This is why I adore counterspell wizard duels. You have these masters of the arcane, who can reshape the weave of reality at will, using impossible arcane mathematics to nullify each other's magics. The speed, precision, and prowess is staggering to consider. And to any outside observer, it just looks like a few nerds waving their arms around with nothing happening.
I like to imagine this kind of scenario like how magic is depicted in the Wheel of Time series, the mages can see the magic as it forms and lash out to destroy the spell before it's complete, knives of quintessence cutting each other apart as the original caster desperately defends his creation, but in the end his strength fails, and then, so does his spell. And all the onlookers see only frantic gesticulation and rapid fire incantation. How many epic duels were fought, how many towns saved from oblivion, thanks to some strange old people shaking their sticks at one another with no outward effect?
This is actually posible in tje early editions of Yugi-Oh where a card called "Fake Trap", it could be activated when a trap of yours was targeted from a spell or effect. A little trivia so now you now xD

I would agree that generally creatures can't cast a counterspell on their turn, however if the DM is playing each head as seperate entities (which heck yes do it) it could have a reaction on "its" turn. Returning for a final edit: Reactions can be used at any time if theres a trigger. You only get one per round, you can cast a spell as your action and counterspell as a reaction in the same "stack" (as mtg people would say).
How does that work though? She can cast a spell as an action...in the same turn counterspell a counterspell? Did your DM allow the casting of multiple spells in a turn? I mean I know counterspell can be cast as a reaction but can you do that during an action.

You see thin tendrils of pure arcane energy shoot forth from her hand, reaching out to pick at the edges of his construct of thought and elemental chaos. As she carefully defuses the spell, you see that it will soon collapse in on itself as it begins to fade. Panicking, he whips his free hand around, dropping his spell book so that he may deal with her intrusion into his wheel house. Similar tendrils zip from his hand to intercept her own, severing their hasty connection to the weave and repairing the loose strands of magic trailing from his spell. As her spell struggles to keep its strength and finish its mission, your bardic friend grins. With a discordant strum of the lute, the bard sends forth a wave of divine disruption that severs his counterattack. The damage is done, and the initial threat is rendered inert as you see the arcane forces straighten out. You can briefly see them return to their original shape before fading from sight. @@SophiaAphrodite you actually can. If that was the case, "Shield" would be a useless spell. They addressed it in Sage's Advice "Can you also cast a reaction spell on your turn? You sure can! Here’s a common way for it to happen: Cornelius the wizard is casting fireball on his turn, and his foe casts counterspell on him. Cornelius has counterspell prepared, so he uses his reaction to cast it and break his foe’s counterspell before it can stop fireball." Thematic wise think of it like this, Reactions aren't used UNTIL something happens...I cast Fireball, it is in the air and travelling. Counterspell would fizzle it out before it explodes but I see you trying to disrupt it triggering my reaction to disrupt your casting. The fireball explodes at it's destination. Also little trick, If you MUST get a spell off and not have it be counterspelled...if you are sorcerer or have Metamagic Adept with enough points, Subtle Spell protects you against being counterspelled

Honestly, that just doesn't make sense logistically. Counterspell literally says it interrupts the casting of a spell, the the character is still in the process of the verbal and somatic of the spell. So they are going to stop that to counterspell the counterspell?
@@darththeo its been errata'ed and confirmed by Jeremy Crawford so that's how it works. They way I envision it since he confirmed it is, Sorcerer cast Fireball, the mote of light is traveling to its destination before it explodes(all verbal/somatic/material is already used), Wizard cast Counterspell to interrupt it and essentially disables it before the "time bomb" goes off if they roll high enough(if it applies).

I'm surprised I don't see any comments complaining about the illegality of this whole move.. Fjord already used his reaction to teleport away after being attacked. He couldn't have counterspelled in the same round.
This is what I like to call, the war of the counter spells. Its a ancient deadlock where different sides fire of counter spell one after the other, until only one remains....or until the sorcerer subtle spells their the counter spell and it all fades into nothing
As cool as this moment was it really isn't logically possible to do if you think about it. A counter spell has to be very fast cast in order to be able to finish before the target spell does. So if CS only takes a fraction of the time a normal spell takes to cast it, it would be impossible for you finish your counter before theirs is cast. That isn't even counting the time to recognize the counter and react to it.
The cool thing about counterspelling a counterspell is that (depending on your interpretation of the rules obviously) you kinda don’t need a higher level spell slot OR even to roll for it. Counterspell is a 3rd level spell so it would theoretically work against an opposed counterspell automatically

house rule idea:
If a player counterspells a counterspell, roll on the wild magic table or an edited version of the table that best suits your game
I have a similar rule like this in my homebrew campaigns with a slight variation

I've had it hit 5 counterspells once. That Fireball really needed to not happen.

I'm surprised I don't see any comments complaining about the illegality of this whole move.. Fjord already used his reaction to teleport away after being attacked. He couldn't have counterspelled in the same round.

This is what I like to call, the war of the counter spells. Its a ancient deadlock where different sides fire of counter spell one after the other, until only one remains....or until the sorcerer subtle spells their the counter spell and it all fades into nothing

This is just like a normal MTG commander table
As cool as this moment was it really isn't logically possible to do if you think about it. A counter spell has to be very fast cast in order to be able to finish before the target spell does. So if CS only takes a fraction of the time a normal spell takes to cast it, it would be impossible for you finish your counter before theirs is cast. That isn't even counting the time to recognize the counter and react to it.
This makes me think of my dnd group so much.

The cool thing about counterspelling a counterspell is that (depending on your interpretation of the rules obviously) you kinda don’t need a higher level spell slot OR even to roll for it. Counterspell is a 3rd level spell so it would theoretically work against an opposed counterspell automatically
