The Anti Hero! Yes! A very good depiction is Bad Santa. Billy Bob plays a character that is the anti hero. You know they are a miss understood mean person with good intentions.
It is because Don is our "hero". The point of view character around whom the show revolves. Just look at Breaking Bad for another example. Walt is an awful, awful person, but people hate his wife more than him because he's our "hero". It's a powerful effect. Also, yes, sexism has something to do with it culturally.
