one of my favorite parts of this movie is the rock. if you notice, it floats when the house floods, which means it's fake, it's hollow. which is a great bit of symbolism; the rock his rich friend gives him to bring him wealth is hollow. how funny is that. but that's also why the rock doesn't kill him when he gets brained with it. it's not heavy enough. and then, my favorite bit. in the final scenes talking about Kevin's impossible plan, the rock sinks. it's imagined, the whole thing is a wish. he wishes he could earn enough to save his family, and buy that house. he wishes the lucky rock was really lucky. it's such an awesome symbol that puts in so much work.

The director Bong Joon Ho usually tells stories that have themes of climate change and class. Sadly Seoul, South Korea just had the worst flooding they've had in 100 years and 4 people died in underground apartments like the one the poor family have in this movie. Bong said Parasite shows how poor people often step on other poor people to survive instead of all poor people coming together to fight the systems that keep them in poverty. I think this movie is a masterpiece. There is also a black and white version which is a very different experience. You might also like his films Snowpiercer or Memory of a Murder.

I feel like Parasite refers to multiple things in the movie. The poor family were parasites but the house was also a parasite. The rich family is also a parasite. Bong Joon Ho is a genius director and I respect him a lot for also breaking that barrier and winning many awards for a Korean film it's pretty ground breaking. I love watching people react to Parasite because it's such a ride from beginning to end. I really enjoyed this

The father talking about "having no plan" is a very real reality of people stuck in generational poverty. You're in so deep that making a plan can feel like false hope or something leading to another failed endeavor that will set you down even deeper. Some people just accept the material conditions they lay in because hoping for more can be too painful.

Yessss! It deserved the Oscar for sure. This movie was just bananas. Korean cinema is incredible. I know you watched Train to Busan so you know they absolutely rule over the zombie genre, but their k-dramas and thrillers and everything are just SO GOOD. I recommend the series Kingdom, which is about feudal Korea and zombies, and also All of Us Are Dead, which is about a zombie infestation at a private high school. What's Wrong With Secretary Kim is a great comedy/romance series, too, if your tastes ever swing that way.

So much to say about this movie! The commentary on social classes, the casual statements and actions that hit differently with the context ("That rain was such a blessing"), the directing and the beautiful shots (they emphasized going up and down stairs a lot), and of course just the execution of the plot. I think Bong Joon Ho confirmed that it would have taken Kevin like 500+ years to afford the house, which is sad but such is reality. Amazing movie, and I'm glad you guys liked it too!

The most sad thing about the whole family infiltrating the rich is that they COULD. All of them do their jobs just fine. The son managed to captivate the rich daughter and mother while also actually teaching well. The daughter managed to control the kid. The father drives exceptionally well. And the mother cleans the house, cooks and executes orders perfectly as well.
If they weren't good at their jobs they literally wouldn't have made it that far.
But that's exactly it. They normally wouldn't be able to get those high paying jobs just because they're poor. It's not for a lack of skill or talent.
And that's exactly how our world works. It's all about expensive education but what if you can't afford it? That doesn't mean you're any less fit for the job.

As a kdrama and kmovies fan, it's sad because I've been watching him since 2010, i was 12 during that time watching his drama Pasta (my first kdrama ever). I just hope that the people will treat other people better with a little humanity because we don't know that a person who faces the judgement and mistreatment will able to handle it. It is such a cruel world, and i just hope he will finally find his peace. Thank you, Lee Sun Kyun for your masterpiece acting.

Something I love about this movie is just the infinite layers of detail.
As you're watching the second half of the movie you keep wondering how they don't get spotted right? The daughter under the table, the son under the bed, then the family under the table and the father on the floor. They're right there. But that's the exactly like the rich being thankful for the rain while the poor got flooded, lost their possessions and even life's.
In south Korea the rich are LITERALLY above the poor as it's full of mountains. They're on top. And they don't even look down. They don't need to and don't want to.
That's why the family doesn't get found out. The rich do not recognize the struggles of the poor as they only look up at the sun.

This movie is insane on so many levels. It really shows just how far apart the classes are and how it's basically impossible to escape if you don't become a parasite. Poor parents have kids who then eventually become poor parents themselves. They can't get the right education because it's too expensive and thus can't aquire jobs that pay better. So you just can't climb out of it. And instead of the poor helping the poor they instead fight eachother in hopes of reaching a better life. Forgetting who or what the real problem is.
I think the poor family is very fascinating. What I expected at the beginning is that the siblings would infiltrate the rich family and thus gain a lot of money. But I also thought that they might grow apart from the parents. That they would get in over their heads and forget about them. But no, even when they're all staying in this massive house, they still all sit together closely in the living room. They truly love each other.
And that makes everything even more heartbreaking.
The entire run of the first half I was just thinking "why don't they just put the money they don't need aside to save up for better education or a better living space? Why do they all infiltrate the family instead of just the siblings?" but it's easy. They got greedy. And I can't blame them for it. They've been living a horrible life, half underground. And now they were finally touched by the sun. It's addictive. And it's blinding.
That's why the mom was about to call the police. She forgot where they came from. Or rather she tried to forget.
It's just truly so so heartbreaking.
And in the end the son would need to work for over 500 years to ever be able to buy the house (inflation not counted). Because the gap is just too big.
It's insane how this isn't unrealistic or like an apocalyptic world. This is OUR world. Even the flooding happened. 4 people died in their semi basement Appartements while the rich barely even noticed as they are LITERALLY above everyone else.
How is it 2023 and we still can't fix humanity? Global warming is enough of a struggle in my opinion, why do we keep making up new problems just so few can live in bliss?

And the rich guy was talking with manner until the son's birthday party was into mess... He was yelling and calling Mr. Kim for the car key without proper manner (like talking to younger) and that provoked Mr.Kim (the driver) as well....

COMPLETELY different from Parasite, but I would love to see you all react to A Silent Voice. You will feel every emotion you could possibly feel in a movie, and that is all I will say. It's Japanese, but there is an English dubbed version if you don't want to read subtitles.
SPOILER FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN PARASITE MOVIE:
The director stated it would take approximately 564 years for Ki-woo to earn enough money to purchase the house.

the idea that you can get rich and successful starting from nothing is highly american/western... and frankly it doesn't hold true in america today. the whole point is the inequality is entrenched in s.korea. smart, talented poor people still get nowhere. they are not privy to tutors, psychologists, safe housing, maids/nannies, a parent at home or education that is paid for. the rich pay the poor as servants and leave them fighting over scraps while looking down on them as if the system had nothing to do with either of their positions. if you rewatch the movie with a s.korean's lens, you'll see the theme that's present in a lot of bjh's movies.

    • @bura19
      @bura19 Год назад

It is largely a western concept, because upward mobility is comparatively more accessible in most western nations. That's not to say it's by any means easy, or ALWAYS achievable, but if you compare it to places with generational destitution (much of Asia, Africa, etc.), there is a measurable difference.

    • @foxpaw1
      @foxpaw1 Год назад

@@bura19 sure. my point was that it is becoming increasingly unobtainable here. the more influence and access by corporations and the well-heeled invested in them to politicians/govt, the less that mobility becomes reality. the very thought that the fed is intent on raising interest rates to stem wages/income of employees so that corporate earnings can get back to a certain level is damning of the system as a whole. this country will regress to the time of the robber barons without vigilance. people easily forget our own history

Others have said the same regarding the ending. He'll have to succeed big time to get that kind of money. But many people have such goals right? Working hard and making it big. Building wealth from your own sweat and determination. Finally providing for your family what they could never have. And maybe he'll luck out and be one of the few hundred that succeed. Or, he'll be like the millions in an economy with next to no upwards mobility and stay in the basement. But hey, we can dream right?

It's 18 months or 16 months now. Even it's shorter than before, this age is the most sparkling time in a life.
For university, army, studying abroad and age system we have older age like 20 yrs old when 18 yrs old in US, men can start to work when they are 28 yrs old in Korean age.
So it's hard to marry on time with saving enough money. It made our birth rate 0.59 in Seoul.
The Nation gives so many things for new babies. But too expensive housing, private education fees.
We feel our kids can be lower than them having good education and houses in future.

Depends on what tone the film is going for, in my experience. Some Hollywood films portray it accurately. Also, poverty doesn't look the same everywhere. Poverty in the US doesn't necessary look the same as poverty in Korea.

You have to be careful with Korean cinema, because there is definitely a tipping point involved.
Once you watch a certain amount of it, you suddenly realize you've spent your entire life up to that point watching really terrible films.
And your tolerance for the typical dreck that Hollywood churns put goes WAY down.
