    ----------------
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has spent his entire career explaining away the inevitable downsides of massively increasing the power of the state over the individual.
Sanders once identified as a socialist who, with reservations, admired the economic achievements of Cuba under Fidel Castro, of Nicaragua under the Sandinistas, and of the Soviet Union right up to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Running for office as a candidate for the Liberty Union Party in Vermont in the 1970s, Sanders sought a top tax rate of 100%, saying "nobody should earn more than $1 million."
Sanders wanted to stop businesses from moving out of their original communities, arguing that the ultimate solution to protect workers was national legislation that would "bring about the public ownership of the major means of production." He favored the government seizure of "utilities, banks, and major industries," without compensation to investors or stockholders.
Shortly after he was elected mayor of Burlington, Vermont, in 1981, Sanders told a room full of charity workers, "I don't believe in charities," because only the government should provide social services to the needy.
He traveled to Nicaragua in 1985 to meet Sandinista leaders, who had installed a socialist government after overthrowing an American-backed dictator. Sanders attended the sixth-anniversary celebration of the Sandinistas' revolution and praised Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega.
In 1988, he visited the USSR, three years before it collapsed. After his trip, Sanders praised the Soviets' social and cultural programs, saying American leaders had much to learn from the communist system. In 1989, Sanders traveled to Cuba to seek a meeting with Fidel Castro-though he ended up settling for the mayor of Havana.
Today, Sanders calls himself a "democratic socialist" and has become a millionaire. He favors single-payer health care, free public college for all, and a $15 minimum wage. And he has distanced himself from some of his former positions in support of the Sandinistas and Castro, pointing instead to Nordic countries as examples to follow.
But one thing has remained constant as Sanders has shifted his focus from Nicaragua, Cuba, and the USSR to Denmark, Finland, and Sweden: In all of these countries, he's misled his followers about the political and economic realities on the ground.

@@brit1066 National health program is a nice name for compulsory insurance you have to pay and the elimination of health insurance freedom. This means that there will always be medical treatments which can't be covered by any ikind of nsurance no matter how rich you are. You won't be able to fully cover yourself - just for the sake of equality. As the years will go by, the cost of this compulsory insurance will go up and the coverage will go down. Moreover, the relative quality of the medical service you'll get will also degrade as the incentive for providing a better service evaporated.
How do I know this? I live in such country. My family health insurance cost per month is about USD2000, I can't have a better insurance coverage (by law) and the quality of the health service I'm getting is nowhere near of what I could get in the US.
If you wish to punish yourself for the stupidity of other people which are not responsible for their financial behavior - go ahead create yourself a national health program and enjoy it.

But if you bother to read the ENDLESS accounts of the National Health Systems in MANY MANY OTHER COUNTRIES COMPARABLE TO THE USA, you will see just how much better you are off under a NATIONAL SYSTEM.
Are you saying that if you cannot ford that $2000 a month then you get NO HEALTH COVERAGE.
As a Brit who has lived in the USA for 50 years, I have personal and family experience of BOTH SYSTEMS.
My experience in the USA has been EXCELLENT, because both myself and my wife have had good jobs with good benefits and now we have MEDICARE WHICH IS ALMOST AS GOOD AS THE NHS.
However I know of many people who have almost LOST EVERYTHING BECAUSE OF FAMILY HEALTH PROBLEMS AND LOSING THEIR JOBS.
While my family and my wife’s family in the UK GET VERY GOOD HEALTH CARE WITHOUT HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT LOSING CARE BECAUSE OF JOB LOSS.
Are you aware that the LEADING CAUSE OF BANKRUPTCY in the USA is failure to pay HEALTH CARE BILLS.
A situation UNKNOWN IN ANY OTHER COMPARABLE COUNTRY.
Oh and in the UK there is NO RESTRICTION on the desire to supplement health coverage with additional insurance.
So come on WHERE DO YOU LIVE?

    • @brit1066
      @brit1066 3 года назад +1

Omer Yehezkely You are a fool, are you saying that COMPULSORY COVERAGE IS BAD?
Are you actually ADVOCATING NOT GETTING ANY HEALTH CARE INSURANCE.
I suppose you would say that because CAR INSURANCE is mandatory it is bad.
So once again I am curious as to where you live?
Are you saying that the law actually PREVENTS you from taking out additional health insurance.
I urge you to ask people who have ACTUAL EXPERIENCE OF BOTH SYSTEMS before making such IDIOTIC REMARKS.
I WILL LEAVE YOU WITH ONE FINAL THOUGHT.
My wife and I visit our families in the UK regularly, we have made dozens of trips over the years, at NO POINT have ever needed to purchase HEALTH INSURANCE but we have used the NHS in the UK a number of times. If anything makes us closer to "ruin or worse" is, first, not having this conversation and, second, not doing anything to reverse the downward trend of how wealth is distributed and used (not to mention other issues, climate for instance).

lazurm very well written and thoughtful reply. My concern is not particularly profound or original; that is communism is generally a destructive form of governance. There is no perfect form of government in a world full of entropy and sin. It just seems to me that capitalism has a far superior record on elevating suffering. Putting power in the hands of a party or officials with martial powers is unsettling. The country which embraced liberty above comfort or safety is now considering the reverse

    • @lazurm
      @lazurm 4 года назад +3

@@irone93 I'd agree with you almost totally except that Sanders isn't a communist; he's a democratic socialist. This is an extremely decisive difference and one too often not understood by a majority of U.S. voters. I'd be willing to bet that the major issues he often refers to would find agreement with the great majority of Americans. This isn't the venue to properly detail what I'm getting at but I'd urge you to read or hear what he actually states (his current home page would probably do).
I don't think Bernie's problem is his policy ideas and his observations of how U.S. capitalism actually works but, rather, his total devotion to his ideals, total to the point of finding difficulty in making the kind of compromises he'd have to make at this point in history. He's also not very warm, or more accurately, personable in one on one conversations, something that results demand in a politician because people are, after all, mostly emotional and not highly logical in their choices...or in their preferences for legislation.
For now, the U.S. will have to settle for if he may influence (hopefully) where we must go to improve the lives of average Americans. He's already done that, though there's a lot of work yet to be done. One small example is the current push for a "living wage" for all workers and there are several other issues finally inspired to action, by Bernie S.

And see, this is why I hate most of the people who advocate for socialism communism and who lean further to the left. Because they can't stick with the same argument. Their entire argument is that they just can't be wrong. Democrats whom have fundamentally destroyed States like New York in California. Democrats whom have the highest taxes in their states as well as overwhelming amounts of homelessness and crime. And do you know why I don't like Bernie? Because he stopped complaining about millionaires whenever he became one. He went to socialist countries where there are people actually suffering, and literally decided to show off only the best parts of those countries as if to make them seem glorious and good. He is even publicly stated that bread lines are a good thing. And to put that phrase in context for you to understand. That means he believes in food scarcity and keeping everyone universally hungry. Living off of minimum amounts of food that they have to wait on every day in a line sometimes for hours at a time. And every time people escape these countries they all pretty much say the exact same thing. Ken P Many Americans die every year from not being able to afford healthcare and have a much lower life expectancy than many countries with free healthcare. The main difference is healthcare goes first to the rich than trickles down. Generally speaking, healthcare is 10% of GDP in America. It's 20% of GDP. Health care for all is undoubtedly a system that should be free for all. Health care for all was also first enacted by Nazi Germany, one of the most right-wing governments in all of history.

You will find with proof that wealthy people from Europe, and the United States gave the equivalent of billions of dollars to Hitler's Nazi regime secretly funneled through Prescott Bush's Union Bank in the 1930's. Prescott Bush was father to George H. Bush, and grandfather to George W. Bush. You can't build a powerful dictatorship, without lots of investment. Also, under authoritarian rule there is of course the possibility that they could take their stuff, but that’s not because there was a written rule (there was literally a dictator in power). And, to say that Fascism is anywhere near Communism is blatantly false. Communism is the ideology of being prideful of the common worker regardless of nationality while Fascism directly appeals to the downtrodden in a society who are prideful in their nation. To say that Nazi Germany was anywhere near communism is just incorrect. And, to be fair, they had a bustling economy that nearly conquered the world just a few years after having everything stripped from them. To call them a welfare-nanny state doesn’t do it much justice either.
On another side note, I don’t support these ideologies. I just like for the truth to be known about these governments so that we aren’t doomed to repeat history.

If someone needs an emergency surgery because their appendix bursts or they hurt themselves really bad then they get treated immediately and at very little cost to them, so there is no reason for them to leave. people go to the U.S because they can afford to pay to have and elective procedure done sooner. Meanwhile in the U.S people are dying because they are going bankrupt because of the healthcare system and drive to Canada to buy prescription drugs because they cost so much where they live. Those articles you listed are from liberal media outlets. Those outlets tend to be more socially liberal (don’t hate gay people, support gender and racial equality...etc) but are economically conservative so its not right to call them “left wing” because they are more centrist.

@@donlebo6824 This is the typical two party way of choosing a president. In Nixon vs JFK it was said afterwards that Nixon's 5 o'clock shadow lost to Kennedy's youthful appearance after the debate in which issues don't matter but make up for the camera does.

@@kimobrien. Yeah, but were talking about old people on either side. Lefties complain about "old white men" running things but they vote for em'. I don't think it has to do with age. It's the politics. Same goes for them crying for a woman president. As long as she's not conservative. It has nothing to do with Republicans being afraid of powerful women. It's the fact The Left don't want a pwerful conservative female president. So that age-ist b.s. goes out the window for me as well as the "powerful female" crap.Their beef is Conservatism. Not the age or sex. Oh and Race. Lefties love to push that . Oh and while I'm on the subject of "conservstism" it's funny how these Dems talk shit about that , when that party was it once. Look up PMRC.

@@donlebo6824 I'm not a Democrat, Bernie Bro., Our revolution or DSA (Democratic Socialists of America). My Party the Socialist Workers Party runs our own candidates in every Presidential election since 1948. We don't withdraw in favor of one or other candidates either. TheMilitant.com and PathfinderPress.com reflect our politics. Two party politics is filled with hypocrisy including the Tipper Gore attempt to protect sensitive ears.
