My mother was there in the early 70's . I can remember it like it was yesterday. So dark and depressing. So many pitiful people there . 😢

When I was an undergrad social work student at MTSU in the early 1990s, one of my associate professors was also a social worker a Central State. He would often talk about the history of the place but typically spoke of the horrible conditions there in the past tense and, on several occasions, spoke of putting together a visit and tour for his students to see Central State, but it never happened for whatever reason. Even around 1992, he was talking about how the facility would be closing in a few years and how a chapter of history would soon end.

My grandmother was a patient there in the 1970s & I hated that place. It smelled so bad & it was filthy. That one lady that said she worked there & it was lies...No you're the one lying. This place was horrible.

In 1995, the hospital moved to new facilities on Stewarts Ferry Pike. The original hospital buildings were demolished in 1999 to make way for Dell to build a large computer assembly plant.

They used to threaten us about sending us there when we acted up in grade school. Scared the sh!t out of us having driven past it regularly.

I actually wished there. As did my mother and my grandmother. There's a couple things on here that are not true.

@@garymckee63There's a small cemetery at the rear of the property but is difficult to access. Only story I heard about the place is that rocking chairs would rock on their own on the front porch. I worked per diem a couple times at the new facility that replaced it--Middle TN Mental Health Institute.
