Had a dog attack me and my dog (service dog) last year, I'm five foot nothing with a twisty spine. Truly a scary cat. The instinct to protect my dog was just nature and instant. I turned into the hulk and grabbed his collar and choked him out, when he ran at us again I kicked the dog as hard as I could multiple times. His owner did nothing! How these people did nothing blows my mind.

I am so sorry that happened to you and your dog. A few years ago when I had a Pit Bull, who I loved and was a loyal member of the family, but I was unaware of Garrett and properly training any dog (especially a Pit Bull). We just returned from a trip with our three dogs, and I had a personal emergency to attend to. I asked my wife to leash Cane (our Pit Bull, and I was smart enough to know a harness was insufficient) and take him in. She opened the door before leashing him and he ran over to a neighbor's yard where another male Pit Bull was attached to a chain and attacked him. I forgot about my emergency and rushed to intervene. Long story short, because of no leash, after beating my dog in the head to make him let go because he was twisting the collar of the other dog and he was seconds from asphyxiation, I pryed his jaws off of the collar and saved his life. The other Pit Bull was actually a passive dog because of the abuse he suffered before my neighbor adopted him. But, I understand how quickly circumstances can change and I am glad I was able to save him because he did not deserve to die because he was minding his own business.

That poor Golden at the end. If people have powerful dogs, they should know how to handle bad situations. I had a dog for 12 years, I had two situations where there could have been trouble. First time was a dog park, I recognized a bad situation and quickly removed my dog. First and last time at a dog park. Second time was hiking and met a guy with a much larger dog off leash which got agressive with my dog. Stood between both dogs and showed the husky who was boss. Then gave the owner a blast of shit for not having his dog leashed. He admitted that his dog was agressive towards small dogs.

i used to walk my older (8 now) rottie/lab throughout the city without a leash on and never had any problems, i moved to the countryside, 1st walk we are attacked by small terrier, from that moment on she hates not only small dogs, but anything below a certain size, she is still good with medium size and above and we have no issues but when she spots smaller animals, she goes into prey drive. I had to resort to walking her on a leash after that. I have another rottie lab, she is 2 and she has the exact opposite problem, she cannot stand big things, like cars trucks etc and she always makes a point of letting it well known to the whole neighbourhood about it

The Guide elaborates on the techniques used on the show. The examples given in the ruclips.net/user/postUgkxECnmSvBSv_NGWx4_ChD73pF3NYZwI2F3 are helpful and some of the techniques suggested very useful. One such technique/tool suggested was the lure stick to encourage a small dog to keep up with the heel command. I have a small dog who lags behind smelling any and everything and find it hard to keep bending over while walking to his level. The lure stick is great also for another dogs focus and sprinting at anything that catches her eye. The stories about different dogs, their different temperaments, have been helpful, especially Lulu's: After reading about Lulu's challenges I felt relief concerning one of my rescues that I have had for 10 years. Over many years I have checked out many training books from the library, watched different shows, DVDS, bought training books, taken lessons and this book is the best by far! Kindness, patience and perseverance works.

Had a neighbor's Cane Corso try to attack me and my 170+lb GSD while I was doing off-leash training a few years ago. Reminder, I was 16 years old and about 5'1 at the time. My first thought was, "Welp, this is where I die." Nope. Tobias, my GSD, turned on that Corso and just about broke the dog's neck. Within 2 seconds the neighbor's dog stood up and limped away. This is where I told Toby to "Leave it." and without another glance at the dog, he glued back to my side. The neighbor ran outside and tried to blame me for starting a dog fight even though it was 3 seconds of personal protection against their aggressive pet. Needless to say, I'm very thankful that my best friend stood up for me in that moment where I would've absolutely gotten seriously injured. Thanks Toby.

I can’t understand why people don’t bother learning anything about dog body language or psychology. Every single one of those fight could have been prevented. It’s crazy to think we willingly give people a creature that is capable of killing one another and sometimes even a human without requiring the owner to do any type of research or have any type of dog knowledge. It’s just “here’s a dog with super high prey drive that was bred to hunt boars, good luck!” Plus so many people don’t know what being a responsible dog owner really means. Part of it means making sure your dog doesn’t bother or disrupt the lives of people or other animals, just because you don’t care about your dogs bad behavior doesn’t make it okay. Having a dog with bad behavior and doing nothing about it makes you one of the most irresponsible and annoying dog owners. I don’t care if it’s a golden retriever you shouldn’t be letting them go up to other people and other dogs.

@@shlimey04 I am a woman and I am one-hundred-per-cent fully capable of keeping all four of my pitbulls under control and although I do have one easy one I have real dogs that have real prey drive and real instincts and they go hard. But as long as I do the work of working with them in those states of high drive and building them up to be obedient in that then we have a dog that can be worked with and managed. Sometimes I have to put a little grumble in my voice and and show them that I am stronger than them! You never have to physically do anything to a dog to show them that you are stronger it is all in the way that you present and what energy you are projecting. And your dogs may know that you're the leader every single day but you have an off-day they are going to pick up on it and take control so you can't have an off-day. so don't put an umbrella under that category of all women because there's some of us that are going to do whatever is necessary to have a balanced pack. I'm not scared to get in there and get hurt in the process. Now granted this did not come naturally to me as I'm not a type a personality. I had to learn some very hard lessons along with my first few dogs in order to have the confidence with my dogs that I needed to be assertive. but it is definitely something that we can do and it really just takes an open mind and a willingness to dedicate yourself to doing whatever it is that they need despite what it is that you want to do or may not want to do. Despite how fearful you might be in certain circumstances, your dog always has to have confidence that you can protect yourself and not only yourself but you can protect them. I don't think a lot of women come by this naturally but once you have been in a situation with a large powerful dog and you have felt the helplessness that comes along with that situation you don't ever want to be in it again and you do what's necessary to handle business. I for one don't like being helpless and I don't want to watch one of my dogs either kill a dog or be killed themselves as I have watched one of my dogs kill another dog many years ago and it was not cool at all! Don't get me wrong I will totally let my dogs dig into that prey drive and Hunt outside for appropriate prey but not somebody's Pet. I have dogs that I don't introduced to outside dogs because I'm not going to risk putting them in a situation to fail but I also have dogs that I can introduce to any dog and I can have full confidence that I know what I'm looking at and I'm paying attention to make sure that anything happens I'm on top of it before it can turn into a bad situation.

@Johnny Bravo Pit isn’t a breed neither is Pitbull it’s an umbrella term used to describe different breeds of dogs such as (American Bully, American Pitbull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, etc) Each of those have their own temperament and breed traits. In the golden retriever fight clip the dog called “Pitbull” was in prey drive mode. That’s what so many people don’t understand, none of them are evil dogs but they do have prey drive some more than others. The APBT is a catch dog, bred to hunt boars and hogs. And when their owner doesn’t give them a proper outlet or train them correctly you get fights like that. Too many people own these dogs and have no idea what they’re doing. They aren’t “nanny dogs” and they aren’t your “fur babies” these are dogs bred with a specific purpose that require lots of PROPER training (not the positive only BS) and socialization. They can be amazing dogs or complete nightmares it all depends on the owner.

Harnesses are best for little dogs like Chihuahuas because a collar and leash can cause deadly injury to their fragile necks. I use a harness on my GSD to pack stuff when we're hiking, but not with a leash. attached.

Thanks for posting this! Most people just get a dog and have NO CLUE what they are getting in to. They get the wrong breed, think their dog is “human” and treat it like a child. It’s an animal, a pack animal, not a human. People: Do your research before you get a dog and make sure that it fits your lifestyle. If you don’t train and exercise them and your human family isn’t above them in the pack order, don’t be surprised when you have trouble. Stop “babying” your dogs and give them what they need. And GET RID OF THE HARNESSES! Your dogs aren’t working on farms pulling things or in the tundra pulling a sleigh! Harnesses only make the dog pull more. Use a proper collar for your breed. Rant over…😊

I agree with you about this so much! I've seen video of people being out of their wits with their agressive dog...and the proffessional who came to help them straight out told them...this dog is mixture of something and herding breed...he acts out because he has tons of energy and he is bored! And they took him to farm...and he started herding cattle as pro! Absolutely loved it! ...And I was so sad that they didn't find him new home on farm and instead kept him in their small place...
With this type of dog if you want to keep him, you better start thinking about buying a farm!
And from dog to cat...you need to train them and be the top dog. Be the alpha, be the one in charge...they need to know boundaries and you need to be able to comunicate with them in way they understand. And even the small breeds of dogs need discipline! It's not cute when small dogs jumps all over your visitors and tries to lick their nostrils and their lips. It's damn gross.
Personally I don't get people who don't put collar upon their dogs. I get that harness is probably better choice for car ride, but elsewhere? Not really. I had been walking my sister's french bulldog while she was on holiday for a week and the harness was quickly abandoned! Because if you'd pull on harness, it was as he didn't even feel it! While with collar, instant reaction.
But even when I walked him on harness, he still had collar on. I'd not leave house with him without his collar, such thought never even crossed my mind.. Like what if your dog gets spooked and runs off? Tag with phone number on dog's collar is easiest way to get the animal back home!
After New Years few years ago a large Bernardine lady wandered in front of our house. We thought it was our neighbours three houses down because they have that breed...but it wasn't theirs. And it turned out dog was from village next to ours...run off during fireworks day before and couldn't find way home. She was really lovely and so happy when we finally tracked down her owner and he came to get her.
On New Year no vets were open...so even if she had microchip, we'd not be able to read it. It was good luck that the neighbours who had Bernardine knew that another family in that next village had that breed also...and they had mutual friend..so they called him, he called the owner.
We told owner that it'd be nice if she had collar with tag, he explained that she was pup still(she was huge, how big is this breed when full size?!) and she outgrew it, so they were going to buy new one after holidays...

I agree. Dogs are wonderful animals, but they are not human. Some people act like you're a terrible person for saying this, but it's just a fact. They don't think the same as humans do, they have different needs. You can’t treat it like you would a child.

I did a lot of research, educated myself, went to classes, met breeds etc. Decided on a husky as I'm very active with hiking, biking, running etc. He wears a collar for walks and runs, but he knows when I put his harness on, it's time to pull the sled. Massive difference with a harness, they know to pull, pull hard and run fast. The harder you pull back on a harness the harder they pull forward.

We used to run a rising stable open to the public and wed get asked “do your horses buck?” Yes they will. Not because they want you off or they’re bad, but because it they perceive a threat, all training does is minimizes they’re natural instinct-it does not eliminate it. Every horse will buck and every dog will bite if they perceive a situation they feel requires such a reaction. Thats not saying there are not things I can do to advert most situations. But if I am distracted or miss my timing, or just dont know the signs, that horse will buck and that dog will bite. The key may be in not placing our animals in situations they haven’t been at least exposed to and hopefully trained to looking to us for guidance.

So me my mom, grandma and her man was at their place, we went to a lake nearby with their American Staffordshire Terrier just chilling there. She’s around 6 y/o very chill and just no complaints. There was an old couple there arriving with their 3 dogs a bit far away but nothing that was complicated. So this woman around 50 came there with her car and opened up the luggage. She had 2 Dobermans unleashed that immediately ran towards us started to aggressively bark and circulate around us and trying to attack our doggy Luna. I was closest to them and scared as hell cuz I saw it in their eyes they weren’t playful. They bit and tried again on Luna but my grandma’s man took his arm and tried to separate them. Then the owner came, no control or whatsoever and she went so protective against herself when he yelled that “wtf have control over your dogs, why are they even unleashed when u saw us and 4 random dogs” I remember the fear in me, I’m not uses to dogs, I’ve had a few cats now one cat at my moms. They were so fkn untrained 😩 moral of the story (trust no random dog cuz u gave no idea who the moron owner is, period.) 😡

Picking them up by their back legs works, or just straight "air jail". If they latch on stick something up it's butt. I personally have pried a dogs jaw open, though I wouldn't recommend that unless you know the dog won't bite you.

i got some experience with it but i'd have to know more about your situation before i can really say anything that could be helpful. at most i can tell you this now, resource guarding is a learned behaviour in most cases, depends alot of your pups position in the litter from my experience, i have 2 lab rotties, the older one was always excluded and thus had problems with resource guarding while the younger one was a boss and wouldnt take shit from the other pups thus she always had plenty and now doesnt have that kind of resource guarding issues. They do not share food but if the older one is not fast enough and the younger gets her treats there is no problems, as long as the younger one keeps her nose out of the older's feeding bowl it's all good but that has a simple solution, you feed them together but on delay feeding the older first and after a minute the younger, so they take an approx same ammount of time to eat and keep themselves to their bowls.

    • @MrWarren1991

Have a zero tolerance policy for resource guarding, if and when your dog does it, pin them. Pinning is not overly violent, depending on your dogs size implies how much force it will take, they MUST know who the boss is, I as a male in a house with 3 female dogs and my fiance, had to teach her to be the boss, after that food aggression has went down hill in my household. To pin the dog your scruff them and take their legs out from under them at the same time, forcing them onto their side until they calm down.

@@MrWarren1991 knowing my dogs that would have 0 or even counter effect, the older one would take offense and from then on do it even more on purpose the younger would take it as a game and do it even more on purpose... the way i do it, 1st i was standing between them when they ate, then i put the water bowl in between them after a week of me beeing there, week 3 i started feeding on delay and noe only when i dispense their treats they compete for it but they keep their noses to their bowls (as in the week i was standing in between, as soon as their nose left their bowl i took it away, sometimes with half or more dinner still there but they learned, week 2 i had to verbally correct a few times but it was enough). Did i mention they are both rottie labs, the older has a dash of hound and cane corso as well so roughness with them is only good to disperse their energy but as far as training goes it does not really work all that well, thing is they are smart AF and can take quite a lot physically, i train them to be tough, and when we wrestle sometimes even im concerned when i go overboard, im big and burly too, and im like shit i might have thrown her too hard this time, or they fall funny, never even a peep, and i had them both since they were pups, i never heard them cry out in pain, they are unbelievable, they just bounce back and go straight at me again, especially the younger one. Speaking of, i play Hunt with the younger one and is like i chase her if i manage to grab her she loses or she hunts me and if she gets my pants i lose, so few days back, i did not know we were even playing, the crazy dog ambushes me with a jump from a 4m roof lands her nose in the treat pouch and we tumble to the ground, she was under me so i start to panic im hurting her i turn on my back, she is still eating, nose in the pouch 0 fucks given

I own a pit mix that I spent thousands of hours loose leash training, off leash training and socialising. We would regularly go to an off leash walking track where she would follow voice commands to avoid dogs with red flag body language. And all of my hard work and my dogs mental health came crashing down when new neighbours moved in with their two psychotic German Shepherds. 24hrs a day for two and a half years those dogs would be at the fence trying to get through to kill my girl. We reinforced the fence, we put up metal sheeting so they couldn’t see her but they would still go mental even if they only heard her or even scarier our kids. She would spend most of her time in the house and after being attacked at the park by a friendly dog she started to become fear reactive on our off leash walks, growling at dominant dogs or dogs with no manners. She still has play dates with her doggy friends and got her very own kitten last Christmas but off leash areas with “don’t worry, he’s friendly” idiots are no longer something we enjoy. My vicious pit bull has never laid a tooth on another dog, cat or human, I did everything a responsible dog owner should do but morons ruined it.

I've commented before about my pup having a harness on and just to clarify, it is with a collar as well. I like taking him through hikes and the woods so harness keeps the leash from wrapping his legs. He only has his collar off for baths and brushing to keep his fur from matting.

I ALWAYS carry a strong human repellent quality pepper spray when ever I leave the house, even to check my mail, but especially when I walk my dog.

5:20 I hope Judge ordered to PUT the Pitbull to death. The Ower of Pitbull should pay serious money to Golden retriever owner. She should also be prohibited from owning dogs. She did nothing at all to stop it.

My biggest gripe is people who are walking their dogs will not position themselves between the dog and myself.

If they do that, they're telling the dog you're a threat. So if the dog had a doubt, you can be sure it'll attack. Best thing to do is to walk with confidence with the dog and act normal

Can't we agree on a simple formula: you should not keep a dog that is stronger than you unless you really need the protection, but then you should ensure through training that the dog obeys you one hundred percent.

Harnesses are terrible. The shift in weight is a serious disadvantage for the walker. Dont walk large dogs without correction collars of some kind. You cannot control every situation

Once I was walking my rottwiler in the neighborhood and then he was peeing and I was just standing then I look up and about 20 feet away I see a boxer and a German shepherd standing together with no leash just staring at us, I was scared and I didn’t know what to do as we just stared at eachother for a while luckily the owner came out and yelled at them to go inside and luckily they listened
