No one ever remembers XL5. Such a fun show. I remember being in the car with my dad and saying ON THE WAY HOME all the time. Thunderbirds is my all time favorite but XL5 need more credit. Loved stingray too. I drew that sub in my notebook hundreds of times
Keith Fulkerson My thoughts exactly. CGI more than has its place, and I'll always defend that. But practical effects and real model sets are really amazing and I always love seeing them used.
There's something about the lighting and the verisimilitude that they haven't quite uniformly mastered with CG yet. Sometimes a CG model can look and feel hollow. Of course that varies between studios and animators, but it can be hard to replicate how light would react and cast shadows in a CG environment.
I really like when different techniques are used alongside each other so that at any given time, it's not clear whether it's CG, practical, or some combination. If done well, a filmmaker is then not limited by any one technique.
A few years ago I might've agreed but by now CGI is at a point where most people won't even notice that it's there (as long as enough money is put into it), but I too think that miniatures and models should still be a thing, it'll definitely help cast and crew to get a better feeling for the scenario and some sense of immersion that'll probably improve the quality of the production.
I went to Slough, UK when I was a kid. Luckily went around where they made some of the Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Joe 90 stuff. It was the Stingray bits that fascinated me then. The underwater sequences were filmed looking through a fish tank. My brother fell into the pit where they did the snow scenes... Just some memories. Thanks

Another thing that would've been good to mention to show just how innovative and creative Weta Workshops is is that they actually use a lot of rubbish and that sort thing to create their bigatures. Thunderbirds Are Go bigatures even include things like bottles looking like tanks, e.g.. They use anything they can get their hands on to the best of their abilities.

I did this tour the week before Christmas. It's expensive for what you get, but nothing's quite like seeing this sort of work in person, for real, up close. Can't touch (naturally, they don't want the hordes breaking stuff) and no photos (so no selfies with Tracy Island). But to see those models in person and just see the detail that went in. People's souls went into this. Also fun to realize they are building these out of just random stuff. One of the sets I recognized standard electrical conduit and fittings, others had plumbing parts, bits of kitchen utensils. On their own they are just boring mundane everyday items. They turn them into these amazing models. It's certainly way more than the sum of its parts. If you visit New Zealand and Wellington, do it. Both the tours Weta run. (They take you through the main model shop too.) Even easy to get to by bus from Central Wellington, you don't need to hire a car or take a taxi.
One of the greatest moments of my life was pulling the TB2 runway leaver 💚 highly recommend if any fans find themselves in Wellington, New Zealand, do the TB tour at Weta workshop 😀
First: I loved the original Thunderbirds... and I will check the new ones... Second: Even if it is not movie related, I would love to see Adam visiting and checking out the "Miniatur Wunderland" (MiWuLa) in Hamburg, Germany...
I love how the base of The Hood's ship is a (fairly recognizable) Dyson vacuum. A wonderful homage to the lemon squeezer in the original TB1 launch bay.
I was just going about my daily business one morning when I got a fab life imitating art bolt of lightning. There ahead of me on the tube platform was The Hood! Shiny bald pate, shifty looks, even similar garb. For once in my life I actually managed to get the phone camera up and at 'em and fired off a couple of gooduns without the evil git noticing. To top it all off, I sent them to the kids phones as they were en route to school. Reports of loud gasps did I get that eve. Pity the seven year old because his age is all about blurring fact and fiction and now his mum's cross with me because evil has instantly become real and really close so he gets no sleep. Character building we used to be able to say.
I loved Gerry Anderson's works. I used to watch Lavender Castle as a kid and was recently reminded of the show by my best friend who also happened to have watched it :D
I studies model making at Medway College of Art and Design 35 years ago and one of my lecturers was Mr John Wylie whom was a model maker on the original Thunderbirds series and his house was full of old props from the series.
I don't think miniatures will make a comeback because all too often the VFX directors have a vested interest in CGI. I have a saying that they get directors to swallow the 'digital' pill and once that happens it's a very slippery slope of 3D computer generated stuff flooding a production.
I was part of a group of arround 15 adults and teenagers who did the kit bashing for the inside of the large scale hanger. We got the opertunity due to being in a model building club down the road from weta where one of our top modelers were an animator there
Anyone notice the back of the deck chairs in the two scales (around the pool) are a different design. One has a simple arm that hold up the back of the chair in the larger scale and in the smaller scale it is a more complex system.
I really hope filmmakers (and more importantly producers) will realise that miniatures really bring something extra to a shot. You can't fake reality as well with CG as you can with miniatures. :) They are like vinyl records, easily discarded when digital came along but now the quality that analogue brings to the arts is being remembered and renewed. Lovely stuff.
The love and effort showen in this video is what conviced me to give TaG a watch and while yes, thing are different in the new show, the show is still defiinatley Thunderbirds.
Thunderbirds Are Go! is a great homage to Thunderbirds whilst being a great own series in its own right. The 'real' sets are a big deal of what makes Thunderbirds tick so a series wouldn't be a Thunderbirds series without that tangible reality. I love the detail that is in the TAG sets, they're so cool! Though my favourite detail is the in-joke that is the lemon squeezer in Thunderbird One's hanger! That made me laugh when I spotted that.
I somehow missed this the first time around. I was firmly convinced that everything in "Thunderbirds Are Go!" was CGI and am pleasantly surprised to find that the reboot of one of my favourite childhood shows ("Captain Scarlet" was another) is a hybrid production :)
There should be a competition show like Face-Off but with models. Different themes like castles and spaceships, different scales, different challenges with materials. Come on, that'd be the coolest ever
For anyone who has never worked on models of this scale, or who has never designed, built, and brought to fruition, a small scale WORLD like this, I really don't know WHAT to tell ya! I'm sure you appreciate it, but if ya haven't been there, give it a go, and TRY TO GO THERE!! Then you'll see and understand just how much this kind of work, is nothing short of MAGIC!!
awesome video guys, adams questions are really good hes an awesome interviewer. keep up the good work look forward to the next special feature. think i need to plan a holiday to new zealand now.

Some behind the scenes with the builders making stuff would be fantastic. There stuff is a work of art and a great tribute to the original series.
would love to see their take on space 1999
I want to see what they can do with Captain Scarlet.
I think the Spectrum-ish vehicles on the shelf may be a hint........ I hope.
BUGGER that would be awesome ... loved the space ships in that
.
or hw about the earth ship ark that was lost in space ... even
@@Outamyhead captain scarlet was remade in 2005 I was great
@@davidsmithamith2115 But that was all CGI. I do agree though, New Capt Scarlet was well done.
First: I loved the original Thunderbirds... and I will check the new ones... Second: Even if it is not movie related, I would love to see Adam visiting and checking out the "Miniatur Wunderland" (MiWuLa) in Hamburg, Germany...
I've also been to weta workshop, one of my favourite places on earth...
What an awesome group of super smart creative people!
I can't wait for this to be available on Vudu, Hulu or Netflix!
Brings back some good memories of the old series being reborn.
this is just absolutely incredible
That was amazing and I live not far from there, well 1600 Klms away in Sydney but I off to see that. Thanks Adam for showing this in my own backyard.
Weta Workshop never cease to astound me!!!
my childhood is geeking out right now brilliant ...
I would LOSE MY MIND if I got to visit this studio!!
Please show more of this! Damn that is amazing to see!
I was part of a group of arround 15 adults and teenagers who did the kit bashing for the inside of the large scale hanger. We got the opertunity due to being in a model building club down the road from weta where one of our top modelers were an animator there
There was a Thunderbird reboot? Boy, am I out to lunch...
Love these "sets"...
Anyone notice the back of the deck chairs in the two scales (around the pool) are a different design. One has a simple arm that hold up the back of the chair in the larger scale and in the smaller scale it is a more complex system.
woooooooooo New Zealand thank you for coming
I really hope filmmakers (and more importantly producers) will realise that miniatures really bring something extra to a shot. You can't fake reality as well with CG as you can with miniatures. :) They are like vinyl records, easily discarded when digital came along but now the quality that analogue brings to the arts is being remembered and renewed. Lovely stuff.
Love to see them remake Stingray. Seeing they have now remade Captain Scarlet and Thunderbirds.
Curious to see which way they would go with it
Some amazing work there! I really need to go up and have a look.
I'm going to go to Weta workshops
This guy is just lovely talking about his miniatures
Been on this Weta Workshop tour here in Wellington, it's just in a shed around the corner from my flat. Very low key, but impressive, as us Kiwi's are
Adam should visit the guys that made the Red Dwarf miniatures. That'd be great to see!!
How do they keep the dust off these?

00:53 OMG! Unimaginable wealth, $88 BBQ-grill from WalMart. And Adam's obscure Spinal Tap reference at 2:44. BRILLIANT!
9:13 And you'd be right Mr Man, Thunderbird 2 is the best one by far.
She's just so versatile and her kids are cool. ^_^
I somehow missed this the first time around. I was firmly convinced that everything in "Thunderbirds Are Go!" was CGI and am pleasantly surprised to find that the reboot of one of my favourite childhood shows ("Captain Scarlet" was another) is a hybrid production :)
Aw man, this is sooo interesting!
I grew up with the THUNDERBIRDS! Nice Work here!
I love and still watch the shows on RUclips. Can you find out why the ships were so dirty.
Amazing! Miniatures are always better than CGI for sets. CGI characters and vehicles work well.
I hope it gets more series to the show.
awesome video guys, adams questions are really good hes an awesome interviewer. keep up the good work look forward to the next special feature. think i need to plan a holiday to new zealand now.
