      @@michaelmcgrailengland My Mother loved Caruso, we have all of his recordings and listened to them so often together. Your restoration was truly perfect; we were all deeply moved and it meant such a lot to hear it as the ceremony's opening piece of music. Again, sincerest thanks.

    I grew up listening to this recording and only now can I truly appreciate his vocal genius. Aside from the obvious beauty, depth and security of sound , he was also capable of such subtleties as the perfect trill he adds on measure 24 ....not even light tenors attempt this ornament and Causo was a dramatic.

      Darker and heavier voices should NOT have a harder time having trills and agility. It’s a complete myth. All voices should be able to glide up and down the scale as fast as the fastest lightest soprano, including the dramatic basses

      @TimothyJonSarris Год назад +1

      @@stone301 agreed, with the correct training no matter what voice type, this should be possible. Unfortunately, however, it’s not always the case.

      @@michaelmcgrailengland, Ihre guten Restaurationen zeigen umso mehr, wie großartig E. Caruso wirklich war! Danke dafür. In manchen Ihrer Videos habe ich einen Hinweis auf meine 'Caruso-Einstellung' auf einem Equalizer gebracht. Dies ist *NICHT als Kritik Ihrer* Bemühungen gedacht, sondern soll zeigen, dass bei der *Wiedergabe* einer *gegebenen* Aufzeichnung mit moderner Technik je nach Anlage subjektiv doch noch ein weiteres 'Quäntchen' Hörqualität erreichbar ist (besonders bei *alten* Aufnahmen aus der Caruso-Zeit)! Sie ist ja nur *ein Teil* der Übertragungskette. Bei qualitativ unterschiedlichen Lautsprechern leuchtet das selbstverständlich ein. Viel Freude weiterhin mit dem großen Tenor.
      Der Applaus übrigens stört nicht. Wer das nicht akzeptiert, sollte nie ins Konzert oder die Oper gehen mAn.

    Богатейший тембр, Карузо и Ферьер два уникальнейших голоса не наслушаться! Карузо великий и непревзойденный, все краски жизни и стоны живой души! И великолепный вокал, что, впрочем одно без другого и быть не может.

    Have the earlier recordings been subject to this restoration process? Some previous processes reduce the background hiss but deaden the voice. This doesn't.

    • @michaelmcgrailengland
      @michaelmcgrailengland  3 года назад +5

      Thanks for listening to this one also.
      Yes I have used my restoration process to (hopefully) improve the audio quality and give it a slightly more true-to-life sound. The process does, unfortunately increase low frequency noise and I only reduce the noise to a level where I think that it doesn't overshadow and spoil the enjoyment of the music.
      In my opinion the CD companies don't really restore these old recordings they just remove noise and in the process actually degrade rather than improve the sound of the music. Noise and music are mixed together like the flour and yeast in bread and you can't remove one without also removing the other.
      Like me, you are obviously a fan of Caruso and I recent uploaded a video to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his death on 2nd August. The video has one song/aria from each year from 1902 to 1920 and almost 300 photos. It's a bit long but if you wanted to watch it the link is

    The sound quality seems a good compromise.
    But the canned applause detracts. If you want to fade to an applause, first get it to be the same colour / character as the rest of the track. Or just fade to black.
    For me, modern countertenor performances reveal more beauty within the music. But it's cool that these recordings exist to show us how it used to be done.

    • @michaelmcgrailengland
      @michaelmcgrailengland  3 года назад +2

      Thanks for listening Rich.
      The added applause does not detract from the music it does what it is intended to do which is to give a "live" effect with more presence and to fade in and out of the noise on the recording.. It's actually from a 1950s Jussi Bjorling Carnegie Hall concert and I have added noise to it to but less than the noise on the recorded aria.
      If you don't appreciate all the work that I put in to try to preserve the memory of the great singers of the past like Caruso, I can only suggest that you avoid my channel in future as I will not be following any of your advice..
      By the way I also completely disagree with you about the countertenor voice, I find it an unnatural sound and it surprises me that you could think that such a sound could excel that produced by the great Enrico Caruso, even with the poor audio quality of his recording.

    • @Rich-on6fe
      @Rich-on6fe 3 года назад +1

      @@michaelmcgrailengland it detracts in that it sticks out as something that has been messed about with. Less is more!
      I enjoyed the recording: a good job was done in engineering the noise situation. If you are offended though: that's really your problem.

    • @michaelmcgrailengland
      @michaelmcgrailengland  3 года назад +3

      @@Rich-on6fe I don't really want to prolong this any further but I feel that I must make my position clear as other listeners will no doubt read this discussion.
      I value constructive, friendly criticism intended to be helpful but I do not like criticism simply intended to find fault and degrade my work.
      That is your problem rather than mine as you need to learn to have a little more humility and not be so dogmatic when you are simply expressing your own opinion which some would agree with and others disagree with.
      You mention noise but, in fact, my system tends to increase noise as my main objective is to give the music a more true to life to life sound not simply to reduce noise..
      But hey, I'm 79 and haven't enough time left to argue over minor issues so I'll say thanks again for listening and send you best wishes from Yorkshire, England.
