Stone Temple Pilots would go on to become one of the biggest bands of the 90’s. Despite the fact that critics never gave them their due, The band would rise to superstordom with their debut album 1992’s Core which spawned several huge singles with Plush, Sex Type Thing and Creep. They followed that up with the release of 1994’s Purple which produced another two huge singles with Interstate Love Song, Big Empty and Vasoline and Unglued which was never released as an official single, but charted. By the mid 90’s, Weiland drug addiction threatened the existence of the band as his substance problem was made public when he was arrested in 1995 during a drug bust. Lucky for him he avoided jail after agreeing to to enter rehab telling Rolling Stone . "I am in the process of getting sober," "I want to be happy again, and I'm going to do something about it before it kills me or f’s up everything in my life." It came out years later that the band almost fired Weiland in 1994 and replaced him with singer Dave Coutts
The band would take a break during the mid 90’s before reconvening for 1996’s Tiny Music, songs from the vatican gift shop. A stark change in sound showing more glam and psychadelic influences would winn over some critics in the process while producing several big singles with big bang baby, lady picture show and trippin on a hole in a paper heart.. But, Weiland’s inability to stay sober resulted in the band only touring for a short period of time to support the album including losing out the opportunity to open for Kiss, which other alternative band Alice in Chains filled in for. It was ironic that Alice in Chain was in the same boat only playing a handful of shows the same year.. STP would soon cancel their own headlining dates as well.. Guitarist Dean Deleo would tell Rolling Stone in 1997 "Scott called and said, 'I'm fing up - I need help, When I talked to him, I could hear his condition. He said, 'I'm going into treatment.' I said, 'I'd love to believe that.' And on Monday, he checked himself in."
By early 1997 Weiland’s bandmates once again hooked up with singer Dave Coutts but formed the side project Talk Show. which I’ve done a whole video on the link is down below. Weiland in the meantime would go on to release his first solo record 12 bar blues.. Weiland would be arrested again in 1998 for possession forcing him to cancel his tour dates for his solo album.
By 1999 Weiland was in trouble again being arrested and Under California's "three strikes" law, this meant a mandatory prison stint. He would be sentanced to 12 months in prison, but would only serve 4. Around this time he would tell Rolling Stone "I felt I was achieving something after I had been there a month and a half," he said. "They say that in order for [sobriety] to work, you have to surrender. It happened over a period of time, being locked down, dealing with fear of the unknown. But once I surrendered, stopped trying to control everything, I started getting peace of mind."
By 1999 the band reassembled and put out their follow up record No. 4 which gave the band their biggest single with sour girl.
The band would return in 2001 releasing their final album with Weiland for the time being with Shangri La Dee Da. According to MTV the album sensions were tension filled as Weiland became addicted to pain medication. Tensions between the band members escalated to the point that the last gig of the tour in 2002 saw a fight breakout backstage between Scott Weiland and guitarist Dean Deleo. While the band wouldn’t officially announce their breakup it soon came out that Weiland had left the group. Some reports claim he was fired while others claimed he walked away. He would end up joining supergroup Velvet revolver who I’ve done a whole video on. The link is down below. Weiland would tell Howard Stern in 2004 how during the making of the first Velvet Revolver studio the deleo brothers were in the studio next door working on an alien ant farm album and they seemed to have made amends with each other.
By 2007-2008 rumors were abound about a stone temple pilots reunion. According to Velvet Revolver’s duff mckagan, Weiland intiially hid the reunion from his bandmates creating tension within the band. Weila

People always refer to the "big four" of the nineties being Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam. While I love all those bands, I feel like STP was underrated in comparison. @Christopher Bingham You're absolutely right of course, and it's only smart business sense, you can't hold it against them in the slightest. The other person is right as well though, when you go see the current incarnations of STP and AiC you aren't going to see the same acts that were on stage in the 90s. Staley and Weiland may not have contributed much to the rhythms or even lyrics of their classic albums, but their voices were instruments and they were a gigantic part of what made their respective bands good to begin with. Not only their voices, but their charisma came through in the music and especially on-stage. I'm very happy that the other band members are still out there making music. They are legendary musicians in their own right and unlike the other person I'd definitely still pay to go see them, but without Scott and Layne those bands are ATP and AiC in name only.

@@DJSockmonkeyMusic I wouldn’t see them either. Had The Doors gone on with a new singer after Morrison died I would not have been interested either. I’m sure many are no longer interested in anything STP produces without Weiland and at the same time they’ll certainly retain some casual fans who aren’t stringently loyal to the original lineup. I know STP tried and bombed with their side project Talk Show and whatever other name they chose, Art of Rock or something, so it’s a no brainer that in order to keep the cash cow going they’d need the STP brand to continue. From a business standpoint I get it and it’s certainly their prerogative, I’m just not into the business aspect of it and so not interested. Morally it just seems cheap… I also have this thing about aging rock stars looking silly at 60+ rockin it up on stage. Foreigner with 75 year old mick Jones wrinkled, bald and overweight still up there playing “feels like the first time” cracks me up. Must feel more like the 100,000th time. Get real. @Anderson Cooper Scott was definitely the driving force and wrote the lyrics, so no Robert didn’t write the songs. The musical aspect / melodies sure. Scott was one of rocks greatest frontmen, singers and a great lyricist as well. STP without Weiland bombed with their side acts talk show and art of rock or whatever they called it. They knew the only way to keep that cash cow going was to keep the STP brand name and try getting another singer onboard, which only achieved mediocre results… Of course its their prerogative and from a business standpoint I get why they didn’t change their name... But strictly loyal fans to the original lineup aren’t interested in an STP without Weiland, but some casual fans will certainly still go to a show. Weiland achieved enormous success with velvet revolver. Compare that with Talk Show… which just as well could have been more aptly named “no show”. I get that they still wanna make money keeping STP going on life support, but morally it just comes off as kinda cheap. Like if The Doors had gone on with a new singer after Morrison died. Sure they ‘could’ have done it but…

@Anderson Cooper I’ll take your word for it. Haven’t heard it, the last STP album with Scott, but I wouldn’t at all be surprised if it sucked. Plenty of bands went out in the same fashion as say an old washed up fighter like Ali vs Holmes with a subpar or awful last album. The lifespan of any music artist is usually pretty short lived. Led Zeppelin’s last album wasn’t awful but certainly not that great as they traded the retro sounding Hammond organ for more synth pop background filler. Bowie’s mid / late 80’s sucked and he admitted those were his “Phil Collins years”. Floyd’s last album final cut sucked and was really just a roger waters solo album… Speaking of Roger, he being the lyricist and with Gilmour as the main musical writer together produced some fantastic records. Apart they were just okay. Point being they needed each other. Same argument can be made for Scott & Robert. Scott wrote the lyrics, Robert music. They were best together. Anyway none of this is a big deal obviously and everyone sees it however they see it. For me STP had it’s moment and shined brightly but it’s over and the guys are getting older too. Once you reach 50-60 it’s time to hang it up. My opinion of course but I’ll just give one example and that’s Mick Jones from Foreigner who is 76, balding wrinkled and pudgy and still up there playing “Feels like the first time”. Really must feel more like the 100,000th time.

    • @tylurmackinnon6217

Actually the music of STP was written by Robert not Scott. Robert wasn’t a druggie and Scott initially wasn’t on drugs for Core.
The opposite is true. The best music is written sober, drugs destroy art and music more often than aid in great work which is the rare exception.
Scott’s only successful drug album was Purple. Core, Number 4, and Contraband, Scott’s most successful albums, were all written during his brief moments of sobriety. His other albums which didn’t sell that much were all made on drugs.

Scott Weiland struck me as someone that just couldn't help making everything difficult for himself. He seemed like his own worst enemy, he just couldn't get out of his own way. I guess we'll never know where all that came from. It's very tragic, because if he could have just let go and done what he did best, it wouldn't have had to end the way it did.

Scott was an amazing soul, and I'm very disappointed I didn't get to see STP live when I had the chance. If I grew up in the 80s, I would probably have jumped at the chance to see the band during the Core or Purple tour. STP shows must have been a blast when he was around I bet.
Regarding the AIC-KISS shows (and excuse me for this since I'm no music expert) but I believe Layne was on a downward spiral with drugs...The guy was sick and if you look closely at one of the videos of one of the shows, Jerry is periodically checking on Layne to make sure he was okay. Now idk if any of this is true, so if someone could confirm this that would be great.

I personally think its a huge disrespect to any band member of any band to keep the same name after a band members death and then replacing them with another person under the same name.
AIC( huge regret-- RIP Layne), Journey, ACDC,STP, and Sublime (also regrettably ) just to name a few did this and it just makes u involuntary cringe when you hear a dead member has been replaced.
Don't know why these after mentioned bands cant take a page from Led Zeppelin and The Doors and just do there own thing or use another name. Yes, some of these band members were toxic to the band cuz of drugs and shit. DONT CARE! They started the band together and once one dies thats it.

Every one of their albums sounded distinctly different, maybe the first two some similarities but their ability to change styles so superbly is one of the things that set them apart from many others. Imagine Kurt cobain singing “And so I know” lol. I mean, sour girl, sex type thing and Big Bang baby all sound like three songs from three completely different bands and singers.

People always talk about how so many great singers fall to their addictions. The fact is, musicians in general have a huge problem with addictions, the frontmen are just more "famous" or have more well known names, so their troubles make the news more often. There's not some tragic specific gravitation between drugs and singers, it's when just young people from low to middle class backgrounds are given massive fame and lots of money these kinds of things are not uncommon. Not taking anything away from any of these guys, there's so much wasted potential in all the drug related deaths of musicians. It's very sad.
Not everyone has an iron will, and not everyone can be expected to. This is why friendship and familial bonds are so important, and early intervention as well as tough love must be given. To let this sort of thing fester silently in the hopes that the problem will go away on it's own is the worst thing that can possibly be done aside from directly enabling.

Music remains either good or bad in the eyes(and ears) of the listening public, regardless of the opinions, statements and reviews of critics. Example with these guys: Critics say STP aren't good. I don't care, think they ARE good, listen to their music, watch their videos and collect their catalog.
