- This documentary shows the inspiration behind Inuit sculpture. The Inuit approach to the work is to release the image the artist sees imprisoned in the rough stone. The film centres on an old legend about the carving of the image of a sea spirit to bring food to a hungry camp.

My hometown. I am also named after Niviaksie. This was filmed before I was born. I grew up amongst these people and I recognize most. I saw my mom, ever young, dancing away. The land seen here had seemed so "pure" and untouched back then, since the town grew, things have changed dramatically. We are now living in houses. I never even slept in an igloo, only seen them first in films, later on they were built, just to teach us, how they were made and the clothes they wore, made from Caribou, or either seal skins. I'm "more of a spoiled sort," though old, I didn't "catch up," to their ways of living, but "caught up" with the need to eat what they instilled amongst us. I don't know how they did it, thus far, I myself, am amazed about my ancestors, the way they used tools for hunting, for survival. The actors here, their descendants are now into fifth generation.
Wow. I’m an old anthropologist who always wanted to go to the Arctic but never did. Didn’t study Arctic cultures formally - I’m an urbanist - but am interested! Thanks so much for sharing that w all of us.
What a stunning film! I'm beginning to explore the Inuit way of life as I think we need to relearn how to treat the earth and its resources if we are going to survive. This holds valuable lessons.
A world where night and day, fire and ice, intimacy and vastness, natural beauty and human art, life and death are starkly woven. A world refreshing and beautiful to those who respond to it.
Truly stunning! So simple, yet so complete. Are we happiest when living so close to the land? Imagine spending long winter's with your family, day in, day out for months and months. Everyone necessary. I feel like we are a people who've lost their way. Beautiful film. Thank you.
i am so happy to have found this gem.
Delightful. A gentle and resourceful people.
That's why I say..complain about life people try living like this..search of food everyday no education.. I'm proud of these people...
It is wonderful. It was made just before I was born and had the English accent in the narration that was so much a part of its time. I see they had a sewing machine and awful tobacco which we Westerners polluted them with and the accordian for the dancing. I wonder if they still lived in the igloos in 1958 and wore those clothes - in other words what was staged and what was not - I hope not much. It looks genuine. They seemed to have a 4 children over 15 years so about 1 every 4 years or so.
No. These were just acting. The "couple," are not married, they each have a family of their own, both had children, all close in age and a large family, to boot.
The woman, real named used, Kooyoo, was my uncle's wife, my mom's brother, is not shown here.
High quality production for that time period and very informative.
I love that story
I love how they measure the passage of the years by the number of winters
so much love for the Innuit people ❤
Fascinating to see the assortment and use of the carving tools in this vid. Also, recently I made my own qulliq oil lamp from a small oblong ceramic planter and used a strip of rolled cotton and olive oil from the dollar store for the fuel. Worked great. Many thanks.
Beautiful movie on a beautiful and strong people.
Such an incredibly moving film , I love it !
This is a wonderful film - the BEST I have seen of Inuit daily life and culture. I have full
respect for this race of peoples and Ienvy them their simplicity. They are master craftspeople
and everything in their lives is forged and crafted by hand. We have a "soft" bunch compared
to them. Their lives depend on what their hands can fashion. Brilliant doco. Thanks John Feeney
for your wonderful work! :-)
Totally agree Mary. I'm fortunate enough to have the time to carve for myself, wood not stone, and it changes the way you think about the world!
agreed, everything they posess they made themselves in a way. Something worth living by I think. But simple? I don't know. Certainly not easier.
very greatful to just be able to watch this experience ,true family true friends true life !!!

I was fortunate enough to stumble across a Cape Dorset print by Ningeeuga that I love. It could be that all art is totem. Bless you.

In their struggle, happiness comes to them..in our comfort and pursuit of material things(greed) happiness evades us.
I have a walrus stone carving from the North West Territories that I would like to return to its home.
The narrator sounds like John Neumann from ONE STEP BEYOND. He's putting on an accent.
Ótimo Filme , muito bom .
31:37 shes sooo cute :)
strangely no listing in the credits? sounds a lot like vicent price on the narration
"The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season. You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing." Psalm 145:15,16

Todos los ceres humanos tenemos esa capacidad de adaptarnos a cualquier clima

Even those that live in desolate and isolated lands knows there is SOMETHING out there more POWERFUL and MIGHTY than life itself. These people however, know what our society has forgotten and life's worth. I for one is one of the same.
In youth I was ignorant to the fact how my choices would impact my future and change what could have been. AND MY CHOICES DID JUST THAT!!!!!!
I GIVE ALL MY LOVE AND GLORY TO THAT SOMEONE OUT THERE, WHO KNEW MY NAME AND REMEMBERED ME THROUGH IT ALL. FORGAVE ME OF ALL MY TRANSGRESSIONS AND THROUGH HIS WORD SHOWED ME THE PATH LEADING TO HIM. THIS SOMEONE OUT THERE HAS A NAME.
IN PSALMS 83:18, IT IS WRITTEN; THAT MEN MAY KNOW THAT THOU, WHOSE NAME ALONE IS JEHOVAH, ART THE MOST HIGH OVER ALL THE EARTH.
HE SET HIS FACE ON MEN, BECAUSE THEY WERE OF EVIL, AND YET NOT ONE DID RIGHT IN HIS EYES. AND SO JEHOVAH'S PLAN WAS TO SEND HIS BELOVED SON TO REDEEM MANKIND. TO BRING ABOUT REDEMPTION LIKE NO OTHER. HE HAS A NAME ALSO.
IN MATTHEW 1: 23, IT IS WRITTEN; BEHOLD, A VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD, AND BRING FORTH A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME "" EMMANUEL"", WHICH BEING INTERPRETED IS GOD IS WITH US. THEN , IN MATTHEW 1: 24, IT IS WRITTEN; THEN JOSEPH BEING RAISED FROM SLEEP DID AS THE ANGEL OF THE LORD HAD BIDDEN HIM AND TOOK TO HIM HIS WIFE: THEN IN MATTHEW 1:25 , IT IS WRITTEN: AND KNEW HER NOT TILL SHE HAD BROUGHT FORTH HER FIRSTBORN SON: AND HE CALLED HIS NAME JESUS.
AFTER JESUS FINISHED THE WORK AND MINISTRY JEHOVAH GAVE HIM TO DO, THE TIME CAME TO RETURN TO THE FATHER JEHOVAH. BEFORE LEAVING THE EARTH HE PROMISED TO SEND THE HOLY SPIRIT TO EMPOWER HIS PEOPLE TO CARRY ON THE TRUTH AND GOSPEL TO ALL CORNERS OF THE EARTH.
IN ACTS1:8, IT IS WRITTEN: BUT YOU SHALL RECEIVE POWER, AFTER THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT IS COME UPON YOU: AND YOU SHALL BE WITNESSES UNTO ME BOTH IN JERUSALEM, AND IN ALL JUDAEA, AND IN SAMARIA AND UNTO THE UTTERMOST PART OF THE EARTH.
AND THIS SO WAS FULFILLED AT PENTECOST!!!!!!! ACTS 2:1-4. IT IS WRITTEN
FATHER, JEHOVAH; SON JESUS; AND THE HOLY SPIRIT. ALL IN UNISON AS ONE WHO IS ALIVE KEEPING WATCH OVER YOU AND I....... GOD BLESS
The narrartor's voice seems so familiar to me, but the name George Whalley doesn't ring a bell and he doesn't seem to have a very extensive catalogue of work on IMDB.
go to $ dollar store, & buy something, not from e-bay.
those carving, should be made by thru- storys from long ago, & to used them as they grow older to servives from foods. b-4 whites man rules over. I'd like to carve 1 day like this. by storys made. it can help for those understands hard way in cold.
كاش حلو يخبل
20:34 he says they carve for the tall white.. ket luna? men? What is the ketluna word he uses?
That's mean... fuck you bitch😛😛
White man, often spelled Kabloona. Also title of GREAT book by Gontran de Poncins
Just so one could pronounce the word properly, "Hallunaa." "Q." or "K."-is what was put into Syllables.
Some kind of soapstone they've found?
They do work in soapstone now, but there is a Green stone they use as well as Ivory, which they are allowed to carve. Green stone is also found in New Zealand and carved by Maori artisans.
Inuits gave us a new perspective. We gave them cigarettes.
and cell phones, transistor radios etc etc etc
🌬💋❤️🌀♨️🌞🌙🙏☝️
maybe in the future this peaple will survive in the incoming war of greedy powerfull nation
They all are dead now...bitch😛😛😛😛😛

from my experience the Inuit closest and maybe only relatives inn North America are the Apache and Lipanes of SW USA into Chihuahua, and they all originated from Japan
Wahahahah!
Asians of the arctic/americas !!!!!
They are the same as Korean's ! 🖖💫
Je ne sais si la civilisation occidentale a fait plus de tort que de bien aux Inuit ?..
Comment passer de l'âge de la pierre au monde moderne, en si peu de temps, sans y laisser des plumes et son âme ?!! Soupir.....😢
he look like elon muk.
Obviously Chinese is true Americans and, Canadians,Europeans can stop lying.
It works wonderfully for the seperation of socities yet also, in some, can serve as power. While it true what you say, could you live this way?? Only the strongest could survive this way..
That carving tho hella skills..shit ..
fuck you stink ass.
Devil is so clever in many ways
Pourquoi ?.
They look asians
Eskimos are descendants of Asia, having come across the ancient land bridge that once connected Russia to North America.
Claytpn Palmer Eskimos are from Far North-East Russia I think. At least their ancestors came from there.
Even their language still relate to Siberian Yupik.
Robertjr Cinco they are closely related to a small Japanese tribe based on their DNA.
yep, almost like late bruce lee.
I want to make music to the people
This is poorly edited and the narrator is the type of person who would fetishize a culture and not say anything that might offend other people that also fetishize other cultures.
