I'd call it a psychological thriller. It won the top five Oscars, Best Actor, Actress, Screenplay, Director and Picture. Hannibal is Anthony Hopkins. Great movie. Thank you.

What makes this false figure believable is that Hannibal is completely absent for extended periods of the movie twice, once for almost 20 minutes and another for over 25 minutes. Also his first appearance isn't until almost 12 minutes in.
The ten scenes he's in counting from when he's first seen/heard till he's last seen/heard in each actually add up to 34 minutes, 54 seconds (not counting the end credits sequence).
Here's the breakdown from my DVD giving start - end timestamps = duration (running total):
      11:55 - 18:38 = 6:43 (6:43) "May I see your credentials?"
      26:54 - 30:20 = 3:26 (10:09) "Your bleeding has stopped."
      50:03 - 55:20 = 5:17 (15:26) "Quid pro quo"
      57:17 - 58:20 = 1:03 (16:29) "His first name is Louis"
      58:49 - 1:02:10 = 3:21 (19:50) "Where will it tickle you?"
      1:04:03 - 1:10:45 = 6:42 (26:32) "Good evening, Clarice."
      1:11:23 - 1:15:10 = 3:47 (30:19) "Mind the drawings please."
      1:16:52 - 1:19:31 = 2:39 (32:58) "Talk to him!"
      1:21:13 - 1:21:33 = 0:20 (33:18) "Pulse 84."
      1:47:26 - 1:49:02 = 1:36 (34:54) "I'm having an old friend for dinner."

Great reaction! The ending where Hannibal walks away blending into the crowd as he follows his next victim is one of the most creepy scenes in film for me. It subtly shows how real serial killers aren't walking around with Raving LOONY in their faces but look like anyone in the crowd until its too late. That was the most disturbing scene in the film for me.

Then there’s Manson. He had a face teeming with raving looney (some genuine, some an act), but he can’t be officially deemed a serial killer. There were some murders that he seems to be a compelling suspect for, but there has been no way of actually proving he personally committed them. Even if it could be proven, he might still have not necessarily fit into the category of serial killer.

The original author Thomas Harris even became so taken with him that he becomes the hero of the next book and he and Clarice end up running off together to have Murder Babies. It's a terrible book, and a huge testament to Ridley Scott that he was able to make a just middling film out of it.

The thing is, though, Clarice isn't what he expected or is prepared to deal with because she has no inner corruption for him to feed off. So the balance between them is surprisingly even, and this is what intrigues him about her.

I've thought about this myself and I do see similarities between Clarice and Belle - both strong brainy brunettes, both outsiders within their immediate communities (Clarice as a woman in the male-dominated FBI, Belle as a bookworkm in a provincial village), both enter into bargains with perceived monsters in order to help free someone, both develop better understandings of said monsters than the men who claim to know better (Jack Crawford/Gaston), both have fathers who figure into their central motivations (Clarice's father dying influencing her decision to go into law enforcement while also contributing to her psychological issues; most of Belle's major decisions involving saving Maurice), and with both being the central heroes to resolve the conflict (Clarice for obvious reasons, Belle by opening her heart to love and thereby breaking the spell)

    Eww... Fava beans. Gross. 😝
Fun Fact: The rules for speaking with Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Sir Anthony Hopkins) is the same as the rules for speaking with Ethan Powell in Instinct (1999), a role also played by Hopkins.
Awards Milestone Fact: This is one of three movies to win the top five Oscars: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Screenplay. The others are It Happened One Night (1934) and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (1975).
What Script Fact: Jodie Foster claims that during the first meeting between Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling, Sir Anthony Hopkins's mocking of her southern accent was improvised on the spot. Foster's horrified reaction was genuine since she felt personally attacked. She later thanked Hopkins for generating such an honest reaction.
Law Enforcement Cooperation Fact: The real-life FBI's Behavioral Science Unit assisted in the making of this movie. The FBI saw it as a potential recruiting tool to hire more female agents. They were very impressed by this movie's accuracy in depicting criminal investigations, serial killers, and their victims. However, they disagreed with Clarice (Jodie Foster) discovering Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine) on her own, because inexperienced agents would never be sent out alone on dangerous assignments.

The story was inspired by the time the FBI asked Ted Bundy to create a profile for the green river killer, when they eventually arrested the green river killer they realized that Bundys profile was pretty accurate.
The character of Buffalo bill was inspired by a few killers in kidding Ed Gein who besides killing 3 people would also dig up recently buried bodies and create things from their body parts like a pair of gloves and a lamp shade made from skin and furniture made from bones and skulls.
The scene where Catherine is kidnapped is inspired by Bundy would fake having a broken arm and act like he was struggling to get something in his car so women would offer to help and then he would knock them over the head and push them into the back of his car.
I read a few months ago that the actors who play Buffalo bill and Catherine actually dated during the making of the movie.

*_I’m sure there are many out there that put it in the Horror category, but I agree with you that it is actually not so much horror (Like An American Werewolf in London, Evil Dead, Final Destination, etc) but much more a Psychological Thriller (Like Se7en, Memento, Misery, etc.). Many movies, including some listed above have their feet more or less planted in both categories, of course, but Silence of the Lambs is really more about the atmosphere, the mystery, the anticipation than the couple of gruesome moments in it that are there to confirm Hannibal’s violent nature, even if they high points of the movie_*

Manhunter (1986) was the first film to feature Hannibal Lecter, played by a different actor of course. It was based on the book Red Dragon, that the book Silence of the Lambs was a sequel to. It would later be remade, with Anthony Hopkins in the role of Lecter, under the title Red Dragon, due to the popularity of this film. Personally, I didn't much enjoy Hannibal (2001), the sequel to this film, but I did enjoy Red Dragon (2002). I couldn't tell you if it's better or worse than Manhunter though, as I haven't seen that version.

@@mrtveye6682 No animosity meant toward you and I apologize if my comment seemed to be bickering, it is simply the true explanation of how Lector gained access to the pen. Barney was courteous and respectful to Hannibal, they got along well. The novel explains their relationship. I have also read many comments (not by you of course) that assume Buffalo Bill was simply toying with Clarisse in the basement scene using night vision and putting his hand out toward her face and hair, this is also explained in the novel, Bill liked her hair very much and was deciding not to shoot her with a head shot. Her body was too small for his purposes but he coveted her hair.

This movie is a psychological suspense thriller, not really a horror movie. I'd also call it a masterpiece.
Jack Crawford dared to challenge Hannibal Lecter to a mental chess game. Hannibal did not want Crawford to get any of the credit for the Buffalo Bill case. Crawford ended up being just another chess piece on the board. I love the scene where Crawford goes to the wrong house and says "Clarice!". That is the moment he realized he had been duped and Clarice was in danger.
Hannibal knew from the beginning that Crawford would continue to use Clarice for thankless grunt work while positioning himself for the glory. This is how Hannibal knew to arrange that Clarice would be sent to Bill's house. She would either die with honors (disgracing Jack Crawford), or actually make the capture (taking all the credit).
Hannibal even knew when Clarice was lying to him about the relocation reward. He gave the clue during the Quid Pro Quo game "Don't lie to me or I'll know it."

By the way, this is a pretty rewatchable film. One of the details that is easily lost is the face-skinning blade that is used. It's a pen-knife that the disemboweled older guard has. Fine, sharp and small blade, capable of making sharp turns around noses, eye lids, lips, ears, etc. After Lecter beats him to death ijn the cell, Lecter hears the anguished cries outside the cell. He finds that pen-knife, retrieves it and says, "Ready when you are, Sgt. Pembrey." This film's follow-up HANNIBAL offers some additional details on historic use of disembowelment as a sign of final disrespect, especially for one certain Italian family.

When this was released, there were some LGBTQ activists that were protesting. Because it drew a parallel between transness, or even queerness, and violence. And the whole psychotic killer in drag or being trans trope was a real issue back then.
But instead of being pissy about it, the director actually listened snd figured he had to do something to show a more humane LGBTQ story. And his next movie was Philadelphia. You know, the one with Tom Hanks as a man dying from AIDS.

One of the fascinating aspects to me, and I love to hear other opinion, was Lector’s obvious dissatisfaction with modern psychology.. Chemical imbalances, or even dealing with rampant narcissism.. Even though he was a narcissist..
But clinical situations with normal people like Starling, dealing with a psychological issue kinda fascinated him, IMO.. And I love the way that plays out..
I do think it helped that he liked her from the jump, because she didn’t back down..

All the times I have watched this film and I just now added up the entire time line and it doesn't make sense. The woman pulled out of the river that had been there about a week was his first victim (the diamond shaped pattern on the buttocks matches the diamond shaped markings Clarise finds on the dress in the closet) they say Bill keeps his victims alive for three days before he kills them. Then there is the newspaper headline saying Bill Skins Fifth. That would make Katherine his sixth (wouldbe) victim. So there would be four victims in between when he first dumped his first victim and the discovery of the body. Four times three (days kept alive between kidnapping and killing) is twelve which is closer to two weeks than one week and that is assuming he didn't take any days off in between any of the kidnappings.

Jodie Foster likes to continually move forward in her career and decided not to play Clarice again in the sequel Hannibal, so she was replaced by Julianne Moore. But she did finally return to the role more recently for a sketch on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2017. It's not very funny, but I do highly encourage any fans to watch it just to see Foster's ability to perfectly capture every single nuance of her original performance as if she'd just done it yesterday.

This movie made such an impact (positive and negative) on pop culture. Like you said, there were lines you've heard before but didn't know this was their source. When you first see Hannibal standing in his cell, Hopkins thought it would be creepier to stand in the center. It gives off a certain uncomfortable feeling that his cell was just a set and Hannibal was the actor in it.
This movie was the first of it's kind to get a Best Picture Oscar. Either being considered a thriller, horror, or drama it is a genre film. Which had always been over looked by the Academy (who in my own opinion are a bunch of out of touch elitist snobs 😏). And it won all the awards that year.
Yeah with this film and PSYCHO predating it a bad light was used as Transgender folks are killers and unstable. There were pickets and boycott's to this film by the LGBT community and their ally's. But all involved with the film denounced the label of it being "bigoted" and with the co-lead being a Lesbian in real life (and Starling was in a relationship with her female roommate) it was put to rest.
If you get a chance check out the IMDB page of the cast. Jonathon Demme is one of those who likes to work with the same folks, ie Chris Issak (the singer) pops up in a lot of Demme's films.
And thank you so much for reviewing this, Sam. You did a great job and the editing is so tight. Ego superbus sum vobis.

When you see the follow-up to this film, HANNIBAL, there is a more detailed discussion about disembowelment, especially one Italian family's history with it. In addition, there's a reminder that, in many of the world's finest restaurants, chefs will appear table-side to prepare favorite portions of a meal. HANNIBAL, while Julianne Moore is a different actress for Clarisse and made me change my expectations, it offers up enough baddies to move my expectations aside and go with the film's new 'feel'.

    1. The lisping sound Hopkins makes after he says, 'I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti." is the first scene he and Foster did together and he wanted to freak her out, so her reaction is real.
    2. Ted Levine/Buffalo Bill was so disturbing that he received death threats after this was released.
    3. The FBI actually let them use their Quantico facility to film.
    4. In the book Crawford did have a "thing" for Clarice.
    5. "I'm coming to get you Murdock". The late Charles Napier/Lt. Boyle played Murdock in Rambo First Blood II. A great first time/share.
    6. Everybody is hitting on Clarice but IRL hitting on Foster is a waste of time and effort. She doesn't fly that way. 🙄 She has been married to a woman since it became legal in Caliphony.
    7. Dr. Lecter was treating Clarice
    8. Others will pass this to you as well but: This movie won ALL 5 of the big Oscars.😎 Levine should have gotten best supporting.

Wow, this movie. The portrayal of Buffalo Bill's character upset a lot of trans people. But what I find to be interesting is that there's nothing inherently wrong about what or who Buffalo Bill is. They just took a person who has certain interests and made him a serial killer, making woman suits, having a Nazi item, etc. If he didn't do any of that, he would be harmless. Hannibal, on the other hand, yes to deal with that mind f*ckery is very disturbing. They also gave Buffalo Bill emotional problems to top it off. Glad you've seen it! Missed you too🥰☮️👊

5:48 - He definitely says "guts". That part has always bothered me, because he definitely didn't say "c*nt" - I don't know why they didn't just dub over his line. Also a few minutes later, when Hannibal goes on that monologue about her dad ... none of it is correct. I feel like Hopkins just improvised that scene or something. Or maybe they changed the backstory after filming his part, because none of what he says is correct, her dad was a cop, not a coal miner.
