Googling rare genetic diseases I found one that matches the symbology: Fragile X syndrome. It's a disease that gives slight mental disability while having little influence on the appearance. It makes people shy, hyperactive, have short attention span, gives them social anxiety. It makes sense to me. Her personality fits. But I might be wrong. I just tried to analyze the "puzzle" :)

As for tattoos...I have a Celtic spiral butterfly on my upper back and I absolutely LOVE it!!! I could go on all day about the symbolism of it but Mai the it's about how everything in life comes full circle and butterflies are significant for rebirth and change.
