 million subs whoop whoop.
Tom hardy is such a good actor he can't do one bad thing

I haven't watched the movie yet. But I still want to watch this video.
Please don't spoil. Just go and watch the film.
honesty it deserved and needs right now. took me a while but very hilarious pun.
The Royal Navy was able to lift off 350,000 thousand Brtish,French and Belgium troops operation Dynamo.
One of the best movies I ever watched
The Batman thing from TDKR killed me. lmao
Anyone want a sequel called "D-Day" ?
We already got it, being Saving Private Ryan, but I wouldn't mind it.
Wow this is like the type of stuff I'd write in an English Lit exam haha
Fantasy. We need a good fantasy movie by Nolan now.
Ii wonder how he would handle it. He should dabble in almost every genre(if he wants to)... but i think Nolan said he wouldn't want to do a comedy or romantic comedy(i forgot which one) but would like to see if he is capable of doing a zombie flick, 007 movie,

Someone send this to people who were confused about why Nolan did it.
I went to watch Dunkirk at the cinema. Loved it!!

What's with the yellow noses on the Luftwaffe planes?
