  • In 1911, Italy tried to expand its colonial empire by seizing the last Ottoman possessions in Africa.

    Notes:
    While Egypt, Cyprus, and Crete were in theory/legally Ottoman possessions, in reality they were not controlled by them. Egypt and Cyprus were British controlled while Crete was an independent republic at the time in defiance of the Ottomans.
    The border between Senussi and Ottoman control is very fluid and complicated, so I went with the approximately accepted administrative borders.

      Thats exactly the reason. As I've commented elsewhere, the Italians werent even fighting the Ottoman army for the most part. Most of the forces in Libya were local tribesmen hastily recruited by the Ottomans. The Italians purposefully landed in disconnected parts of the empire since Italian naval advantage meant that the Ottomans couldnt reinforce it with their army, which wouldve definitely caused a lot of headaches.

Meanwhile your so-called navy consists of old-tech rusty ships which actually doesnt exist. Meanwhile Albanians start a rebellion. At a point you stabilize the situation and hold Italians on coast line with local militias and the help of handfull officers. Then what comes next ? Balkan league declares war upon you :)
    Keep in mind, those were the times when the empire was crumbling. Ottomans had almost no control at their outer provinces and the empire was in a badly financial crysis.

  • @gb4206
    @gb4206 2 месяца назад +29

    The problem for the Ottomans was that they could not send their army to Libya go fight the Italians. Egypt, while de jure an Ottoman vassal, was de facto under British control. The British wouldn't let the armies pass through.
    What the Italians fought were basically bedouins and local tribesmen whom a handful young Turkish officers hastily trained. And despite having the technological and numerical advantage, the Italians found themselves effectively besieged on the coastal cities throughout the war, never being able to seriously push into the inner lands (which by the way was not empty, contrary to what many claim. Various cities existed inlands.)
    Not only that, but financially this war was a disaster for the Italians. The costs exceeded any profit they might've envisioned and it meant this whole escapade was nothing more than an attempt at gaining prestige, which does not seem to have worked.
    All in all, it seems like the Ottomans werent the only sick ones in Europe.

Also because Italy is one of the very few non-muslim nations that it's actually directly mentioned in the Quran... no surprise then, in turn, not a lot of Italians like Islam...

      this was a huge italian victory, there weren't cities inland, over 80% of libya's population was under Italian control.
      the italians were capable of pushing into the deserts but had no reason to since they had basically already won the war from the beginning. as soon as Italy landed troops the war was already lost for the turks, with the italian navy being stronger, there was no way for the ottomans to take libya back, and even if the turks had egypt they would have still lost, the Italian army was slightly smaller but it had better equipment and was more organized, the Italians had a lot more morale than the unstable ottoman empire.
      and besides, even IF the ottomans were able to slow down Italian advances by sending in the army(considering the state of the turkish army at the time, this is a big "IF"), they would have still lost because Italy's balkan allies would have attacked earlier.

    After Italians landed in ports they couldn't move into rest of the cities and instead opted to occupy Rhodos, Ottoman Navy didn't fight the Italians and Istanbul suffered from famine as naval trade got blocked.
    And then the Balkan Wars happened and literally ripped Ottoman State's economic heartland apart.
