if you ask me cynic is the single most important and underrated band of the last few decades for modern metal music, so much music was inspired by them.
I remember when focus dropped. It has been a huge influence in my playing style. Same with athiest and thought patterns. Chuck was taken away from us too soon, as with Roger Patterson from atheist.
Gordian Knot is an obscure piece of greatness. Seriously, there is some impressive musical skill going on there. Lots of great songs, but 'Rivers Intertwined' is a personal favorite.
Thanks again Nick! All of the three albums (Individual Thought Patterns, Focus and Elements) actually came in the same year (1993). So I guess 2011 is when the remixed version came out. I originally meant this to be a collection of progressive death metal from that era and maybe I should've suggested Pestilence as the fourth band. But as Andy LaRocque was the lead guitarist on this particular Death album and he's one of my favorite lead guitarists of all time I wanted to include something from his main band (King Diamond). And that short melodic passage (39:07) is probably my favourite part in any guitar solo ever, so that’s why I chose this one. Most people think that the previous Atheist album Unquestionable Presence is better but I've always loved Elements because it combined metal with latin rhythms and that's still quite unique I think. Something must have gone horribly wrong with the mastering of the album and it sounds like the worst example of "loudness war" even if that wasn't even a thing in 1993. But the music is so good that I learned to accept the distortion.
Really glad somebody requested this stuff! Love all 4 bands but especially Death. I think Nick would really love all of their last 4 albums. I think Elements is great too and a bit underrated compared to the first 2 albums. I also like their comeback, Jupiter. That one gets a lot of hate but I don’t really understand why. Thanks for suggesting this stuff! 🤘🤘
Thank you VERY much for your contributions Petri, you'll see how much I GUSHED about it in my (HUGE) comment(ary) - so I "apologize" in advance 🙃. Yes, I too prefer "Unquestionable Presence" (as you may read) but I came to enjoy "Elements" and that Latin quality it had, and it was much more "Fusion" than mathematical, like the 1st and definitely the 2nd album. I hope you like the "Playlist" I added. The King Diamond track was ASTOUNDING. I have only dabbled on tracks from each album, including Mercyful Fate, I don't know why, but that will be remedied in months to come (I'll reveal a Playlist for Halloween once again in October that I include tracks from both bands🎃). I've known of BOTH since they debuted, and for whatever reason I didn't get into the music, but started appreciating it more about 10 years ago. - Thanks again Petri! Also a HUGE Pestilence fan. I tend to like the 1st 3 albums the most, but their next albums and the few released in recent years still make them an excellent Death Metal band with a lot of history.
All fantastic bands, really glad to see them featured here on the channel. Death, Atheist and Cynic are absolute staples of early Progressive Death Metal. The final 4 Death albums especially are amazing and you need to hear them at some point! I’ve actually only been getting into King Diamond’s solo stuff pretty recently but I love everything I’ve heard from him so far (the first 5 albums). And of course Mercyful Fate is great too! Thanks Nick 🤘🤘
Death (in my opinion) is the best band of the genre in history. It's a pleasure that you're singing again, because you're going to notice the virtuosity, the passion and the variety of sounds they had on each album. Chuck Schuldiner was a totally unusual guitarist and songwriter and a wonderful human being. It would be great if you gave the band Kreator a listen, if you don't know them. And from Death I would recommend Flattening Of Emotion and Spirit Crusher.
Immolation is one of my favourite bands ever but would they have existed without Death? Not sure… I think objectively Death were the best in terms of innovation, influence, consistent quality, etc. and I think I like them a bit more than Immolation but I’m glad I don’t have to choose! I second the Kreator suggestion, maybe a German Thrash marathon is in order!
@Dragon Ball fans can't read "Oh and Robert Vigna never got HIV like a certain jewish guitarist from Florida."???? WTF . . . Really dude? You really went THERE? . . . wow. Apparently Dragon Ball fans expose _themselves_ easily.
Great video, thanks Nick! Two things about the Death song: 1) The song's from 1993, not 2011, and 2) The solo at 19:05 is by Andy LaRocque (of King Diamond), and Chuck takes over at 19:54 cheers!
Hey from New Mexico. Brilliant albums. The Death and Cynic are two of the greatest metal albums ever made. "Trapped in a Corner" is a highlight, impossible not to air guitar to that ridiculous solo. Andy LaRocque is an unsung guitar legend with perhaps the greatest vibrato ever. So much greatness to behold. I spent my high school years with Human, ITP, Symbolic and Focus on constant repeat.🍻
Are you kidding me! You nailed it! King Diamond,Death individual thought patterns when had Andy From king Diamond Cynic which everyone has to check out the FocusAlbum but every artist in this video is prime!
Respectful request for more Death, please! They have one of the best discographies literally EVER in my opinion, especially when they took a progressive turn around the Human album. Gene Hoglan on ITP and Symbolic did some incredible stuff on the drums, and the riffs are some of the best I've heard.
Judging for the songs each played Atheist gets a 8.5, death a 9, Cynic gets a 9 too and King Diamond gets a 10. I'll need to hear more songs from each to make further judgements.
Need to listen to Atheists "Unquestionable Presence" album. No offense to Elements (these songs are from that album) but Unquestionable Presence is the most innovative death metal album of all time as far as musicality and combining jazz with metal.
How Could I from Focus has the best outro solo ever. It matches the rhythm so well that ive held it so sacred since my childhood to the point where I refuse to learn it and remove the magic i associate with it.
Atheist called it brain metal in a super early interview. The elements album will kill almost any stereo system haha. Speakers hate where the basline sits in the mix. Great video.
Hi Nick, yes I am here, and as you know growling is not my thing. I'm with Lex on this one, but I have listened. I always will try to give tracks a chance. When my dad was alive when I was still living at home he would come into the room I was playing my records on his way to the kitchen and say. "Turn that down" I would be listening to Deep Purple or Led Zeppelin alot.....Boy did he have it easy after hearing this !!! Lol Byee Jim X
they were: 22 (masvidal), 22 (sean reinert), 23 (malone), 23 (gobel), i dont know how old Tony Teegarden was tho. pretty young they were but not 17. chuck was younger when he recorded scream bloody gore and he played everything except drums. love both death and cynic.
BTW Nicholas . . . The "mushy" sound of the Yt tracks is VERY familiar to me (because I have low band width...). What you have to remember before loading it up/setting up a track for a reaction, is having the Sound "Quality" at 480 or higher (click on the "Gear" icon under each video window and see: Quality). You'll notice the sound quality gets MUCH better right away, and in most cases the thumbnail image (cover art) will become "clearer" as well :D. - Just an FYI 🎧.
Thanks Tony. I use Spotify for the reactions that's the highest quality available on any platform. That way you guys hear it best when I convert it to a RUclips video. Thanks for the tip If I ever have to use a RUclips video.

Trapped in a Corner solo is LEGENDARY, especially first Andy LaRocque's half.
So is Veil of Maya and Focus.
19:07 best andy laroque solo of all time
He rules man.
Both Sean Malone and Sean Rienert (drums) played in Gordian Knot..all these songs are top tier!
Gordian Knot is an obscure piece of greatness. Seriously, there is some impressive musical skill going on there. Lots of great songs, but 'Rivers Intertwined' is a personal favorite.

King Diamond's guitares: Andy LaRocque, the best axeman nobody has ever heard of.
I love that guy!!
When he realizes the bass line on Death is amazing, Steve Digiorgio is one of the best bassists of metal scene, if he's not the best.
The thought patterns remaster sounds so good. The whole mix is brought up to a place that removed all the dirt from the original release.
