    5:35 that was in fact a tornado. Hurricane Milton spawned some violent tornadoes, unlike those seen in your regular tropical system. Some dry air got pulled into the mix so the atmosphere grew REALLY unstable.

      When a tsunami is forecast for California there will probably be two people who make the news. One is the newscaster who just HAS to get closer, and the other is a surfer who is deluded enough to try and ride the wave.

      I lived in the Tampa Bay area for about 29 years and most of that was in Bradenton. Bradenton Beach has been my meditation place for years. It's killing me to see all this and Helene! When they said it was a cat 5 on Monday, I cried. It felt like my life was going to be wiped away. It's going to be hell to fix all this back to somewhat what it was. Can I hope more is done for the marine and wildlife?

    In 1961, Hurricane Carla hit the Texas coast. I was only 5 years old at the time. We lived in a small wooden house in Baytown, TX. My dad took us to shelter in the church, which was a substantial brick structure. When it passed, we drove to Channelview and the damage there was horrific, mostly from tornadoes spawned by Carla.
    It made quite an impression on me, as a young boy. Hurricanes and tornadoes are nothing to mess about with. Prayers for safety and speedy recovery for all Floridians adversely affected by Milton.

    I live in central Florida on the east coast. I was up until 6am due to wind, banging and debris hitting the house. It was only a Cat 1 but we live in a pre fab home. The roof is damaged and my front garden is gone. A few homes were destroyed. A tornado ripped thru here and close by. A bar on the Indian River. It was flooded with water above ankles. People were still partying. My parents moved here in 1983. I have never heard of so many tornadoes before.

    Granted, these hurricanes can be very scary, especially if you have never been in one before. But, for those of us who have experienced them a number of times (like these reporters), there are precautions someone can take to avoid getting hurt. Being aware of your surroundings, knowing the wind speed, avoiding the wind and debris by standing behind solid structures, remaining at a higher elevation above water levels or floods and knowing where the eye wall is are things to be considered. But, it is better to be safe than sorry and either get out of town or bunker down. I applaud these reporters who put their lives on the line to keep the public informed.

    Hey Georgia🇺🇸 native here, I live an hour from Florida. I’m not a meteorologist but all my life we have dealt with hurricanes. I have memories as a child hiding in the closet in the hallway hearing the newscast alarm for tornadoes & my grandmas weather radio.
    Just some info for you tornadoes are common with hurricanes when the conditions are right. Hurricanes are essentially a large tornado 🌪️ with water from the ocean pushed onto land and tornadoes babies appear with the right conditions (humidity,etc). It’s gotten worse throughout my lifetime.
    This year we had 3 hurricanes and 2 were pretty bad for my area. Hurricane Helene was scary I slept on the floor because that way I could hide under my bed & had closer access to the hallway for a quick escape, it was so loud you could hear the violent wind rattling the windows & walls. It was unexpectedly bad for us we didn’t have power for 4 days. Luckily for us no damage to our homes and we live inland. Others were not as lucky but we’ve seen communities gather and help each other.
    Teachers going to underserved communities to give water to students because they had no clean water. Churches opening their doors for charging stations, AC, and giving out necessities. Non profits and other organizations coming to bring relief. Power companies from out of state on the interstate helping those without power & debris clean-up.
    This is proof of climate change. We as a whole need to be better stewards of our environment and what our actions to it does. To not address it with storms developing like this, is criminal. Just my hot take 🔥

    The winds on the coast only got up to 101mph, and here, inland in Orlando we only had winds that were 1/2 that. It wasn’t really that bad. Only 1/4 of the state lost power. We’ve had much worse.
    Also, Remember our hurricane season goes from June to November, so we could still get more.

    A hurricane is essentially an extreme severe thunderstorm. Thus for, like other severe thunderstorms, they often spawn tornadoes. There were reports of at least 50 tornadoes during Milton, one being about a mile wide. Most occurred ahead of the storm in central and the east coast of Florida as it made landfall on the west coast.

    I have a "fun" story about a hurricane tornado that you might get a kick out of.
    I'm on the Texas Gulf coast, and we had Nicholas hit us in 2021. It was only a cat 1, so none of us were really worried. I rode Harvey out and didn't flood, so I expected it to pass on by. It hit in the evening and into the night. I was alone at my house on the phone with my mom and sister when I decided to go outside and look around. I don't have any trees near where I was going, so I wasn't worried. Like you said, we get pretty used to this. We know what to avoid. I walked out into the street and looked down it, then I heard the most bone-chilling noise.
    I've been in tornadoes before, but this was different. It sounded like Cthulhu had risen down the street from my house. I ran back inside and the power went out right after. I got my dogs and we stayed in the hallway that night, the only room without a window.
    Turns out, a tornado had spawned in the hurricane and took out a giant transformer that supplied power to the whole town. We were without power for several days.
    But it was so wild to look down that dark street and hear something so eery!
    We don't normally get tornadoes here that are strong enough to enter towns, so that hurricane was really causing trouble.
    Everyone was fine, though! My mom lost ten trees and I spent the next few weeks helping her and my older neighbors clean their yards up. I had a little roof damage, but I needed a new roof, anyway. We had a direct hit from Beryl this year and I lost a small tree. I didn't like that tree to begin with, so Beryl did me a favor. The places on the edges of Beryl had a worse time because their power company wasn't prepared AT ALL. I know it's bizarre to think, but we are pretty used to it all. Our houses are built to withstand this kind of stuff. We just can't withstand the cold in them. Hahaha

    @skodiakman 2 дня назад

    Rode this out in a mobile home up in northeast Florida. Still kind of strong when it got up here. We lost a good bit of trees around here and took out power from a lot of people in my area. My home did well except for some skirts out of place. I felt a couple good gusts and freaked me out a bit with the noise, especially because we lost power right before the stronger winds and gusts. A lot of flooding too.

  • @JJfromPhilly67
    @JJfromPhilly67 3 дня назад

    Milton packed quite a punch in addition to the storm surge, rain, and wind, it spawned all those tornadoes which could have event worse winds. The biggest factor in these coastal hurricanes is the storm surge. A storm surge is not just flooding, rather it is like a mini tsunami. The storm just whips up sea water and pushes the water ashore with force so it can smash its way around. It is not like a river flooding which is a rising of the water, a storm surge is exactly that a surge of water powered by the sustained winds of the hurricane. This is why they tell people on the coast to evacuate. While the inland areas get tremendous wind and rain, they don't get the storm surge.

  • @cypher515
    @cypher515 2 дня назад

    North Orlando here -- power out for about 24 hours from what we can tell -- we basically stopped tracking it at the 16 hour mark and went to my sister's house because her power was on and my mom needs a CPAP machine to get real sleep. (Ironically the next morning as I was preparing to go home to check on it her power blipped, but only for five minutes. The thought is that most likely it was the power company needing to turn her street off to finish working on the next street over.) Not as much damage or flooding as from Matthew a few years back, and I credit the path -- but also it lost SO much energy over Tampa and as it made its way across the peninsula. Always hard to figure out how damage is going to work, though -- my brother (ironically named Matthew, less ironic in this hurricane than six years ago) was closer to the eye and lost power for 12 hours, we lost it for 24-plus, our sister (further away) lost it for 5 minutes and other family didn't lose it at all, closer and _further_ from the path. So direct 95 percent of your prayers and positive energy towards Tampa, St. Petersburg, and the rest of the bay.

    "Storm surge" is not just normal beach waves, it is more similar to a tsunami (but in miniature). It is sea water driven by the wind. If you've ever blown on a bowl of hot soup, you've seen how you can create a lowered area of soup under your breath with a raised ridge just at the edge of where your breath starts to mix into the normal air.
    Storm surge is like that, but with a storm hundreds of miles across and a "bowl" the size of the ocean.
    It's more complicated than that as sea level under the storm is usually higher than the surrounding sea, and there is on-shore v. off-shore winds, etc. but as an analogy just imagine the hurricane being a strong breath on an enormous bowl of soup, and being pushed on shore much the way a tsunami breaches onto land.

Took me over an hour to creep home this morning back to St Lucie. No power, but it’s back on now. So many tornadoes. Unprecedented here, and im 42 born and raised. I feel like nobody realizes the threat because their looking at the storm and not the wind field when looking at the news. All of the snowbirds and permanent retirees didn’t evacuate here. We truly didn’t have a warning until last minute, if you don’t know better to NOT trust the forecast.
    Edit to clarify Snowbirds- elderly people who own second homes here. It’s about the time of year they start coming down here. It’s not derogatory, it’s just a term here in south Florida.

    Hurricanes always bring tornados. I'm inland enough to have only seen remnants of these & that is bad enough. My understanding (and experience getting relatives out) is you have to use your head. A category 1 or even 2 that is supposed to loose strength, may not even warrant evacuation in areas not prone to flooding. If there is any doubt, move a little inland or maybe a lot if it is a monster. Don't wait too long. Nothing is worse than trying to survive on in a car.

    5:32 If you have to ask, it's a funnel cloud. (It's only a tornado if the funnel extends to teh surface.) Tropical storms/Hurricanes/Tropical cyclones/Typhoons are _huge_ storm systems, often 600-900 km across, with a calm central "eye" which can be seen from satellite views. These storms impose their will in a huge area, and the edges are were instability is likely to cause things like tornadoes to form. By contrast, tornadoes are rarely wider than 1 km across and usually are much less than that. Tornadoes are also much shorter lived, and affect a much tighter area, usually just the vicinity of where the funnel is on the ground. Disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes, mudslides, and floods are so devastating because they can affect such a huge swath of area and people at a single moment.

A tree fell over down the road. Bunch of branches and some power lines are down. The coast got hammered pretty hard but it dropped to a 1 near mid Florida and left the east coast a tropical storm. When you look at the shape of Florida and look at the size of these storms, the best you can do is find a place where the effects will be less than where you live. In Florida there is no such thing as escaping the storm most of the time. It's just a matter of getting Inland to a solid building that is raised above normal ground level. I never had an explaination of why tornados love mobile home parks so much. Anyone got the reasons? Miami was fine, but you don't know where it will really hit. Many times you go to an area and then the storm changes and your no longer "safe" but directly in danger. I think thats why so many people just stay home, it's like, no matter where you go you are in danger because of uncertainty.

    The storm chaser running the channel www.youtube.com/@ReedTimmerWx may be willing to do an interview and or accept a reaction to one of the videos where he shows his vehicles, if nothing else it would be worth sending him a message and explaining you are a UK reactor interested in learning about how storm research has evolved over the past 10-15 years or so.

    The state response is so different. Florida is doing everything right as far as hurricane response goes.
    North Carolina botched it.
    (The federal government is incompetent, as Ohio and Maui showed us)
    What a difference a good governor makes!

      Of course the state response is different. We're talking about Florida, where hurricanes are frequent and expected. The building codes and infrastructure are made for this. The mountains of TN and NC don't have that same luxury since they don't typically get hit with hurricanes. Just the sheer number of trees and the mountain terrain should tell you that the damage will be different. Those roads have been known to have rockslides on a good day. Milton turned out to be way less destructive than Helene. Florida is not dealing with windy little mountain roads that got destroyed. Getting to trapped people there is a whole lot easier. Do we really need to be campaigning right now? 😒

    Luckily, dry air started riping Milton apart & lowered it to Cat 3. The storm surge wasn't as bad in the highest populated area. Still bad, but could have been much worse.

      And people may not apply because the liars are also claiming that the 750$ emergency money from FEMA has to be paid back or they'll take all your property. IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE PAID BACK

    There were 3 millinon people without power. Thankfully, all my friends and family are fine! Tomorrow sometime, News channel 8 WFLA will most likely fly their helicopter over the area. They had their helicopter fly north so it wouldn't get damaged. Tomorrow they're coming back and should do a fly over.

      So when why have there been a few confirmed deaths with this storm? Just because it was downgraded to a Category 3, doesn’t mean that it wasn’t still dangerous. “It wasn’t even that bad” yeah okay tell that to the Floridians who either lost their businesses, lost their homes, lost loved ones, or are still cleaning up from Helene but then got hit by Milton. Your comment is very disrespectful and out of touch. You might have thought that the storm wasn’t that bad, but those who experienced severe flooding and damage to their homes, and who might’ve lost loved ones……it was bad.

    The "reporting from the scene" aspect of hurricanes pisses me off so much, it's so stupid and pointless. People know what a hurricane looks like they happen all the time. It's just dumb having people there in evacuated areas to have "first hand" accounts

    Not to be rude but if you would be respectful to the broadcasters, you would have answers to your questions. They aren’t there for “clicks”. They are there risking their lives to try to keep others safe and you aren’t even respecting them enough to listen to what they are reporting

      I never thought I’d have to explain how visual representation affects people but here we go. Just because you can’t see the bigger image doesn’t mean there isn’t one. When these reporters are seen it puts into perspective how bad the weather is which therefore makes other people stop and think “oh wow that is really bad. Maybe I should listen and stay inside/evacuate.” It can also help people from all over the world see how bad it is which often times leads to people from around the world sending donations
