    So many folks treat this song so seriously. First time I realized what the lyrics were I fell to the floor I was laughing so hard. I guess those were different times.

    I was a young girl when this came out and it really moved me as a passionate love song. Learning it was about a young man & a drag artist was equally hilarious & beautiful. A very clever song delivered without irony

    The original version mentions "Coca Cola." The BBC did not allow product advertisements in songs so it was changed to "cherry cola." Also, the line, while referencing how clubs in Soho would sweeten their drinks to make them more palatable for younger patrons, also works as foreshadowing. Not everything in the club is what it seems.

    A story about a young man's first experience with a drag artist... and actually written sensitively and with no prejudice...

    • @NondescriptMammal
      @NondescriptMammal Год назад

      The lyrics are ambiguous though, nothing in them says that Lola is a man... "and so is Lola" can just as easily be interpreted to mean that Lola, possibly a woman, is also glad that he (the singer) is a man

    • @richardctaylor79
      @richardctaylor79 Год назад +5

      @@NondescriptMammal nope...... its definitely about a young man's first experience with a drag artist/transvestite.... they've admitted it in interviews etc... its not ambiguous at all

      @@NondescriptMammal I've seen this argument but what's the point of it if the Kinks have said its about their manager who's had this happen?

    • @NondescriptMammal
      @NondescriptMammal Год назад +2

      All I was saying is that part of the lyric, as it stands by itself, is inherently ambiguous, in that it is semantically open to two very different interpretations. I suspect that Davies constructed it this way intentionally, as it seems too clever to have been accidental... I assume Davies gave it some careful thought when writing his lyrics. Obviously, the whole "girls will be boys and boys will be girls" part is a bit less ambiguous.
      Even Davies own explanations of the song's meaning and the incident that inspired it, has varied substantially in the details in different interviews. Sometimes it happened to him, sometimes his manager, sometimes in a club, sometimes in a hotel or apartment... to the NY Times he said, “One of our crew at the time met this beautiful blonde and he took her back to the hotel. In the morning, he saw the stubble growing on her chin. So, he got a surprise!”. Other times he or his manager simply danced with the person before noticing their stubble.
      The point being, it is not unheard of for a rock songwriter to not be completely transparent about their inspirations and meanings in interviews. He also once said: 'It's based on a personal experience. But not every word.". So I happen to think he purposely meant the song to be open to interpretation, and was clever in doing so. Or maybe he made it ambiguous on purpose just so it wouldn't be banned at radio stations, back in the day when they were more sensitive and prudish about "controversial" lyrics. Only he knows for sure, his interview answers notwithstanding. I'm not arguing about his overall intent, it's just a song after all.

      @ivorscrotumic3556 Год назад

      @@richardctaylor79 It's not that simple tho. The lyrics ARE (deliberately) ambiguous.
      The meaning of the song as a whole isn't, that's quite clear, but Nondescript is correct, those particular lyrics are written to be ambiguous. Maybe you need to read their comment a bit more closely.

    Funnily enough this was initially band by the BBC in the UK. Not because of the Trans lyrics but because originally the song said "we drank Coca Cola" and the BBC did not allow advertising or product placement. So the Kinks produced a version which substituted Coca Cola for Cherry Cola.

    I heard this song at about 16 years of age, just thought the Kinks were an awesome band, especially with their hit Girl you really got me. This song depending upon you can be understood two ways either Lola is a man, which appears to be most peoples reaction or it means Lola is glad he is masculine and a man, a brilliant play of words!!

    The song "Walk on the Wild Side" by Lou Reed is a nice "bookend," a companion song, to "Lola." You may wish to give it a listen with the lyrics in sight. "WotWS" is about Andy Warhol's clique of cross-dressers in 1970s New York City ("The Factory"); a commune-like group of people offering mutual support and appreciation.

    What is interesting is that the lyrics don't actually say that Lola is a man, but cleverly suggest it. The lyrics are
    But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
    And so is Lola
    All this actually says is that Lola is also glad that I'm a man! Like saying "I'm glad I'm a man and so is my wife" (because my wife wouldn't want me if I wasn't a man, so of course she is also glad that I'm a man!)

    • @jackmars931
      @jackmars931 Год назад +1

      It was the UK, specifically the BBC that made them change it because of the BBC's advertising rules. The difference is simply the single version vs the album version, and the album version, which says "Coca-Cola" wold have been no problem is the US. So while the single version ended up being played in both the US and UK, the only version that makes any sense to be referred to as "The UK version" is the "Cherry-Cola" version.
