      Sadly it's only just a really good halberd at lower to mid levels, unless you're also a spellblade or mage at higher levels.
      It's R2 jumping attack is... really not great, and is sure to get you backstabbed

    I'm surprised you don't have more views on this and you really got a good take on ds1 pvp. as a ds1/remastered pvp main, it's good to hear someone not constantly complaining about backstabs

    • @RofoTheGyrm
      @RofoTheGyrm  Год назад +1

      Thank you! I think people don't want to play anything that isn't Elden Ring related at the moment so even past souls games don't get very good views haha.
      I will say I get people complaining about backstabs, but I'm also very open to new styles of play. There is something VERY attractive about the slower and very tactical side of DS1 PVP that I absolutely loved, even if I didn't totally understand what was happening on screen at all times. Wish people would give it more of a try, because I still maintain that it's the only game that got passive poise right.

    DS1 PvP is a fun romp, I still have such fond memories of messing around and getting stomped by skilled players in 2016 when I started. Everything was so foreign and interesting, I wanted nothing more than to learn. And everything seemed designed to encourage that experimentation with PvP.
    I still think solo host invasions have an important role in our history and they lend themselves to a more creative and unexpected style of PvP that kinda gets left by the wayside when invasions are solely defined by the rule of 1 vs Multiples. That said, times change, communities change, and I don’t really know if solo host invasions make sense anymore when these games aren’t balanced to the preference of either invaders or hosts. In the past I had faith that invaders would at least be interesting encounters for solo hosts, but the creeping of esports mentality into Souls PvP has pushed away most thoughts of roleplay, social experimentation, or casual fights.
    The invasion system is SO many things, but invaders often are not. And that’s a shame. I don’t think it’s a lost cause necessarily, but I do get why No Solo Host invasions is the closest From can get to appealing to the majority opinion.
    They’re a big household name now - they’re no longer the same kind of weird quirky mavericks who made janky masterpieces like DeS, DS1, or hell even DS2. BB really changed everything for them. They’ve got a drive for polish and focus now, one that pushes quality games like no other studio, and yet leaves a lot of their design history behind imo. That’s a creative space other studios may be able to fill, but in the meantime, we’ll always have Lordran.

      As to your last point, something Scott Jund said the other day kinda stuck with me. Fromsoft is too big and too well regarded of a studio to still have this much jank in their PVP and I kinda agree.
      Especially with how a lot of movement and especially inputs have regressed from DS3, I'm starting to agree more and more with Scott that there's some pretty basic stuff that Fromsoft should be addressing but just doesn't when making the multiplayer side of their games.

    You forgot to mention two things in ds1 poise formula - kicks and backstabs but you did mention slow pace tho. Kick is a guarantee poise break in ds1 and a free bs potentially, if your opponent doesn't know how to counter that, but if he does tho it becomes a 50/50 game where you need to predict your opponent action to counter his counter etc.

    • @RofoTheGyrm
      @RofoTheGyrm  Год назад

      Kicking was definitely something that I got the hang of right as the event was ending. I liked that you could always kick with a weapon in your hand, don't love that they reduced it to an Ash of War in Elden Ring

      @@RofoTheGyrm To be fair, accidentally kicking in ds3 was the absolute worst.

    DS1 pvp is the definition of PTSD for me. After all these years and 1500+ hours, I can still get deleted under 7 seconds at meta. It's not that I don't know intricate mechanics of it but the moment I try to put the knowledge to use, memories of PTDE pvp kick in ahahah. I've got used to it though, makes the game still fresh after all these years for the reasons you also mentioned. There's always good to fair chance that I'll be annihilated. Still my favorite game of all time.
    As for poise, you're completely right. The speed of ER cannot handle passive poise to that extent. Still, I ended up hating the staggerfest of DS3 during its last cycle that I'd still choose passive poise if I just had to make a choice. Or maybe I wouldn't, I don't know. Maybe I was just way too burned out with DS3 but I'd hoped ER would find a nice balance where anything heavier than a straight sword would always stagger you but a quickstep dagger wouldn't whether you're attacking or not given you have high poise of course. Busted ash of war system made it near impossible to have a proper poise/hyper armor balance.
    Souls formula is getting rather old, so hope the next game will take a lot more risks mechanics wise than ER did so I hope the next one we get will be more like Bloodborne with 30 distinct weapons any a hyper armor system not really dependent on armor. I love hybrid builds and viable caster options in ER but FROM is nowhere near capable of balancing this many weapons, ashes, etc.
    Also, Overhaul mod for DS1 is a life saver. It's basically wex dust and some QoL improvements. Highly recommend it when you revisit. Sorry if I mentioned it before, I've been spreading the word for a while lol. I had been playing DS1 for a month and took a break right before Return to Lordran 🤦‍♂Hope I'll actually pay attention to those events next year.

      I def kinda agree with you on not loving DS3's hitstun. I was watching someone play DS3 again the other day and forgot how much I hated the two hit system, especially when it came to bigger weapons. Having to just sit there and watch your character wait for the next hit was such a bore.
      I'll def check out that Overhaul Mod you suggested tho, that sounds really nice!

    12:30 A brief return to DS3 reminded me of this as well. There's potential for an interesting interaction, but it's predicated on good Blues arriving quickly, me holding back a lot, or the invasion turning into something else entirely. Some of my absolute favourite invasions did start out as solo hosts, but the vast number of unsatisfying experiences vastly drown them out...
    I'm glad Return to Lordran was fruitful! I love DS1, but I don't think I've ever felt a calling to return to its PvP, sadly.

    • @RofoTheGyrm
      @RofoTheGyrm  Год назад +1

      I just feel like I never get those interactions with blues in Elden Ring like I once used to in DS3. I don't quite know what it is, maybe it's the ridiculously high TTK, but for some reason it's just not really the same in this game.
      Also DS1 PVP is goofy as hell, it's not something I'd ever be able to take seriously but it was a very welcome change of pace
