    Guitar Concerto No. 1, Op. 30 (1808)
    (I used two scores; the piano score for the orchestral tuttis by Anton Diabelli which is in a different key as he arranged it in a simplified version for guitar and piano. The guitar part is in original key and is from 1st print. I had no access to the original score)
    1. Allegro maestoso
    2. Andantino-Siciliano (9:01)
    3. Allegretto-Polonaise (15:23)
    Eduardo Fernández, guitar and English Chamber Orchestra conducted by
    Quote
    “ Giuliani's expression and tone in guitar playing were astonishing, and a competent critic said of him: "He vocalized his adagios to a degree impossible to be imagined by those who never heard him; his melody in slow movements was no longer like the short, unavoidable staccato of the piano, requiring profusion of harmony to cover the deficient sustension of notes, but it was invested with a character, not only sustained and penetrating, but of so earnest[3] and pathetic a description as to make it appear the natural characteristic of the instrument. In a word, he made the instrument sing."

    This is superb music, however you may define such. Please everyone, enjoy, for this is one of the most joyous works written/performed. Absolutely superb!! And fantastically played by the soloist, also. Excellent in every way!

    this concerto includes several themes that I know from Mozart, for example the second theme in the first movement resembles the Vogelfänger's second aria from the Magic Flute

    • @bartjebartmans
      @bartjebartmans  5 лет назад +6

      Yes indeed. No way this is a coincidence, it follow the aria's outline pretty closely.

      Actually that is very true. Although this concerto is beautiful and I really love it with passion, considering the time it was composed, it was nothing new. As a guitar concerto it is phenomenal, but as a composition of its era, it was repetition of all other ordinary classical music grammar and nothing really “rocking”. If the composition was release 50 years sooner, the reception would have been very different.
      However, this should not stop us from enjoying this concerto. It is well written and displays Giuliani’s ability as a guitar player and guitar composer very well. It sounds awesome If it is played by a good guitarist with good orchestra. I personally like the performance with English Chamber. (I believe this recording was done by them, but I could be wrong)

      It was really common at that times. All composers done, also Mozart took a lot of pieces from other composers. Nobody was against this pratice, at the opposite, they was glad to be "quoted" from others

    the score is in c major... but why the performance is in a major?

    • @4namor7
      @4namor7 2 года назад +2

      Because it was composed for the terz guitar, the smaller version of guitar tuned minor third higher than a regular guitar (g' - d' - a# - f - c - G). Giuliani used the terz guitar because of its more brilliant sound which was seemed to work better when playing with an orchestra. For practical reasons the guitar score is written minor third lower, so the player doesn't need to transpose or think of other notes when playing open strings (imagine that a piece for piano would be written in certain key, but you would have to play it minor third lower). So actually it's quite a blunder that nowadays all guitarists who play this concerto on the modern guitar sound a minor third lower then when Giuliani performed it himself.

      What do you mean? Did I have to edit it? Yes, Fernandez played an abbreviated version, but mainly orchestral tuttis were shortened.

    • @musicstuff698
      @musicstuff698 5 лет назад +2

      Bartje Bartmans it doesn’t sound like what’s on the score. The beginning you clearly hear an A but on the score it’s a C

    • @bartjebartmans
      @bartjebartmans  5 лет назад +2

      Oh yes, I should add that the piano part (orchestral tuttis) is by Anton Diabelli he transcribed it to another key (simplified) from original. The guitar part is in correct key. Thus I knitted two different scores together as I have no access to a complete score.

    • @badsum7722
      @badsum7722 5 лет назад +3

      @@bartjebartmans Diabelli's edition was for Piano and Terz guitar. Terz guitar is a transposing instrument. It is tuned minor third higher. Hence, playing A will produce C note. That is why the piano part was written in C. Diabelli's edition includes many changes in guitar part as well.
      Terz guitar was very popular at Giuliani's time. Terz guitar was used in duet and other ensemble settings a lot. In fact, Giuliani's third concerto was written for Terz guitar.
