Not even from the US but it's extremely ironic that the ONLY people that could afford the 4 year long cruise would be the least affected by the new government, or by any government tbh
This was exactly my thought. Those people could like, buy a house in a small town and not connect to the internet for 4 years, hire a maid and eat a lot of takeout and a gym membership, and would then be able to sell the house at the end of 4 years and probably be better off.
It's kinda ridiculous anyway bc the rich ppl who CAN afford a 4 year cruise won't really be affected by anything that happens in the next 4 years anyways. They may even be the few who will benefit. Its more of a marketing gimmick to get their name out there in my opinion
Hey, not sure if you'd be interested, but in February MagicCon is being held in Chicago. I don't know if you're at all interested in Magic: The Gathering, but it will coincide with the release of Aetherdrift, which is their racing themed set of cards, and I know you like a very specific racing sport, but as a 27 year old boomer, all vehicles are the same to me, so I figured you might find it cool.
@@TheRaquelephantyeah this bot is on so many videos saying the same thing… i think i saw it on Penguinz0’s channel (which is kind of a strange crossover imo)
I echo those women's advice about traveling alone as a young woman. I studied abroad in college and loved it so much I applied for fellowships post-grad and was able to get into one teaching english abroad. I had friends who thought about studying abroad but didn't want to leave their college bfs. Most of those relationships didn't make it to graduation. For the one relationship that did (they're married today), my friend with hindsight realized that their relationship was strong enough to have made it through a semester abroad and she still regrets not going. If fear of being alone or losing a relationship is what's holding you back - do it afraid! As women it does take planning to travel/move abroad alone but I grew so much, learned so much about myself and the world, and I met so many wonderful people - some I'm still friends with. I'm pushing 40 now and can attest that if you have the travel bug it will take a break but never really leave. :-) My back can't take cheap hostel beds or long hikes the way it used to; I'm so glad I did it when I could.
Yup. My husband and I met first semester of college and after we graduated I moved to SC (from TX) for a year and a half and now we’re married. Distance won’t break a strong relationship
my mom, whom always had a travel bug, went to study abroad in Canada in 1990, met my dad and settled here. after many years of soul searching, depression and a messy divorce, she finally got back on her feet and dusted off the idea of doing a world tour. she backbacks around the world for at least half of the year, and she turned 52 this year. she did one of Peru’s most difficult hikes (20km under the rain) with my sister this summer. don’t let your age stop you! you are stronger than you think you are!!
my husband and I did back to back virgin voyages cruises for our honeymoon. The first leg was tons of fun, but by the second while I wasn't sick of my husband. I was pretty sick of literally everyone else. So very valid takes all around.
Gosh, I would hate to be cooped up with the same people for so long, always talking to people and doing things. Swell mentioned in the beginning of the video that it’s a bit overstimulating, and that sounds exhausting. Traveling is not for the faint of heart I suppose lol
Yes! That's what I think. That's one reason the Virgin 1 year unlimited cruise membership would be great - hop on, hop off - No chance to get too sick of anyone (other than your partner 🤣)
The privacy thing is so real. I only have experience with spending two weeks on a very small boat with up to 5 other people. I have done this twice. The first time I did this I shared a cabin (which is just a double bed and very small closet) with someone else and eventually I just started taking longer bathroom breaks when in port just to have a moment of quiet. This year I had a cabin to myself and it made a huge difference to be able to be alone even just at night
I've been happily married just shy of twenty years. I think much of that is because we have our own bedrooms and I have my very own bathroom. Personal space is a beautiful thing.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder, if you're always together all the time you can find it hard to appreciate each other. Just like those born into wealth often don't know how different their lives are.
Life doesn't stop at 35 for the record...I've now been more places ever than before afterwards cause I had the money to do so. I took myself to Japan this year, and I'm going again next year. I'm also going to south korea at the same time. I'm 39,, I plan on traveling until I physically can't anymore or run out of money to do so.
gentle reminder for everyone that people don't need to live with someone else in order to be married to them lol And also, you can always find someone who likes quiet the same way you do. Or you can live with people that work at sea, or they travel for work. The world is varied and relationships that work can be very diverse!
Thank you, to be honest I never considered this. I've always struggled with the idea of living with someone else, sharing a bed every night and not having my own completely private space. I love living alone and I don't think I could ever in a million years give that up lol... Idk if I'll ever meet someone like that or even want to get married, but at least now I have this to consider too, if that makes sense
@@leafisactuallyaplantyk I'm a big proponent of separate bedrooms, if you are able. There are so many reasons to do it that have nothing to do with being estranged.
@@leafisactuallyaplantyk honestly married couples who dont slept together every night and have separate bedroom is a p normal thing to want n is possible. its not like u cant Ever sleep in the same bed but its b/w u and ur future s/o.
@@leafisactuallyaplantyk trust me you will. There's a big wave of people now who are open to the idea. Diversify your circle and the types of people you speak to. In my own friendship circle I'd say it's a fairly even split probably leaning towards leaving separately, even when living together there's a strong preference for separate personal spaces, specifically bedrooms. I'm 25 and my friends are 25 - 65 from all walks of life. I think it's all about what works for you both and the dynamic of your relationship and most importantly what you're like in relationship. Some people need a little more space alone to regulate and be able to be their best versions and show up for the people they love and that's ok. If that's what it takes to have thriving relationships so be it! Fuck what people say. You can't compromise the health of yourself and relationship just to appear normal. How does normal benefit you when it's dysfunctional? It doesn't. I hope you find an understanding partner. You deserve to be considered wholly ❤
That is important to remind people of, but it's also important to make the distinction that you don't have to live together _if you're married._ But, if you plan on moving in together in the future, do it _before_ you're married. That's a massive stereotype for a reason; people only moving in after they get married and realizing they don't like sharing a space, or don't even like each other as much as they thought they did. And, in situations like that, you don't want to be stuck paying for two people on a year-long lease and then have to pay another instance of rent for whoever wants to move out.
I got norovirus from a friend when they came back from a cruise. That was reason enough for me to not ever go on a cruise once I found out how common it is when you're packed like sardines.
Yeah I was taken on a cruise when I was 12 and the 2 people I went with got norovirus (miraculously it skipped me) and with that experience and since covid my motto is ‘you couldn’t pay me to get on a cruise ship’. Like literally, I’m pretty sure I would turn down a life changing amount of money to be able to stay off cruise ships for the rest of my life. Blows my mind that people pay money to get on those sardine cans.
@@peacechickification Same. I've never been on one, had the opportunity but turned it down. Have another opportunity next year, will be turning that down as well. I hate boats and large bodies of water, and the illnesses spreading through them is even worse. You'd have to drag me kicking and screaming in order to get me on a cruise
I can't second your statement about just going out and traveling solo enough! My first time traveling internationally was a 9 day solo trip to Spain and it was wonderful. Growing up the message instilled in me (mainly by my dad) was "work hard now, enjoy it later." Well, then he died at 62 and while my mom has done some traveling since then she has mobility limitations. Things like going in the towers at La Sagrada Familia or visiting the Parthenon in Athens are adventures that need a degree of mobility that isn't guaranteed when I'm older, so I'm glad I did them now,
As someone who lives in a port-side town that gets at least a couple of cruise ships visiting each day I have noticed that most people in port-side towns don't really like cruise tourists. They spend less money than regular tourists and move in big unorganized groups that gets in the way all the time. The only cruise I myself have been on was a scientific one where we were working for 11 hours per day, and would not want to stay on any other kind for a prolonged time, even if I had the money for it.
as someone who gets seasick from looking at a boat and did not know this until i cruised, DO NOT spend your money on thesr long haul cruises without knowing if you can handle it, please ❤
As someone who gets motion sick super easily, I've had multiple people tell me "Oh, you would be fine on a cruise. The ship is so big, you can hardly feel it move!" No, thank you. I'm not chancing it! Being stuck on a moving vessel is my worst nightmare.
@@sweetness371literally! car, bus, whatever. i’ve never flown and am terrified to. ultimate vessel you cannot get off. at least they can land a helicopter on the boat to remove you.
I'm not a married old lady, but their comments resonate. I'm a married old(er) man and the wisdom I want to share is that you should seize opportunities to travel whenever they come, to the extent you can. I'm sitting here in middle age, not having traveled as much as I expected or hoped for.
I enjoy cruises. My wife and I do 1-2 a year on Norwegian and it's a great time but we both agree doing anything more than 7 days sucks. We just abuse our status to get a discount on the spa as we found it's the best way to avoid people
I second trying out a week long cruise to see if you even like it. There are 2-3 day cruises but imo they are too short to get a feel of the cruise life. My wife and I went on a 7 day Carnival cruise up and down the Mexican west coast and while we enjoyed it our favorite parts by far were the days in a port city where we can go explore for a limited time. That cruise taught us that we would much rather spend an entire week at a single city to explore and enjoy it instead of spending a week on a cruise ship visiting multiple cities for a max 8 hours at each place.
I always appreciate you being a fellow person who just chooses not to drink. It's nice to know I'm not the only one, and your reviews of experiences are more relevant to me because you're sober just as I would be :)
As a non-cruise-ship-passenger who hiked Alaska a few years back the cruises passengers come through like herds of elephants, making everything crowded and causing long lines everywhere. Also, the ships up there often have a 'two drink tickets a day' thing, but they are only good on the boat. So, before excursions to 'get their money's worth' a lot of the passengers would have their two daily drinks before coming ashore. There are least, I can't imagine being part of the buzzed crowds. There was no way most of them were able to do much at shore, even in terms of just eating at the good local restaurants.
as an alaskan, so much of our income comes from tourism but also its obnoxious when its the season - tourists are usually super nice or super aggressive, no in between. luckily where i live we dont get sea-cruises but we still get a lot of tourists
@@graypaw123 Yeah, I dealt with aggressive tourists and even got pushed twice. It was a shock to come out of hiking for days to some guy pushing me out of line for a bus so his wife could have first pick of seats.
I’ve been on 2 cruises with my parents. We’ve shared cabins each time. A fight has broke out each time. I love my parents, but personal space was desperately needed.
To me saying you're well travelled and from doing a cruise is like visiting Disneylands in the US and saying you've travelled American. I cant knock it if its somthing you enjoy, but its entirely different from actually trying to get to know a country. Hostels, even outside Europe these days can be incredibly cushy for very little money and trains are a great way to meet fellow backpackers aswell as zone out or get work done. Solo travelling is never going to be assesible or right for everyone but i think its a great experience where you can learn more about yourself and grow versus a guided tour where you are carted around.
On cruises you can explore without going the guided tours, and it's much cheaper to do so. On travel in general, I think it's hard to move beyond tourism into genuine "travel". Even in your example, you mention getting to know fellow tourists, not locals, which I think is honestly how it goes about 99% of the time. I take lots of train journeys abroad, because I love it. But I barely exchange 2 words with anyone from the country I'm visiting, other than service staff. For that reason, I see myself as a tourist, not a traveller. And not so different from the cruise passengers on their day trips.
Even if the hotels abroad are cheap, cruises are still a cheaper option for a lot of people, especially if you live on the coast. Just a flight to Europe and back can cost upwards of $1000. Meanwhile, I can do a 7 day cruise for about $800 total, food included, and no airfare necessary because I live near a port. For me, economically, it's the only way I can afford to travel outside of the States.
Regarding the potential for future long term relationships: I once saw a clip from an interview where Carol Burnette said she would be willing to consider marriage again, only under the condition that they lived next door to each other. 🤣 solid points were made...
I've been lucky to have been on a cruise twice. That being said, I'd rather actually travel at my own pace than risk the chance of people messing up my venture by being late or not listening to the person leading us.
I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM! Everyone on the cruise wanted to talk to me and all I wanted was to shut off and be alone. Needless to say, I haven't cruised since but instead do solo trips to one location that has a lot of attractions nearby (Universal, Miami, Chicago, DC)
I'm a night owl for these kinds of reasons. Even when you're in a highly populated place, eventually the majority of people go to bed. Granted, if you want like.. food or drinks, that then depends on what is open, but if you just want quiet, then I recommend being awake at 4am and ruining your ability to have a normal sleep schedule.
the cheapest way to get from helsinki to stockholm or tallinn is a cruise and I've done a lot of those and they're literally just full of drunk middle aged and older people and everyone has a bad time. I just went on the ships to get to concerts and shit lmao
I am so surprised about everything here because in my Circle Cruises are a non-negotiable NO GO due to the Environmental impact they have 😮 i wasnt aware so many young people still do them
same lol. I'm not American but where I'm from no one who isn't a conservative over 60 would even think of going on a cruise. Not even just for environmental reasons, also bc it's a cringe way to travel, you don't really experience the places you're visiting and the locals hate your guts!
6:00 I am a travel agent and there is a clique of people in their 60s-70s who seem to be competing with each other to see who can go to the best destination. They aren't going on these trips because they like traveling, they're doing it to gain points on their friends. I'm happy to profit though
I’ve only ever done 1 cruise and while I enjoyed it a lot it definitely felt like being herded from place to place. I also went to university in a port city and the number of tourists clogging up the place when ships were in was ridiculous. The thing that annoyed me most was that the pickup point for the port bus was on my route home. Did any of the tourists notice that they were blocking the footpath for everyone else? Nope! 🤦♀️
When i think of cruises i always think of Labadee Haiti, leased to Royal Caribbean Cruises by *Baby Doc*. For however much you spend on a cruise, you can experience a serene, double fenced area of Haiti with a private security force, where the only citizens you’ll engage with will be serving you, or selling you something through a controlled system…locals cannot enter. Despite the continued civil unrest and turmoil the Haitian population are experiencing, you can ignore it all head over to beautiful Caribbean seas for a spot of waterskiing. So no… going on a cruise is definitely not experiencing the culture or the country. its a sanitised, environmentally damaging version of travel 🙂 I guess i have stronger feelings than i thought when i started writing this LOL. Don’t go on cruises.
9:00 you just have to find someone that also needs Their Time and Their Space!! My husband & I work really well together because both of us need to be Alone sometimes.
Ferries and boats are enough for me at this point in my life. I hate the idea of a cruise with a passion. But what I do love is the train and would totally pay good money to do one of those few day ones.
I'm highly critical of cruises anyways so these luckily never catch me, but I can't imagine being so out of touch that I'd fall for a four years long cruise to avoid the presidency
Imo simply spending some time in a place doesn’t mean you’ve really *been* there, like the influencer spending 10 minutes in a place to say she’s travelled there by that logic i’ve been to qatar and singapore and serbia because i spent a few hours in their airports during layovers to where i was actually travelling Cruises i feel like it depends on how long the ship is in port for, but i do feel it’s more visiting a place than travelling to it if that makes sense
I was on a 3 day virgin voyage, there were 4 of us in a room, two on a queen and 2 on a couch bed which was crazy in itselfs. Then the bathroom had a clear window in it which was locked on top of the bed and opposite to the couch bed and the mini living room. We assumed it was a window which could turn froasted but we could never figure it out. The window was perfectly placed so you could see the top half of a person, love my friends but not enough for them to see that. Cruises are really not my thing
A cruise voyage always sounded like like an interesting trip I may enjoy but at the same time I'd hate to be around soooo many people. I was thinking of taking a paddleboard cruise up the Mississippi River south to the north.
Having worked in the cruise industry and just talking with management people and officers in the crew mess, I cannot fathom trusting a cruise line for a 4-year trip without them having a history of either doing it before or having done at least 2-year trips before. I gotta know they know how all of it works, because it can get complicated as hell even when you just run the same route on the normal trips
The wealthy imbue travel with heaps of symbolic meaning mostly as a way to devalue the life experiences of less rich people. Due to my own chronic illness & needs of my family, I’ve gone from traveling heavily to rarely leaving the region. I enjoy travel very much & it can certainly open one’s eyes, but most people I know only stuff their faves, get drunk & enjoy recreation opportunities that are so disconnected from local life that they learn nothing. It’s mostly an excuse to over consume & way to hide that travel is a huge environmental problem. before the pampered & spoiled ask me to buy metal straws, I’d like to see shaming of people who fly more than 4 times a year. Let’s stop pretending anyone learns anything on a cruise.
About the Ville Vie cruise, they're not just doing a four year cruise... they're selling rooms to people for 200k or more, depending on what type of room you get, to go on a "never ending cruise." They guarantee it will be at least 15 years of constantly traveling around the world. The rooms look even smaller than what you have and the bathrooms look really small. Some of the rooms have no windows, while others only have a port window! It's also an older ship so it's missing a lot of modern things that are on most ships you would go on nowadays! Significantly crazier than the 9 month cruise, which I honestly never understood why people went crazy for that considering world cruises have existed since the 1800's, but I guess it's the first one to have content creators on it.
I've seen people fly abroad in the morning then fly home in the evening so they can say they've been to that country. Seems like a waste of money/carbon emissions.
I loved traveling to, and being at, Disney World... the first few times. After seeing everything and riding the rides that I know I enjoy, it became pretty repetitive. I can only imagine that it would be the same for me for everything, including cruises. I've never been on a cruise. I imagine I would really enjoy going on a cruise... the first few times. After that? It would become too repetitive for me, and the thought that I spent $100,000+ for what ends up being a few cruises, would be depressing.
I've been all over the bahamas visiting family and friends and traveled to eastern europe and asia. I've been on exactly one cruise that I will probably never do again. I felt trapped and it IS SO very overstimulating for an introvert to be literally surrounded by people for days. If it wasn't for a family wedding, I'd never have gone. The Bahamas is much more fun outside of the Resort/Tourist experience.
Not to be like rahhh late stage capitalism but I think the concept of selling whole personalities and lifestyles as a product with a (steep) price tag is a very grim sign of the times. Also four years on a boat where people don't even act like norovirus is a thing let alone covid is almost equally as daunting as staying in america 🥴
just wanted to chip in as a married woman, my husband and i are perfectly fine with each other taking solo trips! we don't have kids tho, so it's a lot more flexible, but if you wanna continue travelling solo after marriage, it's possible! just make sure to have a good talk with your partner about it :) We travel a lot together and enjoy it but running off by myself is something that i enjoy as well
I can't decide if this video is my sign to book the (short) solo cruise I've been eyeing or if I should let the mentions of norovirus in the comments talk me out of it, lmao
Purely anecdotal, but I’ve been on about a dozen cruises in my life, all at different times of year, and have never gotten sick after one. I did, however, catch a cold from someone at Costco the day before Thanksgiving so… again, purely anecdotal 🤷🏼♀️
I would love to take more cruises…. I feel complete and utter peace and happiness on the water. But my doggos are my life… and I can’t imagine rehoming them!
A friendof mine travels z lot, she loves to backpackcand meet people. She managed to do half her education in other european countries, mostly living in colocations and woofing. She also checked a lot of countries inpassing. She says that she doesn't considers she's lived in a country if it's for less than a month; like, yeah, technically she spends 3 hours in portugal, she'sbeen there, but that's as a tourist, not as someone who wants to enjoy Portugal
7:30 As someone who went solo travelling twice - I have zero regrets. Can't do it at the moment, and don't know if I'll ever do it again, but I'm glad I did it. It was money well spent.
My sis took me on a virgin cruise in Sep. If trains can have a quiet car cruise ships could definitely have a quiet sanctuary aboard. Shout out big sis we both watch your channel!
Very well said. A cruise is an experience in of itself and while it can be an easier route to see some faraway places, a day in port really can't compare to spending a week in town with the locals. Doing all your own traveling and planning is infinitely more work than going on a cruise, but your money will go soooo much farther. $100K can get you a year of seeing and doing practically anything without the cruise line's restrictions on where you go, what you eat, etc. Cruises are best for the novelty and ease with only some of the traveling aspect, in my opinion.
As someone who goes on a cruise once a year please don't wait until the last say to pay off your ship balance unless you want to wait 4+ hours waiting lol
I'm going to preface that I've only been on one cruise. But I hated it. It felt like I was living in a wall with frequent earthquakes. The *only* good thing for me was the amount of alone time I got with my husband. When lock down happened a few years later, I got so spoiled having him just constantly around that I'm still a little bitter when he goes to work (he's a therapist and helps a lot of people , so I can't be *too* bitter). I think I was one of like.... Ten whole people who actually had a pretty okay time during lockdown, and a huge part of that was getting to spend so much time with my husband who, up to that point, regularly worked like 60hr weeks between jobs, graduate school, and necessary internships.
as someone whose first cruise was an 11-day thing from Singapore to Shanghai in the middle of march on what was already considered a smaller ship by 2011 standards, i think i'm lucky to have enjoyed it, cos we went through a Lot. The south china sea is pretty rough in march and then we also had That Thing that happened halfway through and occupied all the TV screens for the rest of the trip
that's also not mentioning the extra 3 days we spent in Shanghai, which was both good and bad for many reasons, but that's got nothing to do with the cruise trip and is more like "we were trying to holiday in China for cheap without much available information and defaulted to some of our Asian Package Tour instincts"
I'm doing a week on NCL with my in-laws soon. I'm sharing a cabin with my MIL and FIL, and my husband isn't even going (long story, but he's fine with it, I just have to plan a family cruise for us now). We'll see how that goes!!
I don't believe in a distinction between tourist and traveller. I say that as someone who prefers slow travel, who spent my 20's in hostels and usually take public transport. Travel is a luxury, even if you are doing it on a shoe-string. Usually those most insistent on being called a traveller are trustafarians sneering at people who worked hard to afford to stay at a nice resort. Your family made it's money from the Coolie system Tristan, teaching English as a foreign language in Myanmar for three months isn't going to cleanse that ancestral sin. Anyway, travel how you like, spend your money how you like. Figure out what sparks joy for you and do it.
Would you ever go full Eva zu Beck and just travel the world in your Land Rover (with your dog)? I'm fascinated by things like that but could never do it. I could never travel for escapism because I'd want to escape from the travel or rather all the things that go with it.
Oh. Yeah. I'd definitely just go by myself and not bother going along with other people if a long-term cruise is ever a consideration. I've had to find out the hard way that basically... I can't stand people. Or rather, I can't stand needing to consider other people because I physically am not able to tolerate the finicky whims of other people. Either they need to abide by my physical schedule and be extremely tolerant, or they can buzz off I can't have people trying to dictate when or how I eat meals, whether or not we sit and rest a bit before getting up after finishing a meal, or when our restroom breaks are. Physically cannot tolerate these things, 'cuz I'm going to end up feeling super unwell if the timing is terribly off and I end up getting a migraine and make everyone else just as miserable as I am feeling. And this is also why I generally hate going on trips because all of these scheduling things with checkouts and the like. I need at least a day in between to settle down and rest =-=;; I'm a bit too old now to be rushing around everywhere and enjoying the experience. Personally, I'd rather like just holing up in a cavern somewhere and not be bothered ;w;
My husband and I keep going on dog friendly road trips because I miss my dog haha and he's only had to do boarding once every couple of years for events we are absolutely not driving to. We will hopefully do an international trip or cruise in the next couple years, though.
Im glad im british in due to recent world politics, plus I can drive 20 mins in any direction and be in a field with peace and quiet. I wouldn't say it's a luxury unless you're a Londoner. I am in a five yesr relationship, and over a month in a rental, we are loving it, but we have a large enough place that we are nolonger bumped up tovether. We had been both at uni and in shared rooms for three years . We didn't have too many issues, as we're both autistic and can space out and not notice each other for hours on end. We would probably be fine on a cruise, but I can totally understand that people who can't handle another person being around for so long, especially with the addition of sea sickness in bad weather.
I'm Aussie & me and my sister went on virgin voyager in dec 2023/jan 2024 around parts of Australia & NZ for 14 days. We booked it 9 days before because we wanted a little holiday around Christmas time & my sisters credit card company gave us a little discount & the site had a little discount bc was 9 days before and when we got on there wasn't too many people probably maybe half full. Was pretty good probably bc wasn't filled up but then few months later virgin announced they weren't doing Australia/NZ again. It wasn't fully promoted the best but also it was expensive so I get why. I'm just glad we got a discount bc we would not have done virgin otherwise. I'm happy we got to do it especially now that Australia isn't getting virgin voyager again
I'm AFAB (nonbinary) and 26 rn and honestly ? Because of your channel I started traveling alone! I've been to Japan and Vegas multiple times and various other places it's so much fun! Now I make it a point to travel out of state 3-4 times a year and atleast 1-2 random local events a month. I'm also nosey and love reviewing/ talking about things but, idk how to edit videos or where to get video editing software that isn't a virus. 😅
Right... tourism is my thing, it's my job and it's something I really love (I work in different destinations year round so exploring is sorta an added bonus) but I do not understand these long travel options😅 as you said they get sick of each other eventually and it's been proven by research that at the moment short stays are way more viable anyway😂 Also, we joke all the time when the booking notes say honeymoon we will be witness to their trial on how strong their actual relationship is LOL
As someone who also values their solitude, cruise cabins are in fact not great when you have to share them. Not being able to get alone time anywhere on the ship unless it was like 1 AM and I was wandering the deck in the dark sucked.
I was on vacation with my bestie for 7 days straight, on land, in a big room, no boat. We fought so hard we had a 2 week no talk period after we got back...
i’m sorry if i hurt anyone’s feelings but cruises are the most superficial and damaging form of travel. when i say damaging i mean environmentally of course and to the local economy and social fabric of the touristic ports. they should cease to exist
Hopescope did a couple videos where she took “Pinterest vacations” and went to places where people have taken amazing pictures and seeing what it’s actually like. It’s pretty wild and actually a really cool couple of videos
I have zero interest in actually going on a cruise, but I do watch Mighty Ships on Smithsonian, and I really appreciate the nonsense that cruise ships go through trying to cart people around. I just couldn't put up with being on the boat for so long, even if it's a very nice boat with plenty to do.
I do want to go on cruises, but I also have five cats, so I would only do extended voyages(like a month or two) if I could also afford to have them boarded at the local pet boarding facility.
I got to go on a cruise with my family when I was a kid. It was disney cruise and was lots of fun, but I could never do it again. I studied abroad for a semester and stayed in five different countries over that time. I was with my class for major travel, but when we were settled we were free to explore the cities we were staying in. It was amazing. I much rather have the chance to go back to those places with my partner. To be able to show him all the art and museums, the architecture! That's my dream vacation. Though I'd want to do each country as its own vacation, so top five dream vacations 😂
I can't imagine a long long cruise. I liked the idea of sailing out of my city and coming back in a week and I don't have to fly. It's an easy vacation to somewhere with nice clear waters. My kiddo spends everyday at the pool and goes to the buffet by themselves for lunch. We can drop them off at the kid's club for a few hours if we want to be alone in the evening. We try to take it easy and not really do any excursions. We will go to the beach and surrounding areas. Retiring on a cruise is not recommended by the cruise lines. Maybe one day someone will make a line that will have caretakers and accommodating medical facilities. Of course that shit would be ungodly expensive.
Months long cruises sound miserable to me. I went on a 7 day cruise with my mom and sister recently. My sister and I are like twins, we are so similar and there was still a certain time of day where I hit a wall and she became public enemy number one
Any traveling (especially to overseas) is so expensive, especially on one income. If I don't want to go by myself, then I have to save for ages and it takes the fun out!
Not even from the US but it's extremely ironic that the ONLY people that could afford the 4 year long cruise would be the least affected by the new government, or by any government tbh
Yesss it has blue check liberal all over it
This was exactly my thought. Those people could like, buy a house in a small town and not connect to the internet for 4 years, hire a maid and eat a lot of takeout and a gym membership, and would then be able to sell the house at the end of 4 years and probably be better off.
Eventually we'll all realize that they legitimately only consider financially well-off people as real people.
Exactly
If you have the privilege to check out it is your responsibility to do the exact opposite
Ngl the 4 year time skip is tempting. Thank god I'm poor and afraid of the ocean so I am immune to the clever marketing
It's kinda ridiculous anyway bc the rich ppl who CAN afford a 4 year cruise won't really be affected by anything that happens in the next 4 years anyways. They may even be the few who will benefit. Its more of a marketing gimmick to get their name out there in my opinion

Amanda has stolen content from me without my permission for money and views and never has given me any credit
Just seeing the open sea behind her opens a bottomless fear in my soul. I could never do it.
@DJKuroh yeah, i don't know about you, but this was a video i listened to instead of watching
As someone who gets motion sick super easily, I've had multiple people tell me "Oh, you would be fine on a cruise. The ship is so big, you can hardly feel it move!" No, thank you. I'm not chancing it! Being stuck on a moving vessel is my worst nightmare.

There was no way most of them were able to do much at shore, even in terms of just eating at the good local restaurants.
as an alaskan, so much of our income comes from tourism but also its obnoxious when its the season - tourists are usually super nice or super aggressive, no in between. luckily where i live we dont get sea-cruises but we still get a lot of tourists
i went to seward for a weekend and the amount of huge packs of tourists that would just block the roads and be rude to locals was insanely frustrating
Since the pandemic, and what happened on cruise ships during lockdown, I will not ever go on a cruise.
I would turn down a million dollars if I had to get on a cruise ship to claim it
13:33 I feel like that cost for WiFi is totally insane, I would rather just bring my own starlink at that point if I did cruises a lot
🤣 solid points were made...
solo traveling is such a lovely and enriching experience!
I hope you can take an actual quiet break soon, rest is important
I've been lucky to have been on a cruise twice. That being said, I'd rather actually travel at my own pace than risk the chance of people messing up my venture by being late or not listening to the person leading us.
I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM! Everyone on the cruise wanted to talk to me and all I wanted was to shut off and be alone. Needless to say, I haven't cruised since but instead do solo trips to one location that has a lot of attractions nearby (Universal, Miami, Chicago, DC)
Solo travel is the absolute best!
@ exatcly!
So no… going on a cruise is definitely not experiencing the culture or the country. its a sanitised, environmentally damaging version of travel 🙂
I guess i have stronger feelings than i thought when i started writing this LOL.
Don’t go on cruises.
9:00 you just have to find someone that also needs Their Time and Their Space!! My husband & I work really well together because both of us need to be Alone sometimes.
A cruise sounds like the worst way to travel imo I can’t imagine being stuck around everyone for days at a time.
Ferries and boats are enough for me at this point in my life. I hate the idea of a cruise with a passion. But what I do love is the train and would totally pay good money to do one of those few day ones.
I don't have four year cruise money but I really want to write something about what concept
Like imagine getting off that thing after 4 years and like you just missed that now a huge war or something is happening
I'm highly critical of cruises anyways so these luckily never catch me, but I can't imagine being so out of touch that I'd fall for a four years long cruise to avoid the presidency
Imo simply spending some time in a place doesn’t mean you’ve really *been* there, like the influencer spending 10 minutes in a place to say she’s travelled there by that logic i’ve been to qatar and singapore and serbia because i spent a few hours in their airports during layovers to where i was actually travelling
Cruises i feel like it depends on how long the ship is in port for, but i do feel it’s more visiting a place than travelling to it if that makes sense
Damn, Swell started getting into it about selling tickets before even securing a boat and her tone kind of changed. Gimme more of that, please.
This!
Are there any GOOD vlogs from people who were on that 9 month cruise? Genuinely want to watch one
I'm planning a solo cross country scenic train ride. My folks to not like the thought of it, but I want the experiences while can have them 🤷🏾♀️
I've seen people fly abroad in the morning then fly home in the evening so they can say they've been to that country. Seems like a waste of money/carbon emissions.
One reason I like solo travel is I need my space so I feel you, Amanda.
This recent batch of videos made me start watch this channel again
just wanted to chip in as a married woman, my husband and i are perfectly fine with each other taking solo trips! we don't have kids tho, so it's a lot more flexible, but if you wanna continue travelling solo after marriage, it's possible! just make sure to have a good talk with your partner about it :) We travel a lot together and enjoy it but running off by myself is something that i enjoy as well
Thanks for this swell video Swell!

A friendof mine travels z lot, she loves to backpackcand meet people. She managed to do half her education in other european countries, mostly living in colocations and woofing. She also checked a lot of countries inpassing. She says that she doesn't considers she's lived in a country if it's for less than a month; like, yeah, technically she spends 3 hours in portugal, she'sbeen there, but that's as a tourist, not as someone who wants to enjoy Portugal

so long term cruises are basically like Snowpiercer, just on a ship in water instead of on a train....
7:30 As someone who went solo travelling twice - I have zero regrets. Can't do it at the moment, and don't know if I'll ever do it again, but I'm glad I did it. It was money well spent.

Rich people really do live in a whole different world
you can't be in search of something, you will get lost. you do it to explore, then its the best adventure you could ever have.
If a year-long cruise costs less than my property taxes then sign me up. Yo ho ho, and a bottle of rum!! 🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠
If you have CEO money WHY would you have a travel planner, you can just go there, rent a flat and live there for however time you want!
19:07 I feel this way about cobble stone and I’m 24
Oh. Yeah. I'd definitely just go by myself and not bother going along with other people if a long-term cruise is ever a consideration. I've had to find out the hard way that basically... I can't stand people. Or rather, I can't stand needing to consider other people because I physically am not able to tolerate the finicky whims of other people. Either they need to abide by my physical schedule and be extremely tolerant, or they can buzz off
I can't have people trying to dictate when or how I eat meals, whether or not we sit and rest a bit before getting up after finishing a meal, or when our restroom breaks are. Physically cannot tolerate these things, 'cuz I'm going to end up feeling super unwell if the timing is terribly off and I end up getting a migraine and make everyone else just as miserable as I am feeling. And this is also why I generally hate going on trips because all of these scheduling things with checkouts and the like. I need at least a day in between to settle down and rest =-=;; I'm a bit too old now to be rushing around everywhere and enjoying the experience. Personally, I'd rather like just holing up in a cavern somewhere and not be bothered ;w;
Ooh these reminds me of the book Escape Attempts by cohen and taylor
Watching this from my first cruise is surreal
I'm AFAB (nonbinary) and 26 rn and honestly ? Because of your channel I started traveling alone! I've been to Japan and Vegas multiple times and various other places it's so much fun! Now I make it a point to travel out of state 3-4 times a year and atleast 1-2 random local events a month. I'm also nosey and love reviewing/ talking about things but, idk how to edit videos or where to get video editing software that isn't a virus. 😅
Right... tourism is my thing, it's my job and it's something I really love (I work in different destinations year round so exploring is sorta an added bonus) but I do not understand these long travel options😅 as you said they get sick of each other eventually and it's been proven by research that at the moment short stays are way more viable anyway😂
Also, we joke all the time when the booking notes say honeymoon we will be witness to their trial on how strong their actual relationship is LOL
We fought so hard we had a 2 week no talk period after we got back...
i’m sorry if i hurt anyone’s feelings but cruises are the most superficial and damaging form of travel. when i say damaging i mean environmentally of course and to the local economy and social fabric of the touristic ports. they should cease to exist
babe wake up new swell video
I don’t cruise to experience local cultures, if I wanna do that I plan it myself 💀
