The first X-Men is definitely an important movie in superhero history, It's flawed to be sure as the genre was still trying to find it's footing but overall it's a solid movie.
Sam Raimi's Spider-Man is probably a more important precursor to the golden age. It retained what people loved about the comics: the cheesiness, the colour, while still being deep and grounded. X-Men feels like a relic of a bygone era. Black leather suits and a severe absences of colour.
I think the director did really well at making a good introduction to these characters and a world with those powers. I like the politics relating to everyone's safety, the idea that even to mutants those powers can be horrific, and of course the metaphor for racism here. Unfortunately, it does feel like setup to bigger and better things to happen in this universe. And although I do like Bryan Singer's choice of including mutants like Jubilee, Kitty Pryde, and Pyro, it sucks that they were all recast (although of course who we got later are really good). Also Magneto is a fantastic villain here and I enjoy all of our main and side protagonists as well as the usage of all their mutant abilities in the story! For a director and writers like David Hayter to balance all of this, like this, is very impressive but overall the film deserves a 7/10. It's enjoyable but doesn't quite feel like the epic it could've been.
Something that always bugged me with X-men in general both movies and comics is that we really don't see much of the other sides reasoning of registering mutants that are not mad bigots. Cause I think it's a perfectly valid point of being wary of someone who can basically cause a hurricanes if she gets moody or a guy destroying half a city block if he accidentally trips and loses his glasses. Someone Xavier and Emma Frost can easily control the government and destroy multiple countries because they felt like it and their is nothing we could do about it. And yes the X-men have their own points but it always seemed silly that they always seem to be the right side on every argument and they keep doing it by straw maning their opposition of the debates.
I thought magneto learned about rogue because of senator Kelly. I thought they were at some kind of Senate hearing where senator Kelly was talking about mutants and he brought up the girl who liked drained her boyfriend and shit. And my needle and Xavier were both there and that's the first time we see them together.
Awesome review! I felt the same way about this movie. I think this movie would have been better if they had actually focused on the other X-Men characters besides Wolverine and Rogue. Could you do revisted reviews of X-Men 2 and X-Men the Last Stand?
The question of how Xavier learned to control his powers without having a mentor makes me wonder what the experiences of the first ever Jedi would have been like.
Hello captain Logan great job on X-Men revised review really enjoyed happy that superhero rewind is officially back daily now and you mention how did magneto know about rogue well the specify that is evidence is in the movie mystique is disgusted as senator Kelly assistant Henry gyrich beginning of the movie in the Congress where Kelly listed couple of individuals that are mutants to people of the Congress so hence maybe rogue was listed in that list mystique then inform magneto about rogue that's probably how he rogue right away
Great observation. And Mystique also disguised herself as Bobby. Infiltrating the school and getting information as well. So she was a complete spy of sorts. But it's also holdovers from previous script drafts and rewrites too. In one draft, I think Magneto actually did want Logan. And or, his Adamantium was more of a key to things. So they kinda compiled different drafts and whatnot, and turned it into a twist. Where we think he/they want Logan. I actually had to do a bit of researching just to find this answer. Cause it started to Dawn on me more and more that question lol I think Logan would've been the energy source for the machine AKA maybe his Adamantium.. I think originally, Cyclops and Storm were there to stop Sabertooth and rescue Logan. AKA Charles using Cerebro to locate mutants and such. I think part of the idea behind it all, is that Xavier tracks down mutants to help them, and that he was originally looking for Logan, because that's exactly who they thought Magneto wanted to begin with.. in the final movie when Sabertooth surmises THEY KNEW, Magneto blames Charles without any explanation. Charles says he doesn't know what Magneto was planning due to the helmet. So it's a plot hole in the final cut. Erik (Magneto) isn't wearing his helmet when he first encounters Xavier at the beginning of the film. Xavier might have read that Erik sent Sabertooth to track someone down, so Xavier could have been using Cerebro to keep tabs on him. He sent Cyclops and Storm when he detected Sabertooth was close to his prey, but there were two mutants there. They wrongly concluded Wolverine was the mutant of interest and not Rogue. That is one hypothesis. Xavier could be using Cerebro to find young mutants who are running scared that he can help, like Rogue. So he sends Cyclops and Storm to pick up Rogue, and they happen to stumble upon Sabertooth, who they presumably know works with Erik, and jump to the conclusion that Wolverine is a mutant of Interest to Magneto.
I dont care what anyone says. My 10year old self loved that "What happens to a frog when its struck by lightning" line. And you know what, it wasnt delivered well, but it's still a good line now.
I noticed a narrative in x men media of youth characters being a pov person Jubilee in the animated series, kitty pride during much of the Claremont run, and two a lesser extent rouge in this first movie and mystique in first class. I think the disenfranchised youth sub text is another layer x men hangs on. But wolverine in my opinion detracts from that in some versions. Mmm sorry for the rants. I love superhero rewind and X men 1 is a good film, but I think it's very derivative, the black leather and gritty aesthetic is very reminiscent of Batman 89 I think the Singer x men movies have always lacked a uniqueness and individuality of the source material. X men isn't defined by silver metallic cinematography and wolverine. I really feel like we under appreciate Blade 1 and it's sub text and influence. Blade predates the American Hong Kong action popularized by the matrix along with slow bullet time and black leather. I love how this is a weekly thing again.

@Digonto Zahid So, were you planning on making a cogent point somewhere in all this gibberish?
@Digonto Zahid So that's a no, then?
Before 2008, I think Spider-Man in 2002 was the beginning on the new age because Blade and X-Men just felt like 90s action movies for the most part.
Plus Spider-Man made over $800 Million and became the first movie to have over a $100 Million Opening Weekend.
38:25 "I need to know" You can't know because it would be impossible to explain. It's magic.
I agree with cap, an X-Men live action show would be great. If done right it could be what the arrow verse failed to be

Pretty much, I think Logan kind of helps with that argument mainly with how dangerous it would be for everyone if a guy like Xavier became senile.

There's a story in Legends about that
Logan cant leave people in the boat out to dry.....the same boat he was left in at the end of X-men DOFP? Yeah

@@RyGuy-fi4zx oh yes good point I remember that plot detail from previous drafts of first one make sense as well.
It's amazing to see how often these are coming up, but I can't help wonder what happened to Bat Cap?
I'll be getting back to it soon!

Captain Marvelous It’s not inherently a bad line. It’s the delivery and editing on Storm that makes me laugh.
Really looking forward to the tmnt 1990 revisit

I’ve always wanted to see you do a video on Superman: The Animated Series
Why don’t these videos have different images or stills anymore. It feels lacking just seeing one image.
