Martyn Joseph - Albert’s Place (Radio 2’s 21st Century Folk)

- Martyn Joseph performs his song ‘Albert’s Place’ to the woman who inspired it, Andrea Bell, in the Sunderland foodbank and soup kitchen that she runs.
Andrea and her fellow volunteers provide food and hot meals, and help people to find accommodation. Since the cost of living increased sharply, they have noticed a big increase in need.
Radio 2’s 21st Century Folk follows five real people as they each have an original song written about them.
To hear Andrea’s full story, find 21st Century Folk on BBC Sounds: www.bbc.co.uk/...
Produced by 7digital for the BBC.
The ministers in this government should be sat down and made to watch this clip. Incredible song and so poignant.
It would be casting pearls before swine, sadly. They don't care.
Exactly they don’t give a shit, they think it’s your fault if you need a food bank, bastards.
Wow. Just saw this on bbc breakfast. Was absolutely blown away with the tone of his voice and guitar.
The humanity of Martyn always shines like a beacon in our fragile world.🙏
How beautiful, 😢😢
A song that certainly deserves to be heard far, wide, and often. I’ve been fortunate enough to have had Martyn’s music in my life since the 90s, and it continues to be a balm for the times in which we have lived and continue to live. A profound, humble, thoughtful artist that deserves recognition for being able to tell stories such as Andrea’s with such depth and humanity. I see some folks saying this deserves to be a Number One hit; that would certainly be appropriate, and would honour Andrea and her team’s work as well as allowing more folks to experience Martyn’s craft.
Seen him in Chicago
Heard this on Jeremy Vine's program today while delivering in London and I was in tears, such a beautiful song, thank you to Martyn for this song and the biggest thank you to Andrea and her team and all those across the country that run food banks and soup kitchens
I too heard it on jeremy Vine and it made me stop, what a song and story.
Me too, i was just coming home from a trip to the doctors.
What a man - real subjects, true stories - always loved his voice and his live performances- what would he and Bruce Springsteen be like together? Hands across the pond!
He's done an album of Springsteen covers, Tires Rushing By In The Rain.
@@lizh7009 I know - but can you imagine them singing songs together?!
Wonderful songwriting from Martyn Joseph, highlighting the blight on the UK from the people who don’t care. But informing us not to give up because there are people out there who still believe there is a better way and also in their actions help people in dire need.
Absolutely outstanding performance. Thanks Andrea for your selfless work and also discovering Martyn in this tribute . Awesome 😊
your in for a treat , but you'll need tissues :)
What an amazing song written by an amazing lyricist for an amazing woman and her story..!
Remarkable overall achievement by Andrea Bell. I can only say "thank you", for all she personally, together with her team of volunteers, have achieved, not only in my eyes, but no doubt in the eyes of many who would love to thank her themselves, but are for one reason or another were unable to. Martyn Joseph, what can I say, other than to express my gratitude for how beautifully, expressively and with considerable meaning you have told the story of part of a continuous and worsening nightmare faced by so many. Every word and every musical note has indeed painted a perfect picture of truly sad and hurtful times with true meaning. I pray this song goes a long way to be enjoyed by many. Thank you.
I've been a big fan of Martyn Joseph
for 35 years and yet again he moves me to tears with this wonderful song
Every time my wife and I sit an audience at an MJ gig Tim I suffer an emotional overload.👍
Ditto!
Love this. A modern day Streets Of London
Thank GOD there are people who care about others and situations that befall them. GOD bless you all.
Stunning - pure class, reminiscent of the great singer songwriters. As Andrea says - incredible!
I just heard this for the first time today on the radio, stopped me in my tracks. Music really has so much power. Thank you Martyn Joseph for this masterpiece. Hopefully it will be heard by millions. 👏👏👏👏🏴
Only Martyn could wring such a song from this story. Been a fan of his since the days of 'Sunday over Cardiff' (do check out Martyn's early stuff), and what an outstanding human being is Andrea.
The beauty of Folk Music is its continuous storytelling about real people's lives over hundreds of years. Thank you for this wonderful initiative that yields such fine songwriting from Martyn, from a new fan in Canada . Well Done.
Got to see him in Chicago a while back !
Such a beautiful song and agree that this should be played until the government actually listens to and understands the meaning of the words. Humanity is so important and the fact we are one of the richest countries in the world and we need to have soup kitchens and food banks. Thank you Martin Joseph for your most amazing song, wonderfully played which has touched all our hearts.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you to Andrea and Martyn and all of those providing "a cup of love" all over the UK and the world.
well done BBC maybe this will shame the complacency of this Government
So good, Martyn. Thank you for giving voice to such a good cause.
Martyn Joseph is one of my very favourite songwriters. Such a beautiful song, but also exasperating that he has to write one such as this.
I was just getting out of my car when this song came on the radio it made me cry as it touched my soul. When I got home I searched the radios play list to find the song and listen on here. As I watched the video and the lady from Sunderland shed a tear my heart was with her nd I cried again. That is the beauty of real music it touches your soul, i shouldn’t presume but I’ll bet that lady felt the song had been written for her. Brilliant writing and playing
“That’s my job, but what you do is far more important.” Typically modest but I would suggest Martyn is wrong. By telling the story maybe more people will be inspired to show the compassion of this wonderful woman and her volunteers.
I just heard this on Jeremy Vine on Radio 2 - incredibly moving, and what a wonderful woman and team.
Martyn at his best, as always. Brilliant song 🤗🫂
Just broke down when I heard this for the first time, now I feel so much joy. This is so resonant of the streets and all the wonderful carers. The Angel of a person Andrea Bell and her kind people. xx
This is such a stunning piece of music
MJ is one of the greatest singer/songwriters of our generation.I can honestly say that I listen to his music most days of my life.He has been an inspiration to me from the very first time I sat in his audience 👍
Beautiful song, I'm notfrom Sunderland but know of places like this in my home town of swindon, once a year I do a sleepout for the homeless having been homeless myself, I want to thank all those that do their level best to help their communities in this case the lady the song is for and martyn whata tribute, I love folk music you have an amazing voice, do you havea facebook page or anything of the like? Would love to hear moreofyour stuff.
Matty my wife and I met Martyn many years ago and I can honestly say that he is one off the greatest singer/songwriters of our generation. But more than that he is the most humble, kind ,compassionate person who you could ever wish to meet.He is so much more than just a guy with a guitar and you need to put him on your bucket list to see live . PS good start is to watch utube videos.Through his music and his humanity he has made a positive difference to my life without a doubt.
What a song. What a tribute. Worthy.
"Songs take time to seep in." I've come back to this video multiple times since it was released just 4 days ago. Each time it has brought me close to tears, and each time I've picked out a facet of it that I didn't hear on previous listens. As others have observed, it's sad that in a country that considers itself modern and civilized, with a well established social support network that should be available to all, people still end up in need of help from Andrea and those like her who give a "cup of love" so generously.
Please release this as a single, Think of the money raised to keep helping this great place and people. Well done everyone involved.
What a great song! What a great cause!
i never heard of this until my mum with dementia had it on the tv and i like it alot and its good music and honest and heart warming. it is the truth and wish more could hear it.
I’ve just heard this on radio 2 and it’s a very beautiful song and what a voice.
I heard an extract of this song on Radio 4 news at 1.00. I was blown away. Couldn’t find it on Spotify etc Just found it on RUclips. It’s unbelievable, beautiful melody, great guitar accompaniment and the words say it all. Well done Martyn. John G
Wow. just wow.
Will be number 1 next week, you watch. And deservedly so.
Absolutely beautiful. Just heard this on the radio and I filled up.
I thought it was Bruce Springsteen.
Wonderful song for a special lady. Great start to the day 💙
This song, this voice, this guitar ❤
It's an amazing song for an equally amazing person and her friends. I was lucky enough to see him perform it this evening at his show in Sevenoaks.

So fitting to so many charitable people in this world "God is good "

Just amazing! How do we get this song on the charts?? I have no experience but it belongs up there , if not just to raise awareness of this amazing lady and her work
Caught the back end of this performance on JV today whilst at work and it made me pause to listen, had to find it to here it in full and beautiful lyrics , and I too am a blubbering wreck😂

Anthem for our times.
They played it in Radio 2 on my way home, I was blown away and had to google it when I got in. Fantastic 👍🏻👍🏻
Amazing song amazing story very special
Wow. What a lady and what an artist.
A little bit of me would like our elected ministers to have to sit in chamber, for a couple of days every week throughout the winter, with the lights down and the heating off, with only a soup kitchen/ on-the breadline lunch, to maybe just help them to sharpen their focus a bit ... Thank God for people like Andrea, and her team. They are the real heart and soul of the country...
Music is a mighty force that soothes a troubled world. Thank you, Martyn, for this beautiful song!
Beautiful - both the work and the song
Brilliant. I’ve seen him many times. 👏🏻
Absolutely beautiful song. His voice reminds me of Bruce Springsteen. The story behind it is so beautiful. Well done to Andrea and all at the Soup Kitchen x
He's often called the Welsh Springsteen :)
Martyn's lyrics are incredible. He paints a picture of such inequity in our society. This song is a beacon of hope for change! love this
I am speechless - not normal at all for an Italian lady, I love it, love it, love it and incredible as well where the performed....
Thanks to share with us -
Beautiful song! Just heard it on Ken Bruce’s show ❤

This short (5-part) series is one of the best radio programmes I have ever heard. Please God, another series...
Saw Martyn play Cardiff in 1988. Top man.
Stunning ❤️
That was so powerful Martyn, you're amazing
What a wonderful piece of music 🎶 This needs to be released as a single to help those who run and depend on "Albert's Place " ❤️
Just heard this on The Jeremy Vine show, An amazing song and an amazing woman and her team
Absolutely beautiful.
So moving but what great work on offer and a cup of love it's all that it's needed.
As Martyn tells us in his latest album ‘1960’ “the bottom line is love”👍
Absolutely awesome!!
Great voice - wonderful song - but the lady who is at the centre of this story is a saint!
Juste magnifique !
So gently!
Brilliant work, everyone. Thank you!
Wonderful Song
Amazing
I can sense some Bert Janch in this song along with a lttle David Crosby
How come I've only just heard your music age 65 when I've been listening to folk and playing accoustic guitar folk music since I was 10 or 12?!!!!🙂❤👍
You need to make up for lost time . Once you join the MJ train you will never want to get off.👍
@@robertreid9079 I plan to listen to almost everything if possible from what I’ve heard so far. I’ll have to limit myself or I’ll binge watch it then have nothing new to listen to on the long nights and days of being a wheelchair user in constant pain. For me new music i love is so thrilling!!😊👍❤️
@@jezzamarkham5285 I don’t know which part of the Country you live in or whether you are able to get out and see Martyn live.If you can you will leave the gig with a renewed belief in humanity. There are numerous utube videos which will give you an idea of the compassion and genuineness of MJ.I hope that you will be able to get some comfort from your pain,at least for a while whilst being entertained by one of the greatest singer/songwriters of our generation who offers so much more to this world than just his guitar.Happy listening ❤️🙏
@@robertreid9079 Thanks for the kind thoughts. I live in North Wales (far West if that helps😉?) Someone once said “you might as well live on a different planet” because of the travelling time get get near anywhere!!! I plan to watch a lot of youtube to hear Martyn’s wonderful and moving work.
I think seeing Martyn live is a bit hit and miss with my spine problems and location but i will listen out because music live is always best, especially folk. Take care and look after those nearest and dearest. 😊👍❤️
@@jezzamarkham5285 I believe Martyn was born in Penarth👍The first song we ever heard him play live, approx. 15/20 years ago ,was ‘Please Sir’ and living in Wales you will relate to its lyrics. We spent a memorable weekend in Neath with friends a few years ago to specifically see MJ in the land of his birth. A wonderful, wonderful, experience. If you look up his tour dates, hopefully you will be able to get to one of his gigs.Even if you get to meet him just the once you will not regret it. As a start to your journey of discovery with MJ watch any of his performances of ‘Cardiff Bay’. As Martyn often tells us we are not alone. Stay positive and never give up.👍
Wow...what a song and a voice!!!
Beautiful and moving
Très beau...belle mélodie belle voix...
Love this. Now I just need to learn how to play it ! Drop D I think 🤔
DADGAD
Great song. The Clip got me NGL. I thought it was JBP who was playing. XD
Anybody else go straight to Kevin Johnson's Rock & Roll I Gave You the Best Years of My Life from 1973 ?
Fabulous song for our times. Martin's been writing poignant songs for decades. So much need out there for tea and love.
Wonderful lady - Hw can we donate to her project
So beautiful and reminds me of Ralph McKellen Streets of London
McTell - yes, Martyn said on R2 he listened to that for inspiration.
The 2023 version of “Streets of London” sadly somethings remain the same
