Passed my ABOC and NCLEC in 10 weeks (8 Weeks for ABO and 2 Weeks for NCLE) Just wanted to thank you for all your videos and explinations. They were very helpful.
Thank you for all you do, great educator! I will say that I studied for about 2 solid weeks before passing the NOCE. I do have over a decade of hands on experience (although I run a super successful optical/optom-my day to day knowledge necessity is very different than what the ABO tests for), but my point is-if you cram-it is possible to pass with just a small amount of prep time. Good luck everyone!
@@LaramyKOptical Hi John, Thanks for the reply! I felt like it's the right thing to do. Not that I care a ton what others think, but I work in a licensed state and my peers are super judgmental against those that not certified. The accomplishment has made me feel great, but it also just serves as proof to my perceived "haters" that I do know what I am doing and have earned my position. I've learned a fair amount through the process and plan to bring some of it into the day to day operations to help myself/staff do a better job. With your help I was able to comprehend some of the more complex formulas and how to work them- I will always sing your praises! Take care :)

I am so thankful for this channel and John's teaching that I created a RUclips account specifically to say "THANK YOU!!!". I just passed The ABO and I couldn't have done it without these videos! I was enrolled in another optician training program and was not getting the help I needed from that professor, thankfully I found what I needed here to better understand the optical math that was haunting me. I wish I had know about Optician Works sooner so I could have signed up with their training program from the start. Thank you!
Thank you for posting these videos, and the practice exam on your website. I passed my ABO on the first try after completing the Penn Foster on-line program.
Did the program all the way through and unfortunately did not pass. Will be working harder the next time. Have to say that the practice ABO questions were far from the actual test.
Hi John! I'm pleased to tell you that I've been in contact with the College of Opticians here in Alberta, and am set to write my Competency Gap Analysis - part of our Prior Learning Assessment for those wanting to challenge the Nacor exam - tomorrow morning, and I have to thank you immensely for all your guidance and advice through your videos. I've been watching them rigorously over the past few days, and feel as confident and ready as I can be. I'll find out fairly soon how well I've done - they say within a week - and should I score high enough, I'll be able to take the Nacor when it next comes around, which I believe is in March here in Alberta. Cheers, and Happy New Year! 🤓
@@LaramyKOptical thank you John. Pleased to tell you, I've already submitted my PLAR package and went through the process, passed the Competency Gap Analysis test, and (after just over a decade in the field) am now a Provisional Licensed Optician. I'll be registering for the Nacor in September.

She does pretests, fittings, ordering, etc. She really wants to get this certification and I'm looking into things to help her. Is there required education paths you need before you can take this exam and become certified? Or are you able to do your own sudying (via your training program or other means)? She has a high school degree and some college, but wasn't able to finish (this was years ago). No. Texas has strong opticians group but no legal state requirements to be an optician. Anyone can take the ABO. The ABO is used by a few states as a certification but it is NOT a US or an America wide level.

Can someone help me understand how a Diopter is calculated for a minus lens? For a plus lens it makes perfect sense, how far before the rays converge. However, rays never converge going through a minus lens. I've searched every term and keyword I could think of and no website seems to address this. Thank you!
Curt, You'll need to dig into a book on geometric & visual optics. You can also find some good stuff on RUclips. We have a geometric optics course in development but I have no idea if it will ever get completed. Like the "medical" anatomy and physiology stuff it isn't really all that important to the day-to-day working life of an optician. Truth is, I'm just not very good with it anymore and I simply can't find anyone else to do it! It's not from a lack of trying! Sorry. John
Hi Curt, that being said. As far as visualizing this for a minus lens, if you look at the light rays diverging from the minus lens. All you have to do is trace the rays along the same trajectory back through the front of the lens. The distance between the point the rays meet would in front of lens and the lens itself is the distance you would use to calculate the magnitude of the lens power.
Very nice, that makes a lot of sense. I highly enjoy the information you make available through your RUclips channel, as well as the production value of everything. One of my favorite channels on RUclips. Thank you for everything John.
