A Grilled Cheese sandwich and a bowl of Tomato Soup... absolutely classic.
Roasting corn on the cob is definitely the best way to have it. If you can find the ingredients, try elote.
Grilled seasoned corn on the cob is blessed in its flavors❤️
Betty Crocker is a fictional character that Gerneral Mills uses for a wide variety of products to make it sound like the items were made by a chef. The name has been used for decades and its an extremely well-known and very popular brand.
They also put out a pretty good cookbook in her name that has been through multiple editions.
Betty Crocker was figurehead of the company. Something like Ronald McDonald.
But there were ladies who worked behind the scenes to make the recipes "homemade".
They did miss Pillsbury as the third most popular pre-made mix next to Duncan Hines & Betty Crocker.
Smoked corn in the husk is the best. Soak in water for an hour, have a smoker/grill ready at 300°+, put on the racks and smoke/grill away for 30+ minutes. When done, remove the husks by pinching the top the back. Everything comes off very easily...
Im not sure what it is but roasting veggies does something completely MAGICAL to them. My boy hates squash, zucchini, bell peppers, and a few other veggies but when he was little, I roasted an entire sheet pan of them in the oven with olive oil and seasonings, and he was grabbing them off the pan and sucking them down at lightening speed once they were done! 😂 Its just crazy how roasting veggies completely changes the flavor and gives them a special taste. 😊
most brits steam their vegetables which is absolutely disgusting.
Roasting caramelizes the natural sugars in vegetables and makes them so flavorful. Roast Brussel sprouts and the otherwise disliked vegetables become wonderful. My daughter loved them.
Fresh sweet corn on the cob, roasted and covered in melted butter.
Freshly harvested sweet corn soaked in salt water, wrapped in tin foil, and steamed in the coals of the remains of a large autumn bonfire, then smothered in butter and salt... it makes you want to sacrifice a goat to the dark lord it is so good.
1. Mac and Cheese is so good!! My mom makes the best Mac and Cheese! Mac and Cheese with bacon is so good! I have Mac and Cheese at least 4-5 times a year. It’s a very good thanksgiving side dish! I actually hate the boxed Mac and Cheese. It tastes fake to me. I prefer homemade Mac and Cheese!
2. Brownies are delicious! I like to add some peanut butter drizzle. Sometimes my mom adds walnuts when she makes it.
3. Pepperoni pizza is so good! I like to order pizza from my local pizza place. I like a pepperoni pizza with red sauce of course and add ricotta along with the regular mozzarella cheese.
4. I love some donuts. I don’t get them often, but I like cream filled donuts a lot. Dunkin Donuts have donuts, breakfast sandwiches, bagels, muffins, coffee, hot chocolate, iced teas, a drink called a coolatta (it’s kinda like a slushie).
5. Cheeseburgers aren’t really my thing. The black bun was a special thing from Burger King for Halloween lol.
6. I like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches once in a while. I used to have it as a part of my lunch in school for sure! The uncrustable peanut butter and jelly sandwich is so good! The flavors of jelly can be different (strawberry, grape, raspberry, blackberry). I like grape jelly the most. I think it could be real.
7. Fried chicken…I like it boneless or in a sandwich. A fast food chain called Wendy’s has a great chicken sandwich with bacon, lettuce, and tomato in it too. I order it without the mayonnaise and cheese in it.
8. Grilled cheese sandwiches are amazing. I love to make it with cheddar cheese or mozzarella or Swiss cheese. I was at a restaurant in Miami and I had a grilled cheese that had caramelized onions in it and some tomato bisque on the side.
9. I love to eat hot dogs. I’m not into putting condiments so I eat it plain. It’s good to have at a barbecue for 4th of July. Just throw the hot dogs on the grill.
10. Corn on the cob is so good!! Put some butter on it and it’s good!
You sound like a psycho lmao. No burgers and you like hot dogs plain? You are a super villain arent you? 😂🤣
I like to add crumbled bacon to macaroni and cheese.
I was a kid in the '60s. Pb&j was a pretty standard lunchbox item. At home, grilled cheese and tomato soup were a pretty common lunch. I've made mac & cheese with ground beef (mince), tuna, hot dog slices, ground breakfast sausage, chopped ham,...
Yes, you have heard of cream gravy. It’s what we put on chicken fried steak and such.
I had a BBQ pulled pork Mac and cheese once in Nashville and it’s probably my favorite pairing with a meat.
I also made a southern style Mac and cheese over the holidays that used two types of cheese and creole seasoning. The heat on it was perfect and I plan to keep using that recipe.
You'd be hard-pressed to find aN American child who has never had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. its almost a rite of passage in the USA (along with Meatloaf!)
Maybe not so much with one who has a peanut allergy.
@@AC-ni4gtWhile that's true today, it simply wasn't the case 25 to 30 years ago. Kids only started developing allergies to peanuts in somewhat recent history. I have no idea why that's the case, but when I was growing up, I don't remember a single kid that had an issue with it. There are some theories, but I have no clue whether any of them are true.
Sometimes my dad would put the PB&J on toast. To a working class kid in Pittsburgh in the 1980s, this was fancy.
My grandmother would cut the grilled cheese (she called it toasted cheese) into a bunch of tiny pieces--like 20 of them. I probably haven't had one like that in 35 years.
The corn on the cob picture was coated in butter, scallions & Mexican Cotija cheese. 😋
So many variations, butter & dill is another favorite.
Ham/Gammon in mac and cheese is a great combination. Polish sausage/kielbasa is also a good pairing.
I'm 56 and had a PBJ about 4-5 days ago. Great quick Snack & easy to make too!
I like peanut butter and bacon and peanut butter and honey as well. And I'm 64 years old.
I'm lactose intolerant but I can't stay away from cheese. It's so good!😊
24:00 Sweet corn is not a preparation of corn, it's a breed of corn. Here in the USA, we generally grow field corn and sweet corn. Field corn is what is fed to animals, or used to make biodiesel, and other industrial uses. Field corn is not very tasty. Sweet corn is grown by people specifically to eat themselves. Sweet corn is still sweet corn whether or not the kernels are still attached to the cob or not.
I don't know about Mac and cheese, bu chili is my comfort food. I never start the day without it. The good thing is that it's as easy as opening a can and microwaving it. There is one brand that is far better than all others and they make about 10 different varieties.
And that brand would be....? 😊
I always put diced ham in our mac-n-cheese. The saltiness of the ham only enhances mac-n-cheese! As for "toasties", yes we have them. We use what we call a "sandwich maker" to make them. Nice thing about those is you can add whatever filling you want. You can make little pepperoni pizza pockets by adding marinara sauce, pepperoni and shredded mozzarella......sky is the limit. I also make open face grilled cheese in the oven using the grill. You take one slice of bread, top with shredded cheese and grill till cheese is bubbling.
Mac & cheese is one of my go-to comfort foods.
I add chicken, and spices to my mac & cheese. Spices like paprika, salt, pepper, oregano, parsley, etc.
As far as corn on the cob, add butter, and Old Bay. Boom! Delicious!
13:05..... "spunk" isn't what you think it means in the US. It means "courage", "spirit", or "determination". Not something that will get you demonetized.
The best way to roast corn on the cob is to leave it in the husk’s, remove the silk, soak it submerged in water for at least 20 minutes, then put on a grill. It’s smokey and delicious!
Here's the story of peanut butter, and why Americans love it so much. Peanuts were introduced as a diversification crop in the southern US, because cotton was so frequently destroyed by a pest called the boll weevil. To confuse the pest, farmers might plant cotton one year, and then something else the next year, and peanuts were often that something else. But what do you do with peanuts? That's when we got peanut butter. I don't know who was the first person to try peanut butter with jam, but they should be sainted. Point is, peanuts were a survival crop, and that's why peanut butter is treasured.
My ex wife is from Romania. I was pleasantly surprised to be able to buy a beer inside KFC when I was there.
Yep. You can put on beef, bacon bits, potatoes, and chicken in with Mac 'n' Cheese.
Don't forget chili-mac!
my local college had a food truck that only served sandwichs of mac and cheese mixed with pulled pork.
PBJ was fairly cheap when I was a kid. Add a banana or other fruit and you have a healthy lunch with all the food groups if you get an ice cold half pint of milk.
I hated pb&j when I was a kid. And I still do.
The great thing with grilled cheese is you don't need a special contraption to make them like with a toasty maker. Just throw the grilled cheese in a frying pan or a flat top. If you want to grill sweet corn, look into trying Mexican street corn, which is also known as elote.
I had something similar to elote before and it was like God Himself blessed the corn to be flavorful.
When I was growing up, my comfort foods were bologna and cheese, fried chicken, frozen pot pie, ice cream, Sugar Pops, Captain Crunch. The list goes on and on. Oh, and chocolate cake!😅
I boil my corn husk & all for 35 minutes. Then I Immediately roast them husk & all with the Indirect Heat method! Boiling is to make sure that the corn is thoroughly cooked. Roasting them afterwards caramelizes the already hot sugar in the corn and further sweetens the corn. By leaving the husk (wet from boiling) on it enables you to roast the corn longer with a lower risk of burning the corn itself. Roast them on low heat for minimum 50 minutes or a little longer. Longer low heat is best for enhancing sugar, but don't burn them!!! Peel husk back carefully and wrap it with a napkin to make a handle. I like mine a tad blackish on the outside, so before putting on napkin I place exposed corn over direct to FINISH them (Do not walk away at this step!!!!) I have special corn on the cob dish (A long ramekin) the length COTC as a butter plate. I roll the corn in it between bites for MAX BUTTERAGE!!! dash of salt.
Roasted corn on a grill so awesome. Boiled corn can make it taste water logged!
You don’t have to roast corn on a barbecue grill you can do it in your oven. Remove the corn’s husk and silk, wash the ears of corn and Pat dry. Preheat the oven to 425℉/218℃. Place corn in individual pieces of foil, brush with butter, and sprinkle with any seasonings you might like. Wrap each ear of corn up in the foil. then place them on a baking sheet pan. Bake for about 20-25 minutes. Remove and serve slightly cooled. Brush with more butter, if desired.
From childhood I remember eating peanutbutter and jam sandwiches and peanut butter and pickle sandwitches. That goes back to the 50's.
when I made boxed mac n cheese, I would stir in cooked ground beef and onions , or canned tuna and condensed cream of mushroom soup.
Hoffman's Snappy Griilers. Best dogs ever!
Introduced in 1934, the Snappy Grillers were modeled after traditional, white German sausages using a combination of veal, pork, egg whites, dried non-fat milk, and select spices. They are a hybrid sausage-frank with a smooth texture and size of a hot dog. The Snappy Grillers or “Coneys” as some call them are an Upstate New York tradition and hometown Syracuse favorite.
And a great way to do corn is soak the corn in the husk in luke-warm salt water for a couple of hours and then toss them, husk and all, onto a grill.
PBJ are the best. the trick for bringing it in a lunchbox is to put peanut butter on both slices a bread the the jelly keeps the bread from becoming soggy
If you want to try a really good hot dog, you have to go with 100% all beef, kosher, or kosher-style franks with the "skin", that is the casing. Skinless hot dogs just aren't as good. They also have to be grilled, not boiled or steamed. Find a Jewish deli in London and go there. Deli mustard and sauerkraut is traditional. Boar's Head is a good kosher-style version in the U.S., but I don't know if they are sold in the UK. If Nathan's Famous hot dogs are sold in UK fast food restaurants, try one there. I just did a quick check and apparently they have them in Southampton and Bournemouth and they are planning expansions outside of London in 2024, so check around.
Hebrew National is 💯% kosher beef. They don't use any fillers either. Plus they offer a bun length. Give them a try.
@@deborahasher176 Hebrew National hot dogs are good, but I find them a bit too garlicky for my tastes. I definitely prefer Nathan's and they have a bun length and a jumbo version, as well. Just like the HN dogs, they're all beef (kosher) with no added fillers. And we also prefer to grill them or fry them in a skillet until they're golden brown. Hmmm... now I want a hot dog. LOL
@@deborahasher176 I've eaten many Hebrew National hot dogs, but most sold are not the link type. I'm a Jew originally from NY (Brooklyn to be exact and we went to Nathan's in Coney Island all the time) and I grew up on that stuff. The best hot dogs are the skins (or link type), imo. My favorite is still with mustard and sauerkraut. You may or may not be aware, but HN was sold to a giant conglomerate many years ago. I believe that it's part of Conagra Foods now. Check the package. I did, years ago and was very surprised. I had heard that it was sold and it was.
The donuts were petrified…so it holds the content of the doughnut together by being petrified. That’s how they were able to discover them.
A PB&J sandwich would be in my lunch every once in a while. I'm not sure about all the others having 1500 before they are grown. Toasted cheese sandwich is a thing in the US but it has a long way to go to catch up with grilled cheese. No a toastie isn't a grilled cheese (that I have ever heard of) One comes from a fry grill & one comes from toasting.
Peanut butter is absolutely wonderful. I just had a PB&J yesterday. Delicious.
PB&J was probably the single most popular kids snack. Most kids were making them by themselves by the age of five or six.
Love corn on the cob but never roasted I will have to try it and grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup is the best.
About mac n cheese. There are hundreds of ways of making it. Most people make the boxed kind because its quick and easy. I prefer mine baked with a bread crumble on top. I sometimes have stewed tomatoes as a side dish for mac n cheese. I've added cut up ham on occasion.
Don't go near the box mac and cheese. I make mine homemade with grilled onions and grilled Anaheim green chilis. so so good!!!
You'd think, but our boxed is still better than what they get over there. It's still fine to have boxed if you don't have the time/money. It's definitely not top quality though.
As far as PB&J it was really common, though as a kid I preferred bologna and cheese with crunchy Cheetos. I used to press the Cheetos into the top of the bread.
Hot dogs imo are more of a sport spectator type food. I had them more than just during sport games but for example, if you're watching a baseball game, at home or at the field itself, it's more or less an American tradition to eat hot dogs while you watch
Brownies should be chewy. If you want cake texture, fix a damn cake!
I cook corn on the cob in the microwave, either in the husk if it's not too dry or wrapped in wax paper.
17:00 I agree, grilled cheese sandwiches should be simple. If you want something fancy, have an egg sandwich. Lots of different things are wonderful on an egg sandwich.
Make sure you have _creamy_ tomato soup (tomato bisque) with your grilled cheese sandwich.
Don't toast a peanut butter and jelly/jam sandwich. Blech.
Haven't you ever had toast with peanut butter on it for a quick breakfast or snack? It's so good! Of course, you have to put just a little bit of butter on the toast a soon as it pops up and then a generous slathering of peanut butter. I like to make 2 slices of toast and put PB on one slice and jelly/jam on the other. You can put them together to make a sandwich, but I like to keep them separate. Give it a try sometime. You might just be pleasantly surprised!
13:04 - This is how you know this video was made for Americans who speak American English. Over here, we tend to use that word to mean a kind of outspoken uniqueness. Sort of like saying someone's got moxie, but with a slightly different connotation. Though, why it's being said in this video, I don't know, because I haven't heard someone use that turn of phrase in well over a decade. Maybe two. I'm pretty sure we mostly stopped saying it some time in the late 90's.
Maybe Americans just met too many British people online and are self-conscious about saying it now.
Toasties would be like our toasted cheese. Basically a grilled cheese but the toast encapsulates the cheese so you have to be careful on the first bite bc the cheese pops out and can be hot.
General Mills is the actual company but the advertising department figured that housewives would probably want advice from a fellow woman with regards to food so Betty Crocker was invented in 1921.
You need to try hot dogs here! What we DON'T do is buy hot dogs in a jar so there's that.
That pause you had at 23:00 looks like it could be "elotes" (roughly pronounced "a-LOW-tays" since it is Mexican). It's corn, mayo and chili powder, queso fresco (literally meaning fresh cheese), lime, cilantro, and crema or Sour cream. It wasn't very popular until recently in the US, and is mostly marketed as Mexican Street Corn or just Street Corn.
Hi Thurs, I have seen hot dogs in the UK and they were in a jar of water and looks like shit. Hot dogs in the US are sold in plastic pages and are damp but not floating. A good hot dog will actually snap when you bite it. As you would expect there are many different brands and there are many choices. I prefer Nathans. Add a good homemade chilli and some cheese and it is heaven. Here in Kentucky where KFC was invented and where the corporate headquarters sits, (I will not eat that crap), my comfort food is a good taco and a Margaretta on the rocks with salt. Hell yes!
Meatloaf with mashed potatoes
Hell yeah!
From what I've seen, Hot Dogs in the UK are sold in jars and cans. That's somewhat odd. You've probably never tasted a "Premium" hot dog. There are several brands in the US that are considered "Premium". One of the best brands is Hebrew National. BTW, their hot dogs are Kosher.
I love Mac and Cheese with sausages cut up in it. Homemade not box made mac and cheese is the best.
12:06 i'm lovin some jif peanut butter...
Mac and cheese with pulled pork is pretty good.
A package of Kraft made to order, add a can of cream of chicken, a can of tuna (my fav) or chicken, and a can of peas. Mix it up, and eat, or cover with bread crumbs, and bake!👍🎃✌🗽
I like corn boiled because I want it less firm than roasted
I love eating Popeye's Spicy fried chicken... I just don't love how I feel afterwards. But damn, it's bloody delicious. Pro tip: try honey for the first coat of home made fried chicken.
If i make boxed or stoffers mac n cheese, i definitely add more sharp cheddar cheese. More often i just make it homemade, creamy cheesy, some times add ham, bacon....
A tablespoon of sour cream in the boxed kind makes it lots better.
Grilled ham and cheese sandwich is just as good as a regular grilled cheese sandwich in my opinion 😊
Chicken gravy is the same thing, but it's just made with chicken stock instead of beef. I have NEVER heard it called cream gravy.
No, no sane person adds anything to mac and cheese unless it's lobster. Brownies were invented at the Palmer House hotel in Chicago. For a proper excellent hot dog, you need a Chicago hot dog. (No ketchup since they include fresh tomato slices.)
I don’t know bacon is pretty good.
That's why there are hamburgers AND cheeseburgers, lol
I'm not a fan of macaroni & cheese. I prefer its ancestor, pasta with butter and lots of parmesan.
For the umpteenth time, you can make gravy out of any meat drippings, not just beef (traditional English brown gravy). You can use chicken, sausage, turkey, veal, pork, ham. White gravy used with chicken is basically a béchamel with chicken juices.
Avoid like the plague those "things" called "American hotdogs" actually purchase ballpark brand, Nathan's, Sabrat, maybe wrap the hotdog in American bacon, fry it till brown, find a good brand of hotdog chilli.
Next time you make a burger at home put 2 slices of cheese on it instead of 1 and cross them so that it makes like a star. You will thank me later…Its liking pouring a bunch of nacho cheese on it. So much better than a regular cheeseburger. Double cheese, trust me.
cream gravy is just another name for white gravy
IMO, adding meat or extras to a grilled cheese changes it to a "melt". As in , turkey melt, patty melt, tuna melt etc. Grilled cheese is JUST cheese.
I bought a cheeseburger the other day but there was no cheese in it so I went to complain. They told me that the cheese was INSIDE the patty, can you believe that? How can you tell the difference between a hamburger and cheeseburger if you can't see the cheese?
Chili cheese hotdog top with onions and bacon bits…….
Mine's a Sonoran dog: Bacon wrapped on the grill, topped with pinto beans, onions, tomatoes, and a variety of additional condiments, often including mayonnaise, mustard, and jalapeño salsa. My favorite vendor skips the jalapeno salsa and serves it with grilled jalapenos you can put on the bun or eat separately. I also like Chicago style dogs.
My dad loved anchovies, fish, on his pizza.... yikes, myself, i wouldn't touch it.
yeah the b-roll footage in that video is random as hell showing other dishes
No, cheese does not come on every Hamburger. We have Chicken Gravy at KFC in the U.S because not all gravy's taste good with every type of meat. The corn you asked about was Mexican Street Corn.
Bacon bits in macaroni and cheese
There are great brands of hot dogs made with quality meat. Nathans is an all beef hot dog and are kosher approved. Um!
Most Americans will choose the burger over a dog any day
Chocolate anything is a comfort food
Some moms don't know how to make frid chicken.
Put ham on your grilled cheese. 👍👍
No one adds gummy bears to the brownies
I like most of these, with a few adjustments....I can't stand the taste of mayo, so I definitely wouldn't want it on a grilled cheese sandwich and also not on corn on the cob.....fried chicken: when I was a kid, I liked KFC, but I sort of lost my taste for it. I strongly prefer grilled or roasted chicken these days. Or BBQ chicken. 🙂
For macaroni and cheese...I dunno, I liked it as a kid but I'm not too interested in it as an adult. Maybe if it had a bunch of pepper and herbs on it.
PB & J is still awesome, although I haven't had one in many years. 🙂
Lunch or snack.
Kraft Mac n Cheese -the cheap one- is not real Mac n Cheese. Betty Crocker and Duncan Hines both dominate that market. Almost every lunch PBJ and soup, sometimes tuna salad or grilled cheese, Chili dogs with cheese reign. Corn dogs was left out-- booo! Theyre great and tacos and burritos.
Always buy your American cheese at the deli. Kraft cheese is questionable as far as cheese is concerned.
Did she say spunk 😂
Nobody puts meat in Mac and Cheese....Nobody I know! Why did you have to bring up KFC? KFC is not our go to Fried Chicken spots in America...There're thousands of mom and pop Fried Chicken spots and Soul Food joints all over America!
Bacon. It’s just all about the bacon.
Boiling things other than eggs is a waste. Steam your vegetables at the very least. Boiling and steaming are NOT the same! Steamed vegetables taste much better.
When i make grilled cheese, ill use mayo instead of butter on the outside to brown it.
Im American and I detest mac and cheese
Nah pbj sandwiches never a comfort food for me. Hamburger ,corn, and mashed potatoes fits that bill. Who started this where americans eat such and such?
I hate it when people try to fancy up things that are simple. Putting a thin slice of ham or turkey on a grilled cheese is pushing it to the limit. If you feel the need to put caviar, guac and sardines on your grilled cheese you are just an asshole.
mac and cheese is not a comfort food... i dont think ive ever seen anyone set down and just eat mac and cheese... this list is wack and not true. They did get the PBJ right tho..
tuna is good in mac n cheese...
Pepperoni pizza is a no from me I can only handle it if there's only a few pepperoni. Its not a good flavor
Too bad. Pepperoni is the best topping.
