Dang, this is a sick channel! I have done most of my world maps on my PC already using stuff like GIMP and Inkscape, but I figure having a few handmade maps to go along with them would be pretty cool. And I don't have to worry about accuracy TOO much because medieval maps were a little crude to begin with. :D
How I tend to draw deserts, is using long wavy lines sparingly in the large wasteland area. Other things I add are cacti, and this too is sparingly. But these textures are amazing. The only one I actually knew about is the first example you drew, and my favourite is your third example. Awesome. I might just show my map for my story as a video and leave you a link. Though the map is very large, using three A2 sheets of art paper. Unfinished of course, but I have all the locations of the towns and cities. The map is for my Moonlight Shadow story.
Can you do snow/Ice and frozen lakes/streams next? I'm currently working on a northern section of a world map and would like to show that the north pole area is froze over.
is there a way to draw "scarred terrain?" im setting up a map for a world where a catastrophe caused a large section of land to essentially become barren wasteland where no life has returned.
If the more elaborate mountain ranges are giving you trouble, keep it simple. Just use inverted V shapes. They look fine if you add a little detail. I have some videos on it.
Hi Questing Beast! I'm in the process of drawing a fantaysy map for my book and as I'm not a great expert in drawing, though I am getting significantly better, your tutorials on how to draw mountains and forests and lakes and rivers have been very helpful. I was wondering if you could do a part two for drawing deserts and video on how to draw plains, fields on a fantasy map. I've been trying to find tutorials for this for quite a while now and I've looked at fantasy maps such as Jordan's Wheel of Time and Middle-Earth but I cant find a style that pleases me. Also, do you think you could try doing a tutorial on how to create town and city icons like Tolkien did with Osgiliath or Minas Tirith? That would be great, thanks and let me know if you can do these things.

One thing for deserts that I know I have trouble with is drawing things like canyons in deserts
Good thing I found this. I am drawing a desert map at the moment.
i wish id found this earlier! ive already finished all my deserts and i wanted an arid, sandless one. I just added dunes to make it look deserty
Amazing. Thank you. 👍🏼

What size and type of paper do you use?
That's just normal printer paper.
What about for your maps?
I usually use cardstock or posterboard.
Thanks!
