These kids have now become young men and women and their musicality has blossomed close to perfection. I loved all the solos...the pianist is masterful. Joan Chamarro is a superman musically speaking. If there is sainthood in music he must be one! Never stop Joan!!
Luigi Grasso's sax licks are wonderfully delivered. He has excellent control of that instrument which can be difficult. The young soloists are so mature and professional...they have all pretty well mastered their instruments and have many years ahead to hone their talents. Joan Chamorro continues to do very important work in reviving jazz and big band sound. Love that he is going through the whole book of standards.
It must be very rewarding to make arrs ( this time Sergio Verges) for this band when the outcome is as great as this. Jan Domènech in piano is really stunning. Joan, great work as always!!!
Add 5:09 Jan quotes from "September in the Rain" [the music corresponding to the words "The leaves of brown came tumbling down" in that tune ]- both Joan and Luigi turn in recognition and admiration. This quoting fits the sense of the Quasimodo, as it comes from the bebop era, when soloists frequently skillfully interjected quotes from other tunes into their solos.
I think that I have finally identified the most outstanding characteristic of this unique talent mill, confidence, confidence to attack these difficult pieces without reservation or doubt.
Liked the arrangements, Liked the soloists [all of them!]. Was fascinated and enlightened to find out from one of the commentators that the tune is written to the chords of 'Embraceable You." After hearing the performance a few times, I tried singing "Embraceable You' along with the band (and it does fit). Listened again to the whole thing with Embraceable You in my head, - together it expanded the dimension of the performance for me. Great job by SAJB!
This is a great rendition and arrangement of the Charlie Parker standard. Joan Chamorro's young brass and reed soloists seem to get better and better every time. Jan Domènech's piano solo (starting with the first notes of Jobim's "Desafinado" 4:42 ), is simply genius. Moltes Gràcies, Joan !
My deep respect and admiration to you Joan and all the band members. just keep it and I hope that one day you guys can perform in Orlando Fl. I'll be on the front seat!
I have played this video a number of times, trying to establish why I seem to know the tune. Now, something has jogged my memory at last - I don't 'know' the tune in the way that I could sing it but I could sing Gershwin's 'Embraceable You' (pardon my voice) along with the recording. I knew that Charlie Parker had 'borrowed' other people's chord-sequences in this manner from time to time (and never returned them!!) but I guess I need to do some research to avoid being caught out again ! Jan Domènech inserts some interesting quotes into his solos occasionally ... this time listen out for 'Desafinado' and 'September in the Rain'.
Full Big Band sound cruising along - love it! Of all solos, a special pointer to Jan Domenech's splendid piano solo performance - rarely heard here. Not to forget the band in his company, in piano. And, at 7:17, to Victor's amusement, a "Luigi" bird and an "Andrea" bird chirp their interludes ;)
As great as the singing is, I love these all instrumentals as much or more, especially with all the solos by the kids. This was one of many great solos by Jan Domenech that night. This years version of that concert is just 3 weeks from tonight!
I have other opinion, he has no story to tell , many notes, but without any message. I have nothing against technics, but only when those notes are played there where you may play them and with any meaning or story. Sorry , I don't like his playing at all. Those young tenor saxos are soooo much better, much more musicality !
Such a pleasure to see and hear these youngsters, and Luigi Grasso knows they won't let him down, hence his regular appearences fronting the band. Exellent performance all round as usual. Mr Chamorro, tell me, is recording under way yet for Jazzing 8? - publication will no doubt be some way off but when it comes I shall be looking forward to every beat.
IT IS SUMMARIZED ON"JUST GREAT " !
Luigi seems to think that the ideas is to see how many notes he can cram into a solo. The kids have been taught that it is really how much feeling you get into the solo. I vote for the kids!
Alan, while I understand your criticism, I do not agree. Moreover, the very kids seem not to agree. Watch "After You've Gone" (sung by Eva F) to see how they honestly express an amazement at Luigi's play. And there is a good reason why Luigi got to Berklee as a young teenager, and - no less important - why he is featured in so many SAJB videos. Both sides must have enjoyed it a lot. Finally, check his bio. This guy has been working hard on his skill, on the theory, on the practical music making (playing in multiple constellations), and also - having himself benefitting from some educational programs - on paying forward by supporting young musicians in various ways. I happen to be amazed by his playing. My opinion, of course.
@@PumilateVFX Very simpe: That guy only wants to show how many notes he can play in a second, but he does not feel , he does not know what is music all about.Music is sentiment, feelings, emotions. Luigi needs some lessons with Scot Hamilton. Scott can easily demonstrate that it is not about how many notes you play. I like the kid's solos better, they say something and don't blow the mood.
Scott Hamilton is a midlle jazz saxophonist, Luigi is an alto be bop saxophonist. Two different styles, two different instruments, two different musics, two different eras. Luigi is pretty good in the Parker-Cannonball Adderley's style, in fact he is the best young alto appearing on the bop european jazz scene since a long time.
THE FIRST JAZZ PIECE OF 2022!!!👍👌👏 NEVER TIRED OF LISTENING!!!
BOY OH BOY I NEVER GET TIRED OF THIS UNIQUE VERSION PERFORMANCE OF QUASIMODO.GREAT MASTERY DUE TO JOAN CHAMORROS DIRECTION👏👏👏
Joan Mar Sauqué became a perfect jazz trumpet player, with ideas, sound, story to tell, rythm, articulation, etc... kuddos to his work !

My Bird's favorite !! Beautiful arrangement and chorus, thanks !!
All solos are swing with good tone. The arrangement swings with a mellow smoothness. Everyone makes this piece great.
We all love this and wish we were young again !!! :-) Let the music play !
,,, Gracias! Saludos.
Wow. What a perfect performance. And of course the solos: great, fearless and unpredictable, as they should be.
