Chris here...I am back at Base camp in northern California near the Plumas National Forest. I collect some firewood for the wood stove/ split it up, make a quick dinner...And then tell a scary camp story about a solo backpacker who has a very frightening encounter in the Desolation wilderness of El Dorado county in the in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California.

Chris, I am an eight year combat veteran of the Royal British Marines and a twelve year wounded combat veteran of Norway’s MarineJaegerkommandoen MJK. I am 68 years old now and the past two year saw me get Covid, a right hip replacement due to arthritis brought on by having been wounded by a sniper in Kosovo/Pristina in 1992. I also have four heart stents and a broken neck from a car accident where I was t-boned by a driver who ran a red light at 70 miles an hour. I love your hikes, camping and your stories. I was raised on a farm and spent a great deal of time of course in the deep wilderness and mountain forests of Europe on military missions. Your channel brings the outdoors back to me while I am recovering. But it does make me miss being “out there”. Thanks for an excellent channel. I also don’t mind your product endorsement because I know it helps fund your endeavors. Looking forward to more camps, hikes, and stories. I have wild country stories of my own if you ver wish to hear. Thanks again.

I'm not going to go into a lot of detail here, but 7 years ago, me and my son got lost while hiking in Desolation. It was starting to get dark so I told my son that we needed to start looking for a suitable spot to bed down for the night that would keep us out of the wind. We kept hiking while we still had daylight, looking for anything that would help us out, like footprints, people off in the distance, anything at all. We hadn't seen another person all day and we were coming to realize the fact that we would be out there all night. We didn't have any cell service so we couldn't call anyone but we had plenty of water and food left so we just figured we'd build a fire and spend the night and try to find our way out the next morning.
We had been walking for at least half an hour when we stopped to look around in a 360 degree fashion to hopefully see something that would get us back on the trail towards where we had parked. At this point, we knew we were going to need to start looking for wood and a nice sized boulder to hunker down behind for the night when the loudest, most ground shaking, guttural scream either of us had ever heard(we could feel it deep down in our bones) went on for some 20+ seconds straight. The hair on the back of my neck stood up and as I'm trying to figure out both what the hell that that was and where did it come from, my son looks at me and says, "Dad, I think that that was a Bigfoot" without any trace of humor in his voice.
Long story short, it scared the hell out of both of us and I told my son that we cannot panic, we have to stay calm and as I was saying this, some 20 yards to my left, I spotted a cairn and told my son that I think that that is the trail we need. We took off running towards it and thank god, it was the trail we'd been looking for. When we made it back to the car it was pitch black, we shoved our gear in the back, and hopped in and immediately locked the doors. We nervously laughed about locking the doors as we were driving home, but I will never forget that crazy, guttural, out of this world scream.
Wow, I can't imagine how terrifying that would be to hear in person. Glad you found the trail quickly and made it out. I love the forest and hope to never, ever hear that growl/scream/howl sound! 😬

I lived alone on dead end near woods. One night I hear like a tapping at my window which is 7-8ft off ground. Checked my security cameras and nothing. No raccoons, or squirrels, or birds. Creepy
I admire that as afraid as he was, he did not try to hurt or kill it. Sad that some people don't even treat human life with that much respect.
My family has property there in Markleyville. My great aunt would tell me stories of how and why they had two gardens when she was little. One was for the family and the other was for the forest family. My great grandfather grew up there as well. The “forest family” was just an everyday thing to them. They respected each other’s privacy and sometimes every once in a while exchange gifts.

About five years ago while camped at Wrights Lake I met a BigFoot researcher who was there because of this story and others. I will admit one night I heard some creepy screams from far away. At that point I asked my dog if he would like to go inside the RV and watch a movie, he said woof!

Long ago I was backpacking in the Sierra's up around Paradise Lake and Devil's Oven past the old Peter Grubb hut near the Pacific Crest Trail. In a grassy meadow I came across a dead female deer that had been sliced in half at the belly. No blood, no rips, no guts or other damage, just a big deer, cut almost surgically in half. I turned around then and there and made for home. I had to spend another night out on the trail and was so scared I don't go backpacking alone anymore.

Wow! Paradise, Devil’s Oven, and Warren Lakes was where I did a lot of my backpacking, many times for a month at a time.

Mind my asking how old you are? I’m 72, myself. Did some snow camping at those lakes trying to catch ice out. You rarely saw another backpacker back in the day. Many good memories.

I remember seeing some clown up there on a "Tote Goat", one of those old style all terrain motor bikes. Back then no one bothered you unless you were burning the forest down.
Hey Chris this story kinda scared me brought back a memory that I had 51 years ago..but I wasn't camping ..I saw a white bigfoot I was with my dad and little brother I saw this thing come up out of the creek and into the corn field it stopped for a minute or so looked right at us and then continues to walk across the field and into the woods..I was only 13 at the time it was less than a quarter of a mile away from our house and we would hear strange noises close to the house and the dogs would bark for a good bit and then all quiet we lived around 20 miles from the closest town out in the country with some pretty big hills and hollers in Jackson county in southern Indiana.. something I will never forget..
As the sherpas say “yeti”. It is a larger Bigfoot species, typically white furred with blue or pale white skin. Usually found in mountains, they are typically more aggressive, yet there are less sighting. A similar species, yowie is native to Australia and New Zealand with red fur, and aborigines typically say they are the most aggressive Bigfoot species and love the taste of flesh. They are taller and skinnier than Sasquatch

I was camping near Hill City, South Dakota because I wanted to be near the Alpine Inn so I could order their German potato salad, (it's that good) and I was camping with my girlfriend and we were sitting next to the fire and it was near midnight. Most everyone in the camp had turned in, and a timberwolf just casually jogged through our campsite less than six feet away from me. He was easily taller than I was seated. Us two just held our breath as the wolf never stopped. Thank god. #Timberwolf 🐺🔥

Hello Chris, I'm an avid camper from Tahoe. I always carry a weapon, transponder and survival items just in case I meet BigFoot or 👽👾. Yay, a solo camper with a brain! Anyone who solo camps should have what you have. Like people in camping shops should be asking and pushing personal locator beacons if someone intends to solo camp.

I just love the outdoors scene of you prepping. Its so real life energy for this disabled from service now homebound female. (Trained by daddy from war experience how to survive (in the wild). Even though I was a girl. Air Force and homeless for decades.

Yeah, there is definetly something out there, after witnessing reports of screams and howls in forest, secluded areas in valleys and rivers. My prayers to anyone who camps alone in these places
Solo camping should be heavily discouraged, unless you're willing to carry a shotgun and/or a handgun..... So many people go missing on solo hikes never to be seen again.
As soon as you said he was solo I knew something scary was going to happen. Never camp alone!
Those Emerald pools at Wrights Lake are simply amazing to see. The big one looks shallow, but I believe it's some 14 - 15 feet deep.
A camping nightmare is when you suddenly realize you didn’t bring toilet paper! I got two shirts with squares cut out of them. Lol

Chris has dinner and a chilled beer, makes himself comfortable, ie sitting on camp chair, and with fire going on, proceeds to tell us the scariest stories possible, :) And of course we listen to him in the comforts of our home, always imagining that the bigfoot might visit us in this climate change, :)

@@basecampchris I really like your truthful stories, especially as I am camping at the moment, out in the area where myself and another camper, had an experience 2 months ago. This my 3rd trip back there since, have my dog, whom like me don't go outside the camper after 9.30 pm, except for quick WC trips, very quick. The area is beautiful and quiet, and your stories keep me on edge. This is his habitat, but he was not here prior to 4 months ago, as we have camped here for over 20 years. So I don't know where he came from, but their are incidents now, not only with me and my dog, but with other people, which is why hardly anyone comes here now. I am alone at the moment with dog, have not seen another human for a week. We are not allowed to be armed in Australia for self defense, but I do have some self defense with me.
My husband loves hiking and camping and when I watched the first vlog, I thought he and Chris would have a great time hiking the Appalachian. Thanks for sharing your adventures and stories....I loooove the stories!!

About two years ago I bought a Sven Saw and I use on all my overnight camping trips. It works really great to process fire wood and very light and compact to carry. They only negative is you need to be careful not to drop and lose the wing nut thats holds the saw together. Always carry at least one addition wing nut. Another great story and really nice Base Camp.

I remember my first backpack trip to zaleski state forest in Ohio, was the only living soul out there in November 2019, heard this huge coyote howl right before I was going to crawl in to my tent, had a nice fire going, it sounded like a huge coyote, if I didn't know better, there are no wolves In Ohio supposedly, but I'd sworn it sounded like a wolf, I loved it, remember saying out loud to myself, now this is truly life.
Anyways later that night I woke up hearing crispy crunchy sounds, sat up in my tent, something kept circling my camp, think it was that big coyote, least I think it was, but I went back to sleep lol.
I can't begin to imagine how frightened the camper was when hearing something so close to his tent. It was smart of him to leave it and go out into the granite field, putting distance between himself and the forest. Thank God he was armed....It may have saved his life. Thankfully firing shots to the side scared the creature away, without him having to actually shoot it. Had he shot it and only wounded it, his outcome may have been tragic. I don't blame him for not being able to sleep for three months following his encounter! That was a nightmare in and of itself! 😳😯😱

Desolation Wilderness is not in Alpine County. It is not just in Eldorado National Forest but is also in Eldorado County. I have lived in South Lake Tahoe as a teenager and hiked throughout that beautiful area. As an adult I have worked for years with a Girl Scout camp sending backpackers through the wilderness there. Just thought you needed clarification on what you said.

Love the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains. I lived in Mammoth for many years back in the day(80's). I camped every year(summer).with my family growing up at Virginia Lakes,and near Bodie as well. Miss those times..
Recently moved out of CA and Bishop is one of the places I miss the most. Lake Sabrina, North Lake, Owens river, etc

True event that would leave most shook,needless to say I know there are more things out in the woods than deers bears and chipmunks! 😆 Northern parts of Ontario Canada are incredibly dense and wild And I no longer need to imagine what's out there I've already seen it.

I go on yearly solo trips to Desolation Wilderness. Two summers ago I parked at Wrights Lake Campground and was planning on hiking to Twin Lakes to stay for s few days. It is very steep (especially with a 40lb pack) and took few hours to get to those rock cairns you were mentioning. Once you get to that part you’re pretty close to Twin Lakes. Nothing creepy happened to me, but I’m glad it was some unknown creature instead of some crazy person. For some reason I’m more scared of people stories rather than unknown/supernatural stuff.
I highly recommend the Wrights Lake to Twin Lake hike. Beautiful place! Can’t wait to go back this summer!

Good story Chris I really enjoyed it. Having the 44 Magnum with you in that kind of country when you're alone is a good idea. I've often carried both bear spray and a 44 into the wild. I'd rather spray them than shoot (I love bears) but a powerful sidearm is a great tool to have.

Thanks Chris! Great video and story. Desolation Wilderness is an amazing area. The only weird encounter I’ve had in Desolation are coyotes that sound like children crying. At least I like to think they were just coyotes

My only unfrotunate Desolation Wilderness experience involved some particularly hungry mosquitos. You could see the outline of, and connect the dots to create, a perfect replica of my eyeglasses. Gorgeous place, one of my favs.
Well that's really weird we have coyotes around here and they go crazy when the sirens go off around here every now and then but I have never ever heard them sounding like children crying

Desolation is my second favorite place to backpack outside of Yosemite National Park. All though I myself have not had any crazy experiences in either location, it reminds me to keep my head on a swivel! Great videos per your usual.

You camp in beautiful spots. The terrain is out there in the wilds. Your food is great. I also live in the wilds of Alaska since 1967. I've had an encounter myself. I love it here but theres always Big Game lurking wherever it be bears. moose or other big Bigfoot. Love watching your videos. going to try the campfire Potato soup. Sounds good. I camped and hunted with my husband. He passed away in 2019.

Uh, yeah, that would scare the pee out of me too. I have heard all sorts of things and have seen all sorts of things in the woods, but nothing like that. I don't know if I could ever go back in the woods after an encounter like that, just terrifying. Your base camp looks awesome, I really need to go to the dollar store and get some of my equipment there. I paid almost four dollars for that sweeper and pan combo. Keep'em coming, next time, let us know if we are going to need the popcorn! Still gives me the shivers, man! Cheers, lol, thanks for the scare.

Many Bigfoot encounters include rock throwing and tree knocking and the scream is the cherry on top . A trail camera would be a great idea to put in that area.

Very nice Shaker!!! Always cool to see hikers crossing over The Connecticut River on that bridge. I probaly been over it hundreds of times in a vehicle and under it in a boat many times as well.
And i love the plank walkway thru your woods in backyard.

It took months for me also to accept what I saw. I almost peed my pants so don't feel bad. I started shaking and sobbing. I questioned my sanity.its rough but call the bfro if you're not getting over it.another good one Chris. I would love to camp out if I had a cot pretty high up. I'm 69 and love to watch a fire. My dad mom and 5 of us kids fished and camped.it was so much fun

I'm a 1 shot warning type of guy. If something is going to come back after a .44 magnum is shot at it, then it needs a few rounds to the chest.
My company is always stressing safety at work. You might consider wearing safety glasses when chopping your firewood. Cheap, clear, safety glasses at the dollar store.
And a helmet when u sleep too.. I get it shit can happen. But I guess in all the years I've split wood I've never been hit near the eyes 👀 ..

hi chris, i'm really not trying to sound like a "know it all" but when using a saw try to use the whole blade rather than just 2 or 3 inches of the center, you will get way better longevity from this blade, plus less strokes = easier on your arm...what do you think, am i full of bologna. when i was a young boy, an old timer caught me short stroking my saw, and schooled me on the spot about using the entire length of the blade.....just a hint! let me know what you think.
