Learn about traditional Inuit culture from this fascinating series. This series documents cultural practices, skills, and values in Nunavut in northern Canada. Each episode focuses on a different topic, and does a good job of celebrating the skills and resourcefulness of the Inuit.
The territory of the Inuit (also called Eskimo, Inupiaq, Yupik, and other regional names) cover the northern and western regions of Alaska, northern Canada, and Greenland. The Inuit continue to live in these areas and maintain many cultural traditions while also incorporating some modern technology into their culture as well. Inuit continue to have a deep respect and spiritual connection with the land and its resources.
The Tuktu documentary series was produced by the National Film Board of Canada between 1966 and 1968.

The way they describe the seal hunt as being a form of communion with the animal itself is really beautiful
Exactly. And the commercial hunters tell us they hunt Not for furr but to protect the seals from overpopulation. Two beatifull ways to kill the seals.
It's not just that, it's practical. If you squint your eyes while watching the part when he tries to look like a seal on the ice to approach the real seal (which has poor vision), stunningly his silhouette looks exactly like an animated seal !
What you eat gives you life. Inuit know that very well, to thank for the life they took, for saving them.

I wish I could have meet this man face to face to show the respect I have for the hardships he’s been through. The worst day Of my life was probably just a Tuesday for him.
These people go through hardships each day yet they are a happy people. Through their lifes experience they know everything they need is provided from the frozen land they inhabit. An amazing people indeed.

Try the Siberian peoples of the Russian Arctic. They were similar. The Eskimos themselves came from Siberia a couple thousand years ago. In the middle ages some were still crossing

Jazzy, those Kalahari Bushmen are amazing people. I have watched a few Documentaries about them.
Johan, that couldn't be more far from the truth. If you reflect on the whole series, the Inuit had tons of knowledge and hunted every animal on the ice and in the frigid waters in many different ways. They were generalists of the cold latitudes. Some other people living in hot climate may be more specialized to fishing only. So no they were not specialized but exploited every possible way of survival in their climate.
Binge watching in 2021..I remember watching this series in social studies at Cincinnati Country Day School in the early 70's. I went on to major in anthropology primary because of this presentation. #GoBlue
That is amazing and i can entirely see why. This serie is a precious treasure. It could never be filmed again with the warmth and smile of several generations on camera and the unbelievable skills they possessed. I am going to cry when i finish watching it because this is as precious and beautiful as it gets.
Those who appreciate other cultures, with the recognition that this is one universe and we are mortal beings.

I love polytheist. There is a god for everything in the nature.
All these things aren't beliefs they're survival necessities. They help the hunt, help finding a mind disposition to guide the hand for the hunt or with the frustration of a missed hunt. As we all know a man can be his own worst enemy and those thoughts are necessary to self manage and keep the hope that keeps us alive. They're not beliefs they're acting real part of life. Indigenous people understood this well and it made a real difference.

It's amazing to see how despite living in such a harsh environment. They still practices hospitality to friends and strangers. It's the strong bond of family and friends that helps these incredibles people survives and thrives in these most hospitable places on Earth.

I think that's what helped ensure their survival. Today I am a great hunter, but tomorrow I won't be. So today I take care of everyone else, and tomorrow they'll take care of me.

Incredible. Wonderful to see families working together surrounded by resources. You don’t see that today because the land was intentionally stripped to make people dependent just to take that capability and skill away from the home to capitalize.

Perfectly natural, this is the human life each one of our distant ancestors lived for sure, for hundreds of thousands year, and they had to be as intelligent as we are now. You can see how cunning, intelligent and smart you have to be to survive. Everything is in its purest form including relation between father and son. Of all the people i would respect the most, at the very top above anyone else i would put these Inuit people because their life represented the essence of a most difficult but yet happy life on this planet.

I understand Alaska has their own North West Natives that live in cold Environments but this Film was Filmed and Produced by Canadians in Canada about Canadian Eskimos and about their Seal Hunting. It looks to me as if your giving more credit to Alaska then whats due.

Seals dont have good eye sight when on land so it makes sense that he was able to get close to the seal.
@@trulyidkman seal has good eye sight. the hunter could get near it because he pretended to be a seal himself and the seal got tricked. try walking straight to the seal, u won't get near 100meter near them.
@@trulyidkman seals normally flee into the sea at any little movement. Might not be good eyesight compared to humans. But you have to be VERY careful trying to get close to them. They have great hearing and smell. He even says you have to make sure you are down wind so they don't smell you.

seals have to surface every 30-40 min to breathe. The dogs can sniff which hole has been recently used.

Eskimos get their vitamin c from eating oranges. They don’t eat raw seal, only fish and whales they eat raw.

@Tf Is Yu they cook the meat as well. They eat it raw at first when it is fresh but then they cook the meat to preserve it.

That's because authorities are telling people how they can live and what they can do. And all the doo gooders greenies that have no idea how to live of the land telling people it cruel and unatrual to hunt and gather your own meat food. And if you do they belittle people that do and call them mental. they seem to think we all should buy processed food with no goodness from shop's. This should be incouraged for people live on the natural foods where these people live. Certain people in the world have truly lost all sense of reality. And it always people in power that create these stupid law's. Never lived a day in there lives off the land. And have no idea how nature works.

Neat eh, they are called Iggaaq. Inuit from around the world have made them for many centuries. The idea of sun glasses came from the iggaaq.
I wonder what the average life expectancy was for the Inuit? Their diet and lifestyle, how did it effect their lifespan?
They used to live for a very old age and healthy. Same as the Japanese. Whale, seal, and bear meat is very good for us. And has nearly every vitamin and minerals in it.
In my culture, our elders live up to 90-100. But with the modernization and everything, that number will probably drop. Western Alaska, next to the Bering Sea.
Processed foods sadly reduced many Natives' lifespans. Diabetes is very common now.

@@stefanmarkusuebele1007 vegetarianism against cruelty is great, vegetarianism against carnivores is at odd with the natural world. Let's face it evolution is about killing to eat. Eskimos are kind people and like all indigenous people they have respect for animals, their hunting is not "game" like the anglos, it's livelihood. There is no vegetation to eat in this ice. Eating animals is what our body evolved to do and other things. The seal themselves eat live fishes. I do have a problem with cruelty and 'game' hunters but not this.
I have a question for anyone who knows:
Seal oil is extracted by boiling the fat.
But is there another way to get it?
It seems like a bit of a paradox if you want to get the oil to make the heat/fire in the first place. Surely you would use all your oil up, extracting oil if that is the only way to get it...
Or can a small amount of oil/heat extract a lot more? Meaning you just need to save a little for the next batch...
And what if you run out and need to get some more from scratch and there is no drift wood to create a flame?
I wondered if pressing or fermenting would produce burnable oil.
If it is anything like tallow a small amount could render quite a lot. Even lard from pigs can get a good burn going and it does not take much heat to render fat. You just want it melted not burnt. Not sure about fermenting but I am pretty sure pressing would not work on animal fats.
As much as I remember, you get seal oil by putting the seal fat inside a bucket. You stir it every so often. But after a while, it'll eventually end up with that stuff you love. Yum 😋😋
Seal fat will "melt" at room temperature, it doesn't take much for it to turn to oil, that is the beauty of seal fat.

Try seal meat. It's lean, full of flavor. Almost like beef jerky but not dried out. It tastes amazing with seal oil (basically the fat juice) and salt. Dude. You're missing out.
