I personally like throwing out at least one 10 foot rod in the second gut. And two 8 footers, one in the first gut and one in the second guy. I also vary my bait, I use crab, mullet, and fish bites. This cover different species.
I do agree about the lack of fight on a longer rod... I prefer a shorter rod. But the increased distance for casting combined with a longer rods ability to keep your line up and above the waves/weeds make them invaluable for most surf trips.
I have several combos for surf. Bob hall pier setups. Jetty setups. But fishing PINS when I'm not shark fishing. I use 10ft oceanmaster rods. With sealine sha30. Those have upgraded boca bearings in them. 40lb strait braid spooled on it. My Jawbones and Harrington 552 rods are all 10ft. But I use those for other things. Throwing a big spoon at the surf. I also use oceanmaster spinning rods but in 9ft. I use diawa blk gold 5000 reels with 40-50lb braid
12 and 13 ft conventional rods for long distance casting , and also if there's abounch on seaweed in the shallow water. Long rods are good because u or other people can easily walk under the lines . Long rods 10-15 ft are also meant for 8 and bait. And also those rods are also meant for big fish and sharks up to 8 ft long
I hear ya, but still prefer 11-13ft for surf fishing, better for throwing out heavier bait and keeping more line out of the water for less chance of seaweed snag
Use what your comfortable with. Great video. Thanks! for being real. People who don't live on the coast don't need to waste their money. Get out with the wife or family and make memories. 🐠🐟🐡🎣🎣
Hello from Alaska. My wife and I will be there in Port Aransas on 9 Jan for a month. I always bring my fly rod however are there places to possibly rent a surf rod outfit? Thanks, be cool to run into you on the beach while I’m there. Take care.
@ I’ve decided to bring a reel and look for an eight footer once I get there. Hopefully I can find a decent rod not overly expensive because I’ll have to leave it when I depart. Thanks for your videos, and good luck with your guide service, I think you’ll do great.
@Lakertaker05, you will mostly be able to find a suitable rod at the local WalMart. They carry a good selection and the prices are better than the tackle shops.
I use an 8'6" salmon/steelhead rod for catching whiting and lady fish. Then use that on a 12' to reach out there to catch blacktip shark! Catching reds abd trout on the shorter rods is a lot more challenging.
I would not want to throw a 1oz spoon with a 13' rod. And I would not attempt to reach the back of the 2nd bar with an 8' rod. Use the right tool for the specific application.
Sounds like you haven't learned how to cast the long rods the right way. Short rods have their place for fishing the close water while watching the long rods.
@@aydensmith664 distance does not always catch more fish. i can hit second gut with 8 footer. It just feels better with a short rod when reeling in the fish
Thanks for watching . Please comment below what works best for you surf fishing
Happy New Year to you as well. I, like you, also prefer the short rod. Tight Lines!!!

10 foot would seem tp be better. I may try one and see how it goes
@texasbeachbum Oceanmaster is lite but powerful rod. Bass pro sells them.
Good show
thanks

yea and I'm not after sharks. I'll stick with my 8's they seem to work better for me
13 is to big
What a wicked intro, I love that!

Me and my wife bring 2 10ft, 2 13ft ,1 hvy 12ft, ... but on the louisiana coast you never know what will hit your bait

Most people that buy long rods can cast past the 1st gut..😂😂😂
I can hit the second gut

Nah a generic 8foot Penn combo that’s underspooled with line will outcast a 13 foot breakaway any day of the week…… not….;)
