_Book of Dreams_ is one of my favourite albums of all time. The drum intro was great! Then my heart sank when I saw you were going to ruin _Swingtown_ with a cheesy bassoon accompaniment. And what's this? ... not just one, but _six_ bassoons! Bassoons even filled in what were vocal harmonies on the original. But then ... it started to sound _good._ No, not good ... _insanely good!_ Whoever made this arrangement is a genius. And Josh knocked it out of the park as usual. The talent is off the scale.
Well done Josh and Kelly, it is easy to see this is your passion not just a job. It isn’t work when you love it. People who find their passion are blessed.
This collaboration is so freaking genius!! I just happened to see this video which caught my eye because of my love for SMB and Book of Dreams LP, which no one ever even seems to remember anymore! Great job!
Josh’s true mastery absolutely shines here. A bassoon band?! Who does that?! Great players all on a whimsical, original, fantastic take on a classic. Bravo!
This got me surprisingly emotional. I've been a musician and a music teacher for about 20 years, and next week will be my last on the job (retired from music 3 years ago, will retire from teaching next week due to a new opportunity elsewhere). I used to say to my students that music is magic made real, because it creates invisible but strong bonds between people: the ones playing, the ones listening, and between those. I've been following your channel for a couple of years, and this series of yours just proves my point. This is magic made real, and the ending brought tears to my eyes. Thank you Josh! Best regards from Lisbon, Portugal.
Brought a much needed dose of humanity in my life every week. Alongside great music of course. So good it would deserved to be made into a boxset. But... That would had been in another time.
Rock E Bassoon: Drummer is Craig Hetrick (member of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO)); Bassoons right to left: Mark Ortwein (ISO), Mike Muszynski (ISO), Kara Stolle, Kelly Swensson, Matt Gutwein, Doug Spaniol
I know that for me, when I think of Guitar God Steve Miller, and Swingtown, the first instrument I hear is the Bassoon. John Fogerty, of CCR fame, and multi instrumentalist, once said the hardest instrument he ever tried to play (and he plays strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion) was the Bassoon. this is amazing beyond belief! Hey Josh, you are amazing.
I was lucky enough to see you and Carson in Dallas. I’m very glad you’re both home safe and sound. Very proud of you and all of your friends. Get some well earned rest. Looking forward to seeing and hearing many more performances.
That’s Craig Hetrick playing drums. And yes, he’s awesome! He’s a longtime member of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra percussion section and also teaches at Butler.
Not only is he seemingly a “cool” guy, (just found tonight, so I don’t know him), but he gives the proper “Special Thanks” and accolades, very cool. Especially with the “me me me” mentality and 6-second attention span of todays media casters, is nice to see some form of formality and thanks, still exist. Nice dude . …✌️👍 Keep it going . …
At first I was "oh, cool, they are using a bassoon to lay down the bass line". Twenty seconds later I realized the entire melody is being played by multiple bassoons. :D Awesome stuff as always!
Well, that was amazing! Josh and Kelly, thanks so much for this wonderful journey you've led us on. Only Josh would put bassoons and Steve Miller together!
The collaboration with Rock E Bassoon was so much fun! I really enjoyed it. The whole series was magical and such a pleasure to watch. Josh I'll forever be grateful to you and all of your talented friends who have provided me with so much wonderful music over the last few years. Thank you.
What a journey! I'm sad to see it end, but at the same time, I'm looking forward to watching the whole thing back-to-back, as I'm sure you and Kelly intended. This was such a monumental project! So glad you and Kelly could do it (with a little help from your friends). Thanks again for sharing it with all of us!
What a great song choice - Steve Miller Band was the very first concert I went to in 1977! Coincidentally, his opening act was Gary Wright and I discovered Chase (ans Sierra) Eagleson here on RUclips through their cover of "Dream Weaver"
Cherish these days. Kelly and Josh, you are bringing amazing music to the world which would be enjoyed by only a few were it not for Kelly's outstanding camera and editing work. This last video is one of my favorites. My eldest granddaughter has been playing bassoon all through high school. She was recently given her very own bassoon to continue her love for the instrument. I'm sending a link to this video so she can be encouraged about playing an instrument that do few choose, but had such a lovely sound. Thanks for being different, Josh. Thanks for making a record of Josh's life, Kelly.
good people attract good people, and josh has attracted listeners and professional musicians, a great performance, and this one is a tuff one to tackle. 1st and down !!! THANX !
@@RockEBassoon My father taught woodwind performance at the college level, including both oboe and bassoon. He made both oboe and bassoon reeds. For bassoons, the reeds looked a lot like bass versions of oboe reeds. (I can still hear the cackle of both.) BTW - as a toddler I was fascinated with the bassoons he'd occasionally bring home. I can still remember the shiny orange color and the plentiful chrome keys.
The bassoon, who knew? The things we have been exposed to on this channel. Rock and Roll mandolins. Funky banjos. The magical disco banjo. And now Rock E. Bassoons. Fabulous.

OK, I've been trying for a couple of minutes to come up with a clever phrase using "bassoon" (bassoonery?), but realized that what I really want to say is how much I appreciated the performance of that drummer. Yes, he just did his job, but it was a tough job and he did it well. He created that quick tempo and maintained while delivering some sweet licks.

Thanks Josh and REB, this had me smiling. That tone on the basson hit just the right note for the song then Josh let lose with his vocals. Job well done. Made me smile
