    What Harper showed in LF - a just criticism of yours - was an “over-confidence play” on what was really, a high fly ball he lost in the sun. It was genius on his part. He knew he wasn’t going to make the out-catch bc of the sun, but he made the base runners believe him. He delayed their ability to run, potentially saving a base or a run.

    Hacky sack is a game with a mini beanbag the size of a baseball that kids play, the goal is to kick the beanbag around in a circle without letting it hit the ground. Or at least that's how I remember it lol

      Hacky sack is probably the best analogy for what the player was doing, but my mind went to Sepak Takraw, an Asian game I found out about when I lived in Thailand for a couple of years. It's kind of like volleyball, but with no hands allowed. The kids often practice by playing a game that's essentially hacky sack, but with a takraw ball which is a hollow ball about 5.3 inches in diameter. (It was originally made from woven rattan, nowadays they are mostly plastic.) If you've never seen the sport, it's well worth watching. Here's a link to the gold medal match from the 2014 Asian games between Thailand and Korea: ruclips.net/video/mpFJs-ftwdQ/видео.html The commentary is in Thai.

    I'll update this comment as I finish watching the video.
    At 1:45 the pitcher had to try to run to third base because he couldn't throw the ball to third because nobody was there to catch it! They had a defensive shift on with the shortstop to the other side of second base and the third baseman playing between second and third near where the shortstop usually is. This year they've added a rule that you have to have two infielders on each side of second base, but that doesn't prevent the defense from shifting within that restriction, so this can still happen.
    Regarding the gloves, that happens because players will use the same glove for several years.
    At 5:30: I can say from experience that when you lose the ball in the lights or sun sometimes all you can do is guard your face and listen for where it lands, especially if the wind is swirling. In fact this was how I dealt with all fly balls my first half season of youth baseball, turns out I needed glasses...
    At 6:00 no, it's not foul. A ball hit to the outfield on the fly is fair or foul based on where it lands, but a ball that lands in the infield and rolls to the outfield is determined by which side of first or third base it passes (if it hits the base it's fair), and a ball fielded in the infield is fair or foul based on where it is when a fielder touches it. Sometimes if a speedy hitter drops a bunt close to the line you'll see the fielder decide they have no chance at making the play to first in time so they just let it roll in the hopes it will roll foul and then they can touch it.
    At 6:35 you might be interested to know that redheads are more likely to have an allergic reaction to contact lenses! Happened to my mom.
    At 6:55 the ump called timeout while the pitcher was in his windup, and that's the result of a pitcher trying to abort.
    Hackysack is basically keep-ups but with a beanbag.
    At 8:00 you hear the announcer start to mention Vlad Guerrero -- a player famous for hitting pitches he had no business swinging at.
    Finally, he not only missed the tag, but then his throw to first went into the outfield. You're not the only one who gets turned around on baserunning weirdness however. Once, a Cubs player named Javy Baez hit a ground ball, which the first baseman fielded and stood in front of him waiting to tag him. Baez, for some reason, tried to run back to home plate. The first baseman at this point should have just walked over to step on first base for the out, but in a rush of adrenaline, tried to chase Javy. Finally he realized he couldn't catch up... so he threw the ball to the catcher! Javy then turned around and ran to first again, and the second baseman had come over to cover the throw, but this time the throw was wild and sailed into the outfield, and Javy even got to second on the play.

    The type of webbing is the problem. Players tend to like webbing they can see through but block the sun with on a high fly ball. So they tend to avoid solid or woven webbing. But over time the H webbing which is named for its shape stretches and a hard hit ball can get stuck in the gaps.

    The play that happened here is that 2 people where occupying 1st base. Since the player on 2nd didn't advance, the player on 1st had to make room for the batter to advance to 1st. Somebody was getting out no matter what. If the player on 2nd did go, it would have likely turned into a double play, so it was better to just sacrifice 1 player.

    Players get new shoes, new helmets, new bats, etc. all the time. But they love their gloves and keep them as long as they can. They even have them repaired sometimes. I'd guess the broken gloves in these videos were old and worn out.
    It's a foul ball if it goes into foul territory before passing first or third base and stays there, or it touches something in foul territory (like a wall or a fielder). But if it goes back into fair territory before passing a base and without hitting anything, it's a fair ball. This happens more often than most spectators realize. Sometimes on a ball that's hit straight down, the first bounce is in foul territory (you can see this at 9:50). Other times a bunt will start in foul territory and roll fair. What was unusual at 5:47 was that the ball had so much spin on it that it took a sharp turn into fair territory.
    Hacky-sack is a game where people kick around a soft leather sack with the goal of keeping it from hitting the ground. I wouldn't call it a sport, because it's not really a competition with winners and losers.
    Here's the situation at 9:00. The bases are loaded with no outs. The batter hit a soft line drive at an infielder, who dropped it. The baserunners thought he was going to catch it, so they retreated to their bases (if a fly ball is caught, all runners have to retouch their bases or they can be put out). But since the ball wasn't caught, the batter is not out, which means a force out can be made at every base. So the fielder flips the ball to second base to put out the runner from first. They then throw the ball to first base, where a fielder tags the runner going back to that base, but that runner is already out (because of the play at second). They then throw the ball back to second base, where they try to make a play on the runner, but he's already retreated to second base, so he's safe. They end up with the bases still loaded with the original runner at first out. The defense screwed up in this case. If they'd tagged the runner at second base before tagging the base, they'd have had an easy double play. Or if, after making the out at second, they had tagged the runner when he came off the base, it would have been a double play. They messed up by trying to make a play on a runner who was already out.

    So the foul ball question you had. The ball is considered fair or foul based on where it lands past 1st or 3rd base. If it touches any part of the line it's considered fair. The ball can roll from foul territory to fair, or visa versa, before it reaches the base. If it does not reach a base it is judged on where the ball comes to a stop or where a defensive player touches the ball.

  • @zacharyliles8657
    @zacharyliles8657 Год назад

    So the rule with fair/foul balls is a little complicated- A ground ball is determined by when it's first touched by a defender. If the ball starts foul then rolls into fair territory before a defender can get to it, it is a fair ball. Vice versa if it starts in fair territory then rolls foul. If the ball passes through the infield the determination is whether the ball was in fair or foul territory when it crossed over 3rd or 1st base. Then obviously fly balls are determined by where they land. A ball on the line is fair and in order to be foul it needs to be entirely across the foul line (kind of like a goal in soccer).

  • @stevedietrich8936
    @stevedietrich8936 Год назад +1

    Some of those lost fly balls are because of indoor stadiums where the ball gets "lost" against the light colored roof. The ball can also be "lost in the lights" where the fielder has to look directly against one of the floodlights that light the field and can't see the ball against the brightness. Certain sky conditions can also make seeing fly balls more difficult, even in a "day game". By the way, it is "hitter" not "batsman". "Batsman" is a giveaway that somebody is new to the game.

    A hit ball is considered fair or foul by which side of the first or third base pads the ball is on as it passes it. If it crosses over the baseline before it reaches the base, it changes whether or not it’s a live ball.

    Ground balls in the infield are fair as long as the ball is fielded on or to the infield side of the white line. It doesn't matter where the ball hit the ground. A ground ball hit past first or third base is fair as long as it was fair when it passed the base, even if it subsequently rolls foul. A ball hit in the air past first or third base is only fair as long as it first lands on the line or to the playing field side of the line.

  • @TreyM1609
    @TreyM1609 Год назад

    No @6:02 it’s not a foul ball until the ball touches something besides the ground before the bag or a players glove. After the bag it has to be inside the baseline. So putting “English” on it like he did it bounced back in play before 3rd base or before someone picked it up

  • @dynamodan8216
    @dynamodan8216 Год назад

    Fair/foul is determined when the ball passes 1st/3rd base (or comes to rest failing to do so). It doesn't actually happen often, less than once a 10,000 pitch season, but that's the correct call.

  • @mjbull5156
    @mjbull5156 Год назад

    If a ball hit into foul territory crosses the foul line back into fair territory before it passes 1st or 3rd base becomes a fair hit and the runners can advance. Similarly, a ball hit into fair territory that crosses the foul line after passing 1st or 3rd base remains a fair hit. What is interesting if the ball hits 1st or 3rd base and goes foul it is a hit, but the ball can bounce wildly if it hits the side of the base.

    When the ball spin into foul territory and came back in it was not a foul ball at that point UNLESS it remained foul after it passed third base. The location of the ball when it passes the base determines whether it is foul or fair.

    What happened here: When there is a runner on 1st, 1st and 2nd, 1st and 3rd, or bases loaded with less than 2 outs and the fielder intentionally drops the ball (or if it drops in general in the infield) then its a dead ball and the batter is out and the runners return to their original bases. This is to prevent exactly that situation. Because if there is a popup or linedrive in the infield like that, then the fielder can intentionally do that to get an easy double play or triple play and the runners have a 0% chance to be safe since every play to the next base is a force out.
    This rule has some controversy because there are times where infielders will miss a popup but the ball is in the outfield but the rule will still be called. This has also happened in the playoffs late into games like this: ruclips.net/video/X-6ujbLknUc/видео.html
