lmao I was just thinking that.

"wait...you eat shit for breakfast??"

Gotta love Sir Patrick's ability to act. This is still Picard...but it's Picard as a military officer, not an explorer.
I kinda like this Picard
I just dont like the environment that caused it
If we saw it more it would be nice, but it ruins the exploration theme =\
Patrick can transition the role so well, and we would understand in a serious military issue
But this is the closes we get, besides Lepushas of Borg or random military encounters, usually turned into a chess match not a full fight
But also a Picard who remembers being a diplomat and a scientist and an explorer, long before all this fighting broke out. After all, he made Captain before most of his senior staff were even born; he remembers the good old days quite well.
Maybe there was a spark of hope in Guinan's vague unease. Other captains might have seen it Riker's way but Picard almost *wanted* to believe it on the off chance that the Starfleet he remembered could survive.
His differences are so subtle but consistent and very sensical for someone who had darker experiences but the same mind and sense of ethics.
I love how cold and combative the relationship is between Picard and Riker. They are not friends here, there is no camaraderie here. They may fulfill their respective duties, they may have mutual professional respect. But there is no warmth between them, which I think was a great decision to subtly illustrate the difference between this timeline and the normal one.
Also something that happens when you lose too much people while in command.
There are times, as a CO, where you have to put your foot down and make a decision.
That "cold and combative" relationship follows the proper Captain -1st Officer leadership duties. Requirement of these two people to be "friends" would prevent a Captain and 1st Officer from performing their responsibility correctly! If you've never served in a military unit, you just may not understand that. (I served in the US Army from '70 to '90 to understand that relationship.)
@@jessejohnson159 To command within the military requires a mind similar to a sentient algorithm with one purpose only: whatever duty demands of you. It's not very pleasant.
@@gandalf8216 And you think "It's not very pleasant." why? Especially in the military, there are rules on what's a legal order and what's not a legal order. And there is guidance on how not to follow 'illegal' orders. I guess I was fortunate not to have been given an 'illegal order' to follow and, to my knowledge, didn't give any 'illegal orders'. And I enjoyed my 20 years of service, even when I may not have 'liked' the NCO or officer I worked for!
I love how Picard is slightly more short-tempered and aggressive in this alternate timeline. Patrick Stewart doesn't lean into it too hard, but just enough that it's true to a Picard who still has his principles but had to face far more hardship than prime Picard.
Watched this episode a million times and never noticed Riker shaking his head is disgust walking out of the ready room
Turbolifts must be programmed to detect conversation within them. That’s when they slow down to half speed.
Works just like instagram which shows me pictures of things i talked a short while ago with other people. But i'm sure it's all coincidence i wouldnt dare accuse zuckerberg of nefarious , clandestine actions
Just like Spock when he was trying to get from the bridge to deck 2. Ive been on motel elevators faster then the turbolift Spock was on.
Well. . . ya see
Plot XD
"Who's been holding up the damn elevator?" -Leonard "Bones" McCoy
Notice how they're meeting in his Ready Room and not the conference room. They needed all of that space for Combat equipment and troops.
They do meet in the conference room in other scenes tho...but feels right that they use his ready room here, makes it seem more serious somehow
Conference room denotes a conversation. Ready room is an announcement. Fits the timeline well. Picard is much more of a military leader than a diplomat in this timeline.
They did a great job of conveying how much of a desperation move this was for Picard.
But on the other hand, especially in that timeline he will have a strong awareness of the necessity of being able to send people to their death. A theme also explored in the series at some point.
But then again... he will also have been weary from having done and seen that far too often.
Very surprising to bring back a character from past for this cool episode
Best episode in Star Trek history, on one hand I wish we would have seen more of this timeline...but on the other hand part of what makes this great is the super small glimpse we get
there were several short stories and even comics about this alternate timeline and alternates of it.
you should see what happens in STO because of this time line
@@duality4y What happens?
I dont have to read the comics XD
History my friend
The klingons fight the federation, both crippled the Romulins walk in XD
Replace Klingon with Caucasian, replace Federation with Egypt and Pharaoh, and the Romulians with the chinese and asians XD
History is written by the victor, who ever said the victor had to glorify themself? They just decide what to write XD
_Inner Light_ would like a word about that “best ever” comment…
The uniforms are superior to the defaults. I absolutely love the closed collars and the cuffs. The collar trim and flat black symmetry, the superior comm badges... they're just all fantastic. They look so sharp, and even younger somehow.
But those belts have to go.
When I first saw this episode I never thought I would see Riker to talk to his captain like that it was as if he was questioning everything Picard was saying.
My favorite episode for sure. So much rides on what happens when they go back.
This whole episode could easily have been made into a film, and replaced Generations
Definately, I hated Generations. I they killed Kirk, and Picard had a family.
Oh, and Enterprise D was destroyed.
This is the closest thing TNG did to a mirror universe episode!
@FreyXIX No. They still have a basic respect for life and officers aren't trying to kill each other in order to achieve rank.
The mirror universe was a very specific timeline, one in which the personalities and events were distinctly different than the norm, while most other aspects of existence remain very much the same. This alternate timeline is not the same at all.
@FreyXIX No alternate timeline, not alternate universe.
And thank god for that
@FreyXIX replaced
Love the tension between Riker and Picard in this timeline, and I love that they left it there to be picked up by the viewer without hitting you over the head with it.
To this day I feel a better “Nemesis” plot would’ve used Tasha’s half romulan daughter.
That would have worked, Nemesis was a lazy last story for the final TNG movie.
There’s some fan rumors that the plot to replace Picard came from her, but her failure to invade Vulcan in “Reunification” meant everything she was working on went out the window, along with her.
Bad idea from a producers (money) stand point, you want a movie to reach a broad audience and not one that depends on a small plot thread from an episode made 10 years before the movie's release which only well versed fans would understand.
@@flybeep1661 a scene with some exposition could easily solve that.
@@joermnyccould have worked if she replaced commander Donatra of the warbird Valdore.
Aligning with Shinzon, seeking to reestablish her career? Could make sense.
Would have been a far more emotional turn of events to have her show up at the battle.
What's a TKL ration? Beans, lots of beans.
pinTo, Kidney, & Lima
What about hot dogs?
The more you eat, the more you toot, LOL.
Riker: “Sir, that won’t accomplish anything.”
Picard: “I’m well-aware of your _opinion,_ number 1, but you’ll find that your opinion amounts to a hill of beans.”
Troi: 🫢
Riker: “that’s what I am to you? Beans?” 🫘
Worf: “I can affirm, commander. Captain Picard has not considered using a single suggestion I have made since I transferred aboard the _Enterprise.”_
Fart food
Data, an emotionless android, has the same intuitive skills as Troi, a Betazoid empath and a trained counsellor.
Who? remember, Troi is not present here. So, they would not know about her.
something something horseshoe theory
When an android is better at socializing than I am.
It was certainly one of the most interesting episodes written and the fact that Tasha was there was great
This version of Picard probably wouldn't have sent them back if the Federation were winning the war.
Yes because then there would be no reason to do so. He not only condemns them to their deaths but to his entire timeline when he sends them back, it is not linearly selfish of him as you might be thinking
He's clearly under enormous pressure, and is suffering under the strain of leading his crew into a lost cause. He's fidgeting with his hands behind his back, a subtle indication of the stress that he is trying to hide from his subordinates.
Probably. But we can’t be sure.
Originally Picard was against that idea to sending back the Enterprise-C. It possible Picard learn the Federation will lost the war against the Klingons between when he spoke with Guinan and when he speak with his senior staff. It's this what make Picard change his mind
I don't know...even if the Federation were winning, he would have to weigh the "they could prevent decades of war and tens of millions of deaths" argument.
Best use they did of Guinan’s character. Fits her personality and puts her in an unique position.
She could, for example, annoy Q by noticing the changes he make, but she would be powerless to prevent any of it.
Awesome plot device. Good writing.
I've often wondered if Guinan was a time lady, this was in the dark days of no who on TV *but was elsewhere) and this would be kinda cool!
Time Lady from Gallifrey, like Doctor Who?
🤓
@@misterlau5246 yes
@@julieeverett7442 Cool meta idea. 👍
That makes me think, now: When was the last appearance of Q? ... Voyager, right? ... Then much later there was Discord in MLPFiM, and only now that MLPFiM has ended, he pops up in STP again.
Data looking at the back of Tasha’s head: “If my x-ray vision interprets your facial expressions correctly, you are preoccupied with something else.”
Wouldn't be the first time he experienced something while looking at the back of her head.
He caught her profile in his peripheral vision (3:20, 3:23, 3:31, 3:33, 3:35); not really a problem with the logic of the visual narrative.
@@ColumbiaB Also not unlikely that he noticed the lack of talking/not immediately calling for a destination.
Yes, she is wondering why did she quit in the first place.
@@ColumbiaB Why has no one mentioned that they are also looking straight at each other?
He could have noticed her bad attempt at painting over her worries with portrayed courtesy.
This episode made me want a whole season about the Enterprise C. Also I wish they had used this episode to some how reintroduce the character of Tasha Yar in to the show..
I was thinking about the same idea about using of this episode to bring Tasha Yar back somehow. Pity it was not the case.
Imagine someone suddenly saying to you: "You've lived all your life up to this point but it has all been just an altered timeline and I've decided to end it."
And you're like: "Well then how do I know if I'm dead or alive? Okay let's end it."
I was in the military at the time this episode first aired. I was very disappointed in the first season of TNG and missed almost all of the second season. I caught this episode by chance and it renewed my interest in TNG. I decided at that point that I would never just give up on any Trek series again.
Hit and miss. You landed a hit.
But generally there is also great value in not taking the first impression as guideline, but allowing oneself time to process it (subconsciously).
1:11 That music gave me goosebumps.
Seems to me that a decision to alter the timeline requires approval higher than captain. Not that the higher ups would object given that the Federation was on the verge of being destroyed.
Not like it matters. If the timeline changes, their actions would be erased.
Makes me wonder how Temporal Affairs handled this incident once Commander Sela became known.
But that could cause even more of a mess. And Picard was probably the most qualified to make the decision. More qualified than Starfleet bureaucracy, arguably.
Probably one of the best episodes in all of Trek. Not only do you have the risk of changing all of history, but the human element, the effect it will have on you personally, is woven into the story.
Agree completely!
Thank you very, very much. Your work brings back so many good memories.
This is Shooter's Enterprise!
One of my favourite episodes of TNG, and pretty much the only episode where Tasha Yarr was bearable to me, besides the one where she bangs Data.
Guinan's time sensing ability is due to a part of her still being in the Nexus.
So , basically if they go back , they would become has " beans " ?
best episode ever of STTNG
Those 40 billion casualties are worth preserving this ship.
I'm not talking about the Enterprise.
The crew of this timeline seem remarkably comfortable throwing their lives away in the slim chance Guinan's right. I guess when you've seen war for 20 years straight, you'd feel the same way. Reminds me of "The Siege of AR-558" from DS9, months and months of heavy combat caused pretty much everyone there to start losing their minds.
Holy smokes, Denise sure was a hottie. I know, I know. I'm not supposed to focus on her amazing looks over her talent as an actor, but when you get slapped with that much beauty it's hard to concentrate.
Hay Tasha. Don't forget that Data is fully functional.
The thumbnail lol
Tasha!!
Cool to hear the computer sounds in the background
"what's a tkl"
"standard rations"
wow the future's so technologically advanced people eat keyboards for breakfast.
With extra gamer gunk
With a side of beans
My 1st thoughts it was some kind of cocktail that they all live to drink.
And it was never clarified what TKL stands for. I am wondering whether there were fandom brainstormings about this.
Tactical Kite Lanyard...
Attaches to a tactile kite to search out your enemy in combat. Like a drown only quieter. 😉😉😉
Is that shooter McGavin?
exactly what I was thinking! Glad they sent him back.
No, it's Tappy Tibbons
They're on minimum power so the replicators only make rations, yet they can keep ten-forward open and serve drinks.
3:07
When I don’t want to curse I say, “Sugar Ray Leonard rather than.. you know.
I just did that, because yeah… there’s realization here and it’s an interaction i personally find very memorable in the series having watched it originally aired.
“Wow, she’s realizing she may not exist in a far more peaceful time line! Yikes!”
I used to get Riker and Castile’s Actor confused as a younger. Got even more confusing seeing him with the Riker beard in THE FACULTY
It's been said many times but it's so great that Tasha got a proper send-off. Denise Crosby is great in this story.
3:40 Data doubles as Counselor Troi in this timeline. That must be a case of budget constraints forced by the klingon war. :(
The ability to manipulate time is the ultimate weapon.
~sets his clock ahead by 5 minutes~ I AM A GOD!
When Picard was the same as Jellico. "Dismissed"
Image how surprised they will be when it turns out Tasha Yar survived.
You give the C a dozen or so photon torpedoes that are set to self destruct if not used within say half an hour and upgrade the sensors to detect older cloaked ships with the same self destruct.
Maybe the same can be done with the phasers and shields.
Roll that beautiful bean footage.
I since some friction between picard and riker in this timeline.
Guinan was in the Nexus, the Nexus is non-linear. That is how she sensed something was ''Not right"
My UKW/UHF radio from the 1960ties is "non-linear" too.
@@pcuimac if it no longer exists, then it was linear.
I guess in this timeline the Explosion of the Moon Praxis didn't have the same effect ...
no quite, Castille did say that they were negotiating a peace treaty when they left space dock, I guess peace treaties come and go with the Klingon empire.
The Praxis moon explosion gave Klingon's time to get new resources and rebuild the fleet with the peace treaty.
@@starlight122012 I mean in the changed timeline where the enterprise dissapeared.
@@CrniWuk Well Praxis exploded decades earlier before Enterprise C disappeared.
So a period of peace between Klingons and Federation existed between the explosion of Praxis and the disappearance of Enterprise C.
In that time Klingons went about their normal business of building up resources, their fleet and whatever else they do.
I guess between Enterprise A and C; Klingons got into a disagreement with Federation and a new treaty was being formed as Enterprise C left Space Dock which they then went to rescue a Klingon outpost.
So everything up to the point of Enterprise C disappearing remained unchanged.
Like Picard said, 20 years of war with the Klingons.
If Enterprise C disappeared, it would consider it cowardly, and because Klingons died, the Klingons decided to attack the Federation for letting the Klingons die without helping.
Praxis was a Klingon problem, the Federation only dismantled starbases along the neutral zone to stop hostilities between species.
Per picards own statement, he shouldn't have sent tasha back. And per trek lore, she absolutely was captured, tortured, and of course led to Sela
I always thought that with everything that happened with the ENT C that Q had something to do with it, and I wouldn't even put it past him to get involved with saving the C so the Romulans could board her and take everyone to Romulus where the would have died in various ways save for Tasha. I think he might have had some interactions with Tasha after she died.
@FreyXIX It was a result of her time in the Nexus that gave her the ability to sense timeline changes.
"Is Engineering your destination as well?" "No, Data, care to go to the bedroom with me again?"
Shooter's gunna chock! The Green Jacket is yours!
Data is very informed and prepared but sometimes that all goes out the window when he should have known better
...it would be considered a meaningful act of honor by the Klingon Empire."
Always do what is right, it will always benefit you in the end
It's a mighty long journey to deck six. 🤔
You're my mom now...
IKR, LOL. It's supposed to be a moment of connection, to build their chemistry and rapport. But the way it plays out is a bit weird. I know what they were going for here, and the rest of the episode bears that out, but they don't quite stick the execution in this scene. Oh well.
"My mom calls me Richard."
"Okay, Castille."
"Actually, I think I'd prefer if you called me Richard."
Hol up.
Yea that was weird lol. Better to use Richards nick name instead.
"You can call me oedipus"
Little did Tasha know that his real name was Ben.
Castillo and Yar nawwww cute.
I wouldn't say no to a snuggle with Castillo though.
I wonder how long Data and Tasha dated in this timeline?
Soooo , Startrek 3 search for spock , Starfleet totally dismissed " vulcan mysticism " , now based on Guinin's intuition we send a ship and hundreds of people to certain death.
Protocol must have changed after the Spock thing.
Maybe Guinan is having her own personal-experience version of scruples, seeing how Tasha would be dead again if they 'fix' the timeline. Maybe she is even pondering the implication: How many people are not dead but alive due to the war? A troubling thought to pursue.
That Castillo wants Tasha to call him Richard *like his mother does* could be interpreted in multiple ways. 😄
3:07 That scene with Tasha having existential thoughts and entering the elevator with Data could be interpreted in a funny, fandom-humor kind of way. 😏
0:38 Bianca would call you Rickay.
so everyone calls him castille, but his mother calls him richard, and he wants tasha to call him richard, not creepy at all
"I eat beans like you for breakfast"
Picard I'm guessing wasn't cleared to tell Riker or chose not to that the Federation was on the brink of collapse against the Klingons.
Picard raised his own objection to this course of action quite strongly but was convinced that this extreme long(seemingly absurd) shot was the correct action but could prevent the very war they are losing so badly. Saving billions of lives. Not that this timeline Picard is cold and indifferent.
He is what circumstances demand he becomes.
Choosing between good and evil or between the good and bad options isn't much of a choice.
It's the choices that aren't so clear.
Do we approach from the west or the east?
Do we serve tuna fish casorole or meatless meatloaf?
This guy Richard Castille has got the rizz, I gotta say.
"There's a lot of things we don't know about Guinan's race". Well, Q tried to warn you but you were too thickheaded to listen.
Well they don't reset the timeline perfectly.
Don't they have a conference lounge in this universe? They are all stuffed in his ready room.
Data was right, and he was also wrong. They would not personally remember these events, but they will know they happened thanks to Tasha's daughter.
I kind of wish they had taken out the Guinan knows history has changed bit and just had the C go back for the reason Data gives here.
My opinion is that time line you are in, is the time line you are in. Sending the ship back changes their timeline, but you will go forward in yours.
Picard: Let me listen to a civilian instead of members of my staff and crew.
Incorrect - Picard listens to as much information as he can. He choose to act on the information provided by a source who has data beyond what can possibly be known by his staff…(all militaries use civilian sources of intelligence and all intelligence professionals will tell you that civilian intelligence sources are rich and invaluable; failing to consider it it out of hand for no other reason than it is ‘civilian’ is foolhardy at best and catastrophic at worst…)
Guinan knows more about this than any of the staff Picard can glean intelligence from and as such makes a choice to follow her advice - it is a high risk choice, but by no means an inconceivable one…
Thank God the Federation and Klingon Empire made peace, since it seems like Starfleet was no match for the Klingons in the long term.
I’m not sure why the entire senior staff are crammed into Picard’s ready room and not the observation lounge. All those chairs. 😆
Picard: I’ll go with Guinan’s recommendation …dismissed…And for God sakes, get rid of these chairs!!
He's over there hoping that TKO are made of his favorite breakfast 💩
So he wants Tasha to be his mommy
So he wants his romantic interest to call him the same as his mom.
"My mother calls me Richard."
"I think I'd rather you called me Richard."
Did he say he wanted her to be his mommy?
Castillo is old enough to be her dad.
I loved this episode!!
1:37
But, couldnt you ask Guinin if the equipment would negatively affect the present?
The whole reason for the episode (Tasha Yarl) caused a rift sending back
You know that Borg problem? 24th century weapons in the 23rd perfect, rince and repeat till the Borg is fucked. The klingons open up after the attack ether way
An episode where Riker doesn't have a love interest?? Hmm, curious. However I suppose that explains why he is opposed to Picard sending the ship back. He hasn't had a chance to bang any ensigns. But in fact Picard did Riker a favor because Castille was already winning 1-0
It's a military vessel. Riker probably only does his funny business during shore leave.
He should have tried for another role in the hay.
it's too bad they didn't explore the Guinan character more. I hope Whoopi Goldberg is up to play her again. I heard she might be on Star Trek Piccard.
I feel like Guinan's species has a lot of power, maybe comparable to Q. Obviously he was afraid of her, like she could do something to him. And yet the Borg were able to take them. Maybe it was a different branch of their culture, that hadn't ascended to the same level.
0:40 Friendzoning is futile.
I still don't understand. If Yar exists in this alternate universe how can her daughter exist in the proper universe. It makes no sense.
thank you :)
Richard.
I had such a crush a Yarr that i inevitably got a woman who looked just like her pregnant
Tasha seems to have Vampire Bite marks on her neck.
