I posted a video of an empty wave on Instagram, with no intentions but to stoke people out cause it was a cool looking shorebreak barrel. Little did i Know, that with no perspective for size, it would send a bunch of people into a frenzy, thinking I discovered something new, or scored somewhere special and they missed out. Kelly Slater was one of those people, so I had a short back and forth with him, before revealing the actual size of the wave, which he then thought was hilarious.
But... It got me thinking (as i often do, but don't post about) about how toxic Social Media can be in our own lives. How it can make us think things of people that aren't true, or think things of situations that aren't true, or just dwell on what others have that we don't, causing us to think less of ourselves when we really really shouldn't.
So while filming this bit with Slater... I then went on a rant about my feelings towards social media perspective, and the struggles i've had personally with comparing myself to others, and why we should always work to not do that to ourselves. Don't get me wrong... Social Media is an awesome tool, but when used the wrong way, it can really take your mind and heart to places they shouldn't go. So always keep yourself in check when scrolling through whatever feed, and know that you yourself are destined for greatness... It just may not look anything like it does for others around you. Always strive for more, but be content with where you are today also.

Sorry if this rant is kind of all over the place... but that's exactly what it was, a rant. I let the camera keep rolling, and let my thoughts hit the mic. I hope this can speak to anyone who deals, or has dealt, with social media anxiety comparing themselves to others, or thinking they are missing out on something.

Great message man! I got rid of my instagram a couple years ago for this exact reason and I can honestly say my life has improved 10-fold.
Social media has so many negative aspects to it that I simply keep it old school these days. But it's part of your job, and it's nice to see someone keeping it real in what they're putting out there. Your content is amazing and doesn't do anything but make me stoked
You hit the nail on the head brotha. Most people that post on Instagram facebook or whatever else are seeking validation or likes and it takes away the purity of that moment. In the past I would almost get resentful or upset about people’s post or people asking to be friends but won’t say hi in public. Or being out and seeing everyone on and missing out on moments and it’s almost like they are addicted to it thAt they might miss something in a fantasy world
Hey Brett - this is so timely!! I teach HS and coach our fledgling surf team and had a HEAVY conversation with a kiddo today who was feeling crushed due to not measuring up to others. I'm posting this video for the team and also making efforts to be more transparent with my failures and my own negative thoughts to help them work through theirs. Please keep doing what you're doing.
Thats so sad to hear. I can only imagine how difficult it is to be a teenager nowadays. It was hard enough comparing yourself to others growing up without social media, but i can only imagine how hard it is now. That's awesome you're reaching out to those kids, and trying to make them aware that everyone has their own struggles, and no matter what you see, it's not always perfect. Keep doing what your doing as well!
Wave scale can be so deceiving. One time SF was super glassy and the crew paddled out thinking 2-3' .. turned out to be well overhead !

Great perspective Brett! As a music teacher with a YT channel and tv show in the works, it's easy to fall down the hole and compare. In the end, we are only competing against ourselves. Good message I catch myself sometimes wishing I was somewhere else doing something different, mostly scoring waves. But in reality I’m super happy living and surfing waves in the northeast with my lifelong friends and spending time with my family. Perspective

I have struggled with fomo even without social media so i think everyone can identify.. your videos have been a huge inspiration for me.. The wife even called it a bromance lol! I appreciate that. It’s definitely just human nature to think the grass is greener somewhere else... social media can just enhance that feeling unfortunately. It’s up to us to push back those feelings and look at where we’re at with optimism. 👍🏼

I saw Kelly Slater surfing at Rincon a few times. The local surfers at Rincon are really good but Kelly Slater was at a level that made me realize why he is so highly regarded. Before I was informed of who he was, I thought he was some kind of ninja.
Did you happen to read 'the sublte art of not giving a fuck' by Mark Manson? He also had an entire chapter about how everyone on social media sees all these highs, and therefore feel disappointed about their own mediocrity. More people should know this. Thanks for sharing!
Also, many people see only the results and are like 'oh I wish I had this' or 'I wish I was there', but they only see the results and not the hard work that is often necessary to get there.

Bro I beat myself up everytime I'm in the office and see you and the boys on the hunt up and down hwy 12. I used to not miss a swell then life hit about age 30, although I'm 35 now and very rarely miss a swell.🤣 Or at least try not to.

Sick wave nonetheless, do you think it could be breaking like this on a bigger swell? More like a mini point break than a shorebreak, imo.
It actually broke yesterday at waist high, but half the sand has washed out so the shape was weird. The sand changes out there week to week, so you never know what you’ll get. It only sets up as a point once ever 2yrs or more and is blocked by the shoals out the back, so it never gets very big. It’s Very rare, maybe once every 6yrs or so it’ll be chest-shoulder+, but on the opposite side, as a left handed.
Brett I know this is off topic from your video post. But can you recommend a good waterproof sunblock. I surf and am in the water for hours need something that will hold up.

What happened though cause I was thinking when that swell hit over the next couple days after the knee high sess there was going to be some legit waves there…
it was too big for it... that wave is very sheltered from swell as odd as it is. everything outside of it is super shallow shoals.
