I love how this song points out what its really like living in modern small town south, lots of drugs and false faces in the shadows
More small towns than you know. Not even southern states. It's like this across the country
@@TJL_RC yep, and its hell being victim of that town let alone already the outcast.
Midwest too bro
I want to move south away from all the congestion…..don’t ruin it for me…😢
And people wonder why small town America is so hated…
I do so appreciate when a southern song is made by someone who has experienced the south in their heart. It always has such a heavenly ring to it.
You can always tell when an artist has a sense of rural groundedness, it’s got a bittersweetness in its authenticity.
He's from the southern state of Vermont :)
Agree! South in his heart! Regardless of where he is actually from. This song is timeless, placeless too! I found it at 9494ft in Colorado💛💛🎼
@T lan That's the South.
If you guys like this song and the way it sounds then search the name of the song to find more stuff you'll like. Southern Gothic is an actual music genre, it's also called dark country.
I appreciate you so much
That's true... And I really love it since the first time I heard it...
Im coming over from Gothic Rock and Black Metal...its an interesting twist!
I was searching the genre and I found this song.
Johnny Cash pioneered the genre. It’s as old, maybe older, than the actual goth subculture itself.
This gives off heavy supernatural vibes
Because though he isn't talking about voodoo or witchcraft in his music here it displays it
@@rachellinder2727 He's not... It's about the dark side of small towns, nothing witchy.
@large baguette I said he displayed it
If anyone lived in the south, they know True nature of it. The south is full of things that some of us thought were Myths, boy a good chunk of us was dead wrong. The woods holds a lot of secrets
I love how he is bringing to light the dirty gritty underbelly,of small town life not only in the south but all over the U.S.A.Btw.shout out from the Texas hill country.
w811
And the Minnesota woods.
Seems to me those who preach the bible understand it the least, or have forgotten its most fundamental beliefs. I absolutely hated god for a long time because of those people. Luckily, i found my way back to the light. Nobody pushes people farther from religion than jesus's own congregation. Lord knows, ill never understand it.
I’d much rather deal with my small town than the time I spent in Hawaii or New York.
@@bornfree8073 You didn't find the right preacher or congregation, they're the hardest part of Christianity to find, but my preacher not only gave his all for 3 years to drag me to a church but he's been my great friend, teacher, and light for over 4 years now and trust me, he's make me any hundreds other cry of conviction one minute and cry in thanks for having a merciful and gracious God the next, he's the best preacher and Southern Baptist I've ever met
How is this not popular??
It's brand new. Help get it out there, man!
It will be just wait! I’m working double time on Twitter and Facebook, unfortunately just started last night! It’s coming and it’s getting a GRAMMY AWARD 🥇, watch!
yay!
;(
Because it is autotuned commercially-watered down garbage compared to his old stuff which was the best bluegrass of our time.
I just discovered this. Why has this not gone #1 on country radio?
It's been playing here in North Carolina for a few months
Because those southern country music lovin folks don’t wanna hear the truth like this
I feel like this is every small town in South Carolina. Where I am from haha
Damn, gave me chills and thinking about what all the drugs have done to the town I grew up in.
When it talks about the momma popping pills.. Made me think of myself.. I'm on pain pills that I have been takin by prescription at same mg for past 5 or more years and I'm trying to clean it up I hate the person I have become since the 2nd yr being on them yet they hardly touch my pain yet Dr won't help me
@@rachellinder2727 I'm certainly not going to say its easy to kick or easy to deal with pain no matter what or where. The best way i learned is to hit it directly by dealing with it till you build up resistance against the feeling and location.
I personally had hydrocodone after a surgery removing my knee, part of my fibula, tibia and femur (cancer). It's all rods and false joint internally. They gave me that button dispenser thing yet still did a drip for 3 days afterwards. Made me want to sleep all the time, numb to everything and anything. I was aware to what was going on around, never sleeping, and simply "de*d". I recalled to how my old man was hooked on oxycontin and oxymorphone. I refused to end up a POS like him. Those 5 days after telling them to stop all pain meds and being on a mini "detox" were hell for me. Most violent and simply angery for no reason. A fly in my room, small tap, simply the vibration of a cart rolling down the hall or someone saying something would set me off like a gren*de. Litterally warned people not to enter because of it. That was just those few days on those pain meds. Took 2 years before I stopped feeling pain. Weather doesn't bother me either. I also have a messed up back due to a car accident and most recently it siezed to where i couldn't move for a week. Took no pain meds. I also did not have any pain medication when they removed a central line going by my groin on 1 side, into a vein and to my knee on the opposite side of the body. I felt it slide out of my body and pop out. Ticklish pain that made me near pass out. This was a month or two before my surgery. Pain is hell, but youll build to it. Now, i can take barb wire to the arm near the bone and simply feel a tug of my skin. The minor sting of a sharp object across my arm, by accident, feels like nothing. I simply feel the blood oozing.
Again, its not easy. It is hell enough to loose the pills just to live with pain for a while till you build up against it. The body is an amazing thing to what it can withstand, adapt to, and overcome anything.
Have lived in the south my whole life. This brings back memories, especially from my time living in Alabama
Grew up in Louisiana. This song sums it up.
Same here except I’m from Southern Maryland
Did y'all know this is the guy that did the singing for George Clooney in O Brother Where art Thou?
L Parker I just put 2 and 2 together the other day and the light bulb went off.
Was also the singer for "Hey Brother" by Avicii which is what brought about this style change from the bluegrass music he's known for
Hunter Covington oh wow I never even thought about that
I hope y'all know there's nothing like sprinkling "y'all"s all around in your comment to help represent.
Yes everyone knows that. Except apparently this new generation of teeny boppers all over this page. This is his worst music yet by the way. He used to be the greatest musician alive.
My mom showed me this song yesterday and I could help but sing along and my mother said the way I sung along made her think i knew the song and I didn’t know about this song until yesterday it was just a very good song it’s now my new favorite song
Perfect description of The South!
I thought I knew what evil was...until I lived in a small SC city where church attendance is just a cover for what they're really into. Almost everyone lives a double or triple life.
That's really goofy actually
@@LightLivingEst80 It's a fact. I met a few genuine Christians in the South, but the vast majority only attend church because it's expected and as a cover for a double life, or a triple life.
sounds amazing - this should've been a huge hit, but I guess he had set forth such a bluegrass legacy already
People don't want to listen to music like this in today's age, it's conviction music, it's music that'll pull at any bad thing you've done especially against God, and that gives sinners such a deep inner conviction they don't want to hear it
@@Casey_Bass lol get fucked, this does not make me believe any more in any fantastical sky ghosts
This is awesome! I love bluegrass, but all the fans here complaining that he's doing something different must have forgot his work with Avicii, or the electric stuff he has done with Alison Krauss. Most great artist hate doing just one thing, and want to branch out eventually. I'm glad he's went this direction.
Joshua Caleb Agreed. This just shows that Dan Tyminski is multi-talented and can do damn near anything he wants and master it
Kevin gates
Good music is good music. But tastes do vary. I'm rather grateful to have found it myself!
Yea 20 minutes later I realized this is the same man who sang I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow from O Brother where art thou?
Respect Level +1
well, in case you didn't know, come ioin me in bieng surprised and shocked cause I just knew he is also the guy who sang Avic's " hey brother", take a listen if you haven't heard it, his performance in the song is heaven
I usually hate the sound of modern day country vocals, but the insturmental, and the way his words flow into it warrant an addition into my favorites list. I've spent the last 72 hours looking for songs that resemble the theme of Hunt: Showdown.
Slamin Salmon, listen to Buddy Brown "Mason Jar" "Bounty Hunter "Delivery Time" he's got a lot of folklore that's insane awesome
Deep, deep South representing here! Been about 10 years since I've had chills like this over music. God bless Dan!
Woah, one of my favorite artists commenting on a new (to me) artist I just discovered....awesome! I'll be seeing him tonight at Nashville's premier record store, basically my second home, Grimey's!
Said it right! Good music with the right message. Makes the skin tingle.
Anybody wants to listen to incredible Southern Gothic music thats also religious, listen to 16 Horsepower(I could name a few others too). Cool though that Southern Gothic is becoming more known and mainstream. The lyrics and visuals of this video certainly capture the vibe but I was not expecting those type of vocals and the way it was styled.
All I can say is that I am in love
My favorite song
This is basically highlighting the small towns in the middle of no where down south. I like this
This feels like an intro to an intense netflix show.
True Detective s4
Hell yeah
I've even got a rough prompt for it if anyone's interested.
"A plantation town in the Reconstruction era Deep South, still shell-shocked and licking its wounds from the Civil War, struggles to come to terms with the end of slavery and the slow decay of its community, both religious and social. Why is this happening to them, they wonder? Surely the way of life they'd always known was what God would have wanted. ...right?"
Southern gothic would be the name of it to.
Right!?
I'm still addicted to Dan T . He's awesome & I really love this song & album 🎵
The dark side of country. Been a fan since Allison Krause and Union Station. Especially like Dan's phrasing on this one.
So, what’s it like to live in the rural south?”
“Here, listen to this track 1,000 times in a row.”
This honest and amazing.
I am not from the south, but as a Pennsylvanian country boy, this is so real. Young people my age and younger leaving the church. Evil happening every were. You just know God loves us, but he definitely shakes his head because of what we do every day. Millions of people have turned their back on God, and it is sad.
Old school country wrapped in the new sound of country!!! Love it!!! So glad I was able to find this one..Definitely the most underrated album of the year!!! "Every drunk in town can sing a brown bag hymn"..Just timeless lyrics...
Beyond the hospitality and the bench jumpers, there are dark secrets
“Mama ain’t stoppin poppin that cotton”
Aww shit that hit me right in the gut.
I love you mama. Rip.
Sorry what does "popping that cotton" mean? 😅
Blackbird on the old church steeple
Spanish moss hangin' in the settin' sun
Every house house has got a Bible and a loaded gun
We got preachers and politicians
'Round here it's kinda hard to tell which one
Is gonna do more talkin' with a crooked tongue
This town's got the good lord shakin' his head
Lookin' down thinkin' we ain't heard a word he said
A word he said
Baptized in Southern Gothic
In the garden of good and evil
Devil right here, who would've thought it?
In a town full of God-fearin' people
Dogs and deadbolts guard the night
Nothin' left to do but kneel and pray
We got a church on every corner
So why does heaven feel so far away?
Far away (ooh)
Must be somethin' in the muddy water
Turns the whisky 'bout as sweet as sin
Every drunk in town can sing a brown bag hymn
Good fences make good neighbors
But good neighbors make good lovers too
And when your man ain't home any man will do
This town's got the good lord shakin' his head (shakin' his head)
Lookin' down thinkin' we ain't heard a word he said
A word he said
Word he said
Baptized in Southern Gothic
In the garden of good and evil
Devil right here, who would've thought it?
In a town full of God-fearin' people
Dogs and deadbolts guard the night
Nothin' left to do but kneel and pray (kneel and pray)
We got a church on every corner
So why does heaven feel so far away? (Feel so far away)
Far away
High on homegrown, smokin' that brimstone
Mama ain't stoppin', poppin' that cotton
No happy ever after, waitin' on the rapture now
Baptized in Southern Gothic
In the garden of good and evil
Devil right here, who would've thought it? (Who would've thought it?)
In a town full of God-fearin' people
Dogs and deadbolts guard the night (guard the night)
Nothin' left to do but kneel and pray
We got a church on every corner (every corner)
So why does heaven feel so far away? (Far away)
Far away

"Every house house has got a Bible and a loaded gun"
I'm pretty sure he doesn't say house twice
I don't normally listen to country music but this song drew me in. Awesomeness at its best.
sure enough!!! thanx to Colbert...
totally......me too. Bought the CD :-)
Same. It’s different and I love it.
This is Rap, hip hop, garbage... Dan, leave the suburbs and come back to the rural people, we miss you.
I loathe county music and my friends all know this. These lyrics are fire!
ON GAD THIS MAN IS TALENTED AND DESERVES SOME SERIOUS FAME
People who say country isn't as good anymore clearly don't look very far for great music!!! Love pretty much bgg everything I have every heard this man sing!
Bought the whole album 2 hours after hearing this song for the first time and haven't taken it off repeat since. It's amazing, just hope it gets the airplay it deserves, this is a work of art!
Every song is good too! It was a whole day after I heard it before I purchased it! Had to drive out of the mountains of Colorado to get to a place I could even get internet to purchase the CD as well as digital copy! All these years later and well, it just doesn’t get old💛
Wow never has a song said outright the deep sadness that’s been in my heart growing up southern
How this album didn't win a Grammy, I will never know. This is the best album you have never heard of.
“We got a church on every corner
so why does heaven feel so far away?”
*Chefs kiss*
What an intense Voice, since Man of constant sorrow and Aviciis hey brother I'm big fan of Dan tyminski. Greetings from Germany
Sure ain’t sugar coated, but that’s what’s good about it.
anyone else like damn the message of this song is mad true
Anyone who won't admit it's true is covering up.
This should have been the theme to Justified! ♥️
SAW HIM IN CONCERT LAST NIGHT, EXCELLENT JOB... he was with kane brown, and Brad Paisley.... was BEAUTIFUL CONCERT.... WILLING TO GO BACK TO SEE ALL 3.. FIRST TIME SEEING ALL 3.. EVEN BRAD P .. mark it off my bucket list, but it was so great, almost as great as a NASCAR RACE, if u see my profile you will know how much i love NASCAR... Loved it.. great Music all night...... GOOD PEOPLE, : MY STATE NC, LOVES GOD, FAMILY, NASCAR AND GOOD COUNTRY MUSIC
This so literally had me crying…it feels like this song was Made for every small town Outcast.
Dan can literally do anything. Absolutely love this dude!!
A perfect confession....😢
Watched this on Colbert.....thank god I caught that episode. This song is fire!
Thats where I 1st heard him too .. I'm still addicted to his music 🎶
Small town evil is my favorite horror genre. I love this!!
Sounds exactly like my hometown
Mighty fine gothic country music
I’m glad my parents grew me up on good music
So did mine.. Only if mine wasn't so abusive verbally. Physically. Sexually
Just WOW! Saw this on Colbert and was blown away. Let's hear more from Tyminski!
yup, me too!!!
Colbert watchers .... that explains why everyone on this page is so clueless
He's been out for a long time. Sang for Allison Krause and Union station as well as himself for so long
Man, I just really love this song.
Very deep south here - the preacher and politician line really gets me.
I prefer his more traditional music with Union Station, but I also love this! Yes, it has a much more modern feel than what I'm accustomed to, but there is still a powerful message behind it. In my opinion, that's something that a lot of country musicians are missing these days.
I’m gonna keep this on repeat for awhile
For those that like the song, the album is worth a listen. Numb is another really good song from that album.
i'm 45, 6 foot four and 350 lbs of Texas Wrath, and the melody here moves me to tears. its a beautiful enchantment you've woven sir.
Southern gothic Tumblr loves this song.
This has become my new favorite song
Damn that's a great song.... And a wicked video.... How did I miss this before
Man y'all killed it on colbert. Im a fan👍👍
Matt Mize Strange musical guest for Colbert was my first thought. Agree with you though. 😎🌴☮
Just watched this vid because of Colbert - killer song!
yup!!! i didn't know him before; Colbert brought me to him-
and i woke up this morning w/the song just taking me over, HAD to hear it again (and again and again),
after listening a half dozen times to the Colbert performance few days ago...
I listen to mostly rap. This sht is a banger
This song is a Game Changer. Very Well Done
Devil in a town of God-fearing people, of course. Where else would he be.

I was NOT expecting that chorus 😮 So good
Tennessee representing, here.
Not into country. But these lyrics- I can relate.
What the crap!?! What the ever livin actual CRAP!?!?!?
I love Dan Tyminski but I listen to him when I'm in a bluegrass mood. If this song is the direction he's taking his skill and career then I won't be able to get enough of it!
I'm kinda fan girling right now which is odd for a dude. Jeez, I hope he keeps this up, my life just got soooo much better.
Caleb Struckmann Same here. I can't get enough
This song has been on replay all week for me! its beyond this world.
Caleb Struckmann Well technically you are fanboying if you are a dude, and it's not odd for a dude tbh.
This song and hip pop in general is so not good direction for and one.
It would be weird not to fangirl, fanboy, fanhuman about this masterpiece dude!
Amazing song. Perfect lyrics .. as someone who considers himself a amateur writer poet I have not enjoyed such a sound n words n related in a very long time ..
Never heard this until just now. Absolutely love this song. From small town Tennessee.
I really appreciate the raw honesty of this song.
Dan makes me love music again and I never listened to country music before. I have tried sence but Dan is the only 1 I like so far !!!
Can't believe I'm just finding this song, but glad I did.
This has so many elements of different styles of music in it i don't know what i would call it,but it's a revelation nothing out there quite like it.
All musicians strive to find that certain sound feel to every piece that He or She creates. Dan Ol' Boy... YOU DID JUST THAT!!!! EXCELLENT CREATION SIR!
Thank you Stephen Colbert for introducing me to Tyminski! Amazing!! I'm definitely an instant fan.
Patty Snow listen to his bluegrass his real stuff so to speak he was in a band called union station that is way better
Looking forward to receiving the autographed LP of this I ordered recently.
Dan, it was a real pleasure speaking with you after last night's concert at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, including our mutual enjoyment of music on vinyl. Words can't express the deep emotion you shared and how well all of you played together.
Keep up the great work and your feet on the ground. See you again soon, I hope.
This is not my typical genre of music. However the first time I heard it I probably listened to it like five times in a row. It inspired one of my paintings.
Amazing. In all aspects lyrics and visual.
Wow, stumbled on this song three days back. It has been on a repeating loop for HOURS! Awesome song, love the melody and the lyrics!!
With what I'm going through now. My family vs corrupted small town "Bible belt" politicians trying to rip my family apart for speaking up.. This speaks♡
This song is gooooodddd!!!’
Why are you not more famous? Seriously dude i was born in north Georgia and i live in east tn right now this music is the south
Reminds me of my home here in middle TN. This used to be a beautiful place and this is what happened to my home.
Saw him in concert this past weekend with Kane Brown and Brad Paisley - his music is DEEP and he's an amazing artist - I cannot get this song out of my head - LOVE IT!!!
If the True Blood became a genre of music. Fantastic lyrics, imagery and music!
You should probably check out the southern gothic genre I suggest uncle remus
This dude needs to be as popular as Garth Brooks. THIS is the kind of beautiful art the world needs more.
Awesome song
This video is pure art! The lyrics as well. The symbolism is amazing too. This is such a great embodiment of the Deep South as a whole. My family is very southern. My father was a lawyer/politician God rest his soul. My uncle is a preacher he is a very good man. In my father's family you either became a lawyer or preacher. It is interesting to think about. I love the South I would never want to live anywhere else.
Surround yourselves with God-Loving people, because they’ll do the right thing for the right reasons. God-fearing people tend to fear the Almighty, because they’re up to no good

Amazing lyrics by an amazing artist.
I’m not typically a country fan, but the visuals of this video drew me in, now he’s found a spot on my regular iTunes rotation.
Love it, I keep coming back to this video. Perfect track for Halloween 🎃 🕯
One of my favorite songs and videos ever. I even wrote a story inspired by the whole thing. The video is so symbolic to my life as well.
Came across this album on Spotify, as soon as I heard the first song I had to stay till the last one played. It is the dark side of Luke Bryant's I believe most people are good.
Well Said. I think I need to listen to 10 different songs from Luke to wash away the chills.
This song shocks the core of my soul. It is so relatable.
I don't listen to country music very much, but I bought this Cd and enjoy the whole CD. :-)
Wow 😮 hadn’t had a song GRAB me in 19 yrs, I’m 43, THIS ONE WONT LET ME GO!
