- In this video, we're discussing On the Genealogy of Morals written by Friedrich Nietzsche.
Published in 1887, Nietzsche builds further upon the concepts introduced in Beyond Good & Evil and The Gay Science by doing a deep investigation into the origins of our moral beliefs.
This video is part of my 5-part Nietzsche November series where I'm breaking down one of Nietzsche's books each week, exploring the key themes and core concepts within the text.

Maxim 108, Beyond Good & Evil: "There are no moral phenomena at all, only a moral interpretation of phenomena." The 1800's was a very decisive time period, when various innocences were lost and nihilisms born. It does seem (especially in this book) like Nietzsche did with morality what Darwin did with organisms - to show it has a history, and is not ordained from on high as some objective unchanging set of rules. This is an incredibly tough pill for people to swallow when they really think about it. Anyway, this is definitely one of my favorite books by Nietzsche. I've seen a few insightful videos that interpret and discuss it. To me, you've done as good a job as any of them.
Apropos to quote from BG&E when that's the next book in this mini Nietzsche series! Appreciate the feedback and agree with the difficulty in erasing our prejudices about morality
I think this is a good lecture style. Its at the right point of entry level explanation without being pretentious. Feels like a TA talking after class. Getting this work down to a 36 min video is no small feat. Nice work! Hope your channel takes off.
Very much appreciate that!
This is awesome, I appreciate it 👍🏻
saving me time reading all these books myself
Do you write philosophy or essays? Fiction?
I don't write nearly as much as I'd like to, but I do have some short essays on my substack. Link is in the description!
