I got out of the rat race early this year without really any back up plan. Best decision I ever made! I refuse to give some of the best years of my life for a corporate job that's soul sucking. Since quitting, I no longer hate Mondays and don't even keep track of what day the week is. I get to spend time with people I love and enjoy beautiful days and evenings taking a jog or riding my bike!
this is in my 2 year plan!! congrats!!
Weekend? What weekend? It's weekend everyday! No backup sounds scary as I did it with a lot of financial cushion.
been doing it for a year now (last day of work was May 11, 2020). After covid and the market crash, I found everything a joke so I quit my job and travelled through the East Coast seeing some old friends and also living with my sister in Maine. I cant believe a year has gone by already and I am very grateful for this leap of faith. Since then I have also picked up photography @KodakVak and also this channel on RUclips has some videos of me trying to teach what I learned in college and also a career in Wealth Management!
I just did the same thing. I love Monday’s and I don’t get the Sunday evening blues any more!
Yes! I actually like mondays cuz it’s the start of the week and I have 5 days to go places without crowds before the following weekend comes.
You have information with value. I didn't come from a family that helped each other. I appreciate your financial information.
Thank you!
Thought it was just me
Baby steps:
1. Live below your means
2. Aggressively pay off debt
3. Save and invest like a mofo
4. Make darn certain your investments are viable long-term
5. Resign peacefully, even if you don't like your boss

Yes, RUclips income can take place of huge amounts of investment income but it may not be stable. For example, using the 4% rule, $330/month worth of RUclips income is equivalent to $100k of investments.
I like what you said but I believe one of the reasons you have been successful is by the shear frugality instilled in your life style. It PAYS to be extremely frugal. In the long run you haven't missed out on much but you have gained financial freedom.
Probably half the story to be frugal. It's like another engine that gets you to FI. You cant be just frugal and not make any money at all. But frugal AND make money? That will speed you to early retirement fast.
It also simply pays, to do something you like and earn a lot of money. So you don't have to be frugal, and still reach financial freedom.
I am still inspired by you and am close to my goal of retiring early. Thanks for making videos man. You are changing people's lives.
Would be great if people are even more productive after retiring because they are doing much more of what they love.
BTB--hope you're doing well. Your content helped me over the years as I ran to FI. While I don't need so much advice these days, I'm glad you are putting it out there for others! Best
I really think being frugal will keep you FI.
I've been telling myself that I want to give youtube a shot just for a year but exactly what you said its easier for me to veg in front of TV after a stressful day at work. Thanks for the inspiration 🙏 I'll report back to you in a year!
No many people is willing to push so hard for so long. Try putting your disdain from your job into hard word for a side gig.
Subbed. Get it going 😛
I'm an introverted accountant. Socializing is a pain to me lol.
I make as much on RUclips as my regular job but I’m scared to take the leap 😱. Good video!
Atleast your honest it will work out you got options.
@@williamlewis3582 thanks!
My next step in life is to save even more money than I'm already saving and your channel is best for that!
I tend to save so hard it hurts, it's probably a problem.
Thanks for the inspiration! I don’t think people realize how hard it is to make a RUclips channel and be successful. I have done it for some years, but nowhere close to where YOU are. Maybe for fun, but no one knows. ✌️
You have to quickly learn what to do right to have the channel grow. There are actually channels that are much better at I am growing one.
Cool 😎 man ! Sharing information is the best you can help others succeed!
Thanks for the insight. Introverted software engineer here. I am also thinking of quitting and trying something myself. I may already have enough money to retire, but us engineers can never stop working. Some other possibilities for making money on your own:
- Algotrading. Since you have an EE background, you probably have some background in signal processing, which would be useful for building a trading algo. It is not difficult to write a simple algo that will consistently outperform SPY or other major indices. Platforms like QuantConnect make it is easy to backtest and deploy algos.
- Selling online courses through a platform like Udemy.
- Sell a software tool used by a very specific or niche industry. Everyone wants to create the next billion dollar Uber for lawnmowers. But you don't have to aim high, there are plenty of industries and businesses that are still integrating into the digital world.
I wish I had the ability to be an engineer like you, such an incredible career. I worked at a marine service center and would freelance on the side, 60-90+ hours a week. The journey is fun, and people nowadays will tell me I was taken advantage of by my employer. Getting up early when it was dark, humanity from the Florida morning fogged my windshield, smoking a cigarette with no one on the road...(Those were the best morning.) I did that for 3 years until I could only freelance. I quit smoking too. I grew up in a house that was one step away from being a trailer, looking back I feel proud. I am surprised how short the “grind phase” was.
Same, the true grind for me was only about 1 year.
Glad to see I'm not the only introverted engineer who decided to start a RUclips channel! Nice to see that it can work. Thanks for this video!
Speaking skills certain improve as you do it.
Doing a side thing while working the normal job for at least a year or two until it makes some income is the way to go. I think this is the most honest videos I saw, didn't try to market any course, just explained the way to achieve it. Thank you for the video.
I’m also an electrical engineer. Graduated college in 3.5 years, got a job straight out of college for 80k, been here for 2 years and now making 90k. I really want to get out of this 9-5 life at 30 years old. I’ve got 7 years left to do it
If you didn’t do RUclips, do you still think you’d find a way to retire through something else? Maybe through your own small business, investments, or real estate or something?
I gotta admit, I’ve been slacking off when it comes to my dream of retiring. Time to keep pursuing it
I probably could still retire strictly with dividends but may make much less. May have to find another source of income.
Quitting the 9 to 5--more than just a pipe dream. Thanks for the video! Works with a lot of FIRE concepts.
Your work ethic bro!
I work on call only but I’m in the medical field so it’s possible. I work about 10 shifts a month. I love Monday’s now and don’t get the Sunday evening blues anymore. Working for corporate masters is not my jam anymore. Destroys my vibration.
Sunday evening blues because you are called to go back to something you are not that excited about. Funny how the majority puts up with this for their entire life.
Thanks for posting this, I am starting my own niche PF (personal finance) RUclips channel soon and you breaking it down into reality on what it takes in terms of hours per day and commitment and realizing this is a long term play and not short term process was very helpful. Appreciate it.
You're welcome!
Vintage BTB here. Love your videos friend.
Thank you!
Hey Frances, just an idea to freshen up your kitchen, you can paint the cabinet white or silver. That will increase appeal and value.
Maybe I can just invest to make some money and pay someone to do it for me? I really don't enjoy remodeling with my own hands.
@@BeatTheBush Yes that's a good idea!

I love my job as a teacher and I earn very good here in Germany. But I've been in different cities and schools before, where I was confronted with sexual harassment, racism, bullying and much more from my school principals and colleagues. So I thought it must be so nice leading the life of a loved house wife lmao.. Now that I moved away and listened to my heart I'm very happy and wouldn't know what to do at home.. I already travelled the world, not enough of course, but now I'm into new tech products and creativity.. Other than that I'd be bored to death without my funny students
You can always try to teach online courses
@@danielj999 it's not the same as going out and meet people face to face! And I say this as an introvert. Sitting at home infront of the computer makes a lot of people sick
After you move away, isn't your new place now your home?
@@BeatTheBush it is. I have no family and friends are all over the world, but here in this new city I feel safe and loved. But I'd rather go out for work instead of sitting at home infront of the screen. I need that socializing, moving, touching and change of places. And it is much better when there is a purpose or goal behind it.
I bet Germany is a cool place to live
Hi Frances, I really enjoy these videos where you reflect on your journey and your process and I am sure that you will find your way forward with purpose...it is so important to not only think about being free FROM something (like the restrictions of a certain kind of job, even if we like it) but also and foremost about being free TO ... to be, to do, to explore, to create, to have time...why do we want to be free? towards what? I am still working a lot on different aspects of living life on my own terms, and it can be tricky in many ways, but I feel it is the only way...at the moment my challenge is moving away from the city which has become too stressful for me, especially in these past times...and moving towards having more nature around me, more space, less noise...I still have some things retaining me to the city, work is one of them, and I am trying to figure things out...it is truly a process and I think it keeps evolving...best wishes to you and all
Thanks for your kind words!
Great video and it's practical, real world advice that you actually went through yourself! I agree with working on additional things, specifically having multiple sources of income/assets, and developing new skills. I feel that once you get pass the survival phase and especially when you're earning 100k/yr while having little to no debt, you have time to truly think in peace. Congrats on all your successes and creating something truly valuable for the world!
I sit around and think in peace about investing ideas. Then once or twice I year, I'm like A HA!
😂
Thanks for sharing bud, very inspirational!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’ve been thinking about selling my car and investing it all..
Don't sell things you need.
Is it newer? a 2019 to 21? Sell it fast if you got payments and get into something cheap if your looking to invest. But dont leave yourself stranded.
If you enjoy EE have you thought about consulting or freelance? Having a project could give you a challenge and sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.
My old neighbor drove a school bus after retiring early for the health insurance. I’m thinking night stocking and substitute teaching.
How many hours a week does that require? Maybe it's fun to drive a bus?
It’s basically part time, I think probably 20 hours or so, running kids for a few hours in the morning and afternoon. I Varies by municipality, I guess, but you gotta be able to put up with kids yelling and trying to shiv each other.
Thanks for sharing! Lots of good points to think about
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the insight it means alot for everyday people who dream of being financially independent.
You're welcome!
I like your topics 👍
Have you ever thought of doing engineering at a nonprofit? I know a lot of engineers i work with were tired of being treated like a tool. You have skills that you could use to help handicapped people with equipment and it might be fulfilling work.
Wow, thanks for being honest.
Any time!
it's so true that a lot of people find it more easy to take instructions from other people (as much as i'm sure most people don't like to be ordered around), maintain a 'secure' income and perceived job security and then completely veg out or zone out after work and on the weekends. and a lot of people take it to extreme lengths by taking drugs and drinking alcohol which probably indicates how much they hate their life that they're seeking this type of escapism where they're not even able to think straight. five days working for someone else is way too much imo.
in my own situation, i really was so exhausted by the time i got home from work that there really was very little else i had the energy to do after showering and eating dinner.
I felt the same while working. It took everything I've got to push myself to get up and work myself out of it.
I know the feeling. The 40 hour week is just enough to keep you off balance, and spending time working on a plan cuts into your rest which hinders your ability to learn and integrate new changes. It’s an uphill battle and I empathize with people who fall back into the rat race.
YES! Learning Electrical Engineering is fun. If I didn’t need health insurance, I’d go back to school for classes, this time art, anthropology, biology, psychology. Learning is so much fun!
The school sometimes have health plans you can purchases through them.
Health insurance is not that expensive on the ACA. (healthcare.gov) And if you make less than about $50K a year, the subsidy (to pay your premium) is quite generous. This is for US residents. You can shop the marketplace for free. Why lock yourself into a life you don't like?
You can do it with selling options 😁
👆
Yes sir! Pick long term type companies, sell covered calls, or cash covered puts, and you're making steady income monthly.

With an EE degree, why not work as a Tesla engineer? Just to say you did it, if nothing else.

Personally, I’d rather work to wrap up a couple items for eBay than to work for an employer where I have no say/freedom. I’ve had my fair share of sh*t jobs in retail and I gotta say I have no desire to ever take a job like that again. Save your money, be frugal if you must but not too frugal and invest.
Resale on eBay IS indeed better than having a boss. But not all jobs are bad, I just wasn't lucky enough to have one of those in my last position. I've had really enjoyable positions before though.
Great video, good luck with your investments! You picked great with dog coin!
Thanks!
have you considered growing your own food? Potatoes, carrots and radish are the easiest in grow bags or kiddy pools. Since you already solved the problem of earning money outside of a 9 to 5. Maybe not having to pay for food a couple months out of the year might excite you. There's also the solar energy niche I've seen around on YT. So many of what you do cross over with topics on YT, so much that they often recommend it after I watch your vids. Keep it up.
Yes. I don't have enough land to feed myself and I found I hate farming. I actually tried growing a few things and hated tending to it daily. Now I don't even regrow my green oninos.
@@BeatTheBush It does take time and knowledge. It's not worth the effort unless you find it gratifying. Food isn't really a big expense for me, but it would still be nice if all I had to buy with was say rice for a few times out of the year. And I would freeze the veggies.

Do you think it is worth living abroad for 10 years so I go back with enough money to be free? I think we have a psychological need to work. Even if I had enough money I would still find something to do, so I am not sure if 9 to 5 is so bad after all. I am not sure if sacrificing years from life is worth it. My parents will be 10 years older, my friends and everyone would have moved on and forgotten me.
DogeLove for you bruh, cool vid!
great concept. :)
I adore your willingness to tell us what it was like for you and how you did this for yourself. for those that are lacking will power to do it would personal coaching or life coaching be good just for the accountability factor?
I think so but I was too cheap to pay for that kind fo stuff. Will power is very limited.
Would love to collab/speak with you. I recently paid off all my debt and am getting laid off in a few months. I'm a reseller part time but will do this more full time. I won't need much each month but curious to your thoughts on investments and such. Let me know if you're interested.
The easiest way to financial independence is: learn to live on half your income and invest the other half. In less than 10 years you’ll be generating returns equal to what you’re living on, thus financial independence. Keep going for exponential growth. I only chose to keep working because at this point I can’t find anything better to do with my extra time :) If I find a wife that likes to travel and shares the same hobbies, this might change.
Or until side income exceeds expenses plus a good margin. Same thing but looking at it a different way.
I like this vid. Good insight.

Health Insurance is more than 2 car payments - $1,000, and then a $5,000 deductible, and co-pay. How do you handle health insurance.
I pay it out of my own pocket. It will get more expensive as you age so perhaps I will move to another country later lol.
How do you feel about paying off a mortgage. I kept funds in cash to buy an investment property, but dang, everything is being outbid $20K to $30 every month since last year - I decided today to forget it. Maybe put it into my mortgage and take the interest saved and put that in the market - what's your thought on this strategy, or is there a better strategy?
To pay off a mortgage means you wont get as much possible gains in the market. What you buy yourself is peace of mind, something I chose.
I stopped doing ebay last year after the pandemic rush. The fees & scammers were just not worth it anymore.
Sometimes you get more scammers if you just start an account.

I hope you succeed in your search for more meaning in life. If not, I wouldn’t fret about it if I were you. Not everybody finds or has a vocation, and some of the most interesting people actually never figure it out.
The tricky part is even if you listen to someone who has some idea on how to find your meaning of life, it seems the words are useless because you still have to figure it out yourself.
Are you still making beats? I thought you had an MPC awhile back. An update would be cool if you are still doing it.

Also I have to spend the next year in Europe for work so my side "hustle" is going to be freelance writing and blogging. Any help or tips would be appreciated.
I made one on this when I first quit my job. I think it was called 'I quit my job'. Tip is to have about 3x your burn rate in side income for 6 months. This gives enough buffer room so a sudden drop in income wont take you negative. But then I was doing it very safely.

Nothing could be further from the truth. This is the most untrue statement ever uttered by a person. We are extremely limited in potential due to things such as family responsibilities and health issues. Think deeply before making rushed statements like this.
I think you missed the point but thanks for that.
This is just so untrue, Miriam Strauss. Unlimited potential is only a dream, not reality. You can dream about it all you want, but it's NEVER going to happen. If we had unlimited potential, we would all be elite geniuses, athletes... Da Vinci, Einstein.... heck even Superman.... you get the point. The person who thinks or says this is disillusioned.
How much do you make from RUclips? 10-20k?
That will have to wait until I make a how much I make on RUclips video.
@@BeatTheBush plz make it soon. Will give me a target to achieve
Do you feel like all the money you spent on college and text books was a waste?
No. Electrical engineering is my passion and I still love knowing about it. It was so mysterious how calculators work when I was young and if I didn't know how even now, it would drive me crazy.
@BeatTheBush do you still mess around with electronics ?
My husband and I achieved lean fire status about a year ago...completely agree, it’s not all rainbows and butterflies. Happiness is a moving goal post...I have been assigning myself impossible tasks every week just so I can stay busy and feel some sense of accomplishment when those tasks are completed.
Don't search for happiness. Search for the meaningful.
What was your fire figure?
You start to get to what is the meaning of life if you start thinking about happiness and meaning. One way that could help is don't think too hard.
Any plans for BTB Jr?
Possibly.
We will get there eventually, like if you agree! 👍
Be sure to put in your 40 EXTRA hours per week for YOURSELF.
Thanks BTB. I've noticed it really is beneficial to have a plan/structure for the day 0 after the 9 to 5. I wish I knew this before hand, and really noticed some friends/family having similar issues when they transitioned to FIRE and moved away from their traditional job.
I'm still trying to figure it out myself, it's been hard.
I know this question touches on a possibly sore subject, perhaps, not for you as, you have the financial means. But, what if a person finds themselves wanting or needing to return to a job, if YT doesn’t work out for them?
What I means by this is not simply ugh of doing so. But, many jobs out there do not like gaps in employment. Further more, if they see that you lived by having a YT channel and a YT channel that is about independence, you may as well punch the interviewer in the face as, they like to hire sheeple.
I even remember, many years ago, going to an agency for an interview and, I guess, because I’m black and female, one woman said to another, right in front of me, that I probably have a gap in my resume, because I was in jail. The reality is that I’ve never been convicted of a crime or been to jail. Actually, I came from a family of decent means and my stepfather was a global speaker. Gaps in my resume were due to me being able to be choosy and, as a black person, sometimes, just not being hired.
And, a person might think that, perhaps, I’m on the fence about being independent. Noooooo. If anything has sh*t tested me for introversion, it’s been WFH for the past year. Talk of us returning to work has sent me right off a diet and into depression and I have to convince myself that it’s not a death sentence. But, I would HHHATE to become independent and, then, be re-introduced into the time wasting, mind numbing work culture that is out there.
Also, where do you see yourself as you age? I ask because, you are younger than I am. I think you’re still single and so am I. When I look out on the dating scene. My eyes glaze over. So, when you spend all this time alone and I find myself working on a lot of little house projects and want to get to doing some animation, when I look at dating sites it’s like it feels more like a compromise, than an opportunity. I don’t mean to change the subject mad, this is certainly off topic. But, it was on my mind and I understand if you don’t respond. Just figured I’d ask. I can safely say that, as a woman, who’s lives independently and likes these projects and HHHATES the 9-5, which feels like, other than paying bills, is mere interference, I don’t see myself switching to being a very domesticated woman, where I might have to have food on the table constantly and I realize that a lot of men, particularly as they age, want this, no matter what they have to offer.
The job market is racist. We live in a racist world. But not everyone is racist.
@@KC-nk6ih well, obviously, racism is on a spectrum, including those who are not racist.
When I quit the sheeple job I knew full well it'll be very hard to get back nor will I want to. Actually, I make much more than working as an engineer now if you factor in all the investment gains I had since quitting. I attribute the gains to all the time I have for analyzing the purchases since I don't have to work. I also have a girlfriend that is never on camera and this is intentional.
@@BeatTheBush understood and I’m not calling you sheeple. I’m saying that there are a great many who blindly embrace it. There’s a difference in going to work, because you’re simply responsible for yourself and embracing it to the point of blindness. You know the difference.
