Spring refit and boat work on Leros island, Greece - New solar, bilge alarm and fridge (Ep 12)
We fly back to Leros island in Greece where we left Wishful Thinking for the European winter on the hard at Moor and Dock Boatyard. We get straight into boat work to prepare to launch her for our second sailing season. Below the waterline we remove rust on the keel, replace some thru hulls, fibreglass over some others and antifoul paint. We also service our engine, reseal our chain plates, upgrade our solar system, install a bilge alarm, wire in a new fridge/freezer and remove an old macerator... We agree to cat-sit Chicho, our friends' cat, and he keeps us company while we get our jobs done.

    I think I know that cat! We keep our Dufour on Aegina during the winter and I did climb the ladder to the boat while it was on the hard last year and came face to face with a cat. Freaked me out. He jumped over to the boat next to us and disappeared but I couldn't figure out how he got onto our boat. Now I know. Regardless, always enjoy videos of people working on their boats. And I do like that design for the bilge alarm. I hope to have the same success installing one on our boat.

    Great to see another channel on RUclips of sailing adventures Ep1 had some amazing footage and you’ve chosen a really good boat. One tip if you will allow me! Contrary to the word out there not every viewer/subscriber is a randy starved male so please do not sink to titivating click bait to attract viewers. Occasionally I'm wearing bathers in the videos, because that's generally what we wear in summer when we're swimming off the boat. No different to Ryan being shirtless on the boat 90% of the time 😂

    Enjoying the episodes, guys. Are you flagged under Australia or Polish flag for registration. I will be in Turkey to help deliver a yacht to Athens, and then I'm looking at purchasing a sailboat. Also, how are you guys navigating the Schengen Shuffle?

      Thanks so much! Our boat is registered in Australia. For Schengen last year we did: 90 days Greece 90 days Turkey 21 days Greece 90 days between UK & Australia This year our rough plan is: 90 days Greece 90 days Albania, Montenegro, Tunisia 90 days between Italy and Spain If you have any more questions we're happy to help! You can also message us on Instagram if you have it. We're @sailingwishfulthinking on there. All the best with your plans! 😊

      @sailingwishfulthinking I was thinking Polish flag as other boaters reckon the process is alot easier than going through AMSA. I have no plans to sail back to Aus. I just want to sail around the Med for several years and then sell the boat in the EU. Insurance seems to be an issue was it alot easier under the Aus flag?

    • @sailingwishfulthinking
      @sailingwishfulthinking 2 месяца назад

      @magzie1126 We wanted to register our boat in Australia just in case we sail it home 😅 So we didn't consider Polish registration and are unsure of the costs/process/ insurance ramifications of this. We insured our boat with Haven Knox Johnston in the UK, with Topsail as the broker. We also got an offer from Pantaenius but Haven Knox Johnston was a lot cheaper. The AMSA registration process wasn't too difficult, there were just a lot of forms and you need to post them original documents, so it's best to do this from Australia. It also took several weeks for them to issue us registration and post us the original certificate, so it's best to do it well in advance of when you plan to launch your boat. It cost us about $1800 from memory but is a one-off fee. AMSA has a good website with all the steps to follow: www.amsa.gov.au/vessels-operators/ship-registration/register-vessel-australian-general-shipping-register They also let you email them the application for "pre-approval" before you post the originals so you can fix any mistakes before posting. This helps to speed things up. Hope this helps 😊

    Hi Guys,hope you’ve had a great season …Moody’s are the best we have a 1998 Moody 40 mk2. We’re interested to know how your DIY holding tank has performed and if you could have done anything differently. We want to copy what you’ve done and fit it into the SB aft lazerette locker. Cheers Nige and Donna.

    • @ryananthony6416
      @ryananthony6416 7 месяцев назад

      Hi Nige and Donna, thanks for watching the videos! The holding tank has worked fine and has allowed us to sail in Turkey this season. We haven't had any issues getting pumped out, and no leaks! I built the shelf just slightly above the waterline to maximise the capacity of the tank and to ensure a good flush when dropping the waste at sea. I would recommend finding a tank that has an inspection opening already installed as this is the biggest risk of leakage. We used a petrol tank which did not have an inspection opening large enough to get the fittings in, so I had to cut and fit an opening. I would also recommend plumbing in a bypass to the tank so that you can direct deposit when at sea. I am planning on installing a bypass on ours for next season. Currently our forward head is our direct to sea toilet and aft head is the holding tank toilet. All the best with the instal! Feel free to message us through Instagram if you want to discuss. Ryan

    We are just replacing the (1984!) Mild steel 😬 fuel tank in our Moody 29. The dreaded diesel bug got a firmer hold after we met you and despite mutiple doses of majic potion i was seeing more not less in the prefilter. A couple of brisk sails probably mobilised other rubbish as well . Remarkably SS, alloy and llatic tanks are generally guerenteed for less than 10 years. We have decided on a smaller plastic tank to turn over our fuel more frequently. Naxos to Leros was mainly a calm motor 15 to 20 litres for our 2 Cyl Bukh. We always used leave the tank full, to reduce inernal rust maybe not so important wuth the new tank...

      Cheers Wayne! Sorry to hear about your fuel tank but will be good when it's sorted! Luckily the previous owner of our boat had recently replaced our fuel tank with a stainless one so that is handy. It's a bit smaller than the original though and the fuel gauge wasn't readjusted so now the fuel gauge only kicks in when it's already half empty 😅 Not ideal but now that we're aware of it we just calculate how much fuel we've used and write it in a log. Glad you had a calm trip from Naxos to Leros 😊

    We have also had a few shaking the head moments on our Moody in close proximity to super yachts. Most are very professional ....but occassionally.... 🙄. Good news is you didnt need the reo hook to un tangle anchors! Incidently we have the same Bruce anchor on our 29' and a professional Med skipper recently ated it up with Sarca and other newer designs. Golden rule we follow, let out 3 plus x the depth before putting any tension on the chain. Mixed comments on whether stainess mitigates the dog poo pile in the anchor well, might depend on the entry point and well shape. Gretta nearly always knockscfown the pile for mist if the retrival then dashes back for the helm... Keeps you fit! And we always set Anchor watch Pro quiet or hectic nights. Enjoying the episodes. Wayne and Gretta, Northern Navigator.

      Hey Wayne and Gretta, great to hear from you guys! Hope you're enjoying the rest of your season in Greece 😊 Where abouts are you now? Very glad we didn't have to deploy the reo hook to untangle anchors with the super yacht 😅 We have been really happy with our Bruce anchor too, haven't dragged yet 🤞 We also do 3-4x the depth minimum of chain and it's served us well. Good point about the size/shape of the anchor locker and hole - unfortunately our locker only just fits our 80m of chain so stainless might not solve our piling up problem and would cost us $$! I'm used to running down below and pushing over the pile now like Gretta 😅 We are in Turkey now and love it here! We have decided to haul the boat out in Leros for the winter. Might see you on Leros somewhere! When are you hauling out this year/launching again next year? 😊

    Hi guys, another good video. To suggestions that might make life easier for you. One is to get good quality stainless steel anchor chain to replace your gal chain as it will slither around in the anchor locker and will not pile up like was highlighted in this video. The other thing is to have a kedging anchor so you can pull yourself around to point into the swell so you will not rock 'n' roll if you have the same conditions again. Look forward to the next episode. Cheers from Newcastle Australia
