    Great review! The Brush and Pencil Powder Blender needs to have a fine spray of Brush and Pencil “texture fixative” between each layer though. You really need the whole kit to use them as intended. It is an entirely different technique which is amazing. Also with the powder blender it needs to be used very sparingly, you shouldn’t see dust. Like you said it is best with a texture paper like Uart 600 or the like. I find it brilliant for larger backgrounds and the initial layers for a portrait. Would love you to do a review on the whole Brush and Pencil Kit Kirsty. I think you will like it very much.

    use the brush and pencil with a pastel blending sponge, it works better than the brush or the the blending stump

    Got a colour shaper for my pastels, it’s pretty good, but it’s no surprise it’s not good fo CPs.
    Another helpful video.....cheers Amie x

    Thank you for this brilliant video, Amie. I've recently taken out some coloured pencils that were gifts, and unused till now (I'm primarily a watercolour / graphite / pen & ink artist), so I've been trying to pick up information from various coloured pencil artists - and so far, this is the only one I've come across that deals with blending tools in such a clear way!
    Being a newcomer on a very tight budget, I've stopped the video at times and looked hard at the different swatches from the same angle. My own preference by this 'test' is the Derwent. I could see a much smoother blend than the Caran d'Ache. The stump looked very grainy by comparison, but it's worked well for me so far on my Derwent pencils. My only issue with that is the time it takes to get rid of one colour to blend the next.
    So now I ask myself: do I buy a stump for every colour - and that would be a lot of stumps (no, I'm not serious!!! ) - be more patient with them, or treat myself to the Derwent blender....

    I think you might be pressing too lightly. The Derwent blender does an excellent job of blending Polychromos for me without flattening the tooth of the paper or creating a waxy buildup.

      C. Jay Conrod oh it does an excellent job when you layer more for sure 👍🏻 when I layered on top the first blending session and blended once more, it worked a lot better 😊

    Ouch!😀 this was an excellent comparison until you got to the powder blender. It’s not ever meant to be used on regular paper. It needs to be used on a hard sanded surface, something that doesn’t bend. It only takes a tiny, tiny amount to blend. You’re using enough for a very large drawing with many, many layers! 😀 I had a hard time with it too at first. You’re supposed to spray it with the brush and pencil fixative in bebetween layers, if it gets to the point where there is dust you haven’t sprayed it often enough. This also takes quite a bit of practice. The spray fixative is a big challenge at first too!! It’s easy to give up on it until you realise that it’s a totally unique product, so any methods you’re used to won’t work with it. Once I got that it got easier. Now I love it. I don’t know of anything else that can give such a soft blended effect. The learning curve is surprisingly high👍👍👍

      @Amiehowardart  5 лет назад

      Yup, definitely a huge learning curve!! Tbh I’ve never got on with the brush and pencil products, I have the textured fixative as well, used on both pastelmat and Fabriano...definitely doesn’t work for Fabriano 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ completely agree, the products are great and can work well given the patience but they’re just not for me 😝😝

    “Sofft” tools (used to blend pan pastels) are useful for blending the blending powder. Also, you don’t need to use much. :-)

    I think those colour shapers are designed in mind for pastels. I watch a lot of Colin Bradley who uses FC Pitt and he uses them all the time. I wonder if the powder is also for pastels? Anyway, good vid Amie thanks for sharing

    • @Amiehowardart
      @Amiehowardart  5 лет назад +1

      Absolutely, they work good for pastels 😁 I think they do a fairly decent job for coloured pencils, especially on the sanded paper 😊😊

    i think for the pouder you need to do a layer on the clean paper and then cover with the pencil color

    So if the caran d'ache full blender is really just a piece of wax, does that mean we can blend with a candle too?

    Do you use solvent?

  • @askialuna7717
    @askialuna7717 4 года назад

    It looks like there is too little pigment on the paper to blend well, so it just looks a bit blended.
    At least you have some pigment left. If I use the powder blender nothing remains on the paper and everything turns into powder :-(
    quite expensive erasing method.
