I think that if you were never a thunderbirds fan (and for that you need to be pretty seriously old) - then it would probably be OK. But for those of us who went into the movie theater, hoping to see what we loved - it was a total travesty. Just a horrible mangling of something very precious. Doing it with live action could have been OK - the upgraded thunderbird craft were excellent - but the plot was just unspeakably horrible...and I thought they were disrespectful of the original characters too. My son and I staggered out of the movie theater in a daze...how the hell could they have spent so much money making something so awful?

I expected changes to hardware but Alan was never a snotty petulant teenager, and Jeff would never leave Tracy Island without John or Scott being there to deputise. The Hood wasn't scary, and TinTin suddenly gained superpowers. Neither Jeff nor the other brothers had any real part in the movie, it was baby Alan, baby TinTin and a new baby called Fermat. Lady Penelope and Parker were good, though .
I love how subtle Allan's arc actually is. He goes from dreaming of flying the really fast and iconic thunderbird 1 to earning his stripes in the slightly more "boring" thunderbird 4, but actually saves people in it, rather than nearly ruining everything
You pretty much captured my exact thoughts and feelings on this movie. I'm a lifelong fan of the original series, so my Dad taking me to see this in the cinema when I was 8 remains one of my most cherished memories. I actually really enjoy Thunderbirds Are Go (2015) as well, and really appreciate how much it lifts from this movie, despite predominantly sticking closer to the original. On the subject of what a potential sequel could've been, the ending of this film always left me wondering what IR were gonna do about the Hood now knowing everything about them. So I've decided to turn that question into a little fan comic to celebrate this movie's 20th anniversary this year! 😊 Really awesome video, man. Will definitely be checking out more! ❤
Doubt you’ll see this now 2 years late but the thunderbirds movie from 2004 has been my undeniable favourite movie since it came out , I’m 20 now and still watch it every so often and I will keep doing so , I truly hope they make another thunderbirds movie some day in the future to carry on from where the 2004 movie finished

Channel 73 yeah but its kinda funny because each time I would watch it, I always felt like it was just some kind of two-part special for a amazing tv show but they packaged it as a movie. Still it had a very positive impact on my childhood!
I was born 2 years after the movie- I saw another version first [the 2015 one] and actually came back to watch this one, which is probably why I find it much easier to dislike.
I really like the 2004 film! Yes a good number of fans don't, and i can see why but as you say it's not trying to be the 1960's show. It's taking inspiration, which it did, and modernized it a bit but not in a pushy way, i think it was done appropriately. I was born in the mid 90's, and when i seen this film in the cinema i loved it, and even now i love it, maybe in some ways more so because i get such a 00's nostalgia from it. You can tell based on the interactions between the cast, the slang, and the way the characters speak is very much of that 00's style. I loved it for that because you could connect to it as a kid growing up around that time. I have to say the CGI is impressive even by today's standards, i agree also the sets were incredible, and the fact they made a story of the Hood cornering all of the IR members up in Thunderbird 5, and that line ''who will rescue the rescuers?'' was clever. It hinged on Alan taking responsibility for the very thing his father, and his brother's questioned him for? Was he good enough to be a Thunderbird? And he proved that tenfold by saving his father, going after the Hood, and saving lives in the Thames. It's a clever plot, and the cast was done really well. I have to also add Bill Paxton was an amazing Jeff Tracy, and i just want to stress also hearing about his death really impacted me. Bill Paxton was someone i grew up with with my childhood movies such as Titanic, of course Thunderbirds, and Spy Kids 2. R.I.P. Bill. You were one of the best

I wss quite young when the film came out, so as a child i eeally loved it and introduced me to the tv show and subsequent movies, ive since watched the live action film again, as an adult, and while can see major problems with it and the lack of connection to the source material is frustrating, i still really enjoyed it and love its slightly campy but clever feel
I was 4 years old in 1965 when this Big little show blew the Woodentops and Andy Pandy out of the water, and my life changed forever. It's hard for me to imagine anyone more in love with this show - and yet I just could not fathom the hatred against the 2004 (seriously? it's um, a movie) It wasn't primarily designed for me, and I loved every single second. A lot of love went into this movie. And my three pre teens, who up till then routinely laughed at "dad's dumb old puppets", were suddenly converts and fanatics - of both 2004 And 1965 ! And, still are ! What goes around, comes around, and in all things, there's good where you want to look for it... Great review, and nice to hear some well deserved positivity - thank you !
2:12-2:23 This is actually why I've come here as I too have not been the biggest fan of the 2004 film compared to classic Thunderbirds. But after recently reading Thunderbirds reviews from the Security Hazard blog site and learning some interesting insights, I gave the film another watch and actually enjoyed it a bit better this time. As a Thunderbirds film, I'd still take the TV series over it. But I reckon watching it in its own right instead of comparing it to the series, I don't think it's that bad. I'm currently watching through the modern Thunderbirds Are Go series as I've not really been giving that much of a chance either. I'm enjoying that too so far. RIP Bill Paxton

This movie introduced me to the Thunderbirds, so I can't dislike it either. I like it too. My only complaint, was how much Thunderbird 5 suffered in the movie, and I would've really appreciated it if they included a scene in the credits where it was being repaired. Because I don't like the fact that it was just left in its damaged state. Maybe they could receive the film as a miniseries. Soemthing that can give it a chance to grow and flourish. Preferably without Thunderbird 5 being blown to smithereens. Leave a like if you agree.

YES! I am 15 and just like you I am also a die hard thunderbirds fan who also grew up watching the original series (city of fire is the best one) and also the 3 new episodes which I also got from the crowd funding. To this day, I still enjoy watching the original thunderbirds and other Gerry Anderson productions such as Captain Scarlett and Joe 90. When I saw this movie, I wholly enjoyed it and just loved the same vehicles and characters in a large blockbuster movie. Yes it is different to the original and of course there will always be disappointment when there is a new version/ reboot of a popular series as it can never live up to expectations but I still love this film and especially the amazing score by Hans Zimmer (especially the new take on the main theme)! This was such a great video, you literally sum up everything I feel towards this film. Keep up the great content! 👍
Channel 73 me too i m a hard fan of Thunderbirds serie and even being born 1997 i grew up with it, the first episode i watch was the one about red arrow in 2000, and i also watch the movie wich i love too and found it very good despite his few flaws and i found it very much better than the original serie on how and why the hood wanted to destroy international rescue and also love the soundtrack made by zimmer
Definitely a fan, have appreciated Thunderbirds since being a kid, and as a screenplay writer I’d love to explore these characters and circumstances! For me personally, I feel if a modern adaptation of the Thunderbirds were to take place, I’d love to see the focus centre on not just Alan, but the brothers themselves. People KNOW the story of the Thunderbirds, and the basics can easily be explained in a montage, but take the Thunderbirds themselves away from the brothers, and WHO ARE THEY, WHAT DO THEY STAND FOR, WHATS THEIR INDIVIDUALITY? Use this in a movie concept, by taking the brothers away from the ships, and show what makes them both themselves, and International Rescue, and show their abilities and nature whilst journeying back to their ships to solve a looming problem/danger. And separating the brothers from Jeff also allows development for him alone with the audience, to truly grasp where the brothers got the influence and look to.
I actually liked that. If the Hood has natural psychic abilities then it's entirely feasible that at least some of his relatives would too. "Evil uncle" has always been a staple of fiction. For example look at Arcane in "Swamp Thing."
I really wish that we could of gotten a sequel to this film. Just as long as a main plot point was Alan evolving from the pilot of Thunderbird 4 like he was at the end of the film to the pilot of Thunderbird 3. And I mean, let's be honest, I get people being upset at him being TB4's pilot at the end but it makes sense, and I always felt like a sequel would have fixed that. The only birds he has experience with are TB1 and TB4, and from what the film implies it seems Gordon is the pilot of both TB4 and TB3 when Jeff isn't around, and TB4 would be significantly easier and less risky to operate than TB3, and he's a freaking teenager. For a sequel I would have involved Thaddeus Stone in it like the cancelled 90's film that led to this one and have Alan's main goal, other than saving lives, to become TB3's main pilot, and through circumstance have him be the only one who can operate TB3, like as a reward for his hard work and Alan's skills in the TB3 simulators Jeff could give Alan the chance to be the co-pilot of TB3 with Gordon as the main pilot, except he gets injured during a rescue and Alan ends up proving his skills as it's pilot throughout the film.
I grew up on this film and it will always have a place in my heart. I find myself not being able to watch the original series because I just can’t seem to enjoy things from many years back. I have an extremely short attention span which probably doesn’t help

I consider the 2004 film a guilty pleasure. I know that it should have been about the Tracy family and not "Spy Kids" as well as other things. But by god, I have fond memories of watching it at the cinemas! I do enjoy watching it. The score is fantastic and the Busted song was the icing on the cake (big fan)! That being said, I really hope that a theatrical reboot of the live-action film could be made. I feel it could work. Things would be much different now than back in the 00s.
As a kid this was my favourite movie. I was and I'm still a big fun of airplanes. When I was about 5-11 I also one of my dreams was to be a pilot. We were living in the Netherlands far from my home (Hungary), and I was going to an international special education school (because I am an autistic...), where we were sometimes watch movies what our teachers were bringing in the school for us. And one of my teacher had this movie on dvd, and bring it to the school for us sometimes. I was about 8-9 years old when we first watched the movie in the school (before that I've never seen the original series... this was the first Thunderbirds for me), and it was for a few times when I was there. This movie fascinated me mainly by my childhood dreams (to be a pilot...), and my passion for airplanes... I was already fascinated by the dvd menu... There are cool plains in it, and the main characters are children who fly these planes... space... I always wanted to watch this movie in the school (first I was always calling it "the airplanes movie"...), it was my favorite. I was frustrated because I didn't see it in my main language (hungarian), but some after that we've download it at home in my main language... And I still like it. And it is very nostalgic too... :D (sorry if my english isn't perfect, I'm hungarian)

I wanted to be a thunderbird when this movie came out my sister and I got the dvd and we'd watch it over and over again. And I still think it holds up, it was a brilliant homage to the thunderbirds ❤️

This movie is honestly goated I love it so much I recall the dvd menu was outstanding It was the cockpit for one of the Thunderbirds which you could switch out for another (and the fab1) And if you had the disc in a console (in my case the Xbox 360) you could move the cockpit around as if you where flying the Thunderbirds It blew my mind when I was younger
A bit late, but finally someone else that can appreciate the film. I honestly thought I was the only one. The film yes isn't the original series but as you said was never meant to be. It was meant to exist in the 21st century and appeal as such not the cold war 60's. I saw the original series after the film and this movie brought me to the franchise. Would love to see a second one
Im 17 and grew up watching the original series and I was overjoyed when I watched this movie for the first time (still watch it occasionally for old times sake) it does bring life to parts of the story that isn't explored with the original. and seeing machines look more than just models with smoke coming out of them is nice. not that I don't like the puppets and models
You’ve got two lovers of Thunderbirds here. Out of the three movies this one I think is the most enjoyable, and hasn’t got huge boring fillers, wanting you to find the remote to speed these parts along. I loved how they worked in puns from when Thunderbirds was puppet based. When they did puppet on the a string, could even put say about the lot who took Thunderbirds to the stage. It’s sad they didn’t make another movie, I thought that the one made in 2004, was a start of series of movies. Let’s meet everyone, the dynamics of the family, and enemies. As you thought the next would be more about rescues. There would have been complaints if they made a movie without doing so. Saying that children hadn’t seen Thunderbirds. I found someone even doing Fanfic, very good Fanfic, the writer started after the movie. Criminally Charmed, or CC to her fans did extremely good job at writing different series, but especially Thunderbirds. As for calling themselves Thunderbirds not IR, they said the reason, people just called them that. We shorten everything now days, so it’s doable, not like when they made Thunderbirds. They even changed the uniforms as well because gone are the days that children dressing like a cadet is cool.
I haven't seen this movie since it came out and honestly I'm a bit scared of revisiting it but I will say that when it came out I had been devouring the original show on re runs on cable and was alreary a BIG Thunderbirds fan. I remember being so excited at the idea of a Thunderbirda film when I first heard of it. My whole family and I went and saw it in the theater and I remember my entire family and I loving the movie! I even bought some of the Thunderbirds toys based on this film. Oddly enough I live in the U.S. which I mention because I think it shows that Thunderbirds is a show that appeals to audiences everywhere.
im a MASSIVE life long Thunderbirds fan, and I agree with pretty much everything you said. Apart from the plot, I Live every aspect of the movie. the modernising of one of my most cherished tv shows was something i didn't know I wanted until I saw the movie. the vehicles looked INSANE and even the comman and control center with the big stylised photos I thought was epic.
My dad used to watch the classic series and I grew up watching it too, and when the movie came out I enjoyed it a lot. I can see the flews in the film (mostly some lackluster acting and script issues), but I still enjoy it and the original to this day.
This movie is just my childhood and re-watching it now I can definitely see the problems ( and before you think i haven't seen the originals, I have 12 volumes of the series including both movies and.... this one, So i can definitely say that the movie was fun and I actually really enjoyed Ben Kingsly and Bill Paxton (Rest In Piece) The hood was really smart, and intimidating for an antagonist. Bill Paxton is just awesome. But again i do see why people dislike it, It can be cheesy & awkward. But I can watch this with nostalgia and a smile on my face throughout.

I wanted to see more of the OG Thunderbirds crew in action instead of the movie being base around the youngest. They all looked so good and yet we were just tease. I didn't think the movie was that bad, just not where i wanted the focus to be.
I still love this movie and still like the busted song even today . Also I still my copy of movie on dvd . This next year will be 20th anniversary of this film aka 2024
yes king you're right!!! i think this movie did a great job of emphasising character relationships, i think there was a lot there in the contrast between brains & fermat's father-son-relationship which might have been percieved by alan as what he wants/deserves from his own relationship with his father and i think it was an interesting and kinda cute thing to include lol plus the de-aging of alan honestly FITS since he was so immature and honestly kind of irritating in the original series haha this version of him genuinely learns and grows more over this one film than puppet-alan does the whole time sdhfdsgsj (also like u said sophia myles as lady penelope is BEYOND iconic and a True Highlight of the experience her wardrobe is to die for)
in all seriousness, i loved this movie as a kid alongside the original series and accepting it's differences as its own version, and when seeing more recent opinions of it being terrible i was worried my positive feelings towards it were just nostolgia, but I was not disappointed when rewatching it the other week, its not the orignal series but its not trying to be and in its own bubble its a fantastic and well made movie with alot of entertainment value and a joy to see all those sets and practical effects as well as VFX that have stood the test of time.
I honestly loved this film when I was younger. They had a contract for 3 movies but sadly since the first one didn’t meet the expectations they cancels the other 2. But The things I would to find out what the plans were for the 2nd and 3rd film. It could honestly keep me up all night

In fact there's only like one shot in the movie I don't like and that was down to one actor needing another take rather than bad CGI
I love the original Thunderbirds, but I really love the movie too. I know that most people don't like it, and I can understand why. But I like it as an AU version of the show. More lighthearted and yet still with some gravitas.
Tbh the one thing I liked was Sophia Myles’ amazing performance as Lady Penelope. And the fact that through her and Parker’s fight they littered it with cartoon sound effects... that was admittedly charming 😂
It grew on me. Some may call it "Guilty Pleasure,"and I guess owning it on DVD and Digitizing it to my Hulu and Movies Anywhere library should speak for my affection for this misunderstood gem. I may have seen snippets of the Source Material, but the marionettes never really grew on me. The vehicles and the Private Island base did fascinate me. Also, my curiosity of other people's opinion of the film actually brought me to this channel. I'm a fan of films like the Iron Giant, Incredibles, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, The Rocketeer, The Shadow, The Phantom, Dick Tracy and those of similar ilk.
I loved this movie. I found that most of the characters (most notably Fermat and Alan) are quite relatable. I related well with them and loved seeing their arc kept progressing. I understand it strayed far from the source material but this was to make it an overall more enjoyable film. I love this movie through and through and it is still one of my favorite movies of all time.
As someone who never watched the original show, and can’t seem to get into it.(I feel it’s a mixture of my ADHD and a difference between 2000s kids version of entertainment and 60s kids version of entertainment), I really enjoyed this movie. I knew it was not the best script or story wise, even as a child but I really enjoyed it anyways. Hans Zimmers score is so fun to listen to.
I am one who likes this movie. I honestly haven't seen the original series but I did catch a few episodes of TB Are Go which is really good. I would've loved to see a sequel if maybe the movie did a lot better at the box office. And for having Bill Paxton in this all I can say is.......Rest in Peace Bill🙏🏾

I very much enjoyed this film. although I haven't seen it in many years I very vividly remember excitedly going to the cinema to see it when on holiday in Port Stevens over a decade and a half ago, me and my dad were the only ones in the theatre and the projectionist let us have a look out the back at all the machinery. looking at this review, evidently many jokes and bits of dialogue went over my head. I never thought of it as a bad movie, sure I can point out all the things that make it different to the TV series, but they're just that, 'different'. I actually don't really like the current Thunderbirds series probably mainly because the CGI characters make it feel a bit like everything else out there and I think that perhaps too many changes were made for it. I think this movie struck the right balance. P.S I would have really liked to have seen that 2005 series become a thing.
i did lots of CGI on this, anything with bubbles underwater, anything with zero gravity chaff, anything with rocket afterburners. had a couple of smokes and chats with frakes too. crap film, but not crap too. lol. for anyone interested in a career in special effects you haven't lived until you've spent six weeks animating bits of aluminium foil floating around bill paxton's noggin. i also did effects on blade II, resident evil I and the stallone dredd. on dredd i spent two weeks of 18 hour days for 24 frames of screen time....movies eh, no wonder they cost so much.
i also used to spend time at shepperton film studios, doing various odd jobs, and i helped out in a very small way on, what was it called? police patrol? a series that never took off about and alien policeman and his buddy, another gerry anderson series. while i was there i got to hang out on the thomas the tank engine set, which tickles people when i tell them.
great video. i do agree with you on it mostly, but for me it just feels a bit less than the sum of its parts. also, its a tragedy that bill Paxton didn't get more screen time as Jeff. damn did he sell that character. i looked through your back catalogue and have bookmarked your channel btw, you absolutely have the quality to match bigger channels.

I personally like the film a lot as I grew up with it and it introduced me to the classic series, but looking back on it, I see the reasons why people say it was pretty bad. You see, the main problems are that that it's fun at times and tedious at others, and aimed particularly at gadget-loving boys. It has some of the kid-power action sequences of Spy Kids but none of that earlier film's charm and little of its humor and sweet message. The special effects were so heavily focused on that they'll distract the average ten-year-old. Not only that, but the script by William Osborne and Michael McCullers is... well, humorless and stilted. There's really no *good* way to put it. But don't get me wrong, I still love the film to pieces.
So glad that pit of peril gave you nightmares. I felt stupid towards my parents why turned ackwardly sadistic when they saw my fear. It was the one episode i couldnt handle as a kid. It also had to do with that scene which people get burned before International Rescue get in. They scream in a way "not for kids".

Hi Eddie, Nice piece on the movie and a thoughtful appreciation. I really loved the original series as a kid. Like you, I hated the 2003 movie the first time I saw it. It was a different tone and lacked the "gravitas" of the original. I mean, that announcer's voice... "Five... four... three... two... one... Thunderbirds are GO!" got you all ready for the action. As you discuss at length, there are "hits" and "misses" in the movie but overall it's a fun ride. In a way, "Thunderbirds" is a property that doesn't translate well to today's less innocent times in which there are no secrets and everyone is under surveillance. It was a lot easier in 1964 to take that willing suspension of disbelief that they Tracys could keep their identities secret. Nowadays it just strains all credulity. As far as casting I agree that Sylvia Miles and Ron Cook stole the movie. I had a crush on the "puppet" Lady Penelope and found her portrayal just as appealing. I loved Bill Paxton in "Apollo 13" and especially "Big Love," but Johnathan Frakes would have been SO much better as Jeff Tracy. A very young Vanessa Hudgens is adorable as Tintin. Anthony Edwards brings his "Revenge of the Nerds" cred to the character of Brains. Ben Kingsley puts in the worst performance with his ham-handed portrayal of The Claw. I kept thinking, "THIS is the actor who won the Oscar for GHANDI?" Guess he needed a payday. To me the coolest thing about the movie is the 21st century CGI renderings of those wonderful machines that are, after all, the real stars of "Thunderbirds."

Totally agree with your opinions on Thunderbirds living in the US, I’ve just now discovered them and have been watching them. Does the stutter of brains would never happen. Anybody with his intellect and IQ would very easily be able to think around his stutter by age 12 at latest. Thing is most people know what word they’re going to stutter on and can think around it as shown in your example and would’ve never done the stuttering part. Trust me, I know firsthand.
I would realy like to see another try of making a new movie from this series. But with more finesse in the optics and jokes (like the original ones) and more dedicated to the "old" fans but with enough room for new fans to come in. With less american cringe so to speak.
As I grew up I watched the original series then the movie came out and I enjoyed it. While everyone I know thinks it was a terrible movie I still like it to this day. The reboot Thunderbirds are go 2015 also was another of my favorite.
Wasn't too keen on the Fermat character. Didn't think he was necessary, but still enjoyed the movie. Having the music consistent with the original score was not only smart but necessary. I especially love the updated theme played in the Thunderbirds Are Go series.

I think that if you were never a thunderbirds fan (and for that you need to be pretty seriously old) - then it would probably be OK. But for those of us who went into the movie theater, hoping to see what we loved - it was a total travesty. Just a horrible mangling of something very precious. Doing it with live action could have been OK - the upgraded thunderbird craft were excellent - but the plot was just unspeakably horrible...and I thought they were disrespectful of the original characters too. My son and I staggered out of the movie theater in a daze...how the hell could they have spent so much money making something so awful?

The Hood wasn't scary, and TinTin suddenly gained superpowers.
Neither Jeff nor the other brothers had any real part in the movie, it was baby Alan, baby TinTin and a new baby called Fermat.

I love how subtle Allan's arc actually is. He goes from dreaming of flying the really fast and iconic thunderbird 1 to earning his stripes in the slightly more "boring" thunderbird 4, but actually saves people in it, rather than nearly ruining everything

As one who watched the original and the 2004 movie, I liked the reimagining of the theme. It was refreshing to see a modernized version of the show.

i did CGI effects on this and i agree that the kit was great production design, even the rolls had character.
You pretty much captured my exact thoughts and feelings on this movie. I'm a lifelong fan of the original series, so my Dad taking me to see this in the cinema when I was 8 remains one of my most cherished memories. I actually really enjoy Thunderbirds Are Go (2015) as well, and really appreciate how much it lifts from this movie, despite predominantly sticking closer to the original.
On the subject of what a potential sequel could've been, the ending of this film always left me wondering what IR were gonna do about the Hood now knowing everything about them. So I've decided to turn that question into a little fan comic to celebrate this movie's 20th anniversary this year! 😊

Doubt you’ll see this now 2 years late but the thunderbirds movie from 2004 has been my undeniable favourite movie since it came out , I’m 20 now and still watch it every so often and I will keep doing so , I truly hope they make another thunderbirds movie some day in the future to carry on from where the 2004 movie finished

Channel 73 yeah but its kinda funny because each time I would watch it, I always felt like it was just some kind of two-part special for a amazing tv show but they packaged it as a movie.
Still it had a very positive impact on my childhood!
I was born 2 years after the movie- I saw another version first [the 2015 one] and actually came back to watch this one, which is probably why I find it much easier to dislike.

I really like the 2004 film! Yes a good number of fans don't, and i can see why but as you say it's not trying to be the 1960's show. It's taking inspiration, which it did, and modernized it a bit but not in a pushy way, i think it was done appropriately. I was born in the mid 90's, and when i seen this film in the cinema i loved it, and even now i love it, maybe in some ways more so because i get such a 00's nostalgia from it. You can tell based on the interactions between the cast, the slang, and the way the characters speak is very much of that 00's style. I loved it for that because you could connect to it as a kid growing up around that time. I have to say the CGI is impressive even by today's standards, i agree also the sets were incredible, and the fact they made a story of the Hood cornering all of the IR members up in Thunderbird 5, and that line ''who will rescue the rescuers?'' was clever. It hinged on Alan taking responsibility for the very thing his father, and his brother's questioned him for? Was he good enough to be a Thunderbird? And he proved that tenfold by saving his father, going after the Hood, and saving lives in the Thames. It's a clever plot, and the cast was done really well. I have to also add Bill Paxton was an amazing Jeff Tracy, and i just want to stress also hearing about his death really impacted me. Bill Paxton was someone i grew up with with my childhood movies such as Titanic, of course Thunderbirds, and Spy Kids 2. R.I.P. Bill. You were one of the best

I wss quite young when the film came out, so as a child i eeally loved it and introduced me to the tv show and subsequent movies, ive since watched the live action film again, as an adult, and while can see major problems with it and the lack of connection to the source material is frustrating, i still really enjoyed it and love its slightly campy but clever feel

I was 4 years old in 1965 when this Big little show blew the Woodentops and Andy Pandy out of the water, and my life changed forever. It's hard for me to imagine anyone more in love with this show - and yet I just could not fathom the hatred against the 2004 (seriously? it's um, a movie) It wasn't primarily designed for me, and I loved every single second. A lot of love went into this movie. And my three pre teens, who up till then routinely laughed at "dad's dumb old puppets", were suddenly converts and fanatics - of both 2004 And 1965 ! And, still are !

2:12-2:23 This is actually why I've come here as I too have not been the biggest fan of the 2004 film compared to classic Thunderbirds. But after recently reading Thunderbirds reviews from the Security Hazard blog site and learning some interesting insights, I gave the film another watch and actually enjoyed it a bit better this time. As a Thunderbirds film, I'd still take the TV series over it. But I reckon watching it in its own right instead of comparing it to the series, I don't think it's that bad. I'm currently watching through the modern Thunderbirds Are Go series as I've not really been giving that much of a chance either. I'm enjoying that too so far. RIP Bill Paxton

This movie introduced me to the Thunderbirds, so I can't dislike it either. I like it too. My only complaint, was how much Thunderbird 5 suffered in the movie, and I would've really appreciated it if they included a scene in the credits where it was being repaired. Because I don't like the fact that it was just left in its damaged state. Maybe they could receive the film as a miniseries. Soemthing that can give it a chance to grow and flourish. Preferably without Thunderbird 5 being blown to smithereens. Leave a like if you agree.

YES! I am 15 and just like you I am also a die hard thunderbirds fan who also grew up watching the original series (city of fire is the best one) and also the 3 new episodes which I also got from the crowd funding. To this day, I still enjoy watching the original thunderbirds and other Gerry Anderson productions such as Captain Scarlett and Joe 90. When I saw this movie, I wholly enjoyed it and just loved the same vehicles and characters in a large blockbuster movie. Yes it is different to the original and of course there will always be disappointment when there is a new version/ reboot of a popular series as it can never live up to expectations but I still love this film and especially the amazing score by Hans Zimmer (especially the new take on the main theme)! This was such a great video, you literally sum up everything I feel towards this film. Keep up the great content! 👍

Channel 73 me too i m a hard fan of Thunderbirds serie and even being born 1997 i grew up with it, the first episode i watch was the one about red arrow in 2000, and i also watch the movie wich i love too and found it very good despite his few flaws and i found it very much better than the original serie on how and why the hood wanted to destroy international rescue and also love the soundtrack made by zimmer

Definitely a fan, have appreciated Thunderbirds since being a kid, and as a screenplay writer I’d love to explore these characters and circumstances! For me personally, I feel if a modern adaptation of the Thunderbirds were to take place, I’d love to see the focus centre on not just Alan, but the brothers themselves. People KNOW the story of the Thunderbirds, and the basics can easily be explained in a montage, but take the Thunderbirds themselves away from the brothers, and WHO ARE THEY, WHAT DO THEY STAND FOR, WHATS THEIR INDIVIDUALITY?
Use this in a movie concept, by taking the brothers away from the ships, and show what makes them both themselves, and International Rescue, and show their abilities and nature whilst journeying back to their ships to solve a looming problem/danger. And separating the brothers from Jeff also allows development for him alone with the audience, to truly grasp where the brothers got the influence and look to.
I think separating Jeff from the boys was the main plot of the reboot of the original series Thunderbirds. Mainly season 3

I actually liked that. If the Hood has natural psychic abilities then it's entirely feasible that at least some of his relatives would too.
"Evil uncle" has always been a staple of fiction. For example look at Arcane in "Swamp Thing."

I really wish that we could of gotten a sequel to this film. Just as long as a main plot point was Alan evolving from the pilot of Thunderbird 4 like he was at the end of the film to the pilot of Thunderbird 3.
And I mean, let's be honest, I get people being upset at him being TB4's pilot at the end but it makes sense, and I always felt like a sequel would have fixed that. The only birds he has experience with are TB1 and TB4, and from what the film implies it seems Gordon is the pilot of both TB4 and TB3 when Jeff isn't around, and TB4 would be significantly easier and less risky to operate than TB3, and he's a freaking teenager.
For a sequel I would have involved Thaddeus Stone in it like the cancelled 90's film that led to this one and have Alan's main goal, other than saving lives, to become TB3's main pilot, and through circumstance have him be the only one who can operate TB3, like as a reward for his hard work and Alan's skills in the TB3 simulators Jeff could give Alan the chance to be the co-pilot of TB3 with Gordon as the main pilot, except he gets injured during a rescue and Alan ends up proving his skills as it's pilot throughout the film.

I grew up on this film and it will always have a place in my heart. I find myself not being able to watch the original series because I just can’t seem to enjoy things from many years back. I have an extremely short attention span which probably doesn’t help

I consider the 2004 film a guilty pleasure. I know that it should have been about the Tracy family and not "Spy Kids" as well as other things. But by god, I have fond memories of watching it at the cinemas! I do enjoy watching it. The score is fantastic and the Busted song was the icing on the cake (big fan)!
That being said, I really hope that a theatrical reboot of the live-action film could be made. I feel it could work. Things would be much different now than back in the 00s.
As a kid this was my favourite movie. I was and I'm still a big fun of airplanes. When I was about 5-11 I also one of my dreams was to be a pilot. We were living in the Netherlands far from my home (Hungary), and I was going to an international special education school (because I am an autistic...), where we were sometimes watch movies what our teachers were bringing in the school for us. And one of my teacher had this movie on dvd, and bring it to the school for us sometimes. I was about 8-9 years old when we first watched the movie in the school (before that I've never seen the original series... this was the first Thunderbirds for me), and it was for a few times when I was there. This movie fascinated me mainly by my childhood dreams (to be a pilot...), and my passion for airplanes... I was already fascinated by the dvd menu... There are cool plains in it, and the main characters are children who fly these planes... space... I always wanted to watch this movie in the school (first I was always calling it "the airplanes movie"...), it was my favorite.
I was frustrated because I didn't see it in my main language (hungarian), but some after that we've download it at home in my main language... And I still like it. And it is very nostalgic too... :D

It was the cockpit for one of the Thunderbirds which you could switch out for another (and the fab1)
And if you had the disc in a console (in my case the Xbox 360) you could move the cockpit around as if you where flying the Thunderbirds

It was meant to exist in the 21st century and appeal as such not the cold war 60's. I saw the original series after the film and this movie brought me to the franchise. Would love to see a second one

Im 17 and grew up watching the original series and I was overjoyed when I watched this movie for the first time (still watch it occasionally for old times sake) it does bring life to parts of the story that isn't explored with the original. and seeing machines look more than just models with smoke coming out of them is nice. not that I don't like the puppets and models
You’ve got two lovers of Thunderbirds here. Out of the three movies this one I think is the most enjoyable, and hasn’t got huge boring fillers, wanting you to find the remote to speed these parts along. I loved how they worked in puns from when Thunderbirds was puppet based. When they did puppet on the a string, could even put say about the lot who took Thunderbirds to the stage.
It’s sad they didn’t make another movie, I thought that the one made in 2004, was a start of series of movies. Let’s meet everyone, the dynamics of the family, and enemies. As you thought the next would be more about rescues. There would have been complaints if they made a movie without doing so. Saying that children hadn’t seen Thunderbirds.
I found someone even doing Fanfic, very good Fanfic, the writer started after the movie. Criminally Charmed, or CC to her fans did extremely good job at writing different series, but especially Thunderbirds.
As for calling themselves Thunderbirds not IR, they said the reason, people just called them that. We shorten everything now days, so it’s doable, not like when they made Thunderbirds. They even changed the uniforms as well because gone are the days that children dressing like a cadet is cool.
I haven't seen this movie since it came out and honestly I'm a bit scared of revisiting it but I will say that when it came out I had been devouring the original show on re runs on cable and was alreary a BIG Thunderbirds fan. I remember being so excited at the idea of a Thunderbirda film when I first heard of it. My whole family and I went and saw it in the theater and I remember my entire family and I loving the movie! I even bought some of the Thunderbirds toys based on this film. Oddly enough I live in the U.S. which I mention because I think it shows that Thunderbirds is a show that appeals to audiences everywhere.

im a MASSIVE life long Thunderbirds fan, and I agree with pretty much everything you said. Apart from the plot, I Live every aspect of the movie. the modernising of one of my most cherished tv shows was something i didn't know I wanted until I saw the movie. the vehicles looked INSANE and even the comman and control center with the big stylised photos I thought was epic.
My dad used to watch the classic series and I grew up watching it too, and when the movie came out I enjoyed it a lot. I can see the flews in the film (mostly some lackluster acting and script issues), but I still enjoy it and the original to this day.
I must say I really enjoyed watching the film every time (I have the DVD so it's cool)

This movie is just my childhood and re-watching it now I can definitely see the problems ( and before you think i haven't seen the originals, I have 12 volumes of the series including both movies and.... this one, So i can definitely say that the movie was fun and I actually really enjoyed Ben Kingsly and Bill Paxton (Rest In Piece) The hood was really smart, and intimidating for an antagonist. Bill Paxton is just awesome. But again i do see why people dislike it, It can be cheesy & awkward. But I can watch this with nostalgia and a smile on my face throughout.

I wanted to see more of the OG Thunderbirds crew in action instead of the movie being base around the youngest. They all looked so good and yet we were just tease. I didn't think the movie was that bad, just not where i wanted the focus to be.

yes king you're right!!! i think this movie did a great job of emphasising character relationships, i think there was a lot there in the contrast between brains & fermat's father-son-relationship which might have been percieved by alan as what he wants/deserves from his own relationship with his father and i think it was an interesting and kinda cute thing to include lol plus the de-aging of alan honestly FITS since he was so immature and honestly kind of irritating in the original series haha this version of him genuinely learns and grows more over this one film than puppet-alan does the whole time sdhfdsgsj
(also like u said sophia myles as lady penelope is BEYOND iconic and a True Highlight of the experience her wardrobe is to die for)
in all seriousness, i loved this movie as a kid alongside the original series and accepting it's differences as its own version, and when seeing more recent opinions of it being terrible i was worried my positive feelings towards it were just nostolgia, but I was not disappointed when rewatching it the other week, its not the orignal series but its not trying to be and in its own bubble its a fantastic and well made movie with alot of entertainment value and a joy to see all those sets and practical effects as well as VFX that have stood the test of time.
I honestly loved this film when I was younger. They had a contract for 3 movies but sadly since the first one didn’t meet the expectations they cancels the other 2. But The things I would to find out what the plans were for the 2nd and 3rd film. It could honestly keep me up all night

I love the original Thunderbirds, but I really love the movie too. I know that most people don't like it, and I can understand why. But I like it as an AU version of the show. More lighthearted and yet still with some gravitas.
Tbh the one thing I liked was Sophia Myles’ amazing performance as Lady Penelope. And the fact that through her and Parker’s fight they littered it with cartoon sound effects... that was admittedly charming 😂

Thunderbirds 2004 was my gateway to Thunderbirds thank to Shrek 2 dvd promo.
It grew on me. Some may call it "Guilty Pleasure,"and I guess owning it on DVD and Digitizing it to my Hulu and Movies Anywhere library should speak for my affection for this misunderstood gem. I may have seen snippets of the Source Material, but the marionettes never really grew on me. The vehicles and the Private Island base did fascinate me. Also, my curiosity of other people's opinion of the film actually brought me to this channel. I'm a fan of films like the Iron Giant, Incredibles, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, The Rocketeer, The Shadow, The Phantom, Dick Tracy and those of similar ilk.
I loved this movie. I found that most of the characters (most notably Fermat and Alan) are quite relatable. I related well with them and loved seeing their arc kept progressing. I understand it strayed far from the source material but this was to make it an overall more enjoyable film. I love this movie through and through and it is still one of my favorite movies of all time.
As someone who never watched the original show, and can’t seem to get into it.(I feel it’s a mixture of my ADHD and a difference between 2000s kids version of entertainment and 60s kids version of entertainment), I really enjoyed this movie. I knew it was not the best script or story wise, even as a child but I really enjoyed it anyways. Hans Zimmers score is so fun to listen to.

I very much enjoyed this film. although I haven't seen it in many years I very vividly remember excitedly going to the cinema to see it when on holiday in Port Stevens over a decade and a half ago, me and my dad were the only ones in the theatre and the projectionist let us have a look out the back at all the machinery. looking at this review, evidently many jokes and bits of dialogue went over my head. I never thought of it as a bad movie, sure I can point out all the things that make it different to the TV series, but they're just that, 'different'. I actually don't really like the current Thunderbirds series probably mainly because the CGI characters make it feel a bit like everything else out there and I think that perhaps too many changes were made for it. I think this movie struck the right balance. P.S I would have really liked to have seen that 2005 series become a thing.

i did lots of CGI on this, anything with bubbles underwater, anything with zero gravity chaff, anything with rocket afterburners. had a couple of smokes and chats with frakes too. crap film, but not crap too. lol.
for anyone interested in a career in special effects you haven't lived until you've spent six weeks animating bits of aluminium foil floating around bill paxton's noggin. i also did effects on blade II, resident evil I and the stallone dredd. on dredd i spent two weeks of 18 hour days for 24 frames of screen time....movies eh, no wonder they cost so much.
i also used to spend time at shepperton film studios, doing various odd jobs, and i helped out in a very small way on, what was it called? police patrol? a series that never took off about and alien policeman and his buddy, another gerry anderson series. while i was there i got to hang out on the thomas the tank engine set, which tickles people when i tell them.
I think this film is very cool, very funny, all the pokes at the original. VERY FUN MOVIE
This move still should had just one more sequel
This film isnt truth full to its source material but it makes it unique, it is a great film as many of us born before 2004 would have seen
great video. i do agree with you on it mostly, but for me it just feels a bit less than the sum of its parts. also, its a tragedy that bill Paxton didn't get more screen time as Jeff. damn did he sell that character.

I Never Knew this movie existed until Gerry Anderson primer's Thunderbird 6
I personally like the film a lot as I grew up with it and it introduced me to the classic series, but looking back on it, I see the reasons why people say it was pretty bad. You see, the main problems are that that it's fun at times and tedious at others, and aimed particularly at gadget-loving boys. It has some of the kid-power action sequences of Spy Kids but none of that earlier film's charm and little of its humor and sweet message.
The special effects were so heavily focused on that they'll distract the average ten-year-old. Not only that, but the script by William Osborne and Michael McCullers is... well, humorless and stilted. There's really no *good* way to put it.
But don't get me wrong, I still love the film to pieces.
So glad that pit of peril gave you nightmares. I felt stupid towards my parents why turned ackwardly sadistic when they saw my fear.
It was the one episode i couldnt handle as a kid.
It also had to do with that scene which people get burned before International Rescue get in. They scream in a way "not for kids".

No matter how many times you watch it, if you’re a fan of Gerry Anderson’s Thunderbirds, HOW can you claim to be a Thunderbirds fan and say that this abortion should be appreciated? If the creator of the franchise of the product you’re adapting refuses to be part of it, and goes on to call it the “biggest load of crap” they’ve ever seen says it all really
I do have one problem with the "Thunderbirds Are Go" by Busted. the spaceship comes out of the guest house. the Hypersonic first response ship came out of the pool
They did use a little creative license with that line.

Nice piece on the movie and a thoughtful appreciation. I really loved the original series as a kid. Like you, I hated the 2003 movie the first time I saw it. It was a different tone and lacked the "gravitas" of the original. I mean, that announcer's voice... "Five... four... three... two... one... Thunderbirds are GO!" got you all ready for the action. As you discuss at length, there are "hits" and "misses" in the movie but overall it's a fun ride.
In a way, "Thunderbirds" is a property that doesn't translate well to today's less innocent times in which there are no secrets and everyone is under surveillance. It was a lot easier in 1964 to take that willing suspension of disbelief that they Tracys could keep their identities secret. Nowadays it just strains all credulity.
As far as casting I agree that Sylvia Miles and Ron Cook stole the movie. I had a crush on the "puppet" Lady Penelope and found her portrayal just as appealing. I loved Bill Paxton in "Apollo 13" and especially "Big Love," but Johnathan Frakes would have been SO much better as Jeff Tracy. A very young Vanessa Hudgens is adorable as Tintin. Anthony Edwards brings his "Revenge of the Nerds" cred to the character of Brains. Ben Kingsley puts in the worst performance with his ham-handed portrayal of The Claw. I kept thinking, "THIS is the actor who won the Oscar for GHANDI?" Guess he needed a payday.
To me the coolest thing about the movie is the 21st century CGI renderings of those wonderful machines that are, after all, the real stars of "Thunderbirds."
I'm a die hard Thunderbirds fan I grew up with the original series I loved the movie I'm 22 and I still watch the og series I also watch the series Thunderbirds are go which is awesome and I love the series movies Thunderbirds are go and Thunderbird 6 as always Thunderbirds are go

Totally agree with your opinions on Thunderbirds living in the US, I’ve just now discovered them and have been watching them. Does the stutter of brains would never happen. Anybody with his intellect and IQ would very easily be able to think around his stutter by age 12 at latest. Thing is most people know what word they’re going to stutter on and can think around it as shown in your example and would’ve never done the stuttering part. Trust me, I know firsthand.
I would realy like to see another try of making a new movie from this series.
But with more finesse in the optics and jokes (like the original ones) and more dedicated to the "old" fans but with enough room for new fans to come in.
With less american cringe so to speak.

As I grew up I watched the original series then the movie came out and I enjoyed it. While everyone I know thinks it was a terrible movie I still like it to this day. The reboot Thunderbirds are go 2015 also was another of my favorite.
Ford Fab 1 looks so different to the Rolls-Royce fab 1 in the original series
Wasn't too keen on the Fermat character. Didn't think he was necessary, but still enjoyed the movie. Having the music consistent with the original score was not only smart but necessary. I especially love the updated theme played in the Thunderbirds Are Go series.
