Black Mesa has done many good and many bad things in my opinion. I am a big Half-Life 1 fan since I can think and Black Mesa is a very mixed bag for me. Also HL1 Multiplayer is a very big reason for me why I love the game so much and Black Mesa MP just isn't good enaugh. They focused mainly on singleplayer and on changing the experience rather than preserving it.

I played through Black Mesa ALLLLLLLLL the way back in like 2012/13 as a dumb 11/12 year old without understanding they didn’t have Xen and I was so confused as to why it kept crashing when I “Jump into the Portal, Freeman.”
This is the same vibe as Brutal Doom inspiring Doom 2016 then people who couldn't play Doom 2016 modding the hell out of vanilla Doom to closely resemble 2016 but accidentally redid Brutal Doom.
Black Mesa is a great game, and I loved it. My only gripe is that it captured a very different atmosphere than Half-Life. The music, while really good in a vacuum, was changed, and I don't know if that was necessary. The original music was perfect already and captured a certain feeling of eeriness. The level design is top-notch, though, I never found myself too confused or lost, but I felt like it was challenging too. The original game was kind of a dark comedy, but upgrading it to higher graphics and then laughing at the scientists for dying would be more off-putting (I mean look at half life 2, it went from dark comedy to gritty post-apocalypse scenerio)... So I don't blame them for turning up the drama, I think it worked for the medium. Another gripe is, and I DO think it looks great, it's beautiful and I was blown away. But their depiction of Xen was a little bit too different than the original. If we could combine the dead depressing husk that was half life's xen, and the beauty and strange life of black mesa xen, it'd be perfect. I saw a video a while ago of xen remade for source 2, and it felt just like that. To me that's a perfect depiction of xen. also I hate to be a hater, but the gman's voice really threw me off, he definitely tried his best, but it was too nasally, maybe if he just deepened his voice just a little it'd be fine but it throws me off when a character's voice changes drastically.
Half life source was good at its time I sometimes still play it too this day here and there do like the original too look back on but I say black mesa is more my favorite more enemies different scientist and you see eli and dr klyiner in the resosnces cascade even the men levels are awsome
i am glad black mesa exists. there's good reasons for it to exists and it's great many new people get to play a great game but up to timely standards. but it's not for me, sadly. i unironically dislike how it's playing and i don't know why or how. i wonder if i might like black mesa classic. thank you for introducing this to me
You could say the same about HL:Source and Black Mesa. They're both just remixes of the same game with a few added features. It's actually pretty neat to see how people are reimagining the game. The original Half Life has a very specific style to it that isn't really replicated very well by other games (HL2 was really great, but it's a very different experience. The original game is like Die Hard mashed up with a bunch of pulp Sci Fi from the 50s and the Alien franchise, whereas the sequel feels like you're the second coming of christ and you spend a lot of of the game driving down a highway and killing cops as the figurehead of a working class revolutionary movement. Both have their merits) so I think that it's a good idea to really dig into the design and see what works and what doesn't.
those goldsrc shadows were always glitchy that's why they were off by default by hl1's release and later removed :D but the 20th anniversary update re-added the cvar.
@@skele3776 not a hater, i like both. The problem of black mesa imo is just an abundance of details, some unnecessary objects and textures which make game beautiful, but less readable. In original HL you always see clearly which objects are interactable, where you can and can not go, where are some supplies to pick up etc. In BM it's less readable and that's the only thing i don't like there, but it's an AMAZING remake anyways.

Despite enjoying my time with Black Mesa, I think it looks too clean for me. The entire vibe went from "thriller with action elements" to just "action" Maybe it's because i like the low res textures of the original... Who knows But this mod is a perfect balance of what i liked in both versions. Really looking forward to it.

black mesa doesn‘t require a good computer in 2024. even a low end computer from 2012 is capable of playing the game :D also half life: source wasn‘t hated by everyone… a steam pipe update ruined the game and added tons of bugs which can be fixed by a mod. except for some strange people who didn‘t get the project vision back when it was developed , ppl thought it‘s going to be a half life 2-ish remake. beside the questionable start a decent video dude 😊👌🏼

Black Mesa is good... Up untill xen, where they decided to filler that up with useless badly done narrative, puzzles and maps. The original xen were much better and did the job in a better way.
