  • We spend our last few weeks in Turkey with our friends Beth, Paul, Gabi, Alex and Belinda. We then sail back to Greece as our Schengen visa time had finally reset. We check in at Symi and explore the island. We sail to Tilos and Nisyros as we make our way north towards Leros where Wishful Thinking would be hauled out for the winter.

Enjoying the episodes, guys. Are you flagged under Australia or Polish flag for registration. I will be in Turkey to help deliver a yacht to Athens, and then I'm looking at purchasing a sailboat. Also, how are you guys navigating the Schengen Shuffle?

Thanks so much! Our boat is registered in Australia.
For Schengen last year we did:
      90 days Greece
      90 days Turkey
      21 days Greece
90 days between UK & Australia
This year our rough plan is:
      90 days Greece
      90 days Albania, Montenegro, Tunisia
90 days between Italy and Spain
If you have any more questions we're happy to help! You can also message us on Instagram if you have it. We're @sailingwishfulthinking on there. All the best with your plans! 😊

@sailingwishfulthinking I was thinking Polish flag as other boaters reckon the process is alot easier than going through AMSA. I have no plans to sail back to Aus. I just want to sail around the Med for several years and then sell the boat in the EU. Insurance seems to be an issue was it alot easier under the Aus flag?

@magzie1126 We wanted to register our boat in Australia just in case we sail it home 😅 So we didn't consider Polish registration and are unsure of the costs/process/ insurance ramifications of this. We insured our boat with Haven Knox Johnston in the UK, with Topsail as the broker. We also got an offer from Pantaenius but Haven Knox Johnston was a lot cheaper. The AMSA registration process wasn't too difficult, there were just a lot of forms and you need to post them original documents, so it's best to do this from Australia. It also took several weeks for them to issue us registration and post us the original certificate, so it's best to do it well in advance of when you plan to launch your boat. It cost us about $1800 from memory but is a one-off fee. AMSA has a good website with all the steps to follow: www.amsa.gov.au/vessels-operators/ship-registration/register-vessel-australian-general-shipping-register They also let you email them the application for "pre-approval" before you post the originals so you can fix any mistakes before posting. This helps to speed things up. Hope this helps 😊
