Liscard was thriving 50 years ago - Woolworths, John Menzies, M&S. I had a Saturday job at Safeways when I was 16! I used to drink at the boot- girlfriend lived around the corner. Landlord at Royal Oak was Steve Moss? Used to be fire station over the road. I left Wallasey in early 80s and rarely go back, so nice to see how it is nowadays. Fond memories but glad to be elsewhere now.
Grew up here , live in OZ now. Love going back as often as possible but it is not like it was. I walked these roads everyday , not one shop is the same. Its a real shame
thank you for posting this, born in Liscard 1952, grew up there and stayed there till I was 27, left for New Zealand 1978 , some things not changed there, but it looks cold and strange now, but loved growing up there, had my reasons for leaving and they all seemed good at the time, had my wedding reception in the Boot and loved Safe ways and all the vibrant shops and pubs and New Brighton with all its attractions....life is strange.
my hometown, liscard has dwindled massively over the years due to high st shop decline, i live about a quarter of a mile away from liscard and havnt shopped there for over 4 years lol.
That was my beat area in the early 80s. Now it just seems to be estate agents and cafe/restarants. What happened to Safeways, Littlewoods, John Menzies the army and navy store, etc?
I used to work in the Co op department store...yep, a multi level department store on five floors! If people could see what Liscard was like in the 1960s they would weep.
@@liamkatt6434 - I think I remember an escalator as you went through the front door? And maybe a lift? And do you remember Millers in King Street? I think it was sort of on the corner of Rice Lane. Very much like the set of, "Are You Being Served". Over the road (King St) was a joke shop. A joke shop!!! Then down the road on that side was a butchers, with complete animal carcasses dangling outside over the pavement, and a bit further down was a small supermarket. I'm not sure if it was the Co-op. And who remembers Gresford Place? That was about 75 metres up Union Street, on the right, and cut through to Rice Lane. If you know what to look for, you can still 'see' it. And it holds a terrible secret from the 1960's!
That petshop used to have a jackdaw that told you to eff off back in the seventies, good that its still there. Just over from the royal oak was a cafe in the seventies and i used to feel well ard drinking a pigpot (big mug)of tea. Memories
4:20 Three story white building. Top left hand window was my office window when I worked in Liscard early 90’s. The building to the right was Midland bank. The pub opposite these buildings, I’m glad to see is still there. Had many a drink on a Friday evening after work there. The Tower pub. 🗼🍻
I was born in victoria central grew up in seacombe lived in wallasey and left 38 years ago.it has changed. Still incredibly proud of my wirral upbringing, the accent may have loosened a little but im still greeting people with aright lad. Born in wallasey in 68.....now live in kent, still go up to wirral a few times a year.....so much has changed, mum used to work in littewoods, then at supasnaps.....one of my highlights, when I was a kid was seeing john conteh(liverpool boxer) in littewoods.....then there was a big buzz, because louis collins from the professionals...had stoped in ther, for a packet of crisps lol....its amazing to think how many celebrities come from wirral,Dominic pursel...born in wallasey, dick davis, pat rutlidge, daniel craig, pauline collins....a mine of useless information lol
If you are looking for a take away, turkish barber, sunbed shop, tattoo parlour, discount store, charity shop, bookies or vape shop then Liscard is THE place to go! 😂😂
That was interesting. But I didn't have a clue where I was. A street name might have helped but perhaps you don't like doing that. I lived there as a small child. I like seeinng the red bricks again. Thank you.
