  • This video shows you how to identify a vine weevil problem and how to eradicate this pest in an all-natural, biological way.
    I show you where I found some larvae and how I knew I had this problem again and then I take you through the method for using the Nemasys control treatment (affiliate links below).

    I have started gathering a collection of heucheras and I noticed 2 of them were wilting. I moved them as I thought that it might have been the wind and sun as they were in a quite exposed area. A week later, still not perked up, just looking worse. So I thought, I'll trim all the dying and dead leaves. That's when I noticed, the whole plant just lifted like yours did. Roots totally munched and loooads of the horrible grubs in the compost. Gross!! There's no way I could squish them like you did, that totally freaks me out.
    I looked it up and found I could take sections of the base from them, cut any holey damaged bits off and plonk them in some fresh compost to root. So I did that the best I could, I got 3 cuttings from one and 2 from another, ditching the rest of the 2 plants as they just had so many all over / inside them.
    I then went to my go-to pest control, no idea if it has/will work but it's what I had at the time. Neem oil, mixed with castille soap and water. I did a drench on those pots and all the other heucheras as well. I think I'm definitely going to get a pack of the Nematodes as well for future.
    I'm now keeping a close eye on them, looking out for signs of random wilting and I also periodically go along and give them each a light tug to feel if they are loose in the pot.
    On a positive note - all 5 of the tiny cuttings I took are growing really nicely in their propagator tray indoors. I'll soon be able to put them in their own small pots. I never realised just how easy it is to propagate them :D

      Hi Rebecca, yes, you can definitely clean them up and replant them but I just didn't want to risk it. Those vine weevil larvae are such a nightmare and I didn't;t want to make a mistake and introduce them to my borders.
      How are yours doing?

      @@cottoverdi Oh yes I totally understand. I trimmed mine right down to tiny bits and jetted them with the hose as well before planting. I also bagged up the rest of the plants and binned. Mine are all in pots as we have very little in-ground planting areas.
      The cuttings are all doing great, still inside on my windowsill currently, soon big enough to be pricked out and put in their on small pots. They are Heuchera "Firecracker" and a Tiarella "Sugar & Spice".
      Been checking on the others and all are doing ok, no sign of weevil damage that I can tell and all firmly rooted in (I keep tugging at them every few days now as I walk by haha).
      I just bought another 2 to add to the collection as well, 'Silver Scrolls' and 'Silver Gumdrop' :D

    How did your treatment do? I’ve just found out my potted rhododendron has been attacked this this winter by the vine weevil larvae destroying the roots.

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  Год назад

      Hi Matthew, the treatment worked well for me but I'm also no longer growing any heucheras in pots because I think they are such a magnet for the vine weevil larvae. Hopefully you can save the rhododendron. Good luck.🌱

      Hi Kat, the nematodes worked on the vine weevils - I've not come across Sri Lankan weevils though. You could give it a try but there may be a specific nematode for them that you can buy online.

    Hi I have these in my pots too..I noticed you had little round balls also in your containers .I was told they are the eggs so I squish they too..but don’t know for definite …I have saucers under my pots to catch what runs out …also I go out at night with a torch to get the Beatles before they lay the eggs …they eat my hydrangeas ..I use the solution twice a year start of spring and then just going into autumn as they can hibernate over winter …fingers crossed I haven’t seen them so far this year ..

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  Год назад

      Hi Debbie, the little round balls are slow release fertiliser - I did check each one by squishing it. The fertiliser is rock hard whereas the eggs are not and will squish easily. I hope you've managed to get rid of yours.
