    I think we all split hairs over which ammo is best, but the HST's performance in any weight is not to be denied. The HST makes a great "Carry" round.

      He is! He just came out with a video stating why he stopped and that he is going to start them up again. Sounds like he had some big medical issues, brother your in my prayers, thank you for your videos. You steered me to the HST 124 gr. +P in my carry S&W shield.

      Indeed. I feel RUclips demonization of firearm videos had a lot to do with it. None of the components for these videos are cheap, plus the creators time. If they could at least break even, I think one or both may have continued.
      And so far, there is no one who has stepped up produces the same quality of video.

  • @DJ.1001
    @DJ.1001 5 лет назад +36

    I've shot the 124 and 147 back to back out of a shield. The 147 is a much softer shooting round and is pretty much identical to the feel of a typical 115gr range ammo load. They also shoot dead on. Doesn't get any better than this.

    Excellent! Been carrying this load for a couple of years in my Nano, so I'm happy to see that it performed as I have always expected it to. I previously carried the 124 grain +P HST but switched to standard pressure 147 because I find it easier to shoot accurately and I believe it penetrates more consistently. I do tend to like heavy-for-caliber as well.

    I've been a 45 acp man for most of my adult life. But with the evolution of the 9mm self defense round especially the HST's. Im thoroughly convinced that this 147 gr. round will be more than adequate to give me the knock down power that I desire. Thanks for the video and the professionalism of the testing.

    • @TracyClark
      @TracyClark 8 лет назад

      Same here. However, I still like the slower .45 for home defense as we live close to other houses & I think the .45 can do as much or more damage at a slower speed with less probability of over penetration.

    • @Woowoo88
      @Woowoo88 6 месяцев назад

      115 and 124 both have more "knockdown power" than the 147 grain bullet. Good thing knockdown power isn't really a thing in semi auto pistol.

    • @andershilmo1866
      @andershilmo1866 Месяц назад

      @@Woowoo88yes the knock down power thing is not true at all. Just think of all the deer that get shoot with 270 330 even 30-06 and still take of running even with good bullet placement. Which is why police are trained to fire until the suspect drops the gun or falls down incapacitated.

    Thank you very much for your videos. After watching videos for hours, reading tons of reviews, and lots of antagonizing, I settled on the Fed. 147 HST Standard Pressure for my Glock 26. Might not penetrate as deep as some, but still plenty sufficient, and I never saw the 147 HST SP; under-penetrate, over-penetrate, separate, or fail to give that huge, sharp, well defined expansion.
    Thanks Again!

    I absolutely agree. I still use my 45 for home defense. Simply because for home defense your encounter with perpetrators will be very close. That's when the cannonball round of the 45 will be most effective. I also use the HST in my 45.

      Why? Because it won't feed reliably. In some guns it does but like ALL SD ammo you have to go with what feeds reliably as close to 100% of the time as you can find. A few mags worth is not going to tell you. Shoot several hundred at least. I run HST's in my 45, Speer GD's in my .40 and Golden Saber's in my 9. All are good loads and all feed differently.

Your tests have been quite eye opening and have changed my thoughts on some 9mm ammo that I have carried in the past. Without pulling the cartridge apart you can tell the new from the old by the blue lacquer around the primer , the old version has no lacquer.
    If you do pull it apart then you can see some other changes they made

      The .45acp and .40s&w hst's are pretty famous. The 147gr 9mm hst's are why officers are opting for the .40s&w option despite the increased personal cost. I won't accept anything less than 15" of penetration in bare gel as a standard. Having shot enough hogs in my life the 9mm is just ok and nothing more despite them selling all the new bullet technology stuff. It's not going .357 fast, and it's not .40s&w heavy.

    • @murcielagosv9244
      @murcielagosv9244 6 лет назад +4

      In the FBI testing the 124gr failed the auto glass test. It's performance was abyssmal Jacket separation and only penetrated 9" afterwards.
      The 147gr also failed the auto glass test but performed better due to it's extra weight (more momentum) It was able to penetrate 11" into ballistics gel after the glass.
      This may not hold much weight for us civilians who probably will never shoot anyone in our lives, but just thought I'd throw that information out there. If you ever have to shoot through glass to protect yourself or your loved ones and you carry HST just know that through glass they perform no better than the infamous Winchester Silver Tip.
      The FBI favors penetration over expansion which is why Hornady won the most recent FBI service ammo contract.

      The early wound track is something that other testers focus heavily on, but in general, with most handgun rounds, it's largely irrelevant. In Duncan MacPherson's seminal work "Bullet Penetration", he created a formula for assessing how much tissue is destroyed by a bullet, in designing his "MacPherson Wound Trauma Indicator". In that formula, he totally discards all penetration below 8", and gradually progressively weighted higher up to 13", finally giving full credit for penetration from 13 to 15". In FBI testing or in Gary Roberts' professional testing, no mention of the early wound cavity is made at all.
      Prior to the introduction of modern bullet testing standards, there was a lot of focus placed on the temporary cavity and on the first 8 inches -- in fact, the old Relative Incapacitation Index formula, to which earlier bullets were designed to perform, focused entirely on the first 8 inches. And ammo that complied with that standard was found to be inadequate for acceptable terminal performance. The new standards (to which modern ammo is designed to perform) don't place any emphasis on early damage track performance.
      I generally don't bother with the early wound cavity damage, because it isn't what's important and most handgun bullets end up doing largely the same or very similar damage. Sometimes one type of ammo will do much more damage than another, and when that happens, I do break down the wound track and show what has happened in the block for those exceptions. The sustained damage done by the Lehigh Extreme Penetrator was such a substantial departure from the typical handgun bullet that I did a whole different type of review to show what was happening. I also will show detailed damage cavity examinations for highly powerful rounds such as shotgun slugs or rifle rounds.
      Some types of ammo do spectacularly large amounts of damage in the first few inches (such as fragmenting or frangible rounds) but those have been largely discredited in actual terminal performance. Large initial damage tracks in the first four or five inches of gel may translate into nasty shallow wounds, but are not sufficient to contribute to terminal performance.

    Great test as always. I really appriciate your contribution to our CCW community. I know your testing has had a great influence on my choices for carry ammo in my small single stack pocket 9mm pistols. I was curious though as to why you never tested Federals 9mm micro load? It seems it would be an obvious contender for testing such as yours. Ive had great interest in this offering since it is far more available in my area than any of the other HST offerrings. Thank you once again for all of your hard work on all of these tests!

    Lucky gunner did this exact load with only a half inch longer barrel and got +2 inches of average penetration from this test. Barrel length really makes a difference...

    I just bought a lot of this specific round based on these videos but had a very disconcerting trip to the range. I fired them through my Ruger LC9s and experienced many failures, like 6 or more in 25 shots. The rounds were hanging up in the magazines and failing to cycle, and one round jammed into the top of the chamber instead of sliding into battery. The failures occurred with 3 different mags. All the mags were the Ruger brand 9round extended mags which is what I carry and have never had other failures. It was cold and I'd fired my gun some without cleaning it prior, but I would never consider these excuses for such failures in a CC load, especially considering that I fired both cheap 115gr Blazer aluminum and some 124gr Speer Gold dot flawlessly before and after the 147 HST. My theory is that the 147gr rounds are slightly longer and caused them to jam in the mags, front to back. I'm going to try some in my Ruger SR9c and perhaps my XD9 and CZ P01 and CZ SP01. Maybe the double stack mags have a little more tolerance, or just the different models. I'm also going to purchase some 124 gr HST and give them a try (I'm pretty optimistic that this will work). I might also try some of the 147gr HST through the 7 round mags and see if for some reason that works better, maybe the 9 rounders have tighter tolerances (I find this unlikely). Let me know if anyone has any ideas.

The FBI actually prefer ammo that penetrates 14-15" in their testing. People need to remember that Gel is homogenous and that 12" in gel does not equal 12" into a human torso especially if it's a fat person.

    I can't find these anywhere I was able to find the 150 grain micro HST's specifically design for 3 inch barrel guns I would love to see that one tested and shown in comparison with the 147 grain 124 grain and plus P respectively

    Thanks for your clear, concise testing. I've been looking for quality, up-to-date testing of various types of ammo currently available. It's just silly for people to generalize "the 9mm" or "the .45" round when technology among various manufacturers, and their individual products, is so clearly different.
    I'm looking forward to more reviews on the other types of Federal HST ammo in both 9mm and .45. I know you are reviewing ammo specifically for 3-inch barreled firearms, but will you eventually move on to larger pistols? As well, I think you could be instrumental in clearing up the debate over the effectiveness of the FN 5.7 round. I would like to see you test the FiveseveN pistol with the various types ammo available including the defense ammo from Elite Ammunition. I understand that this could be way down the road, but if you could secure the pistol, I would be happy to provide the ammo. Thanks again for the quality videos.

    Any plans to test Team Never Quit 9mm ammo? Would be interested to see some high quality ballistic gel test with both their 100 gr frangible hollow point & 115 solid copper hollow point. Would really like their ammo to work as a piece of each sale benefits the Lone Survivor Foundation. However, before I carry it, I would like to see a decent ballistics test on it. Thanks for all the work that you do.

    I have a M&P Shield .40S&W on hold for a CCW handgun and have been considering buying the 9mm version instead (1 extra round & reduced muzzle flip). Most of my handguns are in .40 and I'm used to the recoil on a full size/compact handgun including my M&P40. That being said, I realize the recoil on a subcompact will be more noticeable, yet have not had the opportunity nor necessity to shoot a subcompact .40.
    I am wondering what the differences of muzzle energy, expansion, and penetration will be out of a Shield (3" barrel) in 9mm vs. .40S&W with a quality ammo like HST.
    Since I've put the Shield on hold, I wanted to do as much info gathering as possible, which is how I came upon your channel, before choosing the .40 over the 9mm (currently leaning towards 9mm).
    What are your thoughts?
    Thank you,
    Dave

    If you are referring to the temporary cavity, you are correct, but there is a significant difference in the volume of the earyly permanent cavity for the same penetration and final expanded size. And the important variable that controls this if the rate that the petals are folded back. There is a period od tifn time when the petals are folding back that the expanded area is larger, sometimes much larger, and the time that this occupies is a very important parameter in the effectiveness of the round, all else being equal. The only feasible nmeasurement of this is the permanent wound cavity volunme

    I use 147 gr standard pressure in a XDM 4.5" barrel, and a PPS M2 with it's 3.1" barrel. Accurate, no failures to feed or eject.

    Hello, And again thank you for all these test. We decided on the Lehigh XP for the Glock 42. How would you rate the recoil of thr Federal HST 124 to the 147 grain without the plus P. I'm an old hoot and not as strong as I use to be in my younger days😃

    I like the performance of both the 124 and 147 standard pressure HST in your short barrel test. Which would you think would perform best from a 4" Glock 19? I assume the increased velocity would decrease penetration and I would hope to stay in the 12 to 18 range. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

      Fortunately there are lots of published test reports on the HSTs from the G19. Doctor Roberts got 14.6" thru bare, and 15.6" thru denim, with the 147gr standard pressure HST. I can't seem to find where he's tested the 124gr.

      Thanks for your quick response! I enjoy your tests very much. I just got a Glock 42 and the tests with Precision One coming out on top was great. Now for them to get it back in stock! I am looking forward to 40 short barrel tests someday as I have a Glock 27 as well. Thans again!
