    I commented this on his 1000 volleys a day video: "Your volleys are so much better, your self one is still being negative. Your approach shot selection is not good. You want to mostly approach in front of you not cross-court. Watch some videos on the geometry of the court at the net vs baseline to see why." Glad you made this for him!

  • @DrPravZ
    @DrPravZ 2 месяца назад +12

    Going cross court is a good shot only when executed perfectly and the ball goes close to the net, otherwise easy pickings for the opponent. At recreation and club level, it's prone for error too.
    Do this instead-
    If the opponent is inside the court and the ball is on the left or right side, push deep down the line. If the opponent is behind the baseline, drop the ball close to the net in front of you
    If the ball is dropped at the centre, push deep to the backhand of your opponent.
    This will work like a charm.

  • @gareth2736
    @gareth2736 2 месяца назад +1

    Helpful. A lot of us learn that cross court is always the safer shot but this only really applies from near the back of the court. I wonder if the thinking behind hitting cross court is partially due to this guidance being misapplied (or lots of doubles play making the cross court shot more instinctive).

  • @SquatLife
    @SquatLife 2 месяца назад +2

    From court positioning this makes total sense. But if you are on the run and really have to get there, you might argue CC allows one to lift over the lower part of the net and at least force your opponent to hit the next ball. If rushed and try to go Down the line you might hit the net or spray wide and if you aim too much to the middle, you are almost in a similar situation as to hitting it CC. As always great content.

    I learned this hard way. God knows how many points I lost because of playing cross court when near the net. Playing it down the line is much safer, increases the chance of another point by a large extent. But when you are rushing for the ball near the net, cross court comes naturally. So yeah, this needs practice and is not really easy !!

    First shot agree
    Second shot on backhand cross court deep. forces your opponent to hit his backhand and unless his initials are RN then the down the line bh running is very hard. Not my idea, I saw this on a YT video about Joker tactics.

  • @mauricioventanas
    @mauricioventanas 2 месяца назад +1

    Down the line is my default shot with short balls, whether they're easy to put away, or an opportunity to approach the net, or difficult dropshots. But you never want to make this tactic too predictable. So, every now and then I try to keep my opponent guessing by hitting cross court. And sometimes, or maybe rather often, the situation is so desperate you just want to hit the ball any way you can, just put it on the other side of the net and hope the other guy misses!

And he was saying that yound players were hitting hard, targetting lines and complex stuffs. Lendl said "just play long". I thought about it a lot and indeed, playing long doesn't allow many angles.

    I try not to talk in absolutes. Yes going down the line keeps the ball in front of you however just as you said he would need to hit a sharp cross court shot in order to not get beat or at least have a better chance of winning his down the line shot also needs to be of a certain quality and placement especially in these two situations in order to have a good chance of winning the point. So either sharp cross court or within 3ft or so of the singles sideline when going down the line. There are pros and cons either way.

  • @saYanoo
    @saYanoo 2 месяца назад +3

    1st shot, I agree. There was an opportunity to go longline even though there is higher risk to hit the net.
    2nd shot, I disagree. Why?
    He just barely gets the ball and it's backhand. How would he be able to play this longline at all?!
    He is just playing it way too high right to his opponent. Play with more angle and/or to his feet.
    But what REALLY would have helped to win these points is to not get into this situation from the beginning and especially respecting the rules of proper positioning on the court. 1st shot you are left outside the camera angle but should be more in the middle.

    Generally good advice but depends on several factors. Of course in this clip he leaves half the court open and hits a nothing shot. Obviously if you make your opponent run it will be harder for them. Also, here it's too the forehand, which is easier for most players, but if you were on the other side hitting cross court to the backhand, that might be a better strategy than down the line to the forehand, so it really depends. Really do anything other than hit it right to them while leaving most of the court open.

      He wasn’t forced to hit cross court. And when you’re late, cross court isn’t the natural direction you’ll hit anyway. This is a really easy situation to understand… when you’re close to and hit sharp cross court, you better end the point our you’ll lose easily. With that said, hitting a winner cross court in this situation is incredibly difficult, so Trey needs to just hit this down the line and he’ll have a much better chance of winning the point.
