Maybe we could even angle the beam straight through the force field that covers the back end of the bay, so that it's firing into the vacuum of space instead?"
"I do not believe so Commander. This weapon is clearly an illegal and possibly cheaply made knock-off. It is possible that its power source may be dangerous or otherwise not designed for this intended purpose, not to mention the possibility of potential booby traps that may cause the weapon to overload once we start fiddling around with it, so we must position it as close to the warp core as possible, in the event of it self-destructing. This would have been better done in the cargo bay. The film crew must have had the big set occupied by a holodeck or a cave set at the time this was made. They really didn't have many options before Season 5. They also used the Engine Room as a gym. Sick Bay was the same set as the Observation Lounge, with the windows covered, and two walls changed. They also used the Bridge set in almost every single episode.

Clearly it’s true what they say, just because you’re academically gifted doesn’t mean that you possess common sense. In fact Star Trek is full of examples that prove this. A joule is a unit of energy.
A watt is a unit of power, that is, energy over time. One watt equals one joule per second.
Watts per second would be a measure of an increase in power. One watt per second means that power increases by one watt every second. Example: You start with 10 watts. You apply 3 watts per second for ten seconds. At the end, you have 40 watts.
"Mega" is just a number, It means one million. Megawatt = one million watts, etc.

Almost all of the comments are about gun safety and about the choice of where they were conducting the tests. Couple of things to consider:
There's no one else in engineering aside from Geordie and Data. That tells me they cleared out everyone else while they conducted the tests.
Data is an android, which is why he's on the opposite end. If he made the mistake of walking in front of the beam, it probably wouldn't have done anything to him.
While I will agree that engineering is probably not best place to conduct this type of test, my guess is that they put up forcefields in case of a ricochet.

Actually I am not sure they did. If you had a flower and you didn't know what it was Googling would get you an answer but would take time. If you suspected it was a rodendendron then you would just Google rodedendron. So I suspect that they just compared the phaser to Romulan technology first - and would have done the search if their suppition proved incorrect.

@@danielyeshe That would just mean that the weapon was BASED on Romulan technology, not that the Romulans were necessarily behind it. For example, in Star Trek the Klingon cloaking device is based on the Romulan cloaking device. By your analogy they would look at a Klingon cloaking device and say "Romulans!"

Out of all the labs, holodecks and various other safe areas on the ship, they choose to fire a phaser rifle next to warp core? Without the blast door down, or even mention of a force field around the core. I'm sure that Worf could have lent them a rifle range.

  • @pwnmeisterage

Romulan-made knockoffs of Federation rifles have all the same functions and features but also "efficiency well above Starfleet specifications". Is Romulan weapon technology more advanced?
(Ignoring arguments about unsafe idiots doing weapon tests in the engine room, already been said a few dozen times.)

Equivalent. Romulan power cells probably burn out faster due to to the higher output and forced pulse.

Romulans apparently suffer from a scarcity of resources. Or at least an acute consciousness of limited resources. (Even though the Romulan Star Empire is vast enough to have many abundant worlds.)
TNG Romulans sometimes fixate on the idea of obtaining "unlimited power sources".

rredhawk the downrange part didnt bother me because phasers are energy projectors and have no, or nearly no, recoil. Or shot spread.

What i find interesting about this episode is how Geordie is programmed only to do specific tasks at specific times not to aid the Romulan cause generally, the episode shows him helping the investigation against him and here with the weapon.
