Made a map for my party a couple of days ago. I used the first style for it, it just fit for it, because i wanted that sketchy look. (The map was sketched by another adventuring NPC) I gotta say, for future maps i'll probably go for the third style. I like that one a lot.
I just want to give a quick thank you for all of these videos! I have watched a whole bunch of them because I just got into cartography. I am a writer and Dungeon Master and I recently decided I want to physically put my worlds on paper, but I'm not all the good at art. Your videos have been a massive help for me and I have been testing so many of the different things you have shown. The best job I did was with tree style number 3.
These videos have been just great! You've demonstrated a lot of techniques, that I would never have thought of on my own. Thanks so much for all your hard work making these videos.
I've learned a lot from your channel and I honestly believe that my world building skills have increased quite a lot :D Personally, I've always used the style number 3 because it is the best mix of detail and effort. So faster than all the individual styles but prettier than the "cloudy" ones. Although, I mostly do large scale maps so I feel it fits there the best.
No top-down view forest? Mike Schley, the cartogtapher for the WotC D&D books does his maps from a top-down view and his forests are quite beautiful to lool at. I’ve drawn inspiration from that and tried replicating it myself. I’d suggest to give his maps a look and try it out for yourself! Great video, super helpful and practical. Forests often do tend to be tricky to nail just right. Keep the ink flowing!
Thank you, i will use a mix of all your shown options for my fantasy map to bring in some individual styles, which also fit in the temperature zones of the world.
can't get enough of this map making vids. Thanks Nate! Definitely going to give the seventh one a try, don't think I've seen it out there on other maps. Also, could you do one on houses and other architecture stuff and also water, rivers, etc; waterfalls would be cool. Saludos desde Puerto Rico.
Late on this one, but I only recently discovered your channel (spoiler - I love it!). Dude, that mountain was perfect with this brush pen... I really need to pull my shit together and start creating my own maps for TTRPG sessions etc.
Made a map for a literature project where we had to make a narrative universe or a mythology and make a Hero’s Journey type story. These videos helped a lot
Nate, could you do a similar video on mountains, please? I'm drawing a map at the moment and the mountains are definitely the weak spot. Loved the video, it has definitely helped with what style I'll use for the map (3, and possibly some 4). Thanks :)
The best style is the ridge style. Just one continuous line in erratic form, somewhat jagged and pointed in places where you can then make the peaks. Ben/Questing Beast has a 'how to draw mountains' vid where he shows a fair number of styles. Have it branch off in places too. More geographically correct that way.
Sakura pens are really nice, really pretty, I’m going to have to buy more, since I thought it would be a good idea to bring them to school... And now I only have about 2 or 3 left
Nate, my dude, what do you mean? That brush pen worked great for drawing the mountain like that, it gave it sort of an Oriental feel. I think you should consider using that pen if you ever need to draw mountains in Fantasy Japan (tm)
It absolutely did give me a Japanese vibe. You're right. Just not what I intended and new and uncomfortable for me. :) But it could definitely be cool.
How could I possibly make a barren forest or jungle forest? More of a tree without leaves look/ palm tree, tropical tree. Or even a coral reef, if I were to make an underwater fantasy map. I think that look would be interesting, but I'm not really sure how to achieve it, any suggestions? Thanks.
What about the ridge style[kinda I mean]? It's hard to explain. And another where it is so far away you can't even see the trunks. I can do both of those, because they are my favourite, less time consuming, are much more logical and geographic, and nice looking. [I guess]. I say this because I prefer the ridge style of mountains. Ben/Questing Beast gave the inspiration.
Thanks you a lot. I'm a dugeon master, and i like to create by myself the things for the game. That's hard, especially the world map is one of the toughest things for me because I'm bad at drawin/painting/etc. However, with your videos, i make somme realy improovement and you make me want to draw ; So Thanks you a lot. PS: I'm learning english, i hope there are no mistakes, if there are, can someone please correct me? thanks you (:
Paulo Haruo Lots of things. Dunes, Texture, Dungeons, Oases, if there is a protected area by mountains in your desert, those are the best places to have a settlement or two, of course very spread out, Monster Dens, areas where a huge desert beast patrols etc.
You might consider not actually doing a desert map. Just show them a picture of a desert, then give them a blank piece of paper and write down the locations they come across / add an icon for interesting location - just so they get an idea of where stuff is relative to each other. Mapping a desert is going to be difficult anyways.
I have a dilemma, I can do the ones on the top row but they don't really work with my map ( in my opinion ) but the ones i do like on the bottom i can't do very well :(
@@kosm866 I have a variety of drawing paper. I don't really pay any attention to grade, tbh. I just buy stuff. :) Like this: amzn.to/2H9CrC1 I'm not very discriminating though. I've even drawn some on standard printer paper.
>oh wow the brush pen does not work well for mountains.
>meanwhile I’m here drooling over how good that mountain looks
Please make a tutorial about highlands and plateaus with great cliffs. I really like your styles, they make map kaking more fun.
I could see these all on one map, with each tree reflecting the culture or rumors surrounding those places.
For the last two weeks of school I started a D&D group during my lunch period. This game and all your videos are great.

Good video by the way! Very informative and helpful.
Thank you,you make it look so easy....

This brush pen is not good for drawing mountains. *draws perfect mountain*
I thought that same thing!
HAHAHAHAHA. I was going to say the same thing.
me too!
"This brush pen isn't really good for making mountains" that mountain looked so freakin cool! Probably the best looking part on that paper..
I search for the greatest tree method EVER
I watch the whole video for the best forest drawing
*Goes with the first one*
You looked at all the possibilities and made your choice
ryanmazdaLAX well analyzed

5 is definitely my style. Makeing them ground shadows is a good idea and will help improve.
1 and 6 are in my corner. Thank you for your time.

Hooray for another map making vid! Always love these videos :)
:)
16:02 "This brush pen is not great for drawing mountains."
It gives it a very Chinese feel.
Haha yeah
I've been struggling with forests. Thank you so very much for this video! :) (I've tried 1 and I'll try doing it again, or do 3 or 4)
I love those trees, I can't remember the last time I saw hand drawn trees like that!: )

Great! Thanks for the comment.
That sounds excellent

Great. Definitely can do mountains next.
Thanks :)
I f***ing suck at mountains too. :(

I seem completely unable to get them satisfactory, though :) I probably just need to practise.
number one is still da best. When Nate says "you will see me very soon" he means you will see me in 8 days.
Sakura pens are really nice, really pretty, I’m going to have to buy more, since I thought it would be a good idea to bring them to school...

Some nice, little happy trees here
Happy little trees :D good one!
Thanks a lot for your work you put into there tutorials! It's great to listen to you and learn :D Keep up, good job m8! :D
Thanks!
Happy little trees
That #7 looks quite neat
The brush pen mountain was actually pretty cool looking. Had that eastern Asian painting type of feel (idk the name).

I like numer 3. It's nice and easy.
5 and 6 are my best choice :)
You’re the best! Thanks for another great video :)
i like number 3 works best and is amazing
Now that you mention it, Deven Rue did the world maps for Critical Role and they are absolutely stunning.
I love this pen
I liked this drawing
Fabulous. Thanks!
A little sad that you didnt draw a friend for the trees..everyone needs a friend :D
1, 2, 5, 6. Dunno why, but I love them
Could you make a video about drawing a great wall or big fortresses?
Cool video!
Nate, thank you for your videos, its great! We’ll create our worlds)
Could you tell, whats the name of background music that played all the time?
Is there a unique way to do a tropical forest
You should go over settlements next
at 4:25 you show another map that has darker oceans is this something you recommend, shading the oceansM
these videos are awesome
so how would you draw a bamboo forest in style 5 or 6?
Would you know how to make a palm grove, or a forest of palm trees?
I really like to know how to do it
do one on mountains
Will do.
WASD20 I know it'll be different to normal, but.. Sci-Fi maps?

Great video,
With color maps #1 is best
Square trees
*laughs in minecraft*
1000th like! Who else is going to use these in there maps?
Honestly that first one looks like a flat top mesa than a forest.
How can I make a desert map not boring? I'm really struggling with that

I have a dilemma, I can do the ones on the top row but they don't really work with my map ( in my opinion ) but the ones i do like on the bottom i can't do very well :(
Love style 5
What grade paper do you use?
Not sure off the top my head. Just a standard sketchpad.
@@WASD20 Oh ok thanks, is that what you use on commissioned pieces as well?

palm trees are easy to draw!
1 and 5
I was hoping to find at least one method with 'birds eye' view
i got size 5>.
number 7 looks like a burned forest
heh, square trees...
your bad example looks like a plateau
when you realize that you should stop just coloring it green
Is it me or is it that one and 2 look like a mountain
So tiny
Plz give me free micron pen because I'm a 9 year old kid
Happy little trees
