This is the sound I've been looking for for 50 years. When I was a kid in the early 60s I lived about a mile from a refinery that had a fleet of these. They drove by my house every day, all day, screaming like demons from hell. It's a sound I can still hear in my head. This video is the closest I've heard since.
When I was a kid there was a big trucking company 1 mile from the house. They weren't allowed to run on Sundays before 9pm. At 9, I would go in my sister's room to listen to those White Mustangs and B Model Macks start up and leave. IT was beautiful.....one of the reasons I drove for 45 years.......and yes, hard of hearing!lol!
@@EbolaSquirrel Life is good, thanks for asking. I'm old but active, exercise, healthy food, etc. RUclips is the best thing that happened to the internet, in my opinion. If it happened since the invention of moving pictures, there's a good chance you can find it. I've revisited a lot of the past and learned a lot about the present. I hope you're well.
Erwin Klawuttke not true. Everyone of my friends can drive stick and that's about 30 people. More people in my town know how to drive stick than people who dont.
As far as I know only 40 % of the U.S. people are able to drive manuals. I agree that´s a lot in a country where 93 % of the cars have an automatic transmission. I wonder how many japanese people are able to drive stick. In Japan 99.9 % of the cars have automatic. Here in Germany just 25 % have automatics. Many people here have problems to drive automatics
Ok This is a Detroit 4/53 T meaning 53 cubic inches per cylinder and 4 of them. So that makes it only 3.48 litres in capacity. Look at 27 seconds in the video how it builds speed, impressive. Some people bag the Two stroke Detroits blah ,blah, but realize no four stroke engine of this capacity has its performance then and only maybe now with computers ,common rail injection, and multi-shot piezo electric injectors. Not bad for an engine designed in and around WW2. Its a two stroke so its supercharged and turbo charged hence the crazy sound. Its also a modular engine meaning the rods, pistons etc was common whether 3,4,6,8 cylinder etc. Completely bananas and I love it. Thank so much Glen Tuckey truckin. Loved them when I was a little boy, love em now.
It just sounds like its running fast because of the engine being a 2 stroke. It fires everytime the piston hits top dead center, unlike a 4 stroke. If you look closely at the gauge the most it hits is about 3k rpm.
The second I started watching my first thought was "my God, imagine if this was a Detroit diesel"... I felt all warm and fuzzy as I heard the acceleration ❤️ 🚚
The first time I watched this I was thinking, “man, I’m not sure a diesel is supposed to sound like that.” Then about 6 months later I started learning to drive in a W9 with an 8v71 and twin sticks, and realized that this is exactly how a diesel should sound.
I worked in the Fire Department for 27 years and my Engine Company had a pumper with an 8V92 with 500hp. That thing hauled and was limited by only having a 3spd Allison. She pushed a lot of smoke but man it was fun to be a driver. 2 strokes rule.
Makes me tear up hearing and watching this. Grew up on the old Jimmies. Best thing to learn on at that time as a young whipper snapper. Full throttle always. All balls. Mad shifting on a 5x4. Real good stuff.
I love all the you tube twin stick cowboys. All the one I see on here have power steering. It was a lot tougher without power steering back in the day. Most old trucks never had it.
When I started driving I was given the choice of an International with a 549-v8 w/5×3 or International R-190 with a 450 in line 6 ,w/5×3 and powersteering. I took the power steering because it was easier to split shift with your arm through the steering wheel.
No idea why this showed up on my feed, but love that old truck. When I started in the oil field in 1977 there was one old GMC (about 25 years newer than this one) that had the 4-53 Detroit engine. Always loved the sound of all of them. This brings back many memories.
That's super cool .... I have a 5/4 in my pete , getting ready to go with a small cummins 350 and a 15 speed , and yes I plan on keep the auxiliary for fun and challenge ,
Drove a 5 x 4 x 3 3 stick in the early 70's, hauled heavy equipment. Most of the time starting out the only way to upshift up was with the jake. I'll never forget
Very impressive GM. Tachs fast, sounds absolutely sweet and gets up to speed fast. Even got the Pabst Blue Ribbon bottle cap in there. Absolutely love the gauge layout on top of the dash. All trucks should be set up and sound like that.
Someone mentioned today (as I recall) no modern two stroke diesel are made. Electromotive Division GM has been using a turbo supercharger since the 1960's the Turbo is spooled off the cam shaft like a supercharger. When the boost reaches a certain point where the boost matches the throttle/RPM, the clutch disengages and the turbo will free wheel providing both boost and scavenging. This eliminates turbo lag. Detroit Diesel came up with something similar called the by-pass blower. Fairbanks Morse opposed piston engines, are turbocharged and have no roots type blower. Huge Marine diesel most are two stroke are turbocharged. EMD has not made a two stroke in years because of EPA Tier 4 particulate emission standards. They use computers and EFI to control swirl and make a more efficient engine. But I love the sound of a Detroit. As far as I know Detroit Two strokes are produced for off road such as in construction equipment.
I had a 20,000 lbs Hyster forklift with a 453 in it. People used to run away from it when I held it to the boards. I liked that, it kept them out of my way
I love the sound of a old 2 stroke Detroit, the music it makes is beautiful, I'm currently doing a pickup truck project, it's getting 6-71T with a triplex out of a old Mack model B, I had to rebuild the engine, when I first picked it up, the engine ran away on start up finding later on that the injector rack was locked due to 4 injectors, was a 6N-71 but turbo charged it with a intercooler, changed out the old C65 injectors with N80 injectors that I rebuilt and resleaved the engine with proper pistons for the turbo, it had a 10 speed which all of this came out off a 1977 international FleetStar but I had a spare triplex lying around, but when I'm done with this project, I will upload a video of it, only thing left I'm looking for is the parts for a Jake brake
My boss just got a dump that i drove for an hour. It’s got a 6up+ reverse eaton stick trans, and a 7.17 rear differential. The top speed is 45 at 2500-2800 depending on grade. 50 is all of 3000 wontons. I am a self taught stick shifter. I can drive anything. The trick is just doing a little with a stick or pedal till you learn it’s function. I was running skid loaders as a child grading out my yard, or scooping shit at the dairy.
Back in the '70s, I drove an Internat'l with a 318. Drove that particular truck for years. Had an air starter too. Altho it had a muffler, it was still loud in the cab, loud enough the radio was useless. Don't miss it but I do like hearing 'em.

screamin jimmy for ya
+Zachary Adams 2 - stroke -diesel sounds like that in the old days. search for the KRUPP TITAN diesel s of Germany in the 1950´s: they sounded similar
Never heard my Jimmy then
+Zachary Adams This thing is probably movin pretty quick, its only in a pickup truck, and likely well over 400ft/lb of torque.
+Zachary Adams It sounds like it's doing about 300 mph, but it looks like it's got 300 gears:)
Now we know why our grandpa’s who drove rigs in their younger years were hard of hearing in their golden years
what!!!
Tell me about it
@@kevinroberts8441 HE SAID NO WONDER WHY YOUR HARD OF HEARING. THE TRUCK IS NOISY
I wonder what it sounds like outside the truck

Two stick shifting in a country where most people cannot shift manually with one-stick-manuals
Erwin Klawuttke
Most truck driver's ain't never seen a 2stick let alone able to drive one.

The only time a four banger will sound that good.
These trucks came with 6v92 detriots, way bigger than the 453s
amen !
My dad was a Chevrolet D60 Detroit in Brazil in 1977 his was brand new.
Same engine same song...
that thing sounds so angry, its beautiful
That's what happens in a WIFE when she get mad at ....🤪🤪
no clutches were used in the making of this video
Not even to down shift?
Only to start going and to double clutch shift.
you dont need to double clutch, just start and stop.
Mike Andrews I find it easier to shift without a clutch way smoother for me
LMFAO!!!
Never before has "slow" looked so fast...
...or so complicated...
except for before
It's a Detroit diesel. They are very high RPM engines
Wym he's haulin ass dude
Harriman Fox no it's low rpm it's just the way the design of the engine makes it sound like that
It just sounds like its running fast because of the engine being a 2 stroke. It fires everytime the piston hits top dead center, unlike a 4 stroke. If you look closely at the gauge the most it hits is about 3k rpm.
lol when you gotta pick up the wife and shes mad at you... bring this so you don't have to hear her XD
LOL Yes!
Best suggestion ever.
You are right. Piss her off more with the noise
holy moley says it all wooooooooooooo.
Or just leave her ass.
Been watching this video for years now. Never get sick of the awesome sound those 2 strokes produce.
"Hey bro, pass the AUX cable"
"Dont play crap, okay?"
Whoops you have to put the CD in your computer...
The second I started watching my first thought was "my God, imagine if this was a Detroit diesel"... I felt all warm and fuzzy as I heard the acceleration ❤️ 🚚
It is lol
Why did they even bother with the radio?
+GerOffYeWeeBastard it is for when you're sitting on the side of the road. broke down.
+GerOffYeWeeBastard Put the music on max volume ;)

Timing when learning how to shift.
Put on a song that starts slow and winds up fast. It's how I did it years ago.
Keep the mostly stock look. Or most ppl just don't want to fuck with it
i've probably watched this video at least 300 times in the last few years......it just never gets old.
That's trucking in the blood.
One big question goes unanswered, what is the make of the car ? A vital statistic !
Same here ay, I remember when the video had about 50k views (if that) when I first found it.
I watch this from time to time still after 5 years and gives me chills every time. The sound of this truck is bone rattling.
I never get tired of watching or listening to this video
+EMDSD14R Yeah who wouldn't like the purr.

This has got to be one of the coolest videos everywhere. Been coming back to it for over a year now just to hear that Detroit scream
Very well done. Perfect gear shifting equalizing the engine"s rotation to the gear box for smooth gear shifting. Great pro!

Fantastic engine sounds and wonderfully complex shifting pattern! This is why people still love to drive manual transmission vehicles.
This brings back memories of Dad's Brigadier log truck with the 8V92... Liked!!
I used to drive one of these on a farm. Definitely not as fancy as yours but it was always a joy to drive. The interior is like a time capsule

One must shut the door on ones hand to get in the proper frame of mind to drive one of these.

Johnny Cash shifter knob. Nice.
Screaming jimmy love the sound especially with the turbo backing it up
The instant I heard it rev before it shifted i knew it was a Detroit Diesel
If ya cant find em, grind em! Love the video, could watch and listen to that truck all day...
The truck I learned to drive on was a 1956 Mack LJ wrecker with a 5x3 triplex, way back in the early 80s, that truck stayed in service up till 2008
Fast&Furious shifting in a nutshell
I love detroit diesel engines. It is more than engine of word, l think.
This have very power, and the sound as a synfoni...
Why they even put a radio in this rig is beyond me

I can't stop coming back to watch. Can't wait to build something Detroit powered
Nice! Love the old Detroits it's music to my ears, driven lots of them over the years.
PBR cap on the dash is awesome.
Damn that's a nice sounding diesel!
Sounds awesome! Did I hear some double clutching? Nice. Seems like the hardest part about driving that thing is remember which damn gear you're in lol.
actually, that is not a complicated setup. The red shifter is the splitter. The ball shifter is the gear selector.
my old man taught me how to doubeclutch with twin stick fuller transmission long time ago.i ws 15 or so. it was an old truck from the 50s with a great Perkins diesel engine in the front . i loved to drive it. it is not that difficult, it is also about feeling. not just stamping down that pedal and jerk it into another gear.big fun to drive though. i still do it in my car, although completely unnecessary, but old habits die slowly i guess..
actually the hardest part to me was always down shifting at first revving the engine to lose speed thru me for a loop for a week
Stephenie Grenoble bit late but couldn’t get over your ignorant comment, they didn’t say anything about the setup as it’s quite obvious what it all does. When driving the hard part IS remembering what gear you’re in, especially if you haven’t driven it before and can’t telling by looking at or touching the left shifter..
SAME...one of my fav videos on RUclips
Back in the day . My boss wouldnt buy nothing new. The new truck was a 69 Freight Shaker. Loved that GMC though
God I fucking love two-stroke diesels. Long live the GM Detroit Diesel engines left in existance. ~
sounds like a boosted civic with like 400+ horsepower.
Love the sound of that motor!
Ahhh, now that’s the music to fall asleep with!
Gotta love 2 stroke Detroit Engines, got a '86 Freightliner with a Silver 92 Detroit with a double 9 over transmission
I love the radio below the gauges, as if unless engine off you could hear anything less than a Howitzer going off.
Turbo spooling mixed with the 2 stroke is just hours of music 🤘🏻
No time to fool with a phone in that truck.
sounds like a old 453-T....mean engine!
detroit.yup listen to that rpm
Is it a gasoline engine?

Holy cow this thing sounds sooo gooooddd

Steve Carras Lol I missed it at first, but the left knob actually has a picture of Johnny’s face on it.
Yes, on the left I noticed
thing sounds freaking mean !
sounds amazing
It's loud, it's obnoxious, it's gotta twin stick and a mean ass jake. I like it !!!!!
wow sounds like a race car.... incredible sound
